Automatic, Truly Proportional Braking

BrakeMaster offers truly proportional, synchronized braking by connecting directly to your RV's hydraulic brakes. The air cylinder that attaches to your towed vehicle's brake pedal will apply your car's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity as you apply the brakes in the RV. To achieve this proportional braking, the BrakeMaster uses air pressure from your coach's brakes to depress the brake pedal in your towed car. The result is uniform, real-time braking that mirrors the slowing or stopping action of your coach.

Many other proportional systems activate the towed car's brakes based solely on inertia. With this kind of setup, any activity that affects the forward momentum of your towed car - from the coach actually braking, to driving over a pothole - can activate the supplemental braking system and apply your towed car's brakes. This potential for false braking, which can occur simply from driving over uneven terrain, can create a rough ride for you in the RV and can also wear out your towed car's brakes over time. The BrakeMaster is different, though. Because it is tied into your coach's brakes and is not dependent on inertia, this system activates only when you apply the brakes in your RV, so there is no false braking.

This braking system will work with almost any RV that has hydraulic brakes. It will also fit nearly any car, although a seat adapter may be required for installation in certain vehicles.

Installation and Easy Connection

The BrakeMaster connects directly to your RV's hydraulic brakes, making the installation quite involved. An advanced mechanical background is required. To install, first mount the air compressor in your RV. This compressor supplies the air needed to activate the braking cylinder in the towed car. Next, connect the included proportioning valve. This unit senses the pressure with which the brakes are applied in your RV. The solenoid on the valve wires to your RV's tail lights and opens when it receives the signal that your RV brakes have been activated. When it opens, it allows air from the compressor to be released into the included air line. The amount of compressed air that is released will be proportional to the hydraulic pressure from your brakes. This air then travels to the actuating cylinder that mounts in your towed car.

In the towed vehicle, secure the actuating cylinder either to a custom seat adapter (sold separately) or to universal floor plate 450650-01 (sold separately). The clamp on the opposite end of the cylinder attaches to your car's brake pedal. When air is released from the compressor in your RV, it will travel through the air line that connects to the cylinder. The cylinder will then transfer that air pressure to the actuating arm, which will apply the brake pedal in your towed car.

Once the BrakeMaster is completely installed, connecting and disconnecting is quick, easy, and requires no tools or adjustments. To disconnect the system, just remove the clamp from the brake pedal, unclip the cylinder from the mounting bracket, and disconnect the air hose. To connect again later, simply attach the clamp to the pedal, secure the cylinder to the bracket on your floor or seat adapter, and reconnect to the air hose.

Breakaway Device

BrakeAway

In the unlikely event that your vehicle separates from your motor home, the included breakaway system will give you peace of mind. Just mount the breakaway switch at the front of your towed car and wire it to both your battery and to the BrakeAway air reservoir. The air reservoir connects to the actuator that presses the brake pedal in your towed car. If your towed car separates from your motor home, the pin in the breakaway switch will be pulled out, which will send a signal to the BrakeAway to activate. The BrakeMaster actuator will then be signaled to press your towed car's brake pedal, bringing your vehicle to a stop.

Monitor Alerts

Most supplemental braking systems have methods of letting you know you when the system is activated, but they don't necessarily inform you of whether or not the brake pedal is being depressed. Such setups leave opportunities for false notification, which can be dangerous and potentially damaging. If the system activates but doesn't depress your car's brake pedal, then your RV's brakes will be taxed because they will have to brake for the towed car as well. On the other hand, if the system isn't properly positioned, it could be pressing your car's brake pedal continuously, which could damage your vehicle. BrakeMaster's system is different. The included LED monitor connects to your towed car's brake light switch. When your car's brake light goes on or off, so does the notification light. This way you'll always know whether or not your car's brake pedal is being pressed.

Video Transcript for Review of Roadmaster Tow Bar Braking Systems - BrakeMaster for Hydraulic Brakes - RM-9060

Today we'll be taking a look at the Roadmaster BrakeMaster supplemental braking system for RVs with hydraulic brakes. Now this is going to be a system to help you stay compliant with state and federal laws to flat tow your vehicle. This is going to apply the braking force in our towed vehicle to make sure that it comes to a safe and complete stop. So it's going to work similarly to a brake controller in a vehicle like if you have a truck and you're towing a trailer or a fifth wheel camper or something similar to that. That brake controller is going to apply the brakes in your trailer or your camper to help bring it to stop so your towing vehicle isn't doing all the work.Same thing with the supplemental braking system. We're going to make sure that our RV isn't having to stop both itself and that towed vehicle.

It's going to provide the signal to our towed vehicle, so that we can use its brakes to actually bring it to a stop. Basically the way that works, we'll have this actuator arm that's going to be mounted in our towed vehicle. Has a clamp that goes around our brake pedal and that is what is actually pushing against the brake pedal to operate the brakes in our towed vehicle and slow it down and bring it to a stop. That is powered by an air supply that comes from our tank and compressor assembly. This unit would be mounted on our RV. And then we'll have a monitor that connects into the hydraulic brakes on our RV.

So that we can convert that hydraulic force to air and then connect to our actuator and then connect to our brakes. So that's basically how this works. That being said, you do need to tap into your hydraulic system on your RV. We'll get some hard brake lines to make that connection. Along with our brass fittings to get everything connected up.But that would be something that if you're not familiar or you're not comfortable with making those kinds of connections and working with those hard end lines.

This might be a kit that you would want to take to a professional mechanic to actually get installed. It can be a little bit intimidating. Of course there's a ton of parts laid out here on the table. So it's a little bit overwhelming and if you don't feel comfortable with that, you can always take it to somebody to have it installed. But if you have worked on vehicles, you've worked with hard brake lines before and you feel confident with doing that, that is totally within your means to do.Our system is pretty complete.

We'll get all the wiring, the connection between our towed and our RV, our breakaway system. We'll have this box that's mounted up on the front. And the wire that goes in between our towed vehicle and our RV. That has its own actuator or compressor tank mounted on our towed vehicle. So that indicates if an accidental disconnect, our brakes will be applied and it'll bring our towed vehicle to a stop. The one thing that's missing from this kit would be the bracket that mounts around our driver seat that his actuator connects to. It's a bracket that goes underneath the feet on your driver's seat in your towed vehicle. And they're custom fits. Most vehicles out there will have a custom fit. The way to find that is to go to our fit guide here at etrailer.com. Put in your year, make, and model and then you'll find a bracket that way. They are sold separately from this kit, since they are custom. If your vehicle doesn't have a custom fit bracket, there is a universal plate that is available. It's very unlikely that you won't have a custom fit. But with that universal bracket, you do have to drill through the floorboard to get that installed. So that's something to keep in mind. Like I said, most vehicles they will have that custom bracket from Roadmaster. But just something to keep in mind you will need an extra component in addition to all of this to get this to work properly. If I was going to compare this to a similar supplemental braking system, I would look at the SMI stay and play duo. That's also going to work for RVs with hydraulic brakes. The thing that I like better about that system is that it's a little bit more user friendly as far as getting it installed. If you want to do this yourself, the SMI stay and play duo is a bit simpler. That being said, you do have to connect into the brakes on your vehicle. So there's a tube, one of the brake hoses on your towed vehicle and the engine compartment. It's coming off the brake booster. That's typically where you're going to make that connection and T into it to provide the air for the SMI stay and play duo. If that's something that you don't want to do, you don't want to make any kind of modifications to your towed vehicle, it's totally understandable. This will be a great alternative. You're not going to be making any modifications to your towed vehicle, except for that bracket, which just mounts under the existing hardware for your front seat. So that's something to consider there. The other comparison that I would make between the two would be that we do have to set up this actuator every time we want to tow our towed vehicle. And then every time we want to drive it, we have to take it back out. So there is some setup and adjustment that we have to make every time we connect and disconnect our towed vehicle. With the SMI, you don't have to worry about that. Once it's installed, it's pretty much good to go. There is a little control box to adjust the braking system or to adjust the braking force. So this is a truly proportional system. It's going to be reading directly off of our hydraulic brakes to provide that braking force. With the stay and play duo, it will be a proportional system, but you do have to make some adjustments to get your braking force dialed in.So kind of depends on what you're looking for. I personally like the SMI, just because once it's installed, you really don't have anything to worry about. Making that adjustment, it's just a little knob on a small box that's mounted in your floorboard, kind of mounted up to the driver's side kick panel. Make adjustments with that knob and you're pretty much good to go. This can be a little bit more cumbersome. But it really depends on what you're looking for as far as setup and what you want to do as far as modifications and install. That being said, customers really like the BrakeMaster. It works well. It does its job. You're not going to feel that towed vehicle pushing on the RV or pulling it. It's just going to feel like your driving your motor home normally and you don't even know that that towed vehicle is back there. It does have a warning light that will be mounted in the RV. So you can see that the brakes are being applied. And if anything we're to happen, if those brakes are holding for a prolonged period of time, it actually will flash at you. This will show you every time those brakes are being applied, so you know what's going on.And that's going to do it for our look at the Roadmaster BrakeMaster braking system with breakaway for RVs with hydraulic brakes.

Your customer service leaves nothing lacking, and this follow-up from you is so out of character for the many web sites I have purchased from over the years. I am impressed by you and your company. I bought the tow bar and the brake system for my Equinox, and installed them my self (I am 70 years old) - and with your provided instructions and video, I had no problems (even though I was surprised by the number of parts and detail that went into the assemblies). Both systems have worked very well, with no problems. I am completely satisfied with them, and have told my friends and traveling acquaintances about your company. Thanks for your follow-up! 382390

Ordering was easy, I verified the seat bracket by telephone, and everyones I talked to was a pleasure, all my questions were answered in a professional manor. Price could not be beat anywhere else. My dealer could not beat the price, so I bought what I needed and then gave it to my dealer to install. I have now used it for about a week driving 1,000 miles and it works as advertised, even up and down mountains using the exhaust brake, everything worked better than I could hope. Thank you 244032

Roadmaster was real slow with the delivery of the seat adapter. But Michael kept me informed all the way through to the delivery. etrailer is 5 stars all the way from start to finish. I look forward to using them in my orders to follow. Now for ROADMASTER products RM-643 safety cables quality is good work fine Delivery was fast RM-9160 brake master system Love this system instructions were easy to follow RM-15267 toad tail light/brake wiring good instructions for install RM-1550-1 base plate good instructions for install except you need to drill two 1/2'' holes you must measure and mark as there is no pilot hole. The whole system works great with the 2008 Honda Pilot RM-88189 seat adapter I have yet to install as I had to make up my own for the trip. I will say the seat adapter bracket is made just for the Honda and Acura, they had to make custom make. Thanks to all the car towed great for my first trip of 1,100 miles 692902

Got everything installed except the foot that mounts to the floor. It wasn't in the box. I called etrailer who contacted Roadmaster and they said they would ship and I should have in a couple of days. Installed everything else along with the tow bar and light kit. Followed all the instructions and all went smoothly with no issues. Just have to wait for the missing part to complete and test. 188069

I installed this on our 2004 Chevy Colorado. Was a snap. You will need the optional relay kit too. Our RV is a 97 Monaco Roadmaster suggests dealer installation. I would go along with that too, for most people. In my case, my skills include most things automotive and diesel and street rod electrical systems. So i was comfortable doing it. 159173
