Video Transcript for Tow Ready Tail Light Isolating Diode System Installation - 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Speaker 1: Today on our 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Tow Ready Taillight Isolating Diode System with Four Pole Connector, part number TR118821. This diode system is going to provide a proper lighting function for your towed vehicle. The diodes protect your RV from any back feed if there is a problem in the wiring from your vehicle, and vice versa. It's going to protect your vehicle from any back feed from the RV. Now let's show you how to get this installed.First thing we're going to do is we're going to start by removing our taillight. You take a trim panel tool, and you're just going to gently pull out on these pins until they come all the way out.

Once you get those out, you're just going to pull straight back on your taillight until it pops loose. We'll start with the big one. You're going to pull up on the red tab, push down here in the center, pull out. Same thing with this one. Pull up on the red tab, push down in the center, remove the light.

Same thing on this third one. Pull up on the red tab, push down on the center, and remove it. We'll just set our taillight aside. Now we're going to test to locate which one of these wires is going to be our stop and our turn signal. With a test light and an extra set of hands we'll do a left turn. Now we know our white wire with our brown stripe is going to be our left turn signal.

Now let's try brake lights. Now we know our white wire with the brown stripe is going to be our stop and turn signal. Now we'll check for our running lights. Go ahead and turn them on. Now the smaller plug, which was the second plug down here in the center of the taillight housing, you can see that our running lights are going to be this white wire with the gray stripe. This box, these two wires are going to connect to our wires that we located for our taillights.

Our taillight housing is so tight in here that I don't think this is going to fit in here without putting a lot of pressure on the taillight itself. What I'm going to do is I just took a bolt . Sorry, a nut that I found laying around the shop and a string and made a plumb-bob. What I'm going to do is I'm going to drop that down through the hole here to come out the bottom, and I'm going to pull my wires back up. I'm going to take my brown and yellow wire, just make a little loop so it holds, and pull it back up through the hole like that.Next thing we need to do is we need to take our white wire with our brown stripe which goes to our stop and turn signal, and we're going to cut it in half. Go ahead and splice the ends on both sides. Then we're going to take our yellow wire which goes to our stop and turn signal, and we're going to twist these together, put a butt connector on. Now, I'm using a heat shrink butt connector. These are not going to be provided in your kit. Make sure it's got a good hold. Then we're going to take the other end end, go in other side of the butt connector. Crimp it down, make sure it's got a good hold. Going to take the heat gun and I'm just going to heat up the ends. If you're watching, it shrinks it up around the wires. White wire with a gray stripe for our running lights, we're going to do the same connection with the brown wire.Next I'm going to go ahead and wrap everything back up with some electrical tape. See this is marked driver side. You're going to have an input and an output. You're going to have four wires, it's going to be yellow and brown. This is going to be coming from inside your vehicle. Out is going to be going to your taillight. What I'm going to do, and you can do this with fingernail polish, I just happen to have a paint marker. I'm going to take a paint marker and I'm going to mark my input so I know which wire to hook it up to. I'm just going to put a white mark on it for my yellow and brown so I know which ones I need to hook up to my input coming from the vehicle. Now what we're going to, we're going to take our yellow wire with our white, we marked it for input. This is going to be coming from the existing wiring from the vehicle and we're just going twist those two wires together. We'll take our heat shrink butt connector, crimp it down, and we're going to take our other yellow wire and the other end of our taillight wire and run those together, and we're going to put them in the other end of the butt connector. We're going to do this same process with our running lights and the brown wire.Next I'm going to take some electrical tape, I'm going to go ahead and tape up around this area here, kind of keep these wires together. Then we can put our light assembly back together. Now, you want to make sure when you reconnect your plugs you push the red tabs back into place. Now we can put our fasteners back into place. Now we're going to take all of our extra wiring and we're going to route it over our passenger side. I'm going up overtop the hitch here, and then what I can do is just zip tie along the way.inaudible 00:06:36 I'm taking my diode box and I took the paper off the double sided tape they got on the back, and I found a spot right up in this area on the inside of the bumper that I stuck it to. We're going to go ahead and mark our input, just like we did on the driver side. We're going to take our plumb-bob just like we did on the driver's side and we're going to drop it down behind the bumper, to the top. Now here on the passenger side, your wires are going to be green and brown. Green is going to go to your stop and turn and your brown is going to go to your running light signal.I found some wire loom, which we have available on our website. I'm going to take it and I'm going to cut it in half. I probably have . Probably eight foot of it, seven or eight foot. I'm just going to fold it in half and cut it. Put this around my wires that are running up along the back of my bumper, just going to make a little easier to zip tie everything together. Once I have my wire loom on I'm just going to take some electrical tape, I'm going to tape around the wire loom to make sure my wire stays inside. Here on our passenger side I'm just going to bundle up this extra that I got. We're going to take our ground wire and our provided butt connector and our provided ring terminal, crimp that down. I'm going to go ahead and wrap some electrical tape around the connection also. I want to find a good ground. Looks like this metal here is doubled up. I think that would be a perfect place to put my ground wire. I'm going to take a 1/4 inch socket and with my provided self tapping screw. Now, you just want to snug this up. You don't need it so tight, you just want it tight enough that it's not going to move.I'm going to take my four pole that I'm going to connect into here, run it up to the front of the vehicle, it's going to hook into my RV, and route it through the underneath of my vehicle up to the engine bay 00:09:04 compartment. Let me do that real quick, and I'll show you how I did it. As you can see, I just ran along this existing wiring, crossed the vehicle here, found some existing wiring on the driver side, went overtop of the frame. I want to stay away from any moving parts. Zip tie here, staying on top of the frame, came down right here, went behind this bracket, came on the back side of the tank, crossed over right here into the body, just ran it right along the body, up over top this frame bracket. I routed this up to the top of the vehicle, staying away from any heat, moving parts, or anything else that may damage the wiring. Now that we have got our wire up to the front, we've already cut the hole in the grill. What I'm going to do, is because you can see the colored wire in the grill, I'm just taking some wire loom, and this is just personal preference, and I'm going to push it up to cover that so you can't see the color as well. We'll test out everything using an alternative power source. Right turn, brakes, left turn, and our taillights. That'll do it for the Tow Ready Taillight Isolating Diode System with Four Pole Connector, part number TR118821 on our 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Would have went much quicker and been more convenient if the kit would have supplied male and female ends to mate to the ones that come on the wiring. If you dont have them you will need them or cut the ones off the kit a use a splice. Pretty straightforward installation on 03 suburban. 49803

Ask the Experts about this Tow Ready Tow Bar Wiring

Do you have a question about this Tow Bar Wiring?

  • Wiring to Flat Tow a 2019 Jeep Wrangler Behind a Motorhome
  • Magnetic tow lights, like part # TL21RK, do their job just fine, are less expensive, and don't require much to setup so they're not a bad option by any means. The only real drawbacks to them is that you need to set them up or take them off each time you change from towing to driving the Jeep. They also have a chance of scratching the Jeep's paint since they're being attached to its surface each time. We often recommend them if you're not going to be towing the vehicle very often or if...

  • How To Install a Flat-Tow Wiring Harness on a 2005 Jeep Wrangler with Trailer Wiring Harness
  • I do have options for you but it's largely going to depend on what trailer wiring harness you have installed on your 2005 Jeep Wrangler. The best and most simple solution for you would be to just use a set of magnetic tow lights, the MaxxTow Magnetic Tow Lights part # MT70097. However, we do have hardwire options for you as well. If you have a factory trailer wiring harness then you can use the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles part # HM56202 which is a plug and...

  • Recommended Components To Flat Tow 2014 Toyota Corolla Behind A Motorhome.
  • I can certainly make some recommendations that will work for you. When flat towing you need base plates on the towed vehicle, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting for the towed vehicle and most states now require a supplemental brake system. If you have a manual transmission in your Corolla I recommend the RoadMaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit, part # RM-521194-5. This has removable arms that make the brackets almost invisible when the arms are removed. The tow bar you referenced, the Falcon,...

  • Willd Tow Ready Tail Light Isolating Diode System Protect Both Motorhome and Towed Vehicle Wiring
  • Yes, the Tow Ready Tail Light Isolating Diode System # TR118821 does work to protect both the electrical on your motorhome and your 2013 Nissan 370z (that you input for your vehicle info). Since your motorhome has combined wiring and your 370z has separate (3-wire system) wiring this means that the brake lights on your 370z will function both as the brake and turn lights (when flat towing). If you would like to retain the separate wiring for when you are flat towing then you would also...

  • Parts Needed To Flat Tow 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid Behind A Motor Home
  • When you plan on flat-towing your 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid, there are 5 things that are needed. You will need base plates, a tow bar, safety chains, wiring for the lights on your towed vehicle, and a supplemental brake system. I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit, part # BX2639. This is a custom fit system that provides attach points for your tow bar. The tow bar I recommend is the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar, part # BX7365. This tow bar system comes with the motor home mount so no ball...

  • Recommended Components For Flat-Towing 2005 Honda CR-V Behind Motorhome
  • there are 5 thing needed when you are flat-towing a vehicle. You will need base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting for the towed vehicle, and most states now require a supplemental brake system. If you like the Blue Ox Adventurer Tow Bar, part # BX7322, I recommend using Blue Ox base plates as well, like part # BX2238. This eliminates the hassle of using an adapter that allows you to be able to use different manufacturers for base plates and tow bars. You mentioned the RoadMaster...

  • Will Tow Ready Diode System # TR118821 Work On 1998 Geo Tracker
  • Yes, the Tow Ready Tail Light Diode System # TR118821 referenced in your question will work great on your 1998 Chevy Geo Tracker. This is a combined diode system that will let you tap into the signal light circuits on your Tracker so they will accept those from the RV while being towed. It includes a 4-Way connector and extender loop to connect with a 4-Way on the RV. I have attached a short video review along with the written installation manual that you can check out as well. • Solution for Getting Signal Lights for Flat Towing Ford Explorer without Splicing into Wiring
  • I may have a solution for you, however there isn't a custom plug-and-play tow bar wiring option available for your 2013 Ford Explorer like the harness you installed on your friend's Focus. If you don't want to mess with the factory wiring at all on your Explorer another option is a removable tail light kit like the Optronics Heavy Duty Magnetic Tow Lights # TL21RK. This will provide you with the needed tail lights for towing your Explorer without having to splice into its wiring. The...

  • What Will I Need To Flat Tow a Toyota RAV4 Behind a 2008 Volvo Semi Truck
  • Assuming that your 2008 Volvo semi truck has a reinforced utility bumper, I recommend installing the Bolt-On Pintle Hook, # 63014. This hook has a gross tow rating of 20,000 pounds and can be directly bolted to the bumper. In order to tow your 2008 Toyota RAV4 you will need a few different items starting with the Blue Ox Allure Pintle Style Tow Bar, # BX7460P. This heavy-duty tow bar allows you to safely and securely tow a vehicle up to 10,000 pounds. The Blue Ox Base Plate Kit, #...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser Behind an RV Using Roadmaster Sterling Tow Bar
  • The Roadmaster Sterling tow bar # RM-576 is compatible with all Roadmaster base plates including XL base plates # 1183-1 for the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. The XL base plates will use the quick disconnects that came with the tow bar. It sounds like your Jeep has the EZ5 base plates but that type of set up is not available for the FJ Cruiser. The tow bar already has safety cables and a 7- to 6-Way so what I recommend for wiring on the FJ is # TR118821. You would have to cut off the 4-Way...
