Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because your vehicle has a combined lighting system - wherein the brake signals and the turn signals are carried on a single wire - a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Tail Light Wiring Kit Installation - 2014 Chevrolet Equinox

Today on our 2014 Chevy Equinox, we'll be installing the Hopkins Custom Tail Light wiring kit for towed vehicles, part number HM56108. To begin our install, we'll open up the rear hatch so that we can gain access to the tail light fasteners. Underneath the plastic clips will be the fasteners, so we'll go and remove them. Set them aside and then remove the two fasteners and secure the tail light. Once we remove the fasteners, we'll pop the tail light free being careful not to break the alignment tabs underneath. Then, we'll go ahead and disconnect the wiring harness from the tail light socket by pressing on the connector lock and removing it. We'll set the tail light aside for reinstall later. Now with the passenger side done, I can move over to the driver side and repeat the same process.

Now with the tail lights out of the way, we can bring in the new wiring harness. Wiring harness will have three legs or ends. One end is going to plug in here to the driver side. The other portion of the T-connector will plug in to the back of the tail light assembly; plugging in line with the manufacturers wiring. Another leg will get routed over to passenger side, repeating the same connection process, and the third one will get run up to the front of the vehicle so that we connect to the tow vehicle. Now to run our wiring, we'll actually feed the driver side up behind the rear bumper fascia between that and the body of the vehicle.

To assist in routing our wire, we're going to use a pull wire which can be a stiff piece of wire. In this case, a piece of air tubing. We'll feed the air tubing in place where we can gain access to it underneath the vehicle. Take the wiring harness to it and then pull it up into position. Once we pull the wire up into position, we'll go ahead and remove the pull wire and connect it to the manufacturers wiring. Next, I move over to the passenger side, put my pull wire into place.

Then, we move underneath the vehicle and route the passenger side wiring harness over to the pull wire. Now, keep in mind when routing your wires stay away from any moving components such as steering or suspension or excessive heat such as the exhaust. Now with our wire over on the passenger side and pulled up behind the tail light assembly, we'll go ahead and remove the pull wire, connect it to the passenger side tail light assembly to start reinstalling. As we work our way from the passenger side back over to the driver side, we'll secure the wiring as necessary with some black zip ties. After we secure the wiring with the zip ties, we'll cut off the excess from the zip tie to clean up our install look. Next, we'll find a suitable spot to mount our converter box. Now with our connections made and wiring secured, we'll go ahead and reinstall the driver side tail light assembly.

Now with both tail light assemblies reinstalled and secured, we'll go ahead and close the rear hatch, move underneath the vehicle, and take our 4-pole flat harness and run it up to the front ultimately to the base plate wiring mount. Keep in mind as we route the wire, we'll secure with zip ties as necessary. Now we've got our wire routed and secured, we'll go ahead and take the white wire with pre-attached ring terminal and ground it directly to the vehicle frame. Now with our ground terminal secured, we'll go ahead and cut the excess from the zip ties to clean up our install look. With that, this will complete the install of the Hopkins Custom Tail Light wiring kit for towed vehicles, part number HM56108, on our 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. .

I installed a tow bar setup on my parents Chevy Equinox about a year ago so they could pull it behind their motor home. With that I installed this wiring harness for the towing lights. I have to say the installation went very well and did not require a masters degree to do it. Some simple tools a little planning and a couple hours of your time and you can have this installed and working. It made the hook up a lot easier for my father because it is one plug just like plugging in a trailer. The quality is vary high and so far it has been completely trouble free. It also does not interfere with the proper operation of the lights in the car. If your going to tow a car behind your motor home I highly recommend this harness. This review setup offers a place to add pictures but the harness installs so nice that you can not see it to take a picture of it. So just imagine the wire comfortably installed along with the original wires in your car. Also along with all the other good stuff I mentioned they also have a video you can watch that will show you exactly what to do. What more could you ask for. Worth every penny. 494494

Have had the product installed on my 2017 Chevrolet Equinox LT for one year and it has performed flawlessly! Easy item to install with a great video from etrailer.com. It is a quality product that does not have to cut into the OEM wiring harness. It just plugs into the existing connectors. I recommend this wiring harness to connect my RV to my Equinox for dinghy towing. 482329

Works great. Easy to install. So much better then having additional lights to carry around and install each time I tow. I just plug in the "Towed" like any other trailer, and it's all done. Would do it again if I got a new "towed." 369444

I love both products. Getting the wire harness was such a good idea. Im happy you had it or I would be using magnetic lights and that would suck. The base plate and tow bar are perfect for towing our GMC. Unfortunately the Blue Ox cover was lost on a drive without the tow vehicle. I think they need to make the straps better to ensure they stay on during no tow driving. That is the only suggestion I have.

This plug and play wiring kit is the only way to go. I've done the individual diode kit before and the small cost-saving is not worth the hassle. All the parts fix perfectly, had no problems with any of the parts, Product is real sturdy and if you don’t know where to look at the bumper you will not see the hide away receiver brackets. • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2016-2017 GMC Terrain or Chevy Equinox
  • We have everything you need to pull your new GMC Terrain or Chevy Equinox behind your RV with all 4 wheels on the ground. To do this you will need a base plate kit, a tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, and a supplemental braking system. These two vehicles are extremely similar so the needed parts will be the same for either option. Starting with the base plates, I recommend the Roadmaster EZ5 Base Plate Kit # RM-523184-5 if the vehicle does not have adaptive cruise control...

  • Can Tow Bar Wiring and Trailer Wiring be Plugged into a 2017 Chevy Equinox at the Same Time
  • You should not have any trouble daisy-chaining a regular trailer wiring harness with a tow bar wiring harness, in this case # HM56108, on your 2017 Chevy Equinox. The way I would install it is to have the tow bar harness installed closest to the tail lights with the trailer wiring harness plugged into the tow bar harness. • Hopkins Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles on 2013 GMC Terrain
  • You are correct that your tail and brake lights are on one circuit. Your vehicle has combined wiring, and all of the wires run to a single socket in the tail light housing. • Your 2010 GMC Terrain would have used the Roadmaster EZ Base Plate Kit # 523163-1 if you have the Roadmaster Sterling All Terrain # RM-576. Since you upgraded to the 2015 Terrain these parts will actually stay the same so you will just need to get another EZ Base Plate Kit # 523163-1. For a complete flat towing setup you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, vehicle tow bar wiring, a supplemental braking system, and possibly a high-low adapter. So far, with the parts listed...

  • Plug In Tow Bar Wiring and Trailer Wiring Harness at the Same Time on a 2017 GMC Terrain
  • You can install trailer wiring harness # 118494 on your 2017 GMC Terrain between the tail lights and the tow bar wiring harness # HM56108 that you already have installed. So basically you will unplug the HM56108 harness, plug in the 118494 connectors to the lights, then plug the connectors from HM56108 to the 118494 and then to the other vehicle connectors that lead to the front of the vehicle.
