Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because your vehicle has a combined lighting system - wherein the brake signals and the turn signals are carried on a single wire - a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring - Plugs into Vehicle Wiring - HM56108 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number HM56108. This is the Hopkins Custom Taillight Wiring Kit for towed vehicles. This product is going to fit certain years and models of the GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox. It's going to let you wire your vehicle to accept your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights for flat towing. It does provide the four-way flat plug at the front of the vehicle that way you can easily connect it to your motor home. Now it is going to prevent electrical feedback to safeguard the towed vehicle's electrical system.

It's got the weather-proof box. This is going to keep the built-in diodes protected and it won't interfere with electrical system when the towed car is not hooked up to the RV, so you don't have to worry about that. This is custom designed for your vehicle. It's going to include your wiring harness. It's going to come with a mounting bracket. It's going to come with all the installation hardware.

It's going to come with some zip ties and terminal grease as well as some detailed instructions to help you through the installation process. The extension loop for connecting the towed car to the RV is sold separately, you can find that here on our website, and brake light relay part number RM-88400 is sold separately. That may be required if used with supplemental braking systems. Now this unit is designed install pretty quick and easily. You don't have to worry about cutting or splicing any of your wires. All you need to do is plug in your connectors.

Your connection points are going to be located behind your vehicle's taillights. The plugs are going to match up perfectly with the ones on your vehicle. This side right here is going to go over to the driver's side of the vehicle, that's the end with the yellow wire. This side right here has got a little bit more wiring because you're going to have to route it according to the instructions, so they give you plenty of wiring to do that. That's going to go over to the passenger side. Again, the plugs are going to match up perfectly, they're going to snap-lock together for a nice, tight, secure fit.

Once you have those plugged in, you can go ahead and mount your converter. That's going to be the black box right here. Get it to a nice, clean, out-of-the-way location. You can mount it with the some of the included zip ties. Then you're going to need to route the four-way connector up towards front of the vehicle, towards the center of the vehicle and secure it with the included mounting bracket and the provided hardware. You're going to need to make a ground connection. It's going to be the white wire with the ring terminal attached to it. It's going to come with a self-tapping screw to make that ground to a nice, clean metal surface. Once you have all that connected, though, you can go ahead and use any of the extra zip ties that you have to secure any of your excess wires up and out of the way, taking up any of the slack that you may have in the wiring. This bracket's a really neat bracket. Pretty small and compact. The plug just fits right in there. It's got a little loop area for the tethered dustcap that goes over like that, so that way your connection points can be covered up when you're not using it just like that. Then when you do need to make your connection, just take off the dustcap, plug in your extension loop, hook it up to your RV, and then you're going to be ready to head down the road. That's going to do it for today's look at part number HM56108.

2015 Chevrolet Equinox

I installed a tow bar setup on my parents Chevy Equinox about a year ago so they could pull it behind their motor home. With that I installed this wiring harness for the towing lights. I have to say the installation went very well and did not require a masters degree to do it. Some simple tools a little planning and a couple hours of your time and you can have this installed and working. It made the hook up a lot easier for my father because it is one plug just like plugging in a trailer. The quality is vary high and so far it has been completely trouble free. It also does not interfere with the proper operation of the lights in the car. If your going to tow a car behind your motor home I highly recommend this harness. This review setup offers a place to add pictures but the harness installs so nice that you can not see it to take a picture of it. So just imagine the wire comfortably installed along with the original wires in your car. Also along with all the other good stuff I mentioned they also have a video you can watch that will show you exactly what to do. What more could you ask for. Worth every penny. 494494

Have had the product installed on my 2017 Chevrolet Equinox LT for one year and it has performed flawlessly! Easy item to install with a great video from etrailer.com. It is a quality product that does not have to cut into the OEM wiring harness. It just plugs into the existing connectors. I recommend this wiring harness to connect my RV to my Equinox for dinghy towing. 482329

For 2010-2013 and 2014-2015 Chevy Equinox models, there are a few components you will need to safely flat tow your vehicle. You will need base plates, a tow bar, safety cables, tow bar wiring, a supplemental braking system, a high low adapter, and a few other parts for power and fuses to make sure everything works together properly. I'll walk you through each part with a brief explanation to assist. Let's start with the base plates. I recommend the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plates # RM-523160-5...

It features removeable arms that will give your Equinox more of an OEM look when you are not towing it. To do this you will need a base plate kit, a tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, and a supplemental braking system.
