Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you hook up for flat towing using this harness, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this harness wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring - Plugs into Vehicle Wiring - HM56008 Review

Today we're going to review part number HM56008. This is the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles. This is a custom fit part number. It is designed to fit the Ford Focus. It'll work on either the automatic or the manual models starting in 2012. This kit will let you wire your vehicle to accept your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights for flat towing.

Basically this will wire your towed car as a combined system so that the brake and turn signals travel along the same wire, and it'll provide this 4-way flat plug at the front of your towed vehicle to connect to your motor home. This part will include everything shown here. It includes the wiring harness, the mounting bracket for the 4-way and the mounting hardware, a grounding screw for grounding the white wire, some cable ties to take up any slack in this wiring, and a package of Dielectric grease to put on your 4-way when you go to connect it to your RV. This does plug in quickly and easily. There's no cutting or splicing of wire. Basically these connection points right here will connect to the back of your vehicle's tail lights.

This will prevent electrical feedback to safeguard your towed cars electrical system. This box right here, this converter box, is a weatherproof box which will keep the built-in diodes protected. This won't interfere with your electrical system when the towed car is not hooked up to an RV. Again, it is a custom design for your specific vehicle. Two other things I do want to mention, the extension loop for connecting the towed car to your RV is sold separately.

We sell it on our website. It's part number HM48235. If you are using a supplemental braking system your vehicle might require a brake light relay which is part RM88400 which we also sell separately. Basically when you go to install this what you'll do is go to the back of your vehicle, and what you'll do is disconnect the connectors on your tail lights and then this set of connectors that has the yellow wire in it would go to your driver's side. This will connect in-line to your connectors behind your tail lights. This longer set of wires that includes the green wire, this is for the passenger's side.

You'll run this length of wire over to your passenger's side, connect these connectors to behind the passenger tail lights, and then you'll run this cord all the way up to the front, you'll have your 4-way right here, and it has the dust cap included that you'll put over it when you're not using it to protect it, to the front and then the last connection you'll need is this white wire needs to be grounded. You can use an existing screw to ground it for a good ground or you can use this grounding screw; drill a hole and make a good, clean ground. The cable ties would be used to take up any extra length of wire. This mounting bracket, this is a nice bracket, you can use it to put your 4-way in. Let me just show you. You drop your 4-way in just like that. Then what you can do is close the mounting bracket around it. Turn it the correct way. There you go. Then just like that. What you'll do is use these two mounting screws and you can put this to the front of your vehicle and then you can still use your dust cap to go over just like that. That should do it for the review of part number HM56008, the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles. .

I chose not to follow the etrailer video installation for this because I did not want to cut holes in the factory grommets. There is plenty of room to run the wires under the rear bumper cover. Hardest part is running the 4 pole connector back to the front of the vehicle. The Focus is very low and without a lift, its a challenge. It is also nearly impossible to run the 4 pole wires to the middle of the vehicle with the front bumper cover on after the tow bar has been installed. I tried for about 30 minutes before giving up and taking the front bumper cover off again. 565480

Do you have a question about this Tow Bar Wiring?

  • Base Plate Recommendation For a 2015 Ford Focus SE Hatchback
  • Good news, I can help you pick out the right base plate kit for your 2015 Ford Focus. Staying in the Roadmaster family since you have a Falcon # RM-520, the Roadmaster # RM-524443-5 and the Roadmaster # RM-524443-4 are both great fits for your 2015 Ford Focus SE Hatchback. Both will be compatible with your tow bar, just depends on how you would like the front of the vehicle to look after the install. The difference of the EZ4 and EZ5 is the mounting arms. The EZ5 has the arms that...

  • What Items Are Needed to Flat Tow a 2014 Ford Focus ST Behind a Motorhome
  • Flat towing a vehicle behind a motor home requires a number of components: a tow bar, safety cables, a wiring/lighting kit, and base plates and a supplementary braking system for the towed car. Often a wiring extension between the MH and car and a high/low hitch adapter are also needed. The linked article covers each of these in detail and explains the options available. I recommend using one brand of tow bar and base plate since this will avoid the added cost and complexity of using...

  • Tow Bar Lighting Recommendation for a 2016 Ford Focus
  • For tow bar lighting for your 2016 Ford Focus hatchback you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillight assemblies of the towed vehicle. This comes with a round 6-way connector that you will install on the front of your towed vehicle and enough coiled wire to go from there to the RV. Since this is a hardwire kit it would not have any fitment...

  • Plug and Play Tow Bar Wiring Harness for a 2012 Ford Focus SE Hatchback
  • Trailer wiring harness # 118549 gets the signals it needs through the tail light wiring on your 2012 Ford Focus hatchback. The power for the trailer lights comes from the connection to the vehicle battery. This wiring harness is if the Focus is towing a trailer and will not work in reverse (towing the Focus behind a motor home). For a similar harness that is set up to work as tow bar wiring and that plugs inline with the tail light wiring use # HM56008. The harness gets its power from...

  • To provide a permanent lighting connector on the front of your 2012 Ford Focus and a coiled wiring extension for flat towing I recommend the Blue Ox 7-Wire to 6-Wire, Coiled Electrical Cord # BX88206. This extension includes a 6-Pin socket connector that will mount to the Blue Ox # BX2633 base plate that you referenced, and the connector is black to help remain inconspicuous on the front of your Focus. • Coiled Tow Bar Wiring Extension to Go from a 7-Way to a 4-Way Flat
  • Yes, the tow bar wiring harness # HM56008 will work as a combined system, with the brake lights and turn signals on the same circuits. You could use ta 7-Way to 4-Way adapter either directly in the 7-Way on the RV or at the end of a coiled extension. But I was able to find a nice long coiled cable to go from a 7-Way to a 4-Way, # 787196.

  • Flat Towing Wiring Connections for 2014 Ford Focus with Automatic Transmission
  • The white ground wire on a flat-towing harness like # HM56007 or # HM56008 will attach to the towed vehicle's frame or battery negative terminal. This will not have any effect on your Focus' transmission nor will it cause any issues with battery drain. When connected in this manner the ground will still eventually route back to the RV but you do not have to wire it as you describe. Do be sure to follow all of the steps outlined in your Focus owner's manuals for making the car ready for...

  • Will the Hopkins Taillight Wiring Kit for Flat Towing Work on a Vehicle with Disconnected Battery
  • The Hopkins Taillight Wiring Kit for Flat Towing part # HM56008 that you referenced and watched the install video for does not draw power from the vehicle it is installed on so the battery being disconnected on your vehicle would not be an issue at all. All of the power it draws comes from the tow vehicle.

  • Tow Bar Wiring that Plugs into Tail Light Wiring on a 2014 Ford Focus
  • If your 2014 Ford Focus ST is the 5-door model then you could use Hopkins tow bar wiring harness # HM56008. It also looks like the battery has to be disconnected on your Focus to flat tow it. Consult the owners manual to confirm. To keep a maintenance charge on the battery I recommend using a harness such as # BX88206 with the tow bar wiring you will be using so that you can run a wire from the connector at the front of the truck to the vehicle battery.
