The hatch-style Craftec tonneau cover is sleek and simple to use, and it removes in three quick steps to give you the option of full truck-bed use.

Step 1

Lifting hatch cover

Lift hatch cover.

Step 2

Close-up of gas strut and raised cover

Using a small, flathead screwdriver, unclip the gas shocks from the truck-bed rail mounts and raise the cover.

Step 3

Cover removes for storage

Raise cover to full vertical position, then slide it out of the C-channel groove and to the side. The cover's light weight and innovative design enable you to remove it single-handed in under a minute.

Tonneau in open position

Gas struts make opening Craftec's soft vinyl tonneau practically effortless - you can even open it with one hand.
They also hold the cover upright and out of the way while you load or unload your gear.

Tonneau's aluminum frame without vinyl covering

Sturdy, heavy-gauge aluminum framing provides the tough but lightweight backbone that gives the Craftec truck-bed cover its strength.

Close-up of twist-latch securing tonneau for travel

Hidden under the back of the closed cover are two sturdy latches that rotate into place to secure the tonneau to the truck-bed rails, providing a travel-tight fit. Once you have secured the latches and locked the tailgate, the latches - and your cargo - are safely hidden away under the cover.

Close-up of weatherstripping

Weatherstripping is attached to the underside of the vinyl cover, rather than to the truck bed, keeping out water and protecting the paint on your truck-bed side rails.

Close-up of vinyl cover

The 18-ounce, black vinyl cover is UV resistant, and its edges are bound for a smooth, clean look.

Video Transcript for Craftec Hatch-Style Tonneau Cover Installation - 1999 Ford Ranger

Today, in our 1999 Ford Ranger, we'll be installing the Craftec Hatch-Style Tonneau cover, Part Number 153923. The first step of our install will be assembling the tonneau cover. Starting with the number 2 and four side rails, we'll take them and set them down with the stickers budding towards each other. To secure the two rails together, we'll use the four inch aluminum splice and feed it halfway in to the 3-1/4 inch channel on both rails. Then we'll take the 6 inch splice brace and the pre-drilled holes and put it over the top of the 4 inch splice. Next, we'll take the 516s bolts and secure the splice brace to the splice and secure the two rails together.

Next, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process for rail number 3 and 5. Now, we'll have the length of our side rails assembled. We'll go ahead and slide the first bow receiver into the rail number 3. Note: The round part of the bow receiver slides into the round portion of the rail then we'll take the square nut slides and feed them into the 3-1/4 inch channel. Next, we'll slide the cover shock mount clamp into the three quarter inch channel making sure that the ball part of the stud points to the inside.

Note: We will not be tightening any of this pieces at this time. Now, we'll go ahead and slide the second bow receiver into the rail following the same procedure as our first bow receiver. Next, we'll go ahead and evenly space the bow receivers on the rail. Quick tech tip: I recommend to use a tape measure as it will assist in evenly spacing the bow receivers. Now, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the other side the 2 and 4 rail.

Now, with the shock mount and bow receivers into the side rails, our next step will be installing the handle into each rail. We'll take the handle and slide it into the 3-1/4 inch portion of the number 4 and 5 rail. We'll go ahead and snug it down to keep it from moving, but note our final adjustments will be made later. Next, we're ready to install the number 1 rail into the 2 and 3 rails. We'll be using the 90-degree, 3-1/4 inch square aluminum corner braces that will fit into the 3-1/4 inch channels.

We'll secure them with the 516s threaded rolling bolts. Note: These are the corner brackets without thumb screws. Next, we'll slide the bow on to the bow receivers. Note: The bows are numbered, lower numbers are placed at the front of the cap, higher numbers are placed at the rearly cap. Starting with 7, we'll go ahead and put it into position. Noting the arc in the bow will face up as we're assembling the tonneau cover upside down. In relative to the cover, we'll face the arc of the bow down as we're assembling it here. Now, we'll go ahead and prepare the rear rail for assembly. We'll first install the pull strap. We'll secure the pull strap inside the 3-1-4 inch rail using the 516s bolt and square nut provided. Then, we'll install the 90-degree corners. Note: This is where we will be using the corner brackets with thumb screws. We'll slide it in to the end rail and then the end rail into the side rail. Next, we'll go ahead and test fit the hinge assembly into the front rail. The front rail will have a C channel that will meet up with the hinge assembly. The C channel will look like this once installed. Now, we'll go ahead and test fit our assembly to the vehicle. It's a good idea to get an extra set of hands to help you move the frame assembly into position. Now, with our frame assembly set into position and centered on the vehicle, I'll go ahead and use a paint marker and mark the location. Now, we'll go ahead and remove the hinge assembly from the front rail. Next, we'll go ahead and install the L brackets sliding the four inch portion of the L bracket into the hinge assembly. Then, we're ready to install the hinge assembly to the vehicle. Before we attempt to adhere it to the vehicle, we'll need to make sure it's thoroughly clean. Using the alcohol swab provided, we'll go ahead and clean the front portion of the truck bed where our hinge assembly will sit. Now, with the bed cleaned, we'll go ahead and remove the two-way adhesive from the hinge assembly and secure it into position. Note: We'll be using the marked location to set our hinge assembly back in to the proper spot keeping our tonneau cover frame assembly square with the body of the truck. Once firmly pressed into place, we'll then take the L brackets and slide them out against the side bed rails. We'll adjust the clamp under the edge of the bed and on the L bracket and secure it to the truck bed. This will add as additional supports to securing our hinge assembly to the truck bed. Next, we'll move back to our frame assembly. We'll go ahead and install the plastic corners on each corner of the framework. Note: That the notched corners go to the front of the frame. We'll be securing these to the frame assembly using the 516s threaded rolling bolts. Now, we're ready to go ahead and slide the vinyl cover into position. Taking the front edge with the rolled beam and sliding into the front rail. Now with the covers slid into position, we'll go ahead and install the D-shaped rubber weather seals on the front corner. We'll remove the two-way adhesive starting on one edge of the plastic corner and working our way to the other edge. Next, we'll need to position the shock clamps -- one on the edge of the bed and the other that we've already installed under the tonneau cover framework. Following the manufacturer's instructions, we'll go ahead and measure out from the indicated portions in the instructions set the shock clamps into position and secure them. Now, once we have the mounts firmly secured into position, we'll go ahead and install the shock on to the mounts. Note: It's recommended to go ahead and work the shock several times before installing. This will help to lubricate the rod and seals. Now, with both shocks installed, we'll slowly lower the tonneau cover to make sure that it goes down nice and smoothly. Next, we'll need to go ahead and reposition the tonneau cover handles, we previously installed and just snug it into position. For this application, we'll also need to adjust the height of the handle. We'll go ahead and remove it from the side rail, remove the spacers above the handle and then the spacers below. Then, we'll go ahead and re-install the handle and all the spacers. Next, we can go ahead and re-install the handle on to the rail. As you can see, this will now allow us to turn the handle fitted under the side of the bed rail giving us a nice snugged fit securing the tonneau cover to the vehicle. Next, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process on the opposite side. Now, that'll complete the install of our new Craftec Hatch-Style Tonneau Cover. Let's go ahead and show you how to use it. First, here's what it'll look like in its closed position then to open the cover, we'll simply lower the tailgate, reach inside and turn the handle on one side and then repeat the same process on the opposite side. Then, we'll go ahead and let the shocks extend the cover up. Then to close the cover, we'll simply go ahead and grab the top of the cover pulling it backed down against the bed rails and then resecure it with the handles. We'll go ahead and close the tailgate and this will complete the install of our Craftec Hatch-Style Tonneau Cover, Part Number 153923 on our 1999 Ford Ranger.

Love the cover. After some minor modifications it's great. Modification #1: put some screws vertically and horizontally through the bracket that stays fastened to the bed. Double sided tape will NOT hold it together. Modification #2: before installation, call craftech and get 20lb shocks. The pair of 40lbs that come with it are waaaayyyyy too heavy. I bent my cover trying to close it with them on. Lastly, the bows could stand to have a little more "bow" to them. But overall it is an awesome cover and so far craftech has taken care of anything I have needed. It's exactly what I wanted. 657877

The cover went on my 1977 El Camino the original snap on cover recently died this cover looks like a great replacement and now I should not have any snow to deal with. I looked at the instructions which seemed like they could be used however I found a step by step video oline that made it real easy to install. Thank You for a great fitting tonneau bed cover. 585162

It worked for the first two months, then kept flying off... The last time it flew off, it has a bent frame and turned cover. After a eighteen wheeler ran over it... So I rated it as POOR, you got your money and I got no Tonneau Cover. " THANKS" !!! 429473

In general I am quite pleased with this product. It was relatively inexpensive and I was able to assemble and install by myself. It has held up well over a period of one year. My only disappointment is the fact that it does not fit between the stake holes as it was discribed. It covers each hole halfway 569507

The cover fits great and looks good, we have had it on for a year now and still looks and works like it is new. The only complaint is the assembly instructions. Very hard to follow had to call several times for technical assistance. Even took it to a friend who runs an auto repair shop for help, and they agreed instructions were poorly written. Priced well and good quality product. 501024

It looks nice and is light weight. But it always comes loose in the back. the handles will not stay tight and if you tighten them it bends the frame. So I use bunggy cords to hold it down. 480145

This bed cover is holding up excellent and looks as good as it did the first day. My gas filler is inside the bed this tilt up is God sent item that saves me a ton of time. I have always had a snap button cover before. Now it is a simple 30 second job. 463145

Review from a similar Craftec Hatch Style in Tonneau Covers

Used on a 2016 Chevy Silverado The cover is very good, not perfect. I get a little bit of water at the front corners of the bed. I think it may be due to the design; the corners of the cover are not completely flush with the frame. The gasket is in place but there is not enough down pressure at the corner to keep it tight enough to prevent seepage. Also the wind as you drive may force the corner of the cover up slightly. Not a huge deal; I may just put a small piece of electrical tape at the corner and no one will notice. Not worth returning the cover over. The other thing I want to mention is how hard it is to put the frame together. The instructions and diagrams are not very clear. It took around 4 hours to get the frame built and the cover fitted. Again, the issue is not insurmountable. Just don't expect to have the cover in place in 20-30 minutes or whatever time it is they advertise. 443263

Review from a similar Craftec Hatch Style in Tonneau Covers

I like my Tonneau Cover. I go fishing up north 4 or5 times a year and it keeps things dry and out of sight. And I can sleep under it if I need to. It is great for hiding packages when shopping. Easy to put on and off ( I take it off when heavy snow is expected so it will not cave in. We can get several inches of wet, heavy snow in a few hours. And it needs to come off to carry taller items in the bed.) Had to move my top bed rails out to make them both fit, but I like the way it looks. Definately one of my better purchases. 266970

The assembly instructions were easy to follow. I assembled cover on my carpeted living room floor, installed the brackets, and it fit my 1972 SS El Camino perfectly. Very light weight, takes 2 people to install, but I can take it off myself. Have had it on the car for a year now, with no problems. I use high UV boat seat protectant to shine it up for car shows. protects and beautifys. Highly recommend, and 10 times lighter than a fiberglass hard cover. 250849

The cover shipped quickly. I believe it was 2 days after ordering it was at my door. This cover was very easy to piece together and install onto my 2010 Colorado Quad cab. Definately well worth the price!! Not only does the product fit my truck perfectly, it also looks good too. The ability to lock the cover from the interior of the bed is a huge bonus when trying to keep your items safe. If you are looking for a cover to purchase I highly recommend this one. 51975
