A supplemental braking system is crucial when you tow a car or truck behind your RV. Without it, the weight of the towed car can create a safety hazard, strain your RV's brakes, or affect your RV's warranty. Most states require a supplemental braking system.


Automatic, Proportional Braking

The Delta Force is both automatic and fully proportional. In dual-signal mode, this system relies on your towed car's momentum as well as your RV's brake light signal to activate. As a result, the Delta Force will automatically activate any time you engage your RV's brakes, so long as there is enough deceleration for the system to detect.


An inertia-sensing, analog mercury switch inside the Delta Force's operating unit is what makes this system proportional. This fail-safe switch reads and interprets changes in forward momentum that occur when your towing setup decelerates. As your RV and car slow down, this switch sends a signal to activate your towed vehicle's brake pedal with an intensity that matches the deceleration of your RV. The result is even braking across your towing setup. Whether you lightly tap the brakes in your RV or apply them hard in a panic situation, your towed car's brakes will be applied proportionately.


Dual Activation Signals

When the Delta Force detects a change in forward momentum and the coach brake lights come on, the actuator applies proportionate brake pressure to your car's brake pedal. If the internal mercury switch is powered but there is no change in momentum, the system will not trigger the towed car's brakes. Likewise, if a decrease in forward momentum occurs but there is no brake light signal from the RV, the system will not activate the towed car's brakes. Because the Delta Force is designed to rely on the application of your RV's brakes, there is no false braking when you have the system in dual-signal mode. So you can drive over rough terrain and steep grades without any of the false braking that can lead to a rough ride for you in the RV and that can also wear out your towed car's brakes over time.


Using the dual-signal mode is optional. For a quicker installation, you can set up the Delta Force system to activate based solely on inertia. But it is recommended that you tie into your tow bar wiring to set up the system in dual-signal mode for a safer, more reliable braking system.


Brake Sensitivity Settings

The Delta Force allows you to fine-tune the braking sensitivity to fit your personal preference. By adjusting the sensitivity on the operating unit, you get to decide how intense the change in forward momentum must be for the internal sensor to respond. Set the sensitivity low and the Delta Force will only respond when you forcibly step on your RV's brake pedal. Set the sensitivity high and it will respond when you merely tap your RV's brakes.


Small, Portable System

The Delta Force is smaller than most other portable braking systems, making it easier to position for use and to remove for storage. You can store the unit in your trunk and still have room for groceries. And unlike larger units, you can mount the Delta Force without having to reposition your driver's seat.


SMI Small Unit

The Delta Force is tethered to your Ford F-150 with the included cable. This cable ensures that the unit stays in position, even as the actuator pushes on the brake pedal. This way, the unit won't push against the seat for positioning. As a result, the unit won't slide up your seat and cause failure like other portable braking systems might.


The Delta Force's air compressor powers the actuator so that it will apply pressure to your towed car's brake pedal. To get power for the air compressor, the operating unit will plug into your towed car's 12V accessory outlet.


Initial Installation

The Delta Force is easy to install. It requires very little drilling and just some simple wiring.


You will need to drill and cut into your Ford F-150's firewall to tether the unit with the included stainless steel cable. This tether allows the actuator to work without having to use your seat for leverage. By properly tightening the tether, you keep the unit from moving. You won't need any additional brackets to keep the unit from repositioning.


SMI Delta Force Pedal

The pedal clamp holds the actuator in place on the pedal. To adjust the clamp, loosen the center knob and slide the top and bottom brackets up and down until you achieve the correct fit. Once you've tightened the knob to set the clamp in position, you won't need to adjust it again to tow the same Ford F-150. Simply hook the top bracket over the top of the brake pedal and push the clamp into place on the pedal.


SMI Delta Force Actuator

The actuator depresses your towed car's brake pedal when you apply your coach brakes. This actuator attaches to the front of the operating unit with a ball-and-socket joint that allows for all-around flexibility. The joint rotates in a manner similar to the way your ankle rotates as your foot depresses the brake pedal during normal driving. With this flexibility of movement, the actuating cylinder stays perpendicular to the brake pedal no matter how far it is depressed.


Adjustable feet allow up to 2" of height adjustment so that you can level the operating unit on the floor of your towed vehicle. When setting up the feet, make sure that the actuator does not touch the lip of the operating unit.


SMI Delta Force Monitor

The Delta Force's CoachLink monitor installs in your RV and lets you keep tabs on the braking unit in your towed car. The CoachLink displays the amount of force used during braking and it continually monitors the connection with the towed car. Visual and audible alarms alert you in the case of a breakaway situation or an error code. You can use the monitor in your coach, along with your GPS, satellite radio, and other electronics without interference because the CoachLink operates using radio frequency. And this wireless monitoring device is FCC compliant.


Continuous Setup

Once you have the unit tailored to your towed car, you can quickly and easily set it up when you're ready to tow. Just position the Delta Force on your floor, hookup the tether cable, and attach the pedal clamp.


SMI Delta Force Braking Profile

Delta Force's control touchpad is located on the operating unit. This touchpad lets you manage your brake settings. To begin setup, push the "initialize" button. The system will run digital diagnostics on the internal air tank, compressor, actuator, transmitter, and pedal connection. Use the "select" button to toggle through to your towed vehicle style. There is even a braking profile that allows for a hybrid car's continuous-power-assist brakes.


Once you have your braking profile set, you can adjust the sensitivity by turning the gain knob at the bottom of the unit. Then, you can also choose the "boost" option to increase the sensitivity an extra 15 percent.


Charging Circuit

During towing, keep your towed car's running lights on and the operating unit plugged into your car's 12V outlet. To ensure that there is sufficient power in your towed car's battery to operate the Delta Force for the duration of your trip, a charge wire is included. With the charge wire, you can connect the coach's wiring to your Ford F-150. Just run the wire from the running light circuit on your RV to the towed car's battery to maintain a charge.


Breakaway Switch

The included breakaway system ensures that your Ford F-150 will come safely to a stop if it accidentally detaches from the RV while being towed. A switch mounts to the front of the towed car. This switch - which is wired into the operating unit - includes a pin that connects to your RV's hitch receiver with a breakaway cable. If the car separates, the cable pulls the pin from the switch, causing a signal to be sent to the operating unit to apply your towed car's brakes.

Hi there, Ford owners. Today in our 2017 Ford F-150 we're going to be installing SMI's Delta Force Portable Supplemental Braking System. Your braking system is just one of the main components you'll need when flat towing your vehicle. In addition to your braking system, you'll also need a base plate, which provides a connection point for your tow bars, you'll need your tow bars, which connects the vehicle to the motor home, you'll need your safety cables, which is a supplemental connection in addition to the tow bar in the event of a catastrophic disconnect, to ensure your vehicle stays connected, and your dialed wiring which receives all the signals from your motor home and sends them to the tail lights on your vehicle so people behind you know your intentions.Now, you'll want to keep in mind that this unit isn't completely portable. There are components you do have to install on the vehicle. It does come out ...

this part does come out, but those components will stay installed on the vehicle, so you will not be able to just put this into another vehicle without having those other components installed on that vehicle, as well, to operate. This is a proportional braking system. It has inertia sensors inside of it, and receives stop signals from your diode wiring to know when you're pressing the pedal. And the inertia sensors know how hard it needs to depress the pedal here in the vehicle.Now let's take a look at it in action. I'm going to go ahead and depress the brakes in the motor home.

And you can see that it applies here in the vehicle. For added safety measures, there is a breakaway switch that's included with your braking system. So in the event of a catastrophic disconnect, the cable will get pulled, pulling the pin here, and this will apply the brakes in your vehicle to help it come to a safe stop.Additionally, the unit comes with a monitor that can be plugged into your motor home, just using your typical 12 volt outlet. And you'll see that it shows the unit's powered up, that we have a link with the unit in the towed vehicle. And when I press the brake here, you can see that it shows the braking force that it's applying.

This will give you peace of mind knowing that your unit's operating properly.One of the main reasons you'd want this unit over your other braking system options out there is that it doesn't require you to tap into any of the wiring or components on your vehicle. There's no tapping into the vacuum lines on the engine or the wiring for your tail lights or anything. You actually just tap into the diode harness, which is not part of your factory wiring, and there's no other connections other than the cable here, which you do have to mount to the floor. So you will have to drill a small hole. But this way, if you have any warranty repairs done on your vehicle, you have the peace of mind knowing that this system isn't going to affect any of either the circuits or engine components on your vehicle.First, we'll get our operating unit into its position.

It's just going to sit onto your floor. Located on the bottom, you'll have some adjustable feet, so you'll want to adjust those until it sits nice and level. Once you've got that adjusted out, we need to hook our cylinder to our pedal here. The pedal bracket that goes onto your pedal, the little clamp here, is going to be separate when it comes in your package. So you simply loosen up the brass nut here, spread it open, put it on your pedal, clamp it together, and tighten it down to get that set up.You can then use the pin that's pre-installed into the cylinder to connect it to your pedal bracket, and the cotter pin here to lock it in place. Once you've got those set up, you've got the correct distance now set between your pedal and the unit, double check your level. Make sure everything looks good. And then we can install our tether. The tether is going to clip onto the cylinder portion here, at the bracket located here near our operating unit. And the cable needs to run up to the firewall on the vehicle. We want to try and keep it as perpendicular to the firewall as possible, keeping it nice and straight line with our operating unit.And it's going to install beneath the carpet using a self-tapping screw, by just threading the anchor pin into the firewall. Once you've got the anchor set, pull the slack out of your cable, and use a 4 mm Allen key to tighten down the set screw on the back to hold the cable in place. You want to make sure you do have a little bit of slack in it, because we don't want it to keep force on our brake pedal, keeping it applied. You just want to have it kind of like we have here. You see it looks fairly taut, but when you touch it, it does have a little bit of slack.Now you'll need to hard wire the harness into your vehicle. It plugs in here on the top of the unit. So, these are the two components that are going to be hard wired in. You'll have your harness, as well as your tether that's going to stay on the vehicle. As you can see, we can just unclip from our unit with the carabiner here at the back, unplug it here, and this assembly does come out. But you've got to keep in mind, it will not work on another vehicle without these components.Our wiring here, we went ahead and fed it through the firewall. There's a grommet located behind your parking brake pedal, there. So, we just pushed it through the grommet, so it came out on the firewall. The harness we routed through the grommet, we ran to the front of the vehicle and then down to where our diode wiring is. Your typical diode wiring is going to have green, yellow, brown, and then maybe a white wire for ground. The harness that comes for your braking system that we routed here has yellow, green, and black. The yellow and green wires, you'll just cut your diode wiring and wire those in line.It does come with quick splices that you can use. Instead of cutting them, you can just quick splice onto the wire. This is what you'll receive in the kit to quick splice onto. It simply just slides over your existing wire, and you poke your wire from your harness into one side, and just squeeze that together. We upgraded ours to Heat Shrink Butt Connectors to keep our any moisture, to ensure a long-lasting connection.The black wire on the harness is going to connect to the blue wire from your breakaway switch. Our breakaway switch is mounted on the front of the vehicle. The breakaway switch comes with your Delta Force. It's installed onto the bracket that came with the base plate for your breakaway switch. There's two wires on the back of your breakaway switch. The blue, which we just showed you, connects to the black wire from the harness that goes to your Delta Force Operating Unit. The orange and black wire will go to your battery positive circuit.Now, there are a couple of different ways to hook this up. Your Delta Force does come with the necessary components to set up a charge line that will charge the battery on the vehicle when the motor home has its tail lights turned on. Now, our customer already has a charge line installed, so we will not be installing the components that come with the kit for the charge line that comes with the Delta Force, because the one that they have already installed charges all the time, so it charges better than the one that comes with the Delta Force that only charges when the tail lights are on.And that completes our installation of SMI's Delta Force Portable Supplemental Braking System on our 2017 Ford F-150.

The original install was fairly easy. But I found the adjustments difficult to perform and extremely sensitive. A couple of times it locked up the brakes on the tow vehicle and I dragged it a good distance. The only way I could fine tune the braking force was to have someone drive the coach while I sat in the passenger side of the tow vehicle and adjusted the system. I got it to work and used it on a trip from San Diego to Yosemite and up to the Reno area. 336379

I really like the size of the system. It is extremely easy to store and I can use it in my toad for three long days of towing without it running my toad's battery down. I had a couple of problems. First the gain adjustment is not fine enough to set the brake system just right (more a personal preference). The radio range for the monitor in the coach would not reach my toad at about 40' away. I had to route the antenna wire to the rear of my coach to get reception. After about 8 months of use it started leaking. I contact SMI and they repaired the leak and even upgraded the radio system to a 900mhz system to fix my range issue at no cost. SMI backs their warranty claims and put the extra effort to make sure the customer is happy. 349660
