Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because your vehicle has a combined lighting system - wherein the brake signals and the turn signals are carried on a single wire - a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Installed this product on a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. I watched the video on installing this product and it really helped with the install. The install was really easy and I like the fact that I did not have to splice into the Jeep's wiring. Highly recommend this product. 168502

I'm really impressed with this wiring kit. Using the video and the well written directions, the hardest part of this job was running the wire. All the plugs appear to be factory plugs. 705826

Have used E Trailer a number of times as always there service is Great. I ordered a trailer towing wiring harnesses for my wrangler (plug and play) and the one they recommend was great 708228

Product was excellent, and went together in tail lights. However, on Drivers Side, had an bottom insert to pull out, for wiring to tail lights, and on Passenger side had to drill 1 1/4 hole, for wiring to tail light. The other similar product Etrailer carries has a neat video, which I studied. Also, be careful on running the wire across the rear. I had to use 11 inch tie raps on frame, and ran it in very rear frame away from muffler, pipes and moving shocks, torrosion bar, springs, etc. Also, had to work at running wires from back to front. Plan to spend some time on this, and again, get longer tie raps. To tie around square supports I used 1 and 1/2 11 inch raps combining to 11" inch together to make about a 16 inch rap. Hope this helps but I am sure many of you have good ole American know how! One last thing. I think the other similar product, which was not immediately available , has another connection for a rear trailer hitch ? I think I had this was on my older jeep? Would strongly look at this and consider it. E Trailer has this but it had a long back order, so needed something. 127276

Wiring was easy to install and has worked well towing over 5K miles. The only change I made was to remove the 4 pin connector and installing a 6 pin connector to match my motor home cable. 683843

2016 Jeep Wrangler

I have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Sport Unlimited 4 door, after I installed the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles - HM56200, I found I had to install the Road-Master Brake Lite Relay for Towed Vehicles - RM-88400 , I'm using a supplemental brake system, when the brake is depressed with ignition off, the brake lights come on and cancel out any directional signal on my toad, installing the relay solved this problem. I watched the video and this was helpful. Installation took me a few hours, climbing under the dash was not an easy chore for me, I'm not as young as I want to be, had to purchase 16 gauge Red wire to run to Fuse box under the hood, also I recommend having extra wire ties to do this. I recommend both products, easy to install and good quality. 319139

Product arrived on time and as described. The kit went in fast, and I ran better than 90% inside the vehicle frame. If you're going to purchase this and install on a Wrangler, get a small tube of caulk to refill the hole you'll need to poke in the insulating foam by the tail light assembly. 210885

Ask the Experts about this Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring

  • Is Brake Light Relay Required w/Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring & SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO on 2017 Jeep Wrangler
Yes, if you were to use anything other than a magnetic light kit on your 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited you will need to use the brake light relay # RM-88400. The relay is meant to prevent the Jeep's brake signal for overriding the turn signal coming from the tow vehicle/RV when applying the brakes with a turn signal on. So if you use the Hopkins wiring harness # HM56200 you will need to use the brake light relay. I have included a link to a video showing an example installation of the...

  • Replacing Malfunctioning Flat Towing Wiring Harness on 2014 Jeep Wrangler
From what you describe, the the relays in the converter are going bad, and my contact at Hopkins agrees. The relays aren't readily accessible and aren't designed to be replaceable, so your best bet would be to replace the # HM56200 harness entirely. Or, you could go in a different direction with a more reliable hardwired system like the # RM-15267 from Roadmaster. Installation of this product would mean tapping into the wiring harnesses for the taillights of your Jeep, but this installation...

I do have a great lighting solution for you, however the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit # HM56200 that you referenced won't work on your 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. This custom harness is designed to fit earlier model Wranglers (up through the 2018 model year) and isn't compatible with the new generation. There isn't a similar custom plug-in harness available for your Jeep. If you'd rather not splice into the factory wiring on the vehicle (which I can certainly understand) another...

  • Flat Tow Wiring Recommendation for 2014 Jeep Wrangler that has Trailer Wiring
It's not recommended to install trailer wiring and flat tow wiring that uses the same taillight harness T-connection. Since you have trailer wiring installed already what would work best is a diode kit which will give you the ability to activate the taillights with you tow vehicle and not interfere with the taillight wiring. • Does Brake Pedal Activation of Supplemental Braking Affect Flat Tow Lighting Solutions for Toad
If you use a supplemental braking system that applies the brake pedal of the vehicle and the taillights come on with the key in the off position there are a couple solutions for this but it really depends on a few things. Does the vehicle require the battery be disconnected when flat towing? If so then the problem wouldn't be an issue. Does the vehicle have turn signals that operate separately from the brake lights? If so that typically isn't a problem. In some cases a brake lite relay...

This is the first time I have heard of this issue with any Hopkins tow bar wiring harness such as # HM56200 on a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Since this harness plugs in line with the tail light wiring there isn't a way that it could have been connected in the wrong spot. It is possible though that there is a bent pin or maybe corrosion that is causing a short to jump to the reverse light on that one side. That is the first thing I would check. If there is voltage going into the box but not coming out the problem is internal of the box and it would need to be replaced/warrantied. If there isn't voltage going into the box the problem would be connectors not making a decent connection.
