Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring - Bypasses Vehicle Wiring - RM-155 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number RM-155. This is the road master taillight wiring kit with the included sockets and bulbs. This kit is going to let you use your toed vehicles, brake, running and signal lights without taping into the vehicle wiring. Please note, to get this installed your toed vehicle must have enough room inside the tail light lens housing for an extra bulb and socket assembly. The size hold that you're going to need in order to get the socket mounted in the taillight housing is going to be one inch in diameter. You can use a one inch hole saw or a rotary cutting tool to make that hole. When you're installing this your wiring is going to be routed beneath the vehicle.

It's going to come with the protective wire loom, you're going to get three feet of this loom to protect certain areas of the wiring from sharp edges. All you have to do is simply cut the length that you need and fit if over your wires to protect the wiring from those sharp areas. This unit does maintain the manufacturers warranty on toed vehicles by avoiding any involvement, whether it's a logical system, the overall measurement of the bold measuring from the very base to here at the end of the lens, that's going to give us a measurement of about two in one quarter of an inch. Measuring from the flanks to the top of the bulb is going to be about two inches and the bulb type that this system uses 1157. It's going to include all the necessary wiring. You're going to get a harness right here, this is going to be 30 feet long, it's got the dust caps on the connectors and this is going to be your female connectors on both sides.

You're going to get the 30 feet long wiring. You're also going to get the six foot long wiring, again wiring connectors. They're going to be your main lenses, it's going to be the hardest it runs in between the back of the RV and the toed vehicle. You're going to get three feet of half inch split loom, you're going to get the two lights and the sockets, you're going to have about eight inches of wiring coming out the back of the sockets, you're going to get all necessary connectors. You're going to get the blue connectors for single wire connections, these are your butt connectors. You're going to get yellow butt connectors for two wire connections and you're going to get a small ring terminal to make your ground connection.

You're going to get zip ties to tidy up any wires underneath the vehicle and you're going to get the included instructions. These are going to walk you through the installation process step by step. The kit is made in the USA. Now when it comes to the installation you will need to gain access to the back of both taillight assemblies. You're going to need to find a suitable location to mount the bulb and socket inside the tail light housings. The bulb socket must be installed underneath red lenses and it must at least be a quarter inch clear between the bulbs and the lenses.

You'll need to drill out that one end circular hole through the back of the taillight housings. Right here around the flange it's going to have spring loaded taps that encircle the socket, you'll need to bend those outward slightly, snap the bulb into the hole that you just drilled and that's going to provide the nice tight fit that we need to make sure these don't vibrate loose and come out of the taillight housing. Then you're going to need to attach one end of the 30 foot harness at the front of the vehicle for connecting the URV, at the other end of the 30 foot harness you can cut off the connector. This is going to be the end that's going to run to the back of the vehicle, that's the taillight assemblies for connecting the end of the bulb and socket wiring. Again you're going to route the wiring beneath the vehicle and you can use the included zip tires just to straight the wires up and out of the way. Then you would use the included butt connectors to attach the electrical harness to the taillights, you will need to reinstall everything, make your ground connection and clean up your installation and then you're going to be ready to connect your six foot wiring harness between the plug at the front end of the vehicle and the back of your URV. Again, instructions are included, very detailed, they're going to walk you through the entire installation process step by step. That's going to do it for our review of part number RM-155. This is the road master taillight wiring kit with the bulb and sockets.

Yet another good product/service provided by etrailer.com. Even if they are a bit more on their price I generally use etrailer.com because of their excellent service. Top notch company. This Wiring Kit went in just as advertised. Of course it took me longer than I expected but that is normal for me. I work slow but my result is always a first class install! :-) 559749

This product was easy to install but it took some time routing the wiring harness from the front bumper to the rear. Pick up some extra zip ties, you will need several. The lighting system is independent allowing for the use of LED bulbs. Great product. 239278

2019 Chevrolet Equinox

I ordered a Bulb and Socket kit for my 2019 Chevy Equinox. I’m getting ready to install it this weekend. I am disappointed in a couple of things so far. The kit was clearly a return from another customer. The packaging was cut open and taped closed, and the inside bag of small parts was also cut open and stapled. I don’t know if something was defective. So that is concerning. Also odd is that the online instructions refer to using “the self-tapping screw” for a ground, but it’s not included. Had I known, I could have ordered it with the baseplate and kit, but too late now. Why not include it? The online instructions and video depict and give instructions for wiring the harness to the 6way plug, again, not included. This kit included some rather flimsy flat 4way plugs on the wiring harness. I will need to cut those off and order a 6 way receptacle. Again, had I known ... since shipping is included only with orders of $100, not excited to find I need small extra parts, that I now have to get elsewhere, and quickly. So hopefully the install will go well. I like the videos. 644223

Found this item was wired with the brake lights for the brown wires and turn/running lights for colored wires and this fact kept me from getting this done very rapidly. Once identified, went together really nicely and actually grounded to frame for higher light output. I upgraded 3 wire into 2 wire converter with "Roadmaster Brite-lite 3 to 2 Wiring Converter" and they are as bright as the lights already in the housing. Except for that wiring issue, it would have been excellent. As to performance after install, great. Customer service was nice from Roadmaster as well. Did receive a call back message from etrailer a couple days later. 86819

Continues to work as it should! Very pleased with end product after installation by myself and continue to be happy every time I hook up since! Nice item! And customer service...Well they checked back with me a year later to see if I needed anything. How is that for the best customer service around! A

Its exactly as described, and actually provides the right connections and misc parts. Would ask that the black wire loom be as long as the extension, since you will mainly need that much extension to reach from the car to the tow vehicle, but only a slight knock. One watch out, the bulbs were hard to fit in my light (2010 Mini, so a small light housing). I may have to go back in with a mini LED bulb or something that is lower heat and smaller. Going to check it after the next tow. 806207

I really didn't want to install a separate bulb kit but our Equinox light was not compatible with our motor home. I was also installing a trailer lighting harness for the Equinox at the same time and doing them together made a lot of sense. I found this kit to be easy to manage and that drilling into the rear light housings not nearly as difficult as I had imagined. I would share a picture of the result but fortunately there is nothing to see - everything fit right into the Equinox's rear lamp structure. I compared the original lights with those from the kit driven by the RV and found them to be a great match. I upgraded the kit bulbs to LEDs for greater longevity. 797428

  • Replacing Incandescent with LED Bulbs in Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring On 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee
You can switch over to LED lights by using the Roadmaster LED Bulbs # RM-152-2 . This will allow you to use the existing wires that you've already run with the Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit # RM-155 and add LED tail lights in the place of the incandescent bulbs.

The bulb and socket kit # RM-155 is not a fit for the 2014 or 2015 Jeep Wrangler so you would not want to use it. Since you do not want to splice into the vehicle wiring I recommend using Hopkins kit # HM56200. It just plugs in line with the vehicle tail light wiring. No drilling, cutting, or splicing required to the vehicle wiring. I have linked a video showing installation for you. The only other way to bypass the vehicle completely is to use a magnetic kit such as # C-ATL20A.

As with the installation of lights on a trailer, the lights must be grounded, either through the mounting hardware which is the case for many lights.
