Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Changing from a Separate to a Combined Lighting System

Your vehicle ordinarily operates on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, this means that your vehicle will have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you hook up for flat towing using this harness, however, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed - with separate lighting - when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this harness wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Was easier to remove the tires on the driver side to install

Ordered Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit (#HM56203) for my 2005 Jeep Liberty that I am currently in the process of preparing to flat tow. Ordered this kit due to the fact that the connections were plug in as opposed to having to splice into existing wiring as many of the other kits offered required. Kit was delivered 4 days after order was placed and was shipped regular UPS, unheard of! Installed kit today and couldn’t be happier. There weren’t any instructions sent with the kit but I had looked at the installation video on your website before ordering the kit and that was basically all the information I needed. Previously ordered a Roadmaster baseplate for the Jeep and also completely satisfied with that item. Wished I would have ordered the Brake Buddy that the wife ordered today back when I had her order the baseplate, could have saved me a couple of Ben Franklins ($xxx)! It was on sale then. I am excited about getting the Brake Buddy installed and hitting the road. Everything we have ordered has been superior quality, etrailer has better pricing than either one of the two RV dealers in town and I can usually wait a week to get what I need.

2007 Jeep Liberty

Wow I'm so happy that I ordered this harness from etrailer. We had just purchased an 07 liberty and had a trip planned but needed lights before we could travel, after just about three days the kit arrived. Only took about 90 minutes to install I suggest watching their you tube video. The next day we were on the road.
Thanks etrailer for the fast shipping.
Mike. M.

The wiring kit to tow our 05’ Jeep Liberty worked great. I had to cut off the flat end and wire it to our round receptacle on the Jeep to fit the Motorhome. The only thing that is time consuming is running the wire from the rear to the front while scooting around under the Jeep. Otherwise a piece of cake.

prety easy to install. just folow instr uctions

the hitch and wiring worked great

The product is still working great after a year and a lot of miles.

It’s working great

2007 Jeep Liberty

This harness provided exactly what I needed and I installed it on my Jeep Liberty and towed this vehicle across the United States without any problems. Thanks for the quick service. I would recommend this product and etrailer. Thanks

That what we love to hear Jerry S!!! Hopkins appreciates your business and we are grateful you purchased our Wiring Kit. If you have any concerns or questions, please get in contact with etrailer customer service. Thank you!

Jeep Liberty

Installation was a breeze and after a year of pulling my Jeep Liberty behind our rv, I'm still very pleased with the harness. It sure beats breaking into the existing factory wiring on your vehicle! The fact that you can just plug the light sockets and bulbs into a spare hole in the existing tail lights means there is virtually no modifications necessary.

Good design, easy to install, make sure you connect a good ground or the lights will not work. Installed in about 2 hours.

Base plate bx1119 and wiring kit hm56203 both were very easy to install , just follow the easy directions .I'm 73 and it only took me 4 hours to completely install both. I did it with the jeep sitting flat on garage floor.

Hi very good lots better than using magnetic mount tow lights
Ross J - 07/07/2017

This harness was a snap-in on my 2006 Jeep Liberty. Installation took less than 10 minutes, and that included dropping one screw and crawling around on my hands and knees to find it.
I sold that Jeep Liberty for a different one, and the swapping from the old jeep to the new one couldn't have been easier.
I look at it this way: It was priced right; it shipped fast, it installed easily, and it's worked flawlessly. What more can you ask for?

2003 Jeep Liberty

I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty that I pull behind a 38' RV...This was an easy install, would have been super easy if I had a lift...crawling under the vehicle to secure the wiring was the only painful experience. Directions and videos were very helpful. I cut the 4 way plug off and wired it for a 7 to 6 pin coiled cable.

Again, perfect transaction and great products... When I'm looking for that thing (anything trailer or towing) I cant even explain I always go here 1st....

Used it many times over the year and all is good!!

2005 Jeep Liberty

All hooked up and works great on a 2005 Jeep Liberty as aTOAD vehicle.

I got this wireing harness for our jeep. It took about 1 hour to install an run wires. We tow the jeep all over. An had no trouble at all.

2005 Jeep Liberty

product worked as advertised. However on my 2005 jeep liberty the turn signal is a separate yellow light below the Break / tail light. it would be Nice if the harness used the same lights. But it works fine like it is.

As always shipped fast and great produc t.

I very satisfied with custom light kit, no need to splice wires just hook up and plug in. Customer service was top notch, everyone there knows their products and make sure of the right product u need. I ordered the wrong my mistake and got what i needed the next day. THANKS, CARMEL D.

2005 Jeep Liberty

Fit as advertised, instructions were straight forward. Shipping was fast.

Thanks Jim for reviewing the Wiring Kit!! Hopkins appreciates your business.

  • Can Trailer Wiring and Towed Vehicle Wiring be Installed Together on a 2002 Jeep Liberty
Yes, the trailer wiring harness, part # 118524, and the towed vehicle wiring kit, part # HM56203, can be used together. They both plug in behind the tail lights and plug into each other. We've actually installed harnesses in this same fashion here. This way you'll have a 4-way at the Jeep's rear to tow a trailer and a 4-way on the front of the Jeep to tow it behind a motorhome.

First, make sure that all connectors for Hopkins 4-pole wiring harness # HM56203 are fully-seated together at the Liberty's tail lights and that the locking clips are engaged. Next, check the white ground wire to be certain it is tightly affixed to a clean bare metal spot on the car's metalwork. Sand off primer/paint and/or clean off any other material or contaminants that might prevent metal-to-metal contact. This ground wire is most often the cause for lighting issues like yours. You...

The correct Blue Ox base plate kit for your 2007 Jeep Liberty is the part # BX1122. Sounds like you already have a tow bar and all you need is wiring. • Will Hopkins HM56203 Flat Tow Wiring Harness Operate License Plate Lamps on Vehicle
Depending on what point in the factory taillight harness the license plate lamp is wired in, it's entirely possible that the license plate lamp on your 2007 Liberty could be bypassed when flat towing. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any specific information on this, either online or from Hopkins. If your license plate lamp doesn't illuminate when flat towing, you would indeed need to run a jumper from the # HM56203 harness to your license plate lamp. You can see an install video...
