Proportional Braking

A vast improvement over "on/off" systems, which brake at a single pre-set level, the Patriot II has a proportional design for equal braking. The actuator inside your towed car applies the brakes with the same intensity that you apply to them in your RV. If you slam on the RV's brakes in an emergency situation, the Patriot II engages your towed car's brakes with virtually the same intensity. If you press the RV's brakes just enough to slow a bit, your towed car's brakes are depressed just enough to slow it down, as well. The result is improved control, better stopping and less wear on both your vehicle's and RV's brakes.

2010 Jeep Patriot

Chose this one because it will work with a hybrid vehicle - a 2010 Mercury Mariner Hybrid. I did not want to install any of the more permanent systems due to the complexities of hybrid wiring, the need to perform surgery on the car and limited space under the hood. So we chose the Patriot. It has worked well. It can sometimes a bit touchy to get adjusted correctly, and if not positioned correctly, it will engage the dinghy brakes for too long, and then time out, requiring a stop to reset the system. Overall, however, we have been extremely happy with how it has functioned. Having the monitor in the cockpit of the coach is very nice. When we ordered it, we unexpectedly needed it in a bit of a hurry, and the salesman, Ricky, said he would have it to us in time, and he did. He was our RVing hero of the day. Excellent service from etrailer. Thanks trailer for great service and an excellent product! 285048

This is the 3rd time that I have ordered items from etrailer.com. I have to say that I couldn't be more pleased. Ordering on line is extremely easy, I received a verification call later the same day. The units shipped and were delivered within 4 days. I have not had an opportunity to use the products but believe they will fit my needs. When I made my first general inquiry about what Items I might need, John (one of the tech reps.) sent me a list of recommendations along with a link to numerous videos that explain the installation of each of the units. I think their service is one of the best on the market. 322565

This Patriot brake system is the best. Some people tell you that you don't need it if you towing are under 3000 lbs. but the first time use it I was glad I had it. I wired it so power came off the motorhome instead of the car battery. no worries about draining car battery. 228991

Works fine. Seems to be slightly slow on the response. The pad to hold the controller is useless. Overall the brake system does what we need and with adequate controls for the job. 617931

For the price, I should really give this one star, but we haven't really invested the time to figure the thing out. The few times we were able to use it, it didn't really engage fast enough or with enough force to be of any use. Since then, we've running into the 'low battery' problem that seems common on the internet. You put it in, set up it up, plug it into a freshly charged batter and it say 'low battery' and refuses to run. Have spent the time to sort out what's really going on. For this much money, we shouldn't be having these problems. 279599

We tow a Chevrolet 1500 4x4, and have traveled to Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho Arkansas and Oklahoma in the past year, the braking system has worked great for us. I really liked the easy installation and it is very easy to setup and remove from the vehicle. The transmitter inside motor home did fail but the braking system worked without the transmitter. etrailer replaced the transmitter ASAP, very professional and helpful personnel at etrailer. 675477

2012 Jeep Patriot

After reviewing the E-trailer video for installing; we put the Patriot BRk2012 in place. First powered up without connecting the power cord and verified we got the low battery alarm. Powered back off, connected the power plug to a hot 12 volt outlet and turned back on. The unit went through it's start and test procedure. It seems to be fairly secure. The rest of the installation is straight forward. Because we are adding a power source from the motor home time is a little longer to install. Unlike the video the brake disconnect wiring was run in split tubing. The remote unit has not been installed or tested as of this time. Gave 4 stores because there is no way to tell if the internal battery is charged or even charging. 319157

Works well but if you get an error it requires you to pull over and power off and back on the unit to reset. This can be set by bumpy roads or step down hills even when no braking, also get braking action sometimes when the MH down shifts. Need to be able to reset errors from the remote unit. Also need a way to increase the time before you get braking time out error. It worked well other wise for the 5k miles we did this summer and the 4k miles last winter.

Thanks for your reply, I have reached out to my contact at Blue Ox regarding the issues that you are having with your braking system. He explained that if you have the small screw-in style of feet on the base of the the braking system unit those can be removed, and this will allow the Patriot II to sit more level and should reduce the need to reset as frequently. In this case the braking system sit directly on the floor of the towed vehicle.

I wish I had nice things to say about this braking system, but I don't. The controller (the thing with an LCD window that you keep up front in your motor coach and plug into the 12V DC outlet) went dead within 4 months. So now I have an expensive, space consuming paperweight. Also, the braking apparatus can be difficult to attach to your brake pedal. A better design would have the upper and lower pieces hinge and lock, or have the curved parts retractable, so you can place it and then lock into position instead of mucking around with trying to wiggle and slide it onto the brake pedal. Not fun in the rain. I don't recommend this product. 677374

Jeep Patriot

Never flat-towed a vehicle before (though I have many thousands of miles with various trailers). Needed a supplemental braking system and after much research, including talking with a representative of etrailer.com, chose the Patriot. Product set up fairly easily the first time and I got better at it as time went on. After initial set-up I drove around town then the next day left on a thousand mile trip. The Patriot performed flawlessly and all features worked as advertised. I am quite pleased with the product and also the service of etrailer.com. I did have one incidence of having to apply the brakes suddenly and fairly aggressively and I knew the Patriot was functioning as it should as I could feel the Jeep's brakes being applied. 227827

This is a great kit . I installed it on my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. My wife and I installed the Break a way after removing the Front Bumper Cover . We only had to drill one hole in the Bumper Reinforcement and the aligned the Bumper Cover up the trim the Lower Grill to allow Clearance for the Break a way unit. This is the hardest part of hole set up. The unit itself is basically plug n play and worked great ! 871133

Had 2 of these. Both failed, broke. First one worked when tested after we first got it. Then when we went to use it it failed to work. Just made a loud clicking sound. Stranded in North Carolina for a week waiting for a replacement. Replacement put in tow car and got us back to Michigan. Second time we went to use it it did same thing as the first. Just made a loud clicking sound... JUNK ! Full refund both times, but the frustration and having to stay in RV park for a 5 days waiting on replacement sucked and cost over $100.00 :-( 837047

I have only used this on several short trips andonce on a long trip and it seemed to work fine. I did have an issue with the first unit i received and they were will to ship me a replacement along my route so it did not hold up my trip. I really appreciated the customer service on that issue. I will say i have not made any sudden stops so i can't comment on how much braking is actually happening but i believe it is assisting in the braking. 830864

I have used this many times on trips that were over one thousand miles. Other than having it replaced under warranty, it has worked great. On the first long trip when I was setting up for the return, the unit would just click after applying power. After contacting customer service, they quickly sent a replacement. I couldn’t have asked for better support. I have been using the replacement now and have had no issues. 829555
