Video Transcript for Review of Custer Tow Bar Wiring - Bypasses Vehicle Wiring - LIW-LDTL

Today we're taking a look at the Custer Wireless LED Tow Bar Light. This is a weatherproof LED tow bar light that provides your stop, tail, side marker, and turn signal functions for your towed trailer or vehicle. The tail light bar shines red. For your tail lights, you'll have three diodes that are illuminated. Then you'll have one on each side.Brake light, everything lights up, so it brightens. For your turn signal light, you will have the red light flashing on either side, depending on which turn signal is activated. Then again, your side marker lights will stay on to keep your towed vehicle street legal. It's a wireless design, which is one of the biggest benefits of this system.

It eliminates the hassle of running wires or cords every time you tow.The transmitter, which is this unit here, it plugs directly into a four-pin socket. Then all you have to do is turn the light bar on, which there's an on and off switch. It's sealed back here, so it's protected. You just turn that on, and that allows you to use the lights as needed. Then you can turn them off when they're not in use, so that way you can conserve battery power. Now, this does feature a charge port right here.

And it comes with a charger. The rechargeable battery charges with the included 12-volt DC accessory socket.A green LED will illuminate when the unit is charging. When it's powered on, both turn signals will illuminate for approximately two seconds, showing that the batteries are fully charged. If the left turn comes on only, it means a partial charge. If neither turn signal lights up when you turn it on, then you need to charge your unit. Please keep in mind, with this unit, you cannot overcharge the battery in the light bar. It's a special battery, it cannot be overcharged.

So you can keep the bar on the charger when it's not in use. It's a LED system. LEDs make great replacements for incandescent lights. They last longer, they burn brighter, they're much more efficient. You don't have to worry about changing bulbs, and you don't have to worry about brittle filaments. The unit on the bottom has heavy-duty magnets on the base to provide a secure grip. These offer up to 90 pounds of pull, and they're rubber coated so they won't scratch or damage your vehicle's surface, or whatever surface they come into contact with. And then, again, weatherproof design.

We have a weatherproof exterior, which allows you to keep the light bar on your vehicle in all weather conditions. It's a durable polyethylene housing, so it won't warp or crack. And then the lights are all hard-wired, so the connections are all shrink-tubed. If for some reason moisture gets in there, it's still not going to affect the connection points.Pretty nice low profile design, for it being a light bar. Has a handle on top so you can easily move it around and take it with you. It is Department of Transportation compliant. Product's made in the U.S.A.A few measurements to go over with real quick, then we're going to hook it up to power, and I'll show you everything that it has to offer. So edge to edge, we're looking at about 23".From the very front of the unit to the very back, I did take a measurement from the outermost point of the LED lights, to the back of the charging port, and on and off switch. We have about a 5" depth right there. The box itself is just 4". And then when it comes to the overall height, bottom to top of the handle, it's about 4-1/2" tall; 3-1/4" tall not including the handle.I'm going to take this, I'm going to hook up my wires to it. I'm going to go ahead and turn on my light bar. You can see both illuminate, so that means we have a really good charge right now. What I'm doing is I'm just simulating as if I'm plugging this into a socket on a vehicle. And I'm going to go ahead and turn off our overhead lights so you can get a better look at it.This is the tail light function. You can see how we have the side markers illuminating as well. Now I'm going to hook up the turn, or I'll do the brakes first. You can see there how everything brightens up when the brakes are applied. Now I'll do turn signal. And I'll do the other one.Again, wireless design. This just plugs into the four-pin socket on your vehicle. That's going to do it for today's look at the Custer Wireless LED Tow Bar Light.

I just received the Custer Smart Light from etrailer yesterday. Charged the light bar for a few hours as recommended then mounted it to the roof of my SUV and plugged the transmitter into my motorhome. The light bar works as advertised. Time will tell if this item holds up to about 8K miles of towing per year. If all is well after a years use I give it 5 stars. 402632

I use the light bar on my SUV towed behind my RV. The towed vehicle is a $50k SUV so I was not excited about tapping into the wiring, or drilling holes in the taillight for an extra incandescent light in a well designed LED setup. I just have two comments. One make sure you zip tie the transmitter. If you are driving on 95 in the Northeast it will vibrate out. I am glad I thought of it or I would have been very unhappy. Second, you can not tell if the light runs out of juice. If it was not for irate truckers honking I would not have known. Be ready with a backup power supply in case your driving day includes a 3 hour delay due to accidents. Otherwise it has clung well, worked great and is very bright. I would recommend this product for any tower’s 455217

This is the best way I've had lights on the dinghy. I've been towing for 30 years. It's great not to have to get into the vehicle wiring. 551811

  • Recommended Parts to Dinghy Tow a 2017 Chevrolet Sonic LT Sedan
  • I have the perfect setup to dinghy tow your 2017 Chevrolet Sonic LT. For a tow bar I recommend using the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit, part # BX1703. This kit does not require any welding and has base plate tabs that can be removed for a very clean look when you are not towing your Sonic. The next thing that you will need is a tow bar. I really like the Blue Ox Alpha, part # BX7365, for this setup because it works well with the base plate kit and it comes with safety cables. This tow bar...

For your Grand Cherokee I recommend going with the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1128. • Availability of Wireless LED Tow Light that Uses a Rechargeable Battery
  • The exact thing that you just described is the Custer Wireless LED Tow Light # LIW-LDTL. It uses magnets to install on the towed vehicle and has a rechargeable battery so you to not have to purchase AA or AAA batteries to power it. For the light functions to work you will simply need to plug in the wireless transmitter to the 7-Way on the back or your RV or tow vehicle and then flip the switch to the "on" position on the light bar. • Will Custer Wireless LED Tow Light Still Work when Plugged in and Charging
  • I spoke with my contact at Custer about the Wireless LED Tow Light # LIW-LDTL. I learned that it can function while it is plugged in and charging at the same time. However, it charges via a 12 volt power outlet on a vehicle and since it is meant to be used on a vehicle that is being towed there are a couple of potential issues that could arise from this set up. First, the 12 volt outlets on a vehicle may not have power when the vehicle is turned off. And if the outlet does have power...

  • Base Plate for 2004 Jeep Liberty Thats Compatible with Reese Tow Bar
  • As long as your Liberty doesn't have a brush guard on it, the Roadmaster # RM-521423-5 base plate kit would be a good choice. If you DO have a brush guard, use # 521426-1. In order to be compatible with your Reese tow bar, you'd also need an adapter like part # RM-025. I'm not sure which Reese tow bar you have, but keep in mind that some of the Reese towbars have a limited speed rating of 45 mph. Then you can use the wireless LED light bar # LIW-LDTL plugged into the 7-way with your dolly plugged into the 4-way. You'll also need a 12-volt socket in the cargo area of the vehicle if there isn't already one. You can use # RM-9332. • With base plates installed on your 2001 Jeep Cherokee, # 1418-3 or # 1418-1, you will not be able to also install front mount trailer hitch # 65009. The issue is that both the base plates and the hitch install in the same place and occupy much of the same space so both cannot be installed at the same time. The same goes for Curt hitch # 31084. • Can RV/Tow Vehicle Be Spliced Directly Into 2017 GMC Sierra Tail Lights without Using Diodes
  • If you were to wire in the 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 tail lights directly to the tow vehicle there could be back feeding problems which could damage electrical components even if the battery is disconnected. There could also be shorts when the truck is not being towed and its lights are used. Using a diode system such as # TR118821 prevents that from happening. If you do not like the idea of tapping into the tail light wiring and adding diodes another option is a wireless and/or magnetic...

This system has a charging cord for the light, where the Pilot system uses 6 AA batteries that can be a hassle when the batteries go dead.

Your motorhome would need a hitch and a trailer connector at the rear.
