Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you hook up for flat towing using this harness, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this harness wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit Installation - 2008 Chevrolet Silverado

Today on our 2008 Chevrolet Silverado we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles, part number HM56101. Here's what our wiring looks like fully installed. It's going to give us a four-pole flat bracket and wiring on the front of our vehicle. That way we can tow it and have all the required lights on the back end. Now, this is a custom kit. It's going to plug directly into your factory harness, so there's no cutting or splicing that you have to do. Now, it also has a convertor box to make sure that the lights on your motor home are going to match up with the ones on your vehicle.

Now, it's also weather protected and the diodes are going to be housed in this box right here, and it's going to prevent any kind of surge on our towed vehicle. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's show you how we get it installed. To begin our installation, we're going to need to find the factory harness. Now, if we come to the very back of the vehicle and come here on the driver's side, we're going to see that we have several plugs. Now, we're going to want to come to the blue plug or the one that's going to be farthest to the driver's side. Now if we reach up we can push in on the tab and it will release the plug, and we can unplug it.

Now we want to make sure there's no dirt, debris, or any corrosion buildup in either end of the plug or in the socket. Now if we look at our Hopkins harness, we're going to notice that we're going to have the same kind of plugs and we're actually going to plug this in to our factory harness and then jump it over to the socket. Before I plug it in, I'm going to put a little bit of dielectric grease, which is in the kit, and it's going to help prevent any buildup of moisture and corrosion. I'm going to put it on each one of my connectors, and then I'll plug in the corresponding plugs. Now on the other end of our harness we're going to have a four-pole flat along with a ground wire with a ring terminal already attached. Now, we're going to need to run this wire all the way to the front of the vehicle, and everybody's going to route it a little bit different, so let me get this done and I'll show you how I did it.

I just ran my wire along the frame here, zip tying it to some existing wiring, went over my fuel tank, followed it down, came out right here, and continued to follow the frame until I got to right here, and then I went to the outside of the frame and then went into the engine compartment so I wouldn't have to worry about all of my moving components down here, and went over my shock tower here, again zip tying it to some existing wiring. Then I dropped it back down underneath my skid plate. I zip tied it to the cross tube right here on my skid plate, ran it over and had it come down right here. Now on the end of our four-pole, as I mentioned before, we're going to have to find a grounding spot for our ring terminal here. Now, they do provide us with a self-tapping screw, and I'm just going to take my ground wire and I'm going to ground it directly into the frame. Now we just need to mount our four-pole.

Now, they do provide us with a bracket to mount it, and if we open it up and we just take our four-pole flat, we can rest it in the bracket and close it, and now on the bottom you'll see that there's a couple holes. Now, they provided us a couple self-tapping screws, and we just take our screws and we can mount it pretty much anywhere we need to and anywhere fit that we can access our wiring. Now that we do have everything installed, the next step is going to be testing it. I'll go ahead and hook up my tester and we can make sure everything's working properly. Here's the tail lights. Seems to be working okay. Now, the right turn signal. That one's working. Now the left turn signal. Looks like everything's working and we're ready to hit the road. That'll finish up our look at the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles, part number HM56101 on our 2008 Chevrolet Silverado.

I bought this wiring kit about a year ago. It worked great on my first trip towing my 2013 Chevy Silverado to Glacier National Park from KC and back. When I tried using it again about 6 months later it didn't work. I tried to unplug it to test the circuit and the tabs that keep it fastened together broke off. I gave up on it. 663274

Very good product. Only difficulty was in ordering. Not seeing, on line, the product I wanted prompted me to make a phone call. In which I was sent a splice harness when asked for a plug and play harness. This caused me to return it at my own expense. Bottom line,,,,make sure you know "Exactly" the harness you are needing to avoid exchanges as they come at your expense. 562784

Chevrolet Avalanche

This kit is soooo much easier than having to splice in all the various components to get the same result. It is literally plug-and-play. The relay went in pretty smooth too, only problem was finding the wires under a very crowded dash in my Chevy Avalanche. By the way, the white wire from the brake switch plug is the one you need. 188677

GMC Yukon

Wow, what a great company to deal with! Am in the process of making my GMC Yukon a tow dingy and called to order the parts. Got to etrailer in my search and it ended there. These people KNOW their trailers and equipment, not only did I get everything I wanted for the best price on the net, but in two instances staff recommended other ways to do the same job that saved me about $309.00. There is one sales rep there, Katie D. who is on the top of her job, an immense help ordering, also pointing out where I can get additional help thru video that etrailer has. Just a great company to deal with. 153036

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2004 GMC Sierra 1500
  • In order to flat tow your 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 behind your RV, you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, a lighting solution, and a supplemental braking system. I also recommend checking your owner's manual for the Sierra for any specific guidelines or restrictions when it comes to towing the truck with all four wheels on the ground. Starting with the base plates, if your Sierra 1500 is the LD model, I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1682. If you have the HD model,...

  • How to Keep Blue Ox Patriot II from Draining Battery in 2008 GMC Sierra 1500
  • Since the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit # HM56101 has built-in diodes you will not get any feedback through the wiring. No additional wiring or kit is required to keep that from happening. Depending on how far you are traveling and how much braking you are doing, it could be possible that the Blue Ox Patriot II # BRK2016 would drain your battery, especially if the ignition key has to be left in the on position. To help eliminate the possibility of your battery becoming drained...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 4WD
  • Flat towing safely and legally requires a few components, including the tow bar, safety cables, a wiring/lighting kit, a braking system and base plates on the towed vehicle. Sometimes a wiring extension and high/low hitch adapter are needed too. The hitch adapter is required to keep the tow bar near level when it is connected; your large tires and lift may well require one of these. Please refer to the linked help articles on flat towing and hitch adapters. You'll also want to check your...

For safety cables you can use # RM-643. The coiled design helps keep the cables off of the ground. In order to get the correct fit the 2001 GMC Sierra you have to measure from the lower-most threaded hole on the side of the frame to the center of the elongated hole on the bottom of the frame. I have attached a diagram for your reference. If that measurement is 1-1/4 inches then you need Roadmaster Base Plate part # 131-17. If the measurement is 3 inches then...
