Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because your vehicle has a combined lighting system - wherein the brake signals and the turn signals are carried on a single wire - a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Simple installation and excellent quality product! I installed this harness on my 2018 Jeep Wrangler. After one year it is still performing flawlessly. Don’t do like I did on my first tow vehicle and pay someone hundreds to thousands of dollars to do something so easy. Thank you etrailer and Hopkins for easy to follow instructions and videos! 728488

Product was excellent, and went together in tail lights. However, on Drivers Side, had an bottom insert to pull out, for wiring to tail lights, and on Passenger side had to drill 1 1/4 hole, for wiring to tail light. The other similar product Etrailer carries has a neat video, which I studied. Also, be careful on running the wire across the rear. I had to use 11 inch tie raps on frame, and ran it in very rear frame away from muffler, pipes and moving shocks, torrosion bar, springs, etc. Also, had to work at running wires from back to front. Plan to spend some time on this, and again, get longer tie raps. To tie around square supports I used 1 and 1/2 11 inch raps combining to 11" inch together to make about a 16 inch rap. Hope this helps but I am sure many of you have good ole American know how! One last thing. I think the other similar product, which was not immediately available , has another connection for a rear trailer hitch ? I think I had this was on my older jeep? Would strongly look at this and consider it. E Trailer has this but it had a long back order, so needed something. 127276

Ask the Experts about this Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring

  • Availability of Plug-In Tow Bar Wiring Kit for 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
I do have a great lighting solution for you, however the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit # HM56200 that you referenced won't work on your 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. This custom harness is designed to fit earlier model Wranglers (up through the 2018 model year) and isn't compatible with the new generation. There isn't a similar custom plug-in harness available for your Jeep. If you'd rather not splice into the factory wiring on the vehicle (which I can certainly understand) another...

  • Replacing Malfunctioning Flat Towing Wiring Harness on 2014 Jeep Wrangler
From what you describe, the the relays in the converter are going bad, and my contact at Hopkins agrees. The relays aren't readily accessible and aren't designed to be replaceable, so your best bet would be to replace the # HM56200 harness entirely. Or, you could go in a different direction with a more reliable hardwired system like the # RM-15267 from Roadmaster. Installation of this product would mean tapping into the wiring harnesses for the taillights of your Jeep, but this installation...

  • Will Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit # HM56200 Function with Jeep Battery Disconnected
The battery of your 2009 Jeep Wrangler will not affect the functioning of the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit # HM56200 that you mentioned. This harness draws the power for the Jeep taillights from the tow vehicle so your battery being disconnected won't be an issue at all.

  • Hopkins Wiring Kit to Flat Tow 2018 Jeep Wrangler
We do have a Hopkins wiring kit that will work with your 2018 Jeep Wrangler, but the wiring kit you mentioned is not available, like you said. What we know will work for your '18 Wrangler is the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # HM56200. We know this will work because of numerous customer reviews stating they have installed it, and we have also installed it on a 2018 Wrangler. I have added a link below to a video of that install for you to check out.

  • Tow Bar Wiring Recommendation for 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
The Hopkins Tow Bar wiring kit part # HM56200 is a confirmed fit for your 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. • No Brake Lights After Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit Installation
If I understand correctly that you've installed the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # HM56200 and now your brake lights are failing, this could be few things so we'll go through some troubleshooting steps here. • Is Brake Light Relay Required w/Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring & SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO on 2017 Jeep Wrangler
Yes, if you were to use anything other than a magnetic light kit on your 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited you will need to use the brake light relay # RM-88400. The relay is meant to prevent the Jeep's brake signal for overriding the turn signal coming from the tow vehicle/RV when applying the brakes with a turn signal on. So if you use the Hopkins wiring harness # HM56200 you will need to use the brake light relay. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation of the...

  • Using Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring on 2011 Jeep Wrangler That Needs Charge Wire From RV
You can use the Hopkins tow bar light kit part # HM56200 on your 2011 Jeep Wrangler as it's a confirmed fit, but the 4-way ends of this and the # A10-6034VP don't match as they are both male 4-ways. So what you could do is cut off the 4-way of either side and install the # HM48190 in place of it and you'd be able to make the connectors as needed. For a coiled extension to adapt the 7-way or your RV to the 6-way of the adapter you'd then want the # RM-1676-7 which will carry the charge...

  • Does Brake Pedal Activation of Supplemental Braking Affect Flat Tow Lighting Solutions for Toad
If you use a supplemental braking system that applies the brake pedal of the vehicle and the taillights come on with the key in the off position there are a couple solutions for this but it really depends on a few things. Does the vehicle require the battery be disconnected when flat towing? If so then the problem wouldn't be an issue. Does the vehicle have turn signals that operate separately from the brake lights? If so that typically isn't a problem. In some cases a brake lite relay...

It's not recommended to install trailer wiring and flat tow wiring that uses the same taillight harness T-connection. Since you have trailer wiring installed already what would work best is a diode kit which will give you the ability to activate the taillights with you tow vehicle and not interfere with the taillight wiring. This is the first time I have heard of this issue with any Hopkins tow bar wiring harness such as # HM56200 on a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Since this harness plugs in line with the tail light wiring there isn't a way that it could have been connected in the wrong spot.
