2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 4-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit

Diode kit allows you to use your Jeep Grand Cherokee's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from your RV. Wires 2-wire and 3-wire systems to operate as a combined lighting systems. Includes 7-wire to 4-wire Flexo-Coil electrical cord.

Features:

  • Lets you wire your vehicle to accept your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights for flat towing
  • Wires towed car as combined system so that brake and turn signals travel along same wire
  • Prevents electrical feedback and the damage it can cause to your vehicle's electrical components
  • Diodes powder coated aluminum case is corrosion resistant and provides protection from the elements
  • Brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if used with supplemental braking system
  • Flexo-Coil cord is resitant to water, oil, chemicals, and has silicone-injected plugs to prevent corrosion
  • Includes: 4 Hy-Power diodes; 30' long, 4-wire harness; wire connectors; cable ties; 1 ring terminal; 3' long plastic loom, 8 ft coiled cord, vehicle mounting bracket, and socket
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Diode Max amperage: 85 amps
  • Diode Max voltage: 24 volts
  • Coiled cord max length: 8'
  • Coiled cord retracted length: 15"

Note: For applications that have separate lighting, this kit will cause your brake lights to function as both brake and turn signal lights. A wiring converter (118158 - sold separately) and 2 additional diodes (RM-792) will be needed if you want to retain separate turn and brake signals.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system". When you hook up for flat towing using this kit, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this kit wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster Diode Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit Installation - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Speaker 1: Today on our 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we're going to be taking a look at showing you how to install the Roadmaster diode 7 wire to 4 wire flexi-coil wiring kit, part number RM-15247. This is what a diode kit looks like when it's installed. Its going to be one of five components in a flat tow setup. You're going to need a tow bar, a base plate, a braking system and safety cables. What this style is going to do, it's going to allow you to activate the lighting functions on your Jeep from your RV while it's being flat towed. The diodes are going to prevent feedback from both vehicles when hooked together, in turn protecting the wiring in both.

This kit will allow you to turn you Jeep's separate lighting system or three wire system into a combined system by combining your brake and turn signal without damaging your factory wiring. This diode kit is also going to come with an 8 foot flexi-coil electrical cord to connect your RV to your Jeep to activate those lights and turn signals. As far as the installation goes, it is a fairly straight forward installation. It can be done at home in your garage or in your driveway. You will have to do some splicing to connect your diodes to your factory wiring and your tail lights and you will have to run your wire from the front of the vehicle to the back. Other than that, there's not going to be any drilling, welding or anything like that required.

It's going to come with all the necessary parts to get it installed. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let me show you how to get it installed.I like to start in the front. This is where my forward pull is going to be sitting. So I dangle a little bit out. I just ran it down through here, right behind my headlight.

What you want to do, you look right down next to the battery. I took some extra and I bundled it up right there and zip tied it right in place. I ran it around behind my cables here, three wires. I fed it right underneath this and what I did was took an airline tube and used a hanger and if we go that way, you're going to hit the exhaust manifold. So what I did is I actually ran it right down through here and what it does it it comes out behind my wheel well liner.

Drop my wire down through there. You can see the hole in the frame. I just ran it through that hole across, came right out of this corner. What you've got to keep in mind is when you're running it, anything that comes off of the tire could damage it, so we're going to try not to cross it through here.So I want to run along the inside of the frame here. I zip tie it up against it. I ran it right through the center of this cross bracket right here, ran it across my frame behind this cross piece, zip tied it to this existing hard line, went up above my fuel tank to this inside and where the fuel tank is held up by these braces, I just ran it right behind the three braces over the top of the axle. We want to stay away from anything hot or moving. What I'm actually going to do . bring the vehicle down a little bit. I'm actually going to go up above this where this existing line is, I'm going to zip tie it right there and come up above it. Remember this individual doesn't have a spare tire. So we do have a spare tire that will cross here. So once we come up above this, then we'll decide which way we're going to go because we're going to be tying into both tail lights. So you can see we had an existing line here on our driver's side. We don't have any on the passenger side. You can see I ran a zip tie. We'll just run a couple more. Run through all of them. Make sure you pull it tight and we'll cut off our excess. Our green wire is going to be our passenger side. Yellow and brown, drivers side and white is going to be our ground. Now what we need to do is split all of our wires like I did the green one here. We're going to go up to where I zip tied it and what we want to do is we're going to take our green and brown wire. We're going to route them over to our passenger side. We're going to up above our mounting plate for our spare tire. If you have a spare tire, you're going to want to take that down.Zip tie your green and brown wire over here to this existing wiring to keep it up and out of the way. Now your kit does some with zip ties. I recommend getting some longer ones, but the shorter ones will work for this. Now I'm going to take my white, my green and my brown wire, we're going to run it over to the passenger side. What I'm going to do, I'm going to run it right along this existing wiring right up here. Go ahead and throw in a couple zip ties here. Get our wires through and I'm going to up above the spare tire rack here. We're going to take and go through this frame hole. Then we'll take our yellow wire, this wiring right here. The wiring is running up to our tail lights. I zip tied it right here. We can run the extra wire up to our tail light and we'll tie it in. You probably want to take a T-25 star bit and remove the two star bolts, star head bolts there that are holding the tail light in place. And do that same thing on the passenger side. Disconnect your wiring. Push down.Like that. And right down on the bottom, I have a little plastic fastener. Take some needle nose pliers, pinch the two ends together and just feed it right through the hole like that. We'll set our tail light aside for now. We're going to repeat that for the passenger side. We can use a coat hanger or whatever you used to run your wire, you can use a bolt, something that has a little bit of weight and some string. Drop it down to the bottom like that. We'll take our three wires, just run them through and pull them up like that. We'll do the same thing on the driver's side. These are going to be our diodes. You're going to see one on the side has one. It says out. One side says in. The outside is going to go to the tail light. The in is going to go to the wiring to the vehicle. Now we've tested them and determined that our blue wire, or our white wire with the blue stripe is going to be our brake. Our white wire with the brown strips is going to be our running lights. Now, because we have a separate turn signal, our motor home is going to combine them. So we're going to combine our turn signal to our brake light. So what we're going to do, green wire, strip back and stripping back a little bit extra. Go ahead and cut our white wire to the brown. Put one of our butt connectors on our diode. They're in place. we're going to crimp that down. Our white wire with the brown stripe, go ahead and put one on there. Crimp it down. And we're going to take our brown and white wire, combine those together, crimp those down and install the diode just like that. We're going to do the same thing with this wire. Now do you see how the inside of that kind of cups It's a good idea to take some black silicone and just kind of fill it in so if any moisture gets in there, it doesn't sit and corrode the connections. Next we need to mount our diodes. They have double sided tape on the back side. Then we're going to plug inaudible 00:08:23 high so we'll take some rubbing alcohol, anything that will clean up the area really well. Make sure it's good and dry. Press it into place. Now we get our tail light back in place. And we're going to make sure that our wiring is out of the way there. Install our screws. Next think we want to do, we want to cut our white wire right about there. You can see our white wire is pretty short. I would suggest maybe picking up about four foot of extra wire. So we need to run this up to our driver side tail light. Now what we're going to do is strip back this wire here. It's going to the front of the vehicle. We're going to add a ring terminal. We're going to ground this right to the vehicle. The kit's going to come with a self tapping screw. I'm going to put it right here. We're going to make sure that it's on metal, it's not on any plastic. It's a good idea, since this is on the outside of the vehicle to use heat shrink to help protect that connection. It will inaudible 00:09:49 from any moisture or anything like that. We'll take a heat gun and shrink that butt connector up there. We already determined that our white wire with the purple stripe is going to be our running light signal. And our white with the blue stripe is going to be our brake and turn. Our yellow wire is going to be for our brake and turn, which is our white wire with the blue stripe. Then our jumper for our tail lights is coming from our passenger side. It's going to go to the white with the purple stripe. We're going to repeat the same process with filling it in with silicone and mounting them on our wall. Now we're going to mount our fore pole with our wiring. First, take a phillips screwdriver and remove this tap screw here. It's very little, so don't lose it. We should be able to get our inside out. You might have to push it from the back just a little bit, just like that. Now we're going to take our wiring, we're going to feed it through the back of our holder here just like this. And slide that up. Now we want to separate our wires like this and go ahead and strip off the ends. White wire is going to be ground. That's going to be number one. Screw facing up. It's going to be the bottom left corner here. So these are going to have little tiny screws. You don't have to take these all the way out, just loosen them enough that you can get the wire inside. One, two. This is going to be the bottom right corner. That's going to be our running lights. Three, the top right corner. That's going to be our left turn signal and brake light combined. Then last is going to be our right turn signal. Go ahead and take this back out of the top. Again, it is small so don't lose it.Slide it there. Put this back in, make sure that the screw goes to the top. Get that in and we line up the holes. Get this screw back in place here. Just like that. Now our two screws and bolts and nuts here. These come in your kit. Push it up like that. We'll use a 10 millimeter wrench and a phillips screwdriver and tighten it into place. Now we're ready to test it out, make sure everything is working correctly. Then that'll do it for looking at an installation on a Roadmaster diode seven wire to four wire flexi-coil wiring kit, part number RN-15247 on our 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

2015 Ford C-Max

I used this kit on a 2015 Ford C-Max Energi. All in all the installation kit was complete except it was missing the self tapping screw. This was not a problem since I was able to attach the ground wire to an existing ground connection without having to use the screw. It also did not have any screws (2) to attach the socket bracket to the baseplate (I used a Blue Ox BX2639 baseplate). Luckily I had a couple laying around. The hardest part was routing the wire harness throughout the undercarriage of the vehicle. I used almost all the wire ties for this part of the installation. I also had to purchase additional wire to run across the rear of the vehicle ( I needed additional green wire for the right side brake and directional and brown to jump to the other side for the parking lights. The directions provided in the kit were helpful but I relied quite a bit on the installation videos you provided. I found the videos provided much more detail and guidance. 584062

One major draw back that is see is that none of the wire connector spades you crimp on the end of the wires were of the Heat Shrink type. This leaves the wire exposed to water and possible corrosion. Need to spend the extra $$$'s and upgrade the spade connectors to the Heat Shrink type. 369378

  • Tow Bar Wiring Harness Recommendation for a 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk
  • We have installed diode kits on Jeep Cherokee Trailhawks (and other models that have LED lights) and they have worked fine. For a diode kit I recommend # RM-15247. I have also included links to a couple of videos showing example installations. You can see the vehicles have the LED tail light assemblies like on your 2016 Cherokee. If your Cherokee has 4 wheel drive or the Active Drive II system, to maintain the vehicle's stable steering while being flat towed you will want to install...

  • Installing Roadmaster Towing Combo Kit in a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • The Roadmaster Kit # RM-9243-2 is fairly straightforward for anyone who's experienced with wiring. If you installed the brake controller in your RV you can install this kit as well. I attached an install video of the diode kit # RM-15247 being installed. This kit is just the wiring of the # RM-9243-2 so you can use it as a guide.

  • Recommended Parts Needed To Flat-Tow 2008 GMC Canyon 4-Wheel Drive
  • When flat towing a vehicle there are five items needed. You need base plates for the towed vehicle, a tow bar, safety cables, lighting for the towed vehicle, and a supplemental brake system. I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit, part # BX1656. The design of this kit means less of the bracket is visible. For a tow bar I recommend the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar, part # BX7365. This tow bar has safety cables included. The tow bar wiring kit I recommend is part # RM-15247. Since you...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2016 Toyota Corolla with Manual Transmission Behind Another Vehicle
  • The online owner's manual for your 2016 Toyota Corolla indicates on pages 162-163 that the version with manual transmission CAN be flat towed behind another vehicle but that the automatic transmission version CANNOT be towed 4-wheels-down. For the towable manual model the procedure to prepare the car for this process is noted on page 163. I suggest checking your own printed manual just in case it offers different and/or additional information. Check the index under "T" to find the towing...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 1999 Chevy Tracker Behind an RV
  • Base plates of one manufacturer can often be used with a tow bar from another manufacturer but you need adapters to do it. I recommend getting both the base plates and tow bar from the same manufacturer to avoid the adapters altogether. I recommend the Demco base plates # DM9518079 for you with a Demco tow bar like the Commander # DM9511010. In addition to the base plates and compatible tow bar you will also need safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking when flat towing the...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 1998 Jeep TJ Behind Motorhome
  • To flat tow your 1998 Jeep TJ behind your motorhome you will need a number of items, and all are outlined in the linked article on flat towing. These include a tow bar, safety cables, a wiring/lighting kit, and base plates and a braking system for the towed Jeep. Price for each item is shown on its individual page. For base plates you can use the linked page; this will allow you to select the type of front bumper you have on the Jeep as this affects the fit of base plates. For a u-channel...

  • Fit and Compatibility of Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plates on a 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk V6 Engine
  • Great news! The Roadmaster EZ5 # RM-521446-5 does indeed fit the 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk V6 engine without Active Air Shutters. I have linked a video of this base plate kit being installed on a similar vehicle to yours for you to check out. A great tow bar for this base plate kit is the Falcon All-Terrain Tow Bar # RM-522. This tow bar is capable of towing up to 6,000lbs and the hassle-free latches will let you easily release your car even on unlevel ground.. Some other items...

  • Is it Possible to Flat-Tow a 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 Behind a Motorhome?
  • You can tow your 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 behind your motorhome if it is four-wheel drive, so long as you have a 2-speed transfer case with a neutral setting. While it is also possible to do so with a two-wheel drive version, it will take an extra step. For a 2WD with a 4.3L V6, as well as a 2WD with a 5.3L V8, you will need to have a lube pump kit installed, or for a 6.2L V8, you will have to have a drive shaft disconnect. A base plate kit such as the Blue Ox, # BX1710, is a confirmed...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow Scion xA
  • According to my research, a 2004, 2005 or 2006 Scion xA can be flat towed if it's equipped with a manual transmission. Automatic transmission-equipped vehicles must be towed using a tow dolly like part # RM-2000-1. I'd recommend you consult your owner's manual for confirmation. To flat tow the vehicle, you'll need base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, a wiring solution so the vehicle taillights work along with those of the motorhome and a supplemental braking system. For a base...

  • Sounds like you are trying to power the taillights of your trailer as it is being flat-towed behind an RV and Jeep. Connecting 4-way wires to the diode kit you have with something like the part # 18252 would accomplish this.

  • Can Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring RM-15247 Be Used On 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • Since the wiring kit has a different use than the Ready Brake system on your Wrangler Unlimited, they can both be used at the same time. The Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring, part # RM-15247 lets you use the Jeep tail lights and wiring system and will operate with the RV brake, turn, and tail light system. With the included diodes, it helps prevent electrical feedback which can cause damage to the vehicle wiring.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2014 Nissan Versa Note Behind an RV
  • When on a tow dolly the vehicle steering wheel should be locked so its wheels cannot turn. The dolly likely has a steering lock out or pin on it that you would have to remove or disengage so that the dolly can pivot while the vehicle is on it. That is probably why you had problems using the tow dolly. When flat towing the steering wheel has to be unlocked because that allows the tires to turn when the RV turns. The base plates and tow bar can more than handle the forces that allow this...
