Proportional Braking

A vast improvement over "on/off" systems, which brake at a single pre-set level, the Patriot II has a proportional design for equal braking. The actuator inside your towed car applies the brakes with the same intensity that you apply to them in your RV. If you slam on the RV's brakes in an emergency situation, the Patriot II engages your towed car's brakes with virtually the same intensity. If you press the RV's brakes just enough to slow a bit, your towed car's brakes are depressed just enough to slow it down, as well. The result is improved control, better stopping and less wear on both your vehicle's and RV's brakes.

Video Transcript for Blue Ox Patriot Proportional Braking System Installation - 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Speaker 1: Today on this 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, we'll be having a look at the Blue Ox Patriot II Portable Braking System, Part Number BRK2016. We're taking our RV out with our towed vehicle, with the braking system installed. The first thing you notice that this proportional braking system does is that when we're applying a little bit of brake in the RV, we're getting the same amount of brakes of being applied in our towed vehicle. If we're applying a lot of brake pressure, we'll get the matching amount of pressure inside the towed vehicle as well. Bringing our towed vehicle to a smooth and safe stop, in an equal manner with our RV, so we don't have to deal with feeling any jerking or pushing of the towed vehicle against the RV. We won't even really feel that it's back there. One thing many of our customers like about this unit is how easy it is to set up and use.

You simple have to mount a brake away switch in your vehicle and it simply sits on your floor, in front of your seat, and clamps to your brake pedal, and rests against the seat. That's it, there's no modification required to the vehicle at all. Also, this is one of the few braking systems out there that is compatible with hybrid vehicles, because hybrid vehicles don't have vacuum assisted brakes. This doesn't have to tap into your brake booster in order to work, so many of our customers with hybrids, this is there only option for a braking system. Also, another thing that many of our customers like is that if they have multiple vehicles that they flat tow, depending on the circumstance, they only have to have one braking system, and they can switch it between the two vehicles with ease.We also have a break away system, so in the unlikely event that our Grand Cherokee would become separated from our motor home, this pin would be pulled, bringing the vehicle to a stop.Inside our motor home, we have an easy to use display.

The bottom button here is our manual override, so if we get into a little squirrely situation, and our vehicle steps out beside the motor home, and we want to bring it back in line, we can manually apply the brakes on the car itself, to bring in back in line behind the motor home. We can adjust the force as needed, so if we want more braking pressure, we can press the force button, and we can go up for more power or down for less power. Right in the middle, about five, is right where we want to be, so we'll hit okay. We have an easy to use menu for adjusting sensitivity, pairing a remote, changing the back light on the display, so when it's braking you can see it better at night. Our max four settings, and if you change your settings and you don't like where it's at, you can easily go back to the factory settings by hitting the reset setting there.

We also have a back lit display, so at night you can just press this button here, and it will light up the display, and you can see it better. We also have an alert system, so if our brake aways switch was pulled, you'll get an audible warning and a message will be displayed on the display to let you know what's going on, so you can come to a stop. We have multiple different ways where we can put this display and controller. We can use the provided hook and loop tape to secure it someplace on the dash, if you want to have it permanently mounted, or we can use the rubber mat, which sticks very well, and we can stick this inside of it, so we can orient it in any position that we want. If we want it closer to our steering wheel, we can.To begin our install, we need to find a location to mount our break away switch. We just used the provided hardware from our baseplate in order to secure our break away switch to the bumper beam on our vehicle.

This gives us a nice, solid mount, and you want to do this when you have your fascia off, when you're installing your baseplate. The wires from the break away switch, you'll want to route behind the fascia, up behind your driver's side headlight, route it to the side of your air box here, go through this opening where your factory wiring harness and brake lines go through, and then it will go down and through a grommet, which is easily accessible through the inside of the vehicle. Here's the grommet where our wire comes through the firewall. This grommet is easily accessible from the inside of the vehicle. The best way to get the wire through is to poke a hole in the grommet, use a pole wire from the inside, push it through until you can grab it from underneath the windshield cowl, then you can tape the end of the break away cable to it, and pull it inside the vehicle. Now we find ourselves inside the motor home with our receiver here, and our controller. I'm going to take the 12 volt outlet here and plug it in to the 12 volt port inside the motor home, which we can use to adjust the settings on the Patriot without having to get inside the vehicle to do that. Now when we want to use our Patriot, we simply rest it on our floor here, in front of our seat. We'll take our pedal clamp, slide it around our brake pedal, and we'll lock it to the brake pedal. We'll now slide our seat forward, so it gently rests against the back of the Patriot, just enough so it's going to hold it in place, but not so much that it applies our brakes. Just like that will be fine. We'll now take our break away cable and plug it into the port, where is says break away. Now to accommodate vehicles that have uneven floors, that aren't perfectly flat like this Grand Cherokee, there are feet that can screw into the bottom of the unit to make sure that it sits flat and level on the floor. To accommodate large brake pedals, there are larger clamps that come with it as well, so it can easily clamp around your brake pedal regardless of the type of vehicle that you have. We'll now take our 123 volt outlet cord and plug it in to the constant 12 volt power. We'll now press the power button on the Patriot, and we'll press the set up button now. It will do it's self-test operation, and once we have the green power light on that's solid, we know we're ready to go inside the vehicle. Now we'll take our break away cable and we'll attach it to the break away switch on the front of our vehicle. We'll take the other end, go over the top of our tow bar, we'll now take the other end and insert it through the safety chain loop opening on our hitch on the motor home, wrap it through, and we'll clip it onto the cable itself, just like that. That completes our look at and showing you how to install the Blue Ox Patriot II Portable Braking System, Part Number BRK2016, on this 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Blue Ox Patriot II Radio Frequency, Portable Braking System - Proportional - BRK2016

Average Customer Rating:  4.8 out of 5 stars   (150 Customer Reviews)

Now you can get full-power emergency braking or slow-to-an-idle action with the same system. The Patriot II ensures that the brakes in your towed car are activated at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your RV.

I have used the Blue Ox braking system for over a year now. I pull a Ford Edge with a Class C motor home and needed the additional braking power provided by this system. I can install and remove the system in a few minutes. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the price of the system. 694809

This brake unit not only lives up to every expectation, it's also so simple to set up and use that you think 'there's got to be more to it than this' (but there's really not). I've had it about a year and have towed my Jeep Wrangler JK behind my Georgetown GT3 motor home over 2000 miles with it. It does everything it's supposed to do, I feel very confident with it. 670673

I wish I had nice things to say about this braking system, but I don't. The controller (the thing with an LCD window that you keep up front in your motor coach and plug into the 12V DC outlet) went dead within 4 months. So now I have an expensive, space consuming paperweight. Also, the braking apparatus can be difficult to attach to your brake pedal. A better design would have the upper and lower pieces hinge and lock, or have the curved parts retractable, so you can place it and then lock into position instead of mucking around with trying to wiggle and slide it onto the brake pedal. Not fun in the rain. I don't recommend this product. 677374

We tow a Chevrolet 1500 4x4, and have traveled to Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho Arkansas and Oklahoma in the past year, the braking system has worked great for us. I really liked the easy installation and it is very easy to setup and remove from the vehicle. The transmitter inside motor home did fail but the braking system worked without the transmitter. Etrailer replaced the transmitter ASAP, very professional and helpful personnel at etrailer. 675477

Works fine. Seems to be slightly slow on the response. The pad to hold the controller is useless. Overall the brake system does what we need and with adequate controls for the job. 617931

For the price, I should really give this one star, but we haven't really invested the time to figure the thing out. The few times we were able to use it, it didn't really engage fast enough or with enough force to be of any use. Since then, we've running into the 'low battery' problem that seems common on the internet. You put it in, set up it up, plug it into a freshly charged batter and it say 'low battery' and refuses to run. Have spent the time to sort out what's really going on. For this much money, we shouldn't be having these problems. 279599

This Patriot brake system is the best. Some people tell you that you don't need it if you towing are under 3000 lbs. but the first time use it I was glad I had it. I wired it so power came off the motorhome instead of the car battery. no worries about draining car battery. 228991

Hi Gary Just purchased the blue ox brake system and would like to know how you wired your power off your rv. I have the 7 blade receptacle on my rv and a 6 pole for lights only on my tow vehicle.

This is the 3rd time that I have ordered items from etrailer.com. I have to say that I couldn't be more pleased. Ordering on line is extremely easy, I received a verification call later the same day. The units shipped and were delivered within 4 days. I have not had an opportunity to use the products but believe they will fit my needs. When I made my first general inquiry about what Items I might need, John (one of the tech reps.) sent me a list of recommendations along with a link to numerous videos that explain the installation of each of the units. I think their service is one of the best on the market. 322565

I used the patriot II on 5 trips over 5,000 miles total this year and it worked perfectly. The set up and connection is simple as is the removal when you get to your destination.

2010 Jeep Patriot

Chose this one because it will work with a hybrid vehicle - a 2010 Mercury Mariner Hybrid. I did not want to install any of the more permanent systems due to the complexities of hybrid wiring, the need to perform surgery on the car and limited space under the hood. So we chose the Patriot. It has worked well. It can sometimes a bit touchy to get adjusted correctly, and if not positioned correctly, it will engage the dinghy brakes for too long, and then time out, requiring a stop to reset the system. Overall, however, we have been extremely happy with how it has functioned. Having the monitor in the cockpit of the coach is very nice. When we ordered it, we unexpectedly needed it in a bit of a hurry, and the salesman, Ricky, said he would have it to us in time, and he did. He was our RVing hero of the day. Excellent service from etrailer. Thanks trailer for great service and an excellent product! 285048

Never flat-towed a vehicle before (though I have many thousands of miles with various trailers). Needed a supplemental braking system and after much research, including talking with a representative of etrailer.com, chose the Patriot. Product set up fairly easily the first time and I got better at it as time went on. After initial set-up I drove around town then the next day left on a thousand mile trip. The Patriot performed flawlessly and all features worked as advertised. I am quite pleased with the product and also the service of etrailer.com. I did have one incidence of having to apply the brakes suddenly and fairly aggressively and I knew the Patriot was functioning as it should as I could feel the Jeep's brakes being applied. 227827

2012 Jeep Patriot

After reviewing the E-trailer video for installing; we put the Patriot BRk2012 in place. First powered up without connecting the power cord and verified we got the low battery alarm. Powered back off, connected the power plug to a hot 12 volt outlet and turned back on. The unit went through it's start and test procedure. It seems to be fairly secure. The rest of the installation is straight forward. Because we are adding a power source from the motor home time is a little longer to install. Unlike the video the brake disconnect wiring was run in split tubing. The remote unit has not been installed or tested as of this time. Gave 4 stores because there is no way to tell if the internal battery is charged or even charging. 319157

Comments

Works well but if you get an error it requires you to pull over and power off and back on the unit to reset. This can be set by bumpy roads or step down hills even when no braking, also get braking action sometimes when the MH down shifts. Need to be able to reset errors from the remote unit. Also need a way to increase the time before you get braking time out error. It worked well other wise for the 5k miles we did this summer and the 4k miles last winter.

Thanks for your reply, I have reached out to my contact at Blue Ox regarding the issues that you are having with your braking system. He explained that if you have the small screw-in style of feet on the base of the the braking system unit those can be removed, and this will allow the Patriot II to sit more level and should reduce the need to reset as frequently. In this case the braking system sit directly on the floor of the towed vehicle.

Per usual the item was shipped fast and secure from etrailer.com. The information, support and videos, etrailers, provides were of great help in me making the decision to purchase the Patriot brake controller. I was looking at used units from various manufacturers, but after weighing cost, warranty after purchase support new was the way to go and etrailer was the place to buy. It is as simple to set up as indicated. Installation is quick and easy in our J/K Wrangler, so quick I think I am forgetting to do something. The remote control located in the RV is simple and straight forward to operate. Running the break away wire was straight forward and easy to accomplish. I have only use the Patriot on a few short trips, so far, and worked fine. Have a couple of longer trips coming up so will try and update later this fall. 279734

This is very easy to install and works just as it should. The set up in the 2019 Honda Fit took some extra work though. The floor pan on the driver's side is an odd shape and does not allow for an easy placement of the device. I used a piece of 4 x 4 lumber under the front of the machine so it would match the height of the back. This leaves almost no space between the top front of the machine housing. Once I got this sorted out, everything worked just fine. Set up and adjustment could not be any easier. Due to a problem not related to the breaking system, I let the battery in the towed run low and discovered another bit of important info. With the towed battery almost dead, the machine still gave the normal light signals on the unit. It would not respond to the set up button on the machine and there was no visible indication of why. I figured it out on my own after some trouble shooting. Overall, I am happy with the wireless feature the most. 711927

Ask the Experts about this Blue Ox Tow Bar Braking Systems

Do you have a question about this Tow Bar Braking System?

  • Will Blue Ox Patriot Braking System Drain Battery on Honda Fit
  • The Blue Ox Patriot Radio Frequency Portable Braking System # BRK2016 referenced in your question will be powered by your Honda Fit's battery, so if you will be towing for long periods of time or if the vehicle is not started periodically, it's possible that the battery can be drained. I recommend checking the owner's manual for your Honda Fit for any guidelines or steps that need to be taken before flat towing. Many vehicles will require that the battery be disconnected for this reason....

  • How Does The Blue Ox Patriot II Flat Tow Braking System Work?
  • The Blue Ox Patriot II Radio Frequency, Portable Braking System - Proportional # BRK2016 uses an in-coach RF controller that plugs into a 12V outlet in the cab of the motorhome. This accelerometer or deceleration sensor in the RF controller senses the braking action of the motorhome and sends a signal to the brake system in the towed vehicle. Since it is a proportional system, it will apply the brakes in the same proportion to the braking action of the motorhome. This also allows you...
