Video Transcript for Leer Soft Tonneau Cover Installation - 2021 Ram 2500

Hey everybody, how's it going Today we're gonna be going over and showing you how to install the Leer soft tonneau cover here on our 2021 Ram 2500. For starters, this tonneau cover here is available for both the short 6-1/2 foot bed as well as the long eight foot bed model. So no matter what your bed length is, there's gonna be an option for you. So there's really two main types of tonneau covers. We have soft tonneau covers, which is what this is and we also have hard tonneau covers. So soft tonneau covers what these do great is number one, they're usually more cost effective than a hard tonneau cover.

And they're also easier to use and install. A hard tonneau cover on the other hand is gonna be more secure. So it really just depends on what your needs are. If you have a lot of expensive tools in your truck bed here that you're worrying about others getting to, I would probably opt for a hard tonneau cover because there's no getting around the fact that with a soft tonneau cover I could just come over here with a knife or razor knife, just cut a big old hole on that. And pretty much just get anything I wanted out of there.

So unfortunately, the soft tonneau covers don't provide the best security, but for everything else and in between they're gonna be great for you. So this cover is very easy to use. When we need to get something out of the truck bed that's a little bit further up there towards the cab or if we just need to haul some of those larger items, we can easily break down this cover here to allow for that. So we're just gonna go ahead and lower our tailgate. And then underneath here, it's kinda hard to see but there's two kind of little pinchers.

Once you grab those, that's gonna release the locks. And if we push up, it should just unlock everything. Just like that. And begin rolling it back towards the cab here. So there are hook and loop fasteners along the side of the cover here.

It just sort of gives it some better security. You wanna make sure you try to roll it up as best as you can. You don't necessarily have to go from one side to the other but you do need to be aware of how it's sort of rolling up over there just so we get a nice compact roll here. So we're gonna roll it all the way back here. And once we get to this point here, there's actually some cam buckle straps built into this cover here so we can secure it in this position here. So here's that cam buckle strap we talked about. There's actually gonna be a little fastener for it on the back of the cover there. Just simply go ahead and click that in. And then you can pull your strap tight here to get a little bit of a more compact roll. So when we're traveling around town or driving out in the highway with our cover open, you wanna make sure it's secure here. But so long it is secure, there's no issues whatsoever having the cover open while you're driving down the road. And again, if you're one of those people who needs the haul larger items such as a couch or refrigerator, you could easily break this cover down here so you still have your entire truck that to work with. And then when we're ready to use it again, just go ahead and undo those buckles and we can begin unraveling it towards the tailgate. Pretty simple. And then when we get to this point here, what we're gonna do is we're gonna close our tailgate. Make sure you're lined up on both sides there. And all we need to do is just put some pressure downward to lock it in place. That's it. Now we'll just go ahead and press down the hook-and-loop fasteners here on the sides to create a nice watertight seal. So this is a relatively low profile cover. What I mean by that is it really doesn't stick up above the bed more than an inch or so. And having a low profile cover and not only looks a little bit better, it's also gonna help with our aerodynamics because a tonneau cover in general should improve your gas mileage. Although it's not gonna be a ton, you can still notice a couple mile per gallon increases per tank here, just because we don't have that wind coming back hitting the tailgate. As soon as it comes over the cab there, it's just gonna glide off the top of our tonneau cover. So we got a nice black vinyl tarp here. This does have a lifetime warranty there but if you we're to rip it yourself that obviously wouldn't be covered under warranty, but it is covered from any manufacturing defects. And as long as you keep them clean, they do still shine for years to come. It's gonna look new as long as you take care of it. Regards to installation, it really doesn't get much better than this. There's no modifying to the vehicle whatsoever. There's only a couple clamps per side. I would say, give yourselves around an hour to two, just some basic common tools. Everything actually already comes with our kit there. So it's definitely something you can throw on the driveway at home by yourself. No problem at all. So the first step of our installation begins up here in the truck bed. So what you're gonna do is you're gonna take the bulkhead seal that comes in your kit and you're gonna apply it to the header here portion of your bed. Now, if you have a bare painted surface like we do here, you wanna make sure you go ahead and get some soap and water and clean that off. Make sure there isn't any dirt under there, that way our adhesive here sticks properly but you'll just go ahead and peel the back off. Butt it up against the edge here. You wanna make sure it's on the inside edge of the bed here. You don't wanna install it out here. You do wanna make sure it's right here. And then we'll just go ahead and set this into position. Start at one side and work your way over to the other. And you can cut off any extra that you may have. We're gonna grab one of our side rails here. Now these are side specific. If you take a look at this mechanism here, this is gonna be back towards the tailgate. We're gonna take one of our clamps here and you can see how we have a groove on this side, which is flat. And then we have a little groove built in here. So this is gonna bite. This groove part is gonna bite on the inside of the bench here. And then this part here is actually gonna slide into our rail. So there's gonna be a little opening in the end of the rail here. You're just gonna take that clamp there and just slide it in like so. So we're gonna have three clamps per side. So I'm gonna go ahead now and just slide in all three of our little clamp assemblies here. Now, once we have in position, we'll go ahead and set our rail on the side of the bed. So if you having a friend here who can help you hold this rail on the vehicle, that's certainly gonna make things a little bit easier, but you can still do it by yourself. And basically what we need to do is you have to install this as an angle to get all your clamps to sit on there properly. So you can see I'm hooking it at the bottom here and then I'm coming up and over the edge of the bed rail and I'm gonna push it as far forward as I can. So now to hold everything in place here, we're gonna have a set screw on the bottom. We're gonna begin tightening this for one of our clamps here closest to the end of the tailgate. So you're just gonna be tightening this by hand by now. You're not gonna use any tools just yet and you're gonna tighten it as much as you can by hand here. And then I'm gonna repeat that same process for our two other clamps. So for this one in this center here, we're just gonna line it up pretty much with the center of our wheel well. And again, we'll just begin hand tightening that set screw on the bottom. We're gonna take the Allen key that comes in your kit and you're gonna begin tightening down this center bolt here. So I've got that one tight. I'm gonna go ahead and work my way down the line here until I get to the last clamp. And then once we get these center bolt tight, we can go ahead and remove these set screws on the bottom. So now that we have one side done, we can go ahead and just repeat these same few steps over on the other side. You're gonna get your tonneau cover onto your tailgate here. Get it into position to be installed on the vehicle. But before we do that, we wanna flip it over, come to either ends here. You can see this is actually the header part. So this is what it's secured at the front there of the bed behind the cab. And what we're gonna do is you're gonna get an assembly in your kit that looks like this. So you're gonna take that bolt off there and then what we're gonna do once we get it off there is, we're gonna place it into one of the channels here on this little header part. So you're gonna see, we have this like little plastic end cap and there's gonna be a groove in there. So basically we just take this bolt, stick it in through the channel, and then sort of maneuver in position over here on the side. So we wanna do that on each side. So now that we have our bolts in place, we'll go ahead and take our cover and set it in position here. So we do have this little flap here on the front of the cover. We wanna make sure that's not tucked in underneath. So we'll just go ahead and pull this out now. So it's resting on the header of our bed. Next we're gonna secure the cover to our rails using those bolts that we just installed and the hardware that came pre-installed on those bolts. So you'll place a flat wash over there first, a split lock washer, this little thumb screw here, and then we have this part as well. So go ahead and snug that up now. And then once I get this side knocked out, come back and do that same thing on the other side. Now we will unbuckle our cover on both sides here and begin unraveling it to the tailgate. So now once we have our cover rolled all the way back towards the tailgate, we can go ahead and try to cinch the locking mechanism here. So basically this part here just lines up with that little groove there on the side rails. And then in theory, we should just be able to push down to lock it in place. Ours, however, is a little bit too tight. So we need to make some adjustments. Basically, I'm just gonna roll this back up. And those bolt that we just secured earlier, I'm gonna loosen those, that way I can pull the cover back more towards the tailgate. Now, if the cover is too loose, you may need to tighten that. And the opposite of that is basically just gonna be pushing the cover more towards the cab of the truck. So let's go ahead and do that now. See if we can get a nice and tight fit here. Obviously not so tight though that we can't close the cover. So now that we have everything nice and secure here and I've ensured the tonneau cover can latch properly. I'm gonna go ahead and remove it just the back part. That way I can close my tailgate here. And then we'll, resecure the cover again. And basically, this is just making sure this little flap here rest over the edge of our tailgate. So we get a nice watertight seal But once we have that done, that's gonna do it today for our look and installation of the Leer soft tonneau cover here on our 2021 Ram 2500..
