Video Transcript for Review of Custer Tow Bar Wiring - Bypasses Vehicle Wiring - SPL30B-6

Today we're going to take a look at the Custer Split Lens Magnetic Towing Tail Lights. The law usually requires that all tow cars have functional signal and brake lights in sync with the RV's towing them. Most wiring kits require you to splice into your vehicles electrical system, but doing this can void your manufacturer's warranty and cause electrical damage to your towed vehicle. What's nice is detachable tow lights like these, will avoid that problem, by having the wiring run underneath your car and plug into your power source. This kit is designed to mount on a horizontal surface. Does use the 120 pound pull magnets, so it holds on very good. It is a split lens design, you can see here, the red at the bottom is for your stop and tail lights and the amber at the top is for your turn signal and flashers.

They do use incandescent bulbs. They do have a wire between the two lights, which is about 10 foot in length. It does use a six-pin plug to plug into your six-way on your vehicle. The cord length, overall cord length on this is about 30 feet and it does include the two lights and the wiring harness. Just to show you the magnetic pull on this, it's very strong pull.

I got a piece of metal here, you can see that when that does attach, pulls on very tight and to remove it you really have to slide it off. It's pretty hard to even pull off. That should do it for the review on the Custer Split Lens Magnetic Towing Tail Lights.

I have a motor home that has the independent brake light/turn signals and it came with a converter that did not work with my 4 wire magnetic tow lights. I tried replacing it with no luck. These Split Lens magnetic tow lights work like a champ and no gadgets in line. Thank you etrailer for a great product and quick shipping. 518774

I really like the flexibility of changing this from one car to the next. And I like the amber. And red lenses. I will use this instead of wiring directly into the cars harness. 453871

The tow lights were high quality units, magnets at the base of lights were much stronger than lights previosly purchased at auto store. Floor mats were thick and look fine. Shipping was prompt and well packaged. 28694

Do you have a question about this Tow Bar Wiring?

  • What Are Dingy Wiring Harness Options for 2004 Honda CRV Towed by Motor Home
  • By far the simplest and least-intrusive type of dinghy lighting is a magnetic kit. Magnetic light kits do not require you to drill, install bulbs, splice wires or in any other permanent way alter your towed vehicle. They are easy to install and remove. For example, Custer offers their Split Lens Magnetic Towing Tail Light Kit, part # SPL30B-6, which includes two split-lens lights with magnetic bases and a 30-foot cable with round 6-pin connector (please refer to the included photo). These...

  • Turn Signals are Dim with Brake Lights Applied on Magnetic Tow Lights
  • It doesn't sound like to me that there is anything wrong with the lights or wiring. The turn signal and brake light are both carried through the same dual filament bulb. The circuit associated with the brake light will generally be brighter than the circuit for the turn signal. I recommend switching to an LED option which will make the turn signals much brighter when the brakes are applied in comparison to a set of magnetic tow lights with an incandescent bulb. For this we have the MaxxTow...

  • What are the Dimensions of the Lights in the Split Lens Magnetic Towing Tail Lights
  • On the Split Lens Magnetic Towing Tail Lights, # SPL30B-6, the lights are 4-3/8 inches tall from the bottom of the magnetic base. They are 8-3/8 inches wide. The amber and red sections are each 2 inches tall. The lights are 2-11/16 inches thick. The cord is 30 feet long.

  • Availability of Quick-Connect Tow Lights for Use with Tow Dolly
  • For cases where your tow dolly does not include lights the way the Roadmaster # RM-2050-1 does, we can help you with a set of easy-to-install and cost-effective towing lights. The linked page displays all of the removable tail light kits we have for flat towing. Most are magnetic mount like the # TL21RK but we also have a trunk-mount kit # EZT20B. Both of these have a 4-pole flat trailer connector but we also have a kit that uses a 6-pin plug, # SPL30B-6.

  • 7-Way Blade Style to 6-Way Round Trailer Connector Adapter
  • The magnetic tow lights # SPL30B-6 only have stop, tail, and turn signal functions so the 12 volt circuit and brake output circuit won't even be used. So basically it does not matter if the center pin on the adapter is brakes or power. Also, the 6-Way on the tow lights can be opened up so you can change around the wire configuration if needed. Extension # HM47083 is an excellent choice as is # HM47085. I have linked a video review of the latter.

  • Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 1995 Jeep Wrangler with a Roadmaster Sterling Tow Bar
  • For the 1995 Jeep Wrangler with the U-channel bumper you can use base plates # 1409-3 with your Sterling tow bar. The Sterling tow bar includes the safety cables so you will not need to add additional cables. It should also have a 6-Way connector. Magnetic light kit # SPL30B-6 uses a 6-Way connector if you do not already have a light kit. In additional to the base plates, tow bar, safety cables, and lights, most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat...

  • Magnetic Tow Lights for 2014 Toyota Prius
  • Since your 2014 Prius must be towed on a dolly, there are no wiring kits which have been tested to fit your car. However, you can still use magnetic tow lights such as the Split Lens Magnetic Towing Tail Lights # SPL30B-6, which has a 6-pin plug and 30' cord, or the MaxxTow Magnetic Tow Lights # MT70097 which has 4-way flat plugs.

  • Suitability of Custer Products Magnetic Mount Towing Lights # SPL30B-6 for Use on a Boat Trailer
  • According to my contact at Custer Products, their Magnetic Mount Towing Lights should not be submerged. You would be better off using a submersible or sealed lamp permanently installed on the trailer. If you would reply and give me a brief description of what you are wanting to do or provide some photos of the trailer in question, I would be happy to make some suggestions for you.

  • Magnetic Tow Lights Dim with Multiple Signals
  • It doesn't sound like to me that there is anything wrong with the lights or wiring. We have this complaint about magnetic lights quite often and there usually is nothing to blame. The turn signal and brake light are both carried through the same dual filament bulb. The circuit associated with the brake/running lights will generally be brighter than the circuit for the turn signal but this could vary depending on which circuit has the initial inrush of power. If you test each circuit directly...

  • Fit and Compatibility of Magnetic Tow Lights for 2014 Ford C-Max SE Hybrid Being Flat Towed
  • If your 2008 Winnebago Vista has a 4-pole connector the Custer # C-ATL20A Magnectic Towing Light Kit would be a great choice for your 2014 Ford C-Max SE Hybrid. The benefits to using a universal removable tail light kits like the Custer # C-ATL20A towed vehicle tail light kit is that this bypasses the towed car's wiring system and installs quickly and easily. The Custer lights will have a total of 23 feet of wiring to span the connection from Vista to C-Max. I have linked the above...
