Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring Kit Installation - 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Today on our 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee we're going to review and install the Roadmaster universal diode wiring kit for towed vehicles, part number RM-154. Now right out of the package we're going to have some zip ties and a ring terminal, a lead to connect the tow to the towed vehicle, our four diodes and necessary connectors, and then the wiring harness that will connect the towed vehicle wiring ultimately to the our tow vehicle. Now to begin our install we need to remove the rear taillight assemblies. To remove the rear taillight assembly we'll need to start by removing the two push pin fasteners. We'll pry out on the center of the fastener first, releasing it, and then removing it completely. Next we'll pull the taillight assembly towards the rear of the vehicle, releasing the fasteners underneath. Now to assist, you can also use a little pry tool and get between the taillight and the body of the vehicle.

We're going to use a little plastic pry bar. Just helps to release those fasteners underneath. If we turn it over we can see the two fasteners or alignment pins here. Now that we've got access to the manufacturer's wiring here that runs to the back of the taillight assembly, we're going to go ahead and remove some of the tape covering up the wires as we'll need to access the wiring to connect our diodes. Here's a little tech tip. If you take a soft cloth and put it between the taillight and the body, you can help prevent scratching the body or paint.

As you cut away the tape, just be careful not to cut through the wires or sheathing underneath. That should give us plenty of room to work with. Repeat for the turn signal circuit. Now with the driver side done, we can go ahead and repeat the same process on the passenger side. Now with the wiring exposed here on both sides, we're going to go ahead and test for the running, turn, and brake signal circuit. Now with the running light on, you can see we have power.

That's the white wire with an orange stripe. Next we'll go ahead and check for the brake and turn signal circuit, which is likely to be combined on one wire. Now that we've verified that it's the turn signal circuit, let's check the brake. Now that we know the white wire with a brown stripe is our turn and brake signal circuit, let's go ahead and start connecting our diodes. Each one of our diodes will have two pins on the inside and one for the out. The out will face the taillight itself.

The in will be the power from the vehicle and from the tow vehicle. It will sit inline with the manufacturer's wiring similar to this. We're going to take our turn and brake signal circuit, strip the wires back and add the spade terminal to each end. Now once we have the two spade terminals on, we can reconnect the manufacturer's wiring to the spade terminals, leaving one terminal left to connect the towed vehicle wiring. We'll go ahead and repeat the same process with our running light circuit. Now we'll move over to the driver side and repeat the same process. Our running light circuit is going to be the white wire with a gray strap, and our turn and brake signal circuit will be the white wire with a brown stripe. Now with all the manufacturer's wires hooked to the diodes, we're going to go ahead and bring in our new wiring harness for towed vehicles. Now we need to get our wire routed up behind the rear fascia and behind the passenger side taillight. To help get the wiring in place we're going to use a pull wire. That can be a stiff piece of wire. In this case we're using a piece of air tubing. We're going to run it down between the rear bumper or fascia and the body of the vehicle. Now this particular harness has two 4-pole ends, and we only need one, so we're going to take the other end and cut it off. Just get it out of the way and then take our wiring harness and tape it to the pull wire. We'll just use some black electrical tape. Now once we have access to it, we can go ahead and remove the pull wire. Hang on to that pull wire because we can reuse it over on the driver side. Now that we have access to the towed wiring, we're going to start with the white wire. The white wire is going to be the ground for our new 4-pole connector. We'll go ahead and strip it back, take the ring terminal from our install kit, slide it onto the wire, and crimp it down. Then we're going to take the white wire and attach it to the body or sheet metal of the vehicle. Keep in mind when attaching it, you use a area where the sheet metal doubles up for a good secured ground. We're going to add a self-tapping screw to make this connection. Just like that, we've got a nice ground and we can move to our other connection points here. Now we got two more connections to make. We've got our turn and brake signal circuit and our running light circuit. The yellow wire is used for the turn and brake signal circuit on the driver side. I'm just going to go ahead and cut that off as it will not be used on the passenger side. Take our brown wire, strip it back, and add our spade connector in. Then we'll bring in the running light circuit diode and plug into the towed vehicle wiring terminal. Make sure we got a good connection and repeat the same process for the turn and brake signal circuit. Now with all our connections made here on the driver side, we're going to go ahead and wrap up our diodes and wiring with some black electrical tape. This will help to bundle our wires back up and keep our connection points clean from dirt, dust, debris, and moisture. A little additional security, I can add a zip tie to help hold the wiring in place. To clean up my install look I'll cut off the excess from the zip tie and we're ready to reinstall the passenger side taillight assembly. Next I'm going to take my pull wire and route it down below the driver side so that we can route our wire to it and pull it up into place. Now keep in mind when routing any of your wiring, to stay away from the moving components such as steering or suspension, or excessive heat such as exhaust. Now as we route the wiring up behind the driver side taillight assembly we'll keep in mind that our 4-pole trailer connector is going to end up at the front of the vehicle. We'll take enough wiring that we can actually double it up as we pull it up behind the driver side taillight assembly. Now once we have access to the wiring, we'll go ahead and remove the pull wire. We'll take the side that comes from the passenger side, figure out how much wire is needed to make our connections, and then start making our necessary connections. To help make our connections, I'm going to go ahead and split the wires. There's a clear sheathing that goes around it so I'm going to use my utility knife to cut through the sheathing, being careful not to cut through the insulation of the wire. Now once we cut through the sheathing, you can see we've split the wires. We can pull the white and green wire aside because they will not be used here on the driver side, just our yellow and brown wire. We can go ahead and cut in half. The yellow wire that comes from the passenger side does not get used. We'll just cut it off short. The brown wire will actually get doubled up, going to our diode. Let's go ahead and connect the running light circuit first. Supplied with our install kit is a yellow spade terminal large enough to fit over the doubled up wire. Then take it, plug it into our diode, and our running light circuit is completed here on the driver side. We'll take our yellow wire for the turn signal and brake circuit and go into our other diode. Now once all our connections are made, we can wrap it up just like we did on the passenger side. Now once we have it taped up, we'll go ahead and reinstall the driver side taillight assembly. Now here as we route from the back forward, we're going to follow the manufacturer's wiring and use the zip tie provided to secure our harness. As we route up and over the axle, we'll have to be really careful to stay away from the moving suspension parts. Now as we move forward up the body of the vehicle, we're going to go ahead and remove the lower panel or guard so we can route the wiring underneath it following the manufacturer's brake line. Now as we get up here closer to the engine compartment, I'm going to go ahead and remove one of the heat shield fasteners so that I can route the wiring underneath the heat shield. Now in areas where you don't have a safe place to secure your wiring to, we can add the Red Line metal loom clamp, part number A0500. Along with a self-tapping screw, we can put the clamp around our wiring harness and then secure it to the frame with our self-tapper. Now to get our wiring in place we're also going to go ahead and remove the front rock guards. There are multiple fasteners that will need to be removed. Once we have the fasteners removed, we'll go ahead and pull the guard down and set it aside. We're also going to go ahead and remove a piece of the air deflector. There are multiple fasteners that will need to be removed, four push pins specifically here across the lower portion of the fascia. Pry the center of the push pin out and then remove it completely. We have three more fasteners here that attach it to the lower core support. Twist and snap out of place, giving us just enough room to get it out and route our wiring in. Now we want our plug to come out through the front fascia. We're going to trim a small portion of it using a rotary tool so that we can get the plug through. Now once I have it pulled through, I'm going to use a zip tie to secure it to the front fascia, then install the 4-pole cap. The cap will just simply slide on over the end and help protect it when it's not in use. Now we can go ahead and cut off the excess from the zip ties and reinstall any of the paneling that we removed. Now with everything installed, we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the review and install of our Roadmaster diode wiring kit for towed vehicles, part number RM-154, on our 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. .

Although I am commenting on this product, I actually would like to comment on the following products. I purchased a brake system, tow bar, base plates and wire harness from etrailer. All of my orders were filled in a timely manner. When I reached out for technical assistance, the advisors were readily accessible. All of the products were installed by me. All of the products were very easy to install by using the video and instructions. 337853

I installed the wiring harness yesterday and it took about 4 hours. Thats actually 4 hours of work, in reality it was more like 6 hours but most of the time was trying to figure out how to route the wiring which is not the fault of the harness. Everything worked as advertised with no gotchya's or any issues which was really surprising. I installed it on a 2009 Smart fortwo Passion which I am towing behind my motorhome. My advice for anyone using this is take your time, read the directions carefully before you start and follow them step by step and you should have no issues. 281855

Weve put about 15,000 miles on the MHcar since installing the wiring harness and have no issues what so ever which when towing is a very welcome relief. I am very happy with your product and would highly recommend it.

I used this for a Jeep Wrangler, probably one of the easier applications. etrailer cautions us to ensure the ground is proper, and I can confirm this. While I found the proper wires using voltage, the gound I used had too much resistance to allow for proper functioning. It took several hours to track it down. But no doubt, when the electical system gives what appears to be impossible data, it is always the ground. I hooked to the proper ground and it works like a charm. I do recommend using heat shrink tubing on the spade connectors. Also I mounted the four flat connector to the bumper. Curt brackets do not fit the connectors in this package without serious modifications. 192669

Work as discribed. The first time for me to use the universal kit and was a little worried about the outcome but I followed the instructions and it works great. The hardest part was routing the wire around the front end area. Wire was just enough, I recommend starting at the front end and route the wire on the passenger side. This is the side of the motorhomes 7 pin plug. Remember to stay away from the exhaust (on most trucks as mine is a Chevy 1500). Product was received within 3 days of purchase which works for me. I give Etrailer 2 thumps up for great service once again. 511182

A bit disappointed to be truthful. This is a generic wiring kit with diodes and wire, not Jeep specific. I am totally qualified to install and did without any problems, pretty much had to figure out the color codes myself for the JEEP lights. The real issue is the lack of any wiring for the license plate lights, required in California and pretty sure nationwide. This is a challenge that is not addressed in the kit. I had to pull access panels off, find and trace the wires, install my own diodes and wire as none are provided for this light in the kit. The basic kit is nice but the lack of provisions for the license plate light are a real drawback and not easily solved. 584025

everything went well except i was told that i did not need the brake relay kit and i do. We got it wired ready to leave to go back home and found out we did need the brake relay and when i called to order it they were out of stock so delayed our trip. 540131

Installation was relatively straightforward, and the necessary parts were included in the kit. The installation is not technically difficult, but gaining access to some the wiring was somewhat irritating because of the assembly techniques used in modern vehicles. Be prepared for somewhat tedious digging around to get to the wires, and pull enough slack to work with them. Once again, a few extra plastic automotive fasteners and automotive cable fasteners came in handy. They're available at a decent hardware store or Home Depot-like store. 63823

Great experience, quick shipping, excellent video and instructional references to go along with the products. I did the installation of the product myself and without the text and instructional video's there is no way I would have been 100% successful. These are the extra value add things that make the difference when shopping with etrailer, I will be a return customer. I am using this product with my 2016 Jeep Wrangler towed by a 2014 Fleetwood Bounder motorhome. 339287

This wiring kit worked marvelously. I'm pretty handy but electrical things can still be a bit scary for me. I got a little help from the good etrailer people, watched a bunch of videos and finally looked at the wiring diagram sent with the kit. Wiring diagrams are not always as straight forward as I would like but this kit has a very good one. I have bought a handful of products from etrailer and consider them to be a cut above. The vehicle that I installed the wiring kit in met a tragic death last summer. The new tow vehicle also needed the same wiring kit. The kit is very complete and the instructions are great. Now, think about this........etrailer contacts customers a year later to follow up on their products. Makes you think they actually care about their customers and the products they buy. Almost unheard of in our times.

This isn't the first time I've installed a wiring harness and this one was a nice one (I thought). But I am having problems with the right light (both brake and running light). I've tried calling and talking to your customer support with no answer! I've found if I turn on my lights, at least the running lights all work (but not the brake light or turn signal). I'm thinking it's a grounding problem, but haven't been able to fix it so may have to try someone else's wiring harness. 608773

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2016 Ford Fiesta SE Behind an RV
  • I will be happy to recommend the parts you will need to flat tow your 2016 Ford Fiesta behind your RV. The first item needed will be base plates. The base plates are what will mount to the Fiesta. They provide a safe attachment point for the tow bar. For these I recommend # RM-524438-4. The tow bar is what connects the RV to the Fiesta. There are a lot of options but not to worry because I will recommend one that will work best with your Fiesta. Non-binding tow bars are the way to go...

If you look on page 331 of the manual it will go over the detailed process on the ncessary steps to flat tow. As you mentioned, you'll need base plates, and the Roadmaster EZ5 # RM-521440-5 is a confirmed fit for your Jeep so long as it is not an SRT-8 model, which since you listed this part I assume it is not. For a tow bar I recommend the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520 which is out most popular option due to how easy it is...

  • Flat Towing Lighting Harness Recommendation for 2015 Ford F-150
  • The wiring is different on vehicles that have trailer wiring and ones that do not come with it at all. We see this on other vehicles that will have connections made under the hood and pre-wiring ran to back of some vehicles and on others all of that isn't there at all. In your situation there is a different style of connector than what the part # HM56009 is compatible with. Your truck has a standard round connector since you have the tow package with a factory 7-way. For lighting you...

  • Yes, you can flat tow your 2017 Chevy Colorado so long as it has a Four-Wheel Drive Low setting. There are a number of things you will need to flat tow, starting with base plates. If your Colorado does not have Adaptive Cruise Control, I recommend going with the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit # RM-523182-5. • The Roadmaster Nighthawk # RM-676 is an excellent tow bar choice. It is indeed compatible with the EZ5 base plates, # RM-524431-5, for your 2017 Ford F-150. Since the tow bar comes with safety cables you will not need to add any of those to your order. Lighting kit # RM-154 will also work with the truck. However, there are some significant differences that are important to take note of. The EZ5 kit is easier to connect your Falcon tow bar to but does not allow the use of the anchor brackets for sterling cables. Sterling cable anchors will have to be attached to the frame or welded...

  • Can 2016 Ram 1500 Automatic be Flat Towed Behind an RV and What Parts are Needed to Do So

If you have a 2-wheel drive Ram then it can be towed using a tow dolly with the REAR wheels off the ground. This is in the recreational towing section of the owner's manual, page 711. If you do have a 4x4 then for base plates I recommend # RM-52289-4. And for a compatible tow bar I recommend the 10,000 pound capacity Blackhawk All-Terrain tow bar # RM-422. • Can a 2017 Ford Fiesta be Flat Towed With 200 Miles on it and Recommended Parts Needed to Flat Tow
  • I checked an online version of the owner's manual about flat towing for your 2017 Ford Fiesta and although I didn't find anything in there about a mileage requirement before flat towing, it is good practice to get at least 500 miles on a new vehicle before doing anything to or with it. This gives the vehicle a chance to break-in. The manual does say to put about 300 miles on new tires so I recommend going on a little road trip before flat towing your Fiesta. To flat tow your Fiesta you...

This is the case for any set of base plates. For a compatible tow bar I recommend the Excali-Bar # DM9511009. This tow bar is rated for 10,500 pounds and comes with...
