Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Changing from a Separate to a Combined Lighting System

Your vehicle ordinarily operates on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, this means that your vehicle will have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you hook up for flat towing using this harness, however, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed - with separate lighting - when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this harness wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring - Plugs into Vehicle Wiring - HM56302 Review

Today we're going to review part number HM56302. This is the Hopkins custom tail light wiring kit for towed vehicles. This is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2009-2013 Honda Fit vehicles. On a custom fit part I always recommend to go to our website and use our fit guide. Put in the year and model of your vehicle and that will tell you if this will work for your application. This harness will let you wire your vehicle to accept your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights for flat towing.

This wires the towed car as a combined system, so that the brake and the turn signals will travel along the same wire. It does provide this four way flat plug at the front of your towed car to connect to your motor home. When you connect this, you can see that the connectors do plug in very quickly and easily. There's no cutting or splicing of wires. Basically, you'll just locate your connection points which are behind your vehicle's tail lights and plug these in line with those.

This part does prevent electrical feedback. This is to safeguard your towed car's electrical system. The weather proof box keeps the built in diodes protected. Also, when this is installed on your vehicle and you unhook from your RV or motor home, this won't interfere with your electrical system when it's not hooked up to the RV. This part is custom designed for your vehicle. It includes everything shown here.

It includes the mounting brackets and dielectric grease, some cable ties, two mounting screws for the mounting bracket, and a grounding screw. I'm going to show you in a minute how these hook up. Also, when you do install this, this will run this four way up to the front of your towed vehicle, which you do need to have as an extension loop to connect from this to your RV or motor home. We do sell those separately on our website, and they are listed on this product page as a related product. There are a few different ones available. Also, one other thing. A brake light relay might be required if you use this with a supplemental braking system.

The relay we do sell separately as a related product. It is part number RM-88400. Basically, what happens is because this harness will wire your vehicle as a combined system, the brake light relay might be required if you're using the supplemental braking system. In a supplemental braking system, what happens is that it depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. Without a relay, that brake signal from your towed car with override the turn signals sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, and that creates a hazard. Just to show you briefly how this installs, what you'll do is go to the back of the vehicle and access behind the tail light. Start on the driver's side. Take this T connector right here that has the yellow wire in it and plug the harness from the tail lights in line to that. This length of wire with the green in it you'll run over to the passenger side, and you'll do the same thing. Plug this in behind the tail lights. Your converter here . Basically, what you'll want to do is, you can use these cable ties, you'll want to attach these to a nice, solid surface so it doesn't bounce around. Then what you're going to do is take this length of wire that will run all the way to the front of the vehicle and your four ways will attach right here. You'll notice on the four way you'll have a white wire coming out. That's a ground. You do need to connect that part to operate. They do include a grounding screw that you can drill a hole and connect your ground up. It does have a dust cap, so that when you're not plugged in to your RV or motor home, you can just put your dust cap over there to protect the terminals from any damage. Once you get up to the front what you can do is take this mounting bracket, and again it has the two screws that you can run through here and mount to the front of the vehicle. Basically all you have to do is put this in there. Make sure your dust cap goes through there. Then you'll notice, once it's lined up correctly, you just close it like that and then run your mounting screws through there. This will be at the front of your car. So when you're . Put the cap on it when you're not using it. When you're plugging in to be towed you just plug in like that. That should do it for the review on part number HM56302. This is the Hopkins custom tail light wiring kit for towed vehicles.

Very easy to install. Fit my 2012 Honda Fit perfectly. One year later it's working perfectly. Everything I've bought from this company I'm extremely happy with. 584393

Product worked great. I chose to route the wiring inside the vehicle under door trim. It was actually pretty easy. I went through the firewall where the large bundle goes through above the brake peddle for a very clean install. Super easy install in the back. 460512

I installed this harness in my 2013 Honda Fit. The installation was simple. This option uses the brake light for the turn signal vs. utilizing the dedicated amber bulb, but it works just fine. I also have a Roadmaster Even Brake that did require the brake switch relay for this setup to work properly since the brake light and turn signal uses the same bulb. 400613

Arrived on time. quality made product and easy to install. I actually ran the 4 pin connector wire to the front of my 2013 Honda Fit via the front and rear door thresholds. Once I reached the brake pedal I removed the side panel where the hood latch is located and fed the wire through the rubber grommet hole for the door electric switches. I then used a coat hanger and pulled the wire through the inner fender and down to the front grill. Under the hood I clean it all up with some zip ties. This will keep the line from being exposed to the elements. 235379

Do you have a question about this Tow Bar Wiring?

  • Can a 2013 Honda Fit Be Flat Towed
  • I have a copy of the 2013 Honda Fit Owners Manual that I found online, and it states that both manual and automatic transmission equipped Fit models can indeed be towed behind a motorhome IF the specific procedures shown are followed. You can find this information by doing a Google search on '2013 Honda Fit Owners Manual'. Be sure to read the instructions carefully and completely, as they're pretty specific and if they aren't followed to the letter, you can damage the drivetrain of your...

It would plug right into the connector at the front of the towed vehicle provided by the Hopkins Towed Vehicle Wiring Harness you referenced, part # HM56302.
