Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring - HM55999

Connect your towed car's lighting system to your RV to activate the signal lights required for towing. This universal harness splices into your existing wiring. Operates as combined lighting system.

    • Wires towed car as combined system so that brake and turn signals travel along same wire
    • Provides 4-way flat plug at front of towed car to connect to motor home
  • Splices into tail light wiring harness quickly and easily with included quick-splice connectors
  • Prevents electrical feedback to safeguard towed car's electrical system
    • Weatherproof box keeps built-in diodes protected
  • Won't interfere with electrical system when towed car is not hooked up to RV
  • Includes wiring harness and installation hardware
    • Extension loop for connecting towed car to RV is sold separately
    • Brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if used with supplemental braking system
  • 90-Day warranty

Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

This towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins connects to your vehicle's existing wiring quickly and easily. Simply splice into your factory tail light wiring to connect the harness with the included quick-splice connectors.

After connecting the wiring harness, use a mounting bracket (sold separately) to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Separate vs. Combined Lighting Systems

Some automobiles operate on a 3-wire system, wherein the brake signal and the turn signals travel along different wires to illuminate different lights. (Typically, these vehicles have amber turn signals.) This is referred to as a "separate lighting system." When you hook up for flat towing using the Hopkins harness, your towed car's lighting system will operate in a combined fashion regardless of whether it typically has combined or separate lighting. This means that the brake and turn signals sent by your RV to your towed car will be carried on a single wire. As a result, your car's brake lights will do the flashing for the turn signals. Your vehicle will still function as designed when not hooked up to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because this harness wires your vehicle as a combined system, a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring HM55999 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number HM55999. This is the Hopkins Universal Tail Light Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles. This is going to be a universal fit system so it will fit many different vehicles. Ultimately, this system's going to let you wire your vehicle to accept your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights for flat towing. It's actually going to wire the towed car as a combined system so that the brake and turn signals travel along the same wire. It's going to provide the four-way flat plug at the front of the towed vehicle to connect to the motor home and it's going to easily splice into the tail light wiring harness on the towed vehicle quickly and easily with all the included quick splice connectors. These quick slice connectors simply just combine two wires very quickly and effectively, that way it extends the function so you can take two wires, put them in the connectors, kind of buckle it down, and then it's going to extend that function by connecting the two wires together.

All those are included. You're going to have your converter right here. This is going to be your diode converter, this is going to prevent electrical feedback to safeguard the towed vehicle's electrical system. It's a weather-proof box that's going to keep the built-in diodes protected. Another neat feature about this system, once it's fully installed you don't have to worry about it interfering with your electrical system when the towed car is not hooked up to your RV. It's going to include the wiring harness and your quick slice connectors.

Very simple installation. You'll need to gain access to the tail light assemblies. The converter is going to to install in the driver side of the vehicle. It's going to to have kind of two sets of wires. You're going to have yellow, brown, blue, and red.

Those are all going to be short wires so those are going to go to the driver side. Then you're going to have this bundle wire that's going to have purple, orange, green, and brown. That's going to run over to the passenger side of the vehicle. It's going to come with detailed instructions that are going to show you which wires connect to which functions on your vehicle. Once you have all those connected using the quick splice connector, then here on this side of the converter we're going to have our wiring harness connected to the four-way flat connector. This is going to route all the way up to the front of the vehicle, in the middle of the vehicle towards the front grill area, and you're going to secure it to the front of the vehicle.

You're also going to need to find a suitable grounding location, nice clean metal surface to make your ground connection using a self-tapping screw. Once you have that done, you'll need to secure any excess wires or take up any slack that you may have in your wiring with some zip ties, tidy up your installation. Then you're going to be ready to make your connections and get on the road. That's going to do it for our look at part number HM55999.

Installed into 2008 Smart Car. Installed entirely within the cabin.(no wires below the chassis) Works great no issues. Other products do not have diode module integrated so conveniently. Just needed a coat hanger to snake wires. 326131

the product is good, the instructions are easy to follow, the one thing that i didn't like is the fact that i had to add wire to the passenger side pig tail. when i watched the demo video, they installed this on a Honda CRV and had to add wire to the passenger side as well. i figured since i was putting this on a chevy tracker which is narrower, i wouldn't have an issue but it seems the wires had been shortened for the narrower vehicle. i guess my input would be to make those wires longer so that i don't have to run to the parts store to buy extra wire and then cause another failure point in the wire bundle. 116538

The product worked great on my 2013 Chrysler 200 Convert. I did not use the connectors with the kit as I have not had good luck with these before. The wires on the car are very thin and those snap on connectors do not always make good contact. Also the wire leading to the tow vehicle is only three wire with a short ground wire. I replaced this with a four wire kit, as I do not leave the four wire line on the car when not being towed. I plug into the four wire connector in the trunk and ground it in the trunk and then run the four wires up to the tow vehicle. Works fine and easy hook up. 433769

etrailer has great service Mike S extension 357 was a great help on several products - but this product is a bust -- The cheap connectors provided failed in 4 of the 8 connections, We had to use a volt meter to determine which ones where not making contact and then solder the connections. Also the yellow wire to the driver side brake light coming out of the unit was completly dead, but we where able to make it work by tapping into the green wire that went to the passenger side brake light. For $79 or even more there has to be something better -- so much for made in Mexico. 148156

Hopkins wiring kit is the right fit for 2014 Jeep Cherokee. E-trailer experts first sent the Roadmaster kit which had to be returned as it would not work on this vehicle. The return and waiting for the credit on the credit card took longer than expected over three weeks. The Roadmaster base plates are good and the total installation time was 6 hours. They are all most invisible on the Jeep. 160838

To complete your towing system, you'll need safety cables like # RM-643, a wiring harness like part # HM55999, a wiring umbilical like part # BX88254 and a supplemental braking system like the Blue Ox Patriot II, part # BRK2016. Because your truck can be pretty heavy depending on how it is equipped, I recommend the Avail, # BX7420. It is rated for 10,000 pounds and also comes with...

  • Base Plates and Equipment Needed to Flat Tow Honda Element 2003 EX Behind Motorhome
  • I looked up an online copy of your owner's manual and confirmed that your vehicle can indeed be flat towed, at speeds up to but not exceeding 65mph. Honda lists very specific steps that must be taken before manual or automatic transmission equipped vehicles are flat towed. This information begins on page 198 of the manual. For your vehicle, I like the Blue Ox base plates a bit better. After looking at the installation instructions, I'd recommend the Blue Ox baseplate # BX2232 because...
