Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you hook up for flat towing using this harness, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this harness wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit Installation - 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche

Today on our 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche we're going to be installing the Hopkins custom taillight wiring kit for towed vehicles, part number HM56102. Now we're going to go ahead and start here at the rear of the vehicle. We'll need to go up underneath. Here's what our Hopkins taillight harness looks like. Now we've gone underneath the vehicle here. We're looking for this plug right here.

You can see it runs up behind and goes up behind to the taillight. Now to unplug this connector you'll push in right here on the locking tab and gently pull apart. You'll see how it matches up with our connectors here tied in. Now for the driver side we'll be connecting in the wires that have the blue and red and brown and yellow. This right here is the driver side so we'll go ahead and plug in the matching sides so they match up, the female on the vehicle with the male on our wiring harness. You want to push it in to make sure that it clicks into position.

Go ahead and do the same with the other side. Next we'll need to go ahead and take the other half of the wiring harness. On this half we have a green, a brown, a purple, and an orange, and we'll route this over to the passenger side where we'll connect in just like we did on the driver side. Now we're over here on the passenger side. We'll have to disconnect this connector right here.

Again, we'll go ahead and squeeze in on the locking tab and pull apart. We'll add the t-connection fitting in line. Once our connections are made we'll go ahead and use a few zip ties to help secure the wire, trim off any excess zip tie. Next we're ready to route the 4-flat wiring to the front of the vehicle. Now when routing the wire you want to make sure you stay away from areas that may become hot, have moving parts, or have sharp edges, as all of these could damage the wire. We'll also use a few zip ties along the way to help secure the wire.

Go ahead and wrap the wires with some electrical tape to give them a little more protection. Next we're going to go ahead and take the white wire with the ring terminal on it, that's our ground wire. We're going to attach it to the frame using a self-tapping screw. Next we can go ahead and take any excess wiring. we can bundle it up underneath the hood here, secure it off with a couple zip ties. Once our wire is secure we can go ahead and trim any excess zip tie. Next we're going to go ahead and put the dust cover and the protecting cover onto our 4-flat wiring. Goes like that. We're going to go ahead and install this plastic clamp that holds it in place. We're going to put our right about there. We are going to have to use some different hardware because of our chosen mounting location. It's just the plastic front fascia so we're going to go ahead and switch over to a machine head-style screw with a washer and a lock nut. Now we'll go ahead and hold our bracket up where we want it. Once we have a couple marks we can go ahead and let it down. Then we'll finish drilling out. Then going to take the hardware that we got, slide it through. Now with our hardware tightened down we can go ahead and secure any loose wiring underneath, trim off any excess zip tie. Then we're ready to try out our new 4-pole wiring. Now that we have all the wiring completed we're going to go ahead and use our test box, or you can just use your motorhome or RV to double-check by plugging into it. Now we'll go ahead and turn our running lights or our taillights. As you can see here, those are working fine. Next we'll go to the left blinker. As you can see, that's working fine as well. Now we'll go to the right blinker. That's working as well. Next we'll check the brakes. We'll start with the right side. That's working fine. Now we'll check the left side. That's working as well. Now that we've checked all the lighting functions we're ready to hit the road. That will do it for the installation of the Hopkins custom taillight wiring kit for towed vehicles, part number HM56102, on our 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche. .

Easy instruction to install. Wire and connectors to the light assembly is a little bulky for the tight space but it fits snug. There was ample wire length to run the length of the vehicle with no issues nor any need for efficient routing. The connectors matched exactly the vehicle. Instructioms were excellent.
