Video Transcript for Roadmaster Tow Bar Wiring Kit Installation - 2008 Dodge Ram

Today on our 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup well be installing the Roadmaster Universal Power Diode Wiring Kit, part number rm-154. To begin our install well start at the front of the vehicle where well take a 4-pole connector and secure it to the baseplate. To secure it to the baseplate well use some black zip ties. Then as we route the wiring to the back of the vehicle, well use the black zip ties to secure it as necessary. Keep in mind when routing your wires youll want to stay away from moving components such as steering or suspension, or excessive heat such as the exhaust. With this application well also be able to route the wire into the frame channel to the back of the vehicle where it will assist in helping protect the wire.

To help us get the wire in place through the frame channel, well use a pull wire, or in this case a piece of air tubing. Well feed it through the frame channel, through the access hole here, and out the end of the frame, and then attach our 4-pole wire to the pull wire using some black electrical tape. Now we can go ahead and pull it out the end of the frame. Next were going to go ahead and cut off the other end of our 4-pole wire as it will not be necessary. Then well take the white wire and strip it off the 4-pole wire.

Now well go ahead and cut to length, strip it back, and secure our ring terminal. Well then take a self-tapping screw and secure the ground wire to the vehicle frame. Next, well go ahead and pull off the green wire from the yellow and brown wire. With the green wires pulled back, well take the yellow and brown wire and feed it up behind the drivers side taillight assembly. Next well go ahead and remove the drivers side taillight assembly by removing the two torx bit fasteners.

Then well carefully pull out on the taillight assembly being careful not to break the alignment tab underneath. It may be necessary to use a flat-bladed screwdriver or a plastic trim panel tool to separate the alignment tabs and the plastic fasteners underneath. Well repeat this for the passenger side taillight. Next well need to locate the running, turn, and brake signal circuits here for the drivers side. Note this is a combined system where all three signals will use the same bulb.

Well go ahead and connect them. To gain access to the wiring well go ahead and remove some of the wire loom and black electrical tape. Using a test light well see that the running light circuit is the manufacturers white wire with the yellow tracer, and our turn and brake signal circuit will be a white wire with a green tracer. Now with our taillight removed well go ahead and pull the wiring up that we fed through earlier and cut off any excess. Then well pull apart the wires and strip them back. Next well take the excess brown wire and strip it back as well and route it to the end and back down the taillight assembly. This will be eventually routed to the passenger side along with the green wire. Next well need to install the diodes in line with the manufacturers wiring as well as connect our 4-pole harness to the diode. This will use the diode with the yellow push pin connector from the in side of the diode. Well remove it and crimp it into our two brown wires from the 4-pole. At this time well cut our manufacturers running light wire and strip it back on both ends. Now we can take the blue push pin connector from the diode and crimp them down. Then we can go ahead and connect the diode. The out arrow will point to the socket side of the manufacturers wiring, and the other side will then make our diode plug in line with our manufacturers wiring. Next well add the yellow connector hooking in our new 4-pole harness. Now well go ahead and repeat the same process with our turn signal circuit here on the drivers side. Well cut the manufacturers wire in half and strip back both ends. Well secure our yellow wire and the manufacturers wiring with the blue push pin fasteners from the diode. Again, the out arrow will point towards the taillight socket. Now with all our connections made here on the drivers side, Im going to go ahead and use some black electrical tape to wrap up the wires, clean up our install look, and help keep out any dust, dirt, debris, or moisture. Next well take the brown wire that we just fed back underneath the vehicle, pick up the green wire that we left from our 4-pole harness, route them over to the passenger side and up behind the passenger side taillight assembly. Here we can go ahead and secure them with a zip tie, and then make the connections just as we did on the drivers side. Here on the passenger side, our running circuit is a white wire with a gray tracer, and the turn signal and braking circuit will be a white wire with a yellow tracer. Well go ahead and make our connectors to the diode for that. Now we can move to the right turn signal and repeat the same process. Once again, once we make our connections well go ahead and wrap it up with some black electrical tape. Now we can go ahead and reinstall the taillight assemblies. Now with everything reinstalled, this will complete the installation of the Roadmaster Universal Power Diode Wiring Kit, part number rm-154 on our 2008 Dodge Ram Pickup.

Work as discribed. The first time for me to use the universal kit and was a little worried about the outcome but I followed the instructions and it works great. The hardest part was routing the wire around the front end area. Wire was just enough, I recommend starting at the front end and route the wire on the passenger side. This is the side of the motorhomes 7 pin plug. Remember to stay away from the exhaust (on most trucks as mine is a Chevy 1500). Product was received within 3 days of purchase which works for me. I give Etrailer 2 thumps up for great service once again. 511182

This isn't the first time I've installed a wiring harness and this one was a nice one (I thought). But I am having problems with the right light (both brake and running light). I've tried calling and talking to your customer support with no answer! I've found if I turn on my lights, at least the running lights all work (but not the brake light or turn signal). I'm thinking it's a grounding problem, but haven't been able to fix it so may have to try someone else's wiring harness. 608773

I used this for a Jeep Wrangler, probably one of the easier applications. etrailer cautions us to ensure the ground is proper, and I can confirm this. While I found the proper wires using voltage, the gound I used had too much resistance to allow for proper functioning. It took several hours to track it down. But no doubt, when the electical system gives what appears to be impossible data, it is always the ground. I hooked to the proper ground and it works like a charm. I do recommend using heat shrink tubing on the spade connectors. Also I mounted the four flat connector to the bumper. Curt brackets do not fit the connectors in this package without serious modifications. 192669

I installed the wiring harness yesterday and it took about 4 hours. Thats actually 4 hours of work, in reality it was more like 6 hours but most of the time was trying to figure out how to route the wiring which is not the fault of the harness. Everything worked as advertised with no gotchya's or any issues which was really surprising. I installed it on a 2009 Smart fortwo Passion which I am towing behind my motorhome. My advice for anyone using this is take your time, read the directions carefully before you start and follow them step by step and you should have no issues. 281855

Weve put about 15,000 miles on the MHcar since installing the wiring harness and have no issues what so ever which when towing is a very welcome relief. I am very happy with your product and would highly recommend it.

I had previously owned another popular brand tow bar but I bought a heavier vehicle to tow behind my motorhome. Install was very easy except for the short wires on my Jeep, which is not the fault of this product. I ended up about 2 feet short when I ran the wiring to the other tail light, added some wire I had in the garage to complete the project. The directions did say to cut one end off but leave 3 feet of wire to be used on the motorhome, that's where I came out short. Tested after install and everything works fine. Now I have a clean. Professional look with my tow vehicle and don't need those magnet mounted lights any more 720865

  • Is Converter Needed for 2019 Jeep Cherokee Being Flat Towed by Motorhome With Separate Wiring
Since your 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited has combined wiring, if your Fleetwood Bounder does have separate wiring for its brakes and turn signals, you will need to use the Roadmaster Brite-Lite Wiring Converter # RM-732 when installing the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit # RM-154 on your Cherokee. However, please keep in mind some motorhomes have combined signals that are separated at the tow vehicle wiring so you will want to verify this with your motorhome manufacturer. Along...

Yes, you would just wire the green and yellow stop/turn brake circuits from the Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit # RM-154 to your brake lights on your 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. If you want to utilize your amber turn signals on your Jeep while flat towing you can use the Wiring Kit # 154-792-118158 instead which comes with a converter and the extra diodes you need to separate your brake and turn signals. Sounds like you are trying to use a diode kit like the Roadmaster Diode kit part # RM-154 to install tow bar wiring on a vehicle with separate function taillights.
