Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring - Bypasses Vehicle Wiring - RM-155 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number RM-155. This is the road master taillight wiring kit with the included sockets and bulbs. This kit is going to let you use your toed vehicles, brake, running and signal lights without taping into the vehicle wiring. Please note, to get this installed your toed vehicle must have enough room inside the tail light lens housing for an extra bulb and socket assembly. The size hold that you're going to need in order to get the socket mounted in the taillight housing is going to be one inch in diameter. You can use a one inch hole saw or a rotary cutting tool to make that hole. When you're installing this your wiring is going to be routed beneath the vehicle.

It's going to come with the protective wire loom, you're going to get three feet of this loom to protect certain areas of the wiring from sharp edges. All you have to do is simply cut the length that you need and fit if over your wires to protect the wiring from those sharp areas. This unit does maintain the manufacturers warranty on toed vehicles by avoiding any involvement, whether it's a logical system, the overall measurement of the bold measuring from the very base to here at the end of the lens, that's going to give us a measurement of about two in one quarter of an inch. Measuring from the flanks to the top of the bulb is going to be about two inches and the bulb type that this system uses 1157. It's going to include all the necessary wiring. You're going to get a harness right here, this is going to be 30 feet long, it's got the dust caps on the connectors and this is going to be your female connectors on both sides.

You're going to get the 30 feet long wiring. You're also going to get the six foot long wiring, again wiring connectors. They're going to be your main lenses, it's going to be the hardest it runs in between the back of the RV and the toed vehicle. You're going to get three feet of half inch split loom, you're going to get the two lights and the sockets, you're going to have about eight inches of wiring coming out the back of the sockets, you're going to get all necessary connectors. You're going to get the blue connectors for single wire connections, these are your butt connectors. You're going to get yellow butt connectors for two wire connections and you're going to get a small ring terminal to make your ground connection.

You're going to get zip ties to tidy up any wires underneath the vehicle and you're going to get the included instructions. These are going to walk you through the installation process step by step. The kit is made in the USA. Now when it comes to the installation you will need to gain access to the back of both taillight assemblies. You're going to need to find a suitable location to mount the bulb and socket inside the tail light housings. The bulb socket must be installed underneath red lenses and it must at least be a quarter inch clear between the bulbs and the lenses.

You'll need to drill out that one end circular hole through the back of the taillight housings. Right here around the flange it's going to have spring loaded taps that encircle the socket, you'll need to bend those outward slightly, snap the bulb into the hole that you just drilled and that's going to provide the nice tight fit that we need to make sure these don't vibrate loose and come out of the taillight housing. Then you're going to need to attach one end of the 30 foot harness at the front of the vehicle for connecting the URV, at the other end of the 30 foot harness you can cut off the connector. This is going to be the end that's going to run to the back of the vehicle, that's the taillight assemblies for connecting the end of the bulb and socket wiring. Again you're going to route the wiring beneath the vehicle and you can use the included zip tires just to straight the wires up and out of the way. Then you would use the included butt connectors to attach the electrical harness to the taillights, you will need to reinstall everything, make your ground connection and clean up your installation and then you're going to be ready to connect your six foot wiring harness between the plug at the front end of the vehicle and the back of your URV. Again, instructions are included, very detailed, they're going to walk you through the entire installation process step by step. That's going to do it for our review of part number RM-155. This is the road master taillight wiring kit with the bulb and sockets.

This kit really simplifies wiring tail lights on a vehicle that will be towed. No cutting into the vehicle's wiring and adding isolation diodes. Very functional and easy to install. 170597

Found this item was wired with the brake lights for the brown wires and turn/running lights for colored wires and this fact kept me from getting this done very rapidly. Once identified, went together really nicely and actually grounded to frame for higher light output. I upgraded 3 wire into 2 wire converter with "Roadmaster Brite-lite 3 to 2 Wiring Converter" and they are as bright as the lights already in the housing. Except for that wiring issue, it would have been excellent. As to performance after install, great. Customer service was nice from Roadmaster as well. Did receive a call back message from etrailer a couple days later. 86819

And customer service...Well they checked back with me a year later to see if I needed anything. How is that for the best customer service around! A

The overall concept is a great idea. No splicing into the vehicle and makes for a cleaner look instead of magnetic lights or possibly damaging the vehicle's electrical system. Now for the issues. The kit needs to be reworked to add additional footage of wire and to ensure the self tapping screw is included. I followed the video instructions to a tee and had to purchase additional wire adding to my precious time and cost. We see great ideas and then get inconveniences during the install which is unacceptable! With that I had to get additional butt connectors to add the additional wire. The self tapping screw was missing and of course did not realize until I was ready for it. The video instructional needs to add additional alerts for drilling into the taillights- the tolerances are very tight - I drilled into the same exact spot as the video shows but when I inserted the factory bulb it was making contact with the bulb from the kit. You need a more detailed and measured way to the exact spot that has to be drilled. I hope this will not affect the bulbs performance or stability. The idea of "fishing" the lines thru are terrible. You have to remember we are diy's and don't have the fancy pit or lift. We are laying on the ground trying to squeeze underneath with a floor jack. I had to loosen the cover before the fuel tank to get the wires thru. I am not bad mouthing the product, I just want to alert other diy's to have all the parts, extra zip ties to ensure the cleanest look, extra wire and butt connectors before you start. The no splicing wire and own bulbs concept is 5 stars, the kit is 1 star and the instructional video is 2 stars. Unless this gets updated I will not recommend to others. 409953

This product was easy to install but it took some time routing the wiring harness from the front bumper to the rear. Pick up some extra zip ties, you will need several. The lighting system is independent allowing for the use of LED bulbs. Great product. 239278

Great idea. After years of towing with magnetic lights now all I have to do is plug it in, and I'm done. The kit kit comes with more parts and wire than I needed and was simple to install on my 2010 JK. 81930

1999 Mazda Miata

I purchased this wiring kit for use in my 1999 Mazda Miata. I did not want to cut into the OEM wiring harness, even using the diode method to safeguard the system. I felt that the fully separate wiring harness was more to my way of thinking for getting my car ready to tow. I did not follow the included instructions that said to run the flat 4 wiring beneath the car, zip tying it along the way free of the exhaust and moving parts. I ran it through the firewall, beneath the dash, under the center console, and under the carpeting back into the trunk area. I then installed the bulb holders as instructed in my OEM Miata taillight fixtures. I am happy to have all the wiring up and out of the way of potential road hazard damage, as well as the hot and/or moving parts beneath the car. It works perfectly, and I am glad that I purchased this kit, and also that I decided to install it the way I felt best to do so. It took much longer my way, but I'll never have to mess with it again. 221250

2019 Chevrolet Equinox

I ordered a Bulb and Socket kit for my 2019 Chevy Equinox. I’m getting ready to install it this weekend. I am disappointed in a couple of things so far. The kit was clearly a return from another customer. The packaging was cut open and taped closed, and the inside bag of small parts was also cut open and stapled. I don’t know if something was defective. So that is concerning. Also odd is that the online instructions refer to using “the self-tapping screw” for a ground, but it’s not included. Had I known, I could have ordered it with the baseplate and kit, but too late now. Why not include it? The online instructions and video depict and give instructions for wiring the harness to the 6way plug, again, not included. This kit included some rather flimsy flat 4way plugs on the wiring harness. I will need to cut those off and order a 6 way receptacle. Again, had I known ... since shipping is included only with orders of $100, not excited to find I need small extra parts, that I now have to get elsewhere, and quickly. So hopefully the install will go well. I like the videos. 644223

Great product. Installed on a 2006 Jeep unlimited. Ran the wire along passenger side to firewall. Through the firewall, under the carpet to the back passenger side. Drilled a hole through back inside panel and connected to passenger side lights. For connections, we removed the taillights (3 screws). There is a lights metal piece between the two existing bulbs. Removed that and cut a hole for the supplied lights. Plenty of wire was supplied. 2 hours work, saved several hundred dollars, (one shop wanted $800 to wire lights). 447047

  • The Roadmaster Base Plate Kit that fits your 2006 Mini Cooper is a part # 521876-1 but from the picture you sent in it looks like you actually have the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1303 instead. If you are missing the pins then those can be found as part # BX62-3468 on our site (2 will be needed). You may want to make sure that the base plate kit itself doesn't need to be replaced though. The opening there looks a little rough so you may want to try sanding it and applying some Rustoleum....

  • Flat-Tow Wiring Harness and Supplemental Braking System for a 2016 Jeep Cherokee
  • I do have options for you but neither the Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit part # RM-155 or the Blue Ox Tail Light Wiring Kit part # BX88267 will fit your 2016 Jeep Cherokee as there is not enough room inside the tail light housing for the new bulbs. Instead, I recommend the Hopkins Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles part # HM56208 as it is a completely plug and play kit that does not require you to cut any wires or the tail light housing. There won't be any issues using...

  • Parts Needed to Safely Flat Tow 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Behind 2017 Winnebago View Motorhome
  • Flat towing your 2018 Subaru Crosstrek behind your Winnebago View motorhome requires essentially the same items you used for towing your older Honda vehicle. Those basic components for flat towing include a tow bar, such as your existing Blue Ox Alpha # BX7365, base plates and a braking system for the toad, safety cables, a high/low hitch adapter, and a wiring or lighting kit of some type to keep the towed car visible. All are touched on in the linked article on flat towing. At this...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2006 Mini Cooper
  • We do have the parts needed to flat tow a 2006 Mini Cooper, but you will want to start off by checking your owner's manual to make sure that your specific model and engine can be flat towed. If it can, then you will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety cables, vehicle tow bar lighting, supplemental braking system, and most likely a high-low adapter. By base model I assume that you have a Hardtop model. If that is the case then you will want to use the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1303....

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 1997 Jeep Wrangler
  • For your 1997 Jeep Wrangler with an off-road bumper there are a number of parts you'll need which we can make work while remaining economical. The first thing you'll require is the Adapter for Jeep D-Ring Bumper Mounts to Roadmaster Motor Home Mount Tow Bars # RM-035-1 and the best option for a tow bar would be the Falcon 2 # RM-520; you'll also need safety cables # RM-643. For lighting you can use E-Z Mount Tow Light Kit # EZT20B, which hook up to your tow vehicle's 4-way. Should you...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2000 Jeep Wrangler TJ
  • Those are weldnut plates with 14 inches of wire behind them. These are used to provide a nut for a bolt that threads through the base plate kit and then through the frame. The nut plate gets inserted into the frame and gets aligned so that the installation bolt that secures the base plate kit to the frame has something to tighten onto. I attached the installation instructions for this base plate kit to give you more installation info. There are several other components needed to flat...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2008 Jeep Wrangler
  • I have a base plate kit recommendation that will work on your 2008 Jeep Wrangler without aftermarket bumpers winches or guards, but the part # RM-521448-4 is for newer Wranglers so it would not work for you. You would want the Roadmaster Base Plate kit part # RM-521448-4. In addition to the base plates, you will also need a compatible tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking to flat tow your vehicle. The most popular compatible tow bar is the Falcon 2, # RM-520....

  • Parts to Flat Tow 2011 Hyundai Accent
  • The only base plates which are a fit for your 2011 Hyundai Accent are indeed the Blue Ox # BX2323, which will work with your automatic transmission so long as you do not have foglights. You will not need to unplug a fuse on your Accent to tow it, though there are a number of other parts you'll need. For a tow bar I recommend the Blue Ox Alpha # BX7365 which is compatible with the aforementioned Blue Ox base plates and even comes with safety chains. You are also going to need wiring...

  • Bulb and Socket Kit for Flat Towing that Uses LED Bulbs

  • Powering the Tail Lights on a 2012 Fiat 500 to Flat Tow Behind a Motor Home
  • The first thing you are going to want to do is consult the vehicle owners manual to make sure that you can flat tow your Fiat or if there are any additional parts needed or recommendations from the manufacturer. You will need to use a different wiring configuration. Like you said, the wiring harness # 118546 is if the Fiat is towing something. It cannot be adapted to operate the vehicle lights while it is being flat towed. I recommend the bulb and socket kit # RM-155 because you will...

  • Items Needed for Flat Towing 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Behind Motor Home
  • Flat towing a vehicle requires a number of components, including base plates for the dinghy, safety cables, a tow bar, and a lighting kit along with the braking system you have. The linked article covers each of these various items. For base plates I suggest the Blue Ox Kit # BX1121 (which fits all versions except the SRT-8) and which includes the required safety cables. A compatible tow bar for use with these base plates is the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar # BX7365. For lighting/wiring...

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sahara
  • Yes, the Demco Commander tow bar # DM9511010 will work to flat tow your 1999 Jeep Wrangler. You need several other items to complete your towing setup though. The first thing you will need is a base plate kit. If you have a double tube bumper you want the part # DM9517046, if you have a U-channel bumper you would want part # DM9519045. Check out the pictures I attached to see the differences between the two bumper styles. For lighting you can use the bulb and socket kit, # RM-155, and...

  • I spoke to my contact at Roadmaster and we came up with a solution for you. It will require a little bit of fabrication but it should work. What you will need first is the Roadmaster MS Base Plate Bracket part # 1437-3. You will need to remove the brackets you have bolted to your bumper and then have these brackets welded in their place by a qualified welder.
