Westlake Radials

This radial ply tire from Westlake is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords for increased durability. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Westlake Standard Tread Close-Up

The standard tread on this tire has solid, continuous ribs, and there are very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. This tire is designed for use on trailers, so it doesn't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Westlake Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - LHWL401 Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the Westlake ST235/80R16 radial trailer tire, in a load range E. Now, this radial tire's made of high quality rubber, which is reinforced by layers of steel and polyester belts. It is great for highway use, the tread design on it will help maximize road contact and traction. They do use a nylon overlay, to help prevent tread separation. The other nice thing, is they do use tread wear indicators, like you'll see on your passenger car tires. If you look on the shoulder, every so often, you'll see a TWI, for tread wear indicator, and it's about every 12-15".

Right where that says TWI, if you go right to the tread grooves, you'll see a raised area, it looks like a speed bump in the grooves, and that tread wear indicator's at 2/32 tread depth. What that tells you, is when this tire wears down, the the tread wear indicator would be a straight line all the way across the tread, it means your tire is worn out at 2/32. Basically, as your tire's wearing, if you look right where the tread wear indicator is designated, it'll give you an idea of how much tread wear you still have remaining on your tire. This tire is a special trailer tire design, it will couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. This is created specifically for trailers, it's not intended for use on any other vehicles. This tire will meet the Department of Transportation specifications.

A few specs on it, it is designed to fit on the wheel sizes of a 16" x 6" wide, 16" x 6 1/2", 16" x 7", and a 16" x 7 1/2". The tire size, which is stamped on the sidewall ST, for special trailer, 235/80R16, the are means it's a radial design tire. The section width on this would be 9.3", overall diameter, from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 30.8". This tire is a load range E, which means it's a 10 ply rated tire. The maximum load capacity on this tire when used in a single tire application is 3,520 pounds at 80 PSI, and if it's used in a dual tire application, the capacity is 3,080 pounds at 80 PSI. One last thing, on a lot of your new trailer tires, they are coming with a speed rating stamped on them now.

The speed rating is always designated by a letter, and it's usually right after the size, if you look at the size of the tire right here, right after, you'll see 2 numbers, which are the load index, and then after that is the letter L. Speed rating L will mean 75 mile per hour speed rating. That should do it for the review on the Westlake ST235/80R16 radial trailer tire, in a load range E.

As always I found exactly what I need on etrailer quickly and easily. Thank you for a very user-friendly web site. I got what I ordered and it arrived one day ahead of schedule. I can't say much about the tire until I put some miles on it. I think NM Hway 285 south of Carlsbad is what spelled doom for the one I'm replacing so we shall see. 308204

15000 miles and no problems with "G" rated Westlakes. They were installed by the OEM when we purchased the 42', 16000lb, 5th Wheel. I have added TPMS and so far, no worries. The reason we ordered (2) new tires, we had a dual leaf spring failure and the tires didn't fail, but both rubbed on the frame and we are replacing them out of caution. I've owned China Bombs on previous 5th Wheels and like many, we suffered miserably the consequences of cheap tires. We started to go with Sailuns instead, but have had such great performance with these, we decided to stay brand loyal. RAH! 620215

e-trailer was great. The trailer tires I had ordered were on back order, and they took the time to call me to see if another product could be shipped, in case I was in a hurry. Was under no time constraints, so I stayed with my original order, but just having an employee take the initiative, that is client service. My last tires from etrailer lasted 3 years of daily use. Although I have yet to put many miles on these I expect excellent results. Lisa D. guided me through the selection process. This Westlake model is a better fit (205) than my previous tire (215) yet offeres the same 8-ply & D load rating. My local stores still think they don’t make radial trailer tires! I can’t recommend etrailer highly enough! 569338

Me and my family went on a 5000 mile round trip vacation. We encountered a lot of different road conditions without a problem and the tires are still currently being used on the camper. The only hitch I had was a very long lead time from the time of ordering the tire and the delivery. Seems like it was a couple months which was frustrating when I was trying to prepare for this trip. As you can see from the picture Montana mud aint no joke. 610593

When a nail punctured the sidewall of my trailer tire I found myself in need of a quick replacement. With no local business able to provide an exact replacement, a web search quickly yielded information about etrailer and their quality of service. After ordering, I had the tire in a very short time and I’m back on the road! Great support, and always kept informed that my order had been placed, shipped, and delivered. Can’t ask for much more than that. 510874

Made in China has a connotation of poor quality at best, most of the time junk. These Westlake tires are made in China however to the contrary they are top-quality. Don’t hesitate in using these as replacement! Plus buy them from etrailer.com, for first class service, call and asked for Chris W!! 549042

Seems like it's a quality tire. Only issue I have that gave me a slight reservation about quality/durability is the extremely obvious seam where the tread was mated end to end to itself during construction. I don't recall ever seeing this on a good quality tire before. 560662

Do you have a question about this Tires and Wheel?

  • Can Westlake 235/80R16 Trailer Tires be Replaced with Westlake 235/85R16 Tires
  • The 235/85R16 size Westlakes, part # LHWL410, are an inch larger in diameter compared to the 235/80R16s part # LHWL401. So you need to make sure there's an extra half inch of clearance between the tire and the underside of the fender. You want a total of at least 3 to 4 inches of clearance. Another thing to consider is the larger tires have a maximum psi of 110 pounds and trailer tires should always be inflated to their max. This is important because the valve stems on your wheels...

  • What is the Correct PSI Rating for ST235/80R16 Trailer Tires
  • The psi rating on the sidewall of all trailer tires is the cold PSI rating, meaning the tire should be inflated to that psi rating before the tire heats up. If your tire says 80 psi, then the manufacturer intended for that tire to be inflated to 80 PSI before you hit the road. If you start out at a lower pressure, then the biggest concern that you will have is that the weight rating of the tire will also decrease. Unfortunately, Goodyear is the only trailer tire manufacturer that lists...

  • Will Going to a Tire with Higher Ply Rating Prevent Blow Outs on a Livestock Trailer
  • The main reasons why trailer tires blow out is heat generated from under inflated tires and overloading the tires. Trailer tires should be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. A tire in the same size but with a higher ply rating would be able to combat some of that but can eventually have the same issues. So when inflating trailer tires be sure to go to the max psi. With that said the 14 ply tires will definitely hold up better than the 10 ply. For an ST235/80R16 tire,...

  • Recommended Replacement Tires For 2016 Forest River Cardinal 3825FL
  • The ST235/80R16E is a tire size that many manufacturers use, so it isn't the size that is an issue on the 2016 Forest River Cardinal 3825FL but rather the manufacturer or people not taking proper care in following the load or speed ratings on the OEM tires. We have many really nice tires in this size, so I wouldn't hesitate to purchase the trailer based on OEM tires. I recommend the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # LHWL401. This tire is rated for 3520 lbs at...

  • Recommendation to Replace 235/80-16 Tires on Trailer
  • As you mentioned in your question, the highest load rating tire we have in the 235/80-16 tire size is a Load Rating E. If you would like to stick to the size you currently have mounted, I highly recommend looking at the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire # LHWL401. This radial tire has a maximum load of 3,520 pounds at 80 psi and an excellent maximum speed rating of 75 mph. The thing that sets this particular tire apart is the length and content of its warranty. This tire not only...

  • Replacement ST235/80R16 Tires With Higher Load Capacity For 7,000 Lb Axles
  • It is not a good idea to go down in load capacity when it comes to tires. I am not sure what the fully loaded weight of your trailer is but if your axles are rated for 7,000 lbs the Goodyear Endurance Tires part # 724858519A are not rated properly for your setup which could lead to a blow out over time. I recommend a higher capacity Westlake 235/80-16 tire and wheel combination part # LHAW209 with a 3,520-lb max load at 80 psi. The Westlake tire will at least match your axle capacity...

  • Recommended 235/80R16 Tires to Replace LT Tires on 5th Wheel Trailer
  • I definitely recommend upgrading the LT tires on your trailer to Special Trailer (ST) tires. Special Trailer tires are specifically designed to handle higher loads and air pressures. This is because they are constructed with thicker and stronger sidewalls when compared to standard automobile or truck tires. I do not recommend continuing to use LT tires on your trailer. I recommend looking at the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire # LHWL401. This is the same size tire that you...

  • Recommended Tire Load Rating for Triple Axle Toy Hauler
  • Loaded you will most likely be at around 17,300-17,500 lbs, so for your triple axle toy hauler will have a minimum of 2330 lbs riding on each tire. I recommend going with a load E or higher rated tire to be safe and account for load shifting. If you have 15 inch wheels, I recommend the Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # LHWL304. These tires have a 5 year warranty and 2 year roadside assistance. They are rated for 2830 lbs each at 80 psi and have a speed rating...

  • Do I Use Ply Rating or Load Range to Find the Correct Trailer Tires for my E-Z Toy Hauler
  • The ply rating of a tire is no longer used to determine its weight capacity. As tire manufacturing technology has advanced through time, manufactures have been able to use less plies and still maintain the same weight capacity. Therefore, the industry standard for trailer tires in regards to weight capacity is now referred to as "Load Range". The alphabetic load range rating of a trailer tire refers to how much weight one tire can safely withstand. The highest weight capacity we have...

  • 235/80R16 Trailer Tire vs 235/85R16 Light Truck Tire
  • You never want to change out trailer tires for passenger vehicle tires. Trailer tires have a more rigid sidewall which helps to accommodate heavy loads and keep the tires running cooler. Passenger tires, like Light Truck tires, have a more flexible sidewall which helps to provide a more comfy ride but do not perform like trailer tires do on a trailer. I recommend going with the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire # LHWL401 since you sound like you are having trouble with blowouts....

  • Recommended 225/75R15 Tire and Wheel with 6 on 5-1/2 Bolt Pattern
  • There are quite a few options for your tire depending on your style preference with the 225/75R15 tires with 6 bolt wheel. For a basic and clean looking steel wheel option, I recommend the Westlake # LHAW124. This is a silver mod style wheel rated for 2,830 lbs and speeds of up to 75 mph. The Lion's Head tires and wheels offer the best warranty with a one year wheel, 5 year tire, and 2 year roadside assistance warranty. I've linked the page to all your options. The 2,830 is the...

  • Yes, both tire sizes you mentioned 235/80R16 and 235/85R16 fit the same wheel size so you can make the swap if you want. For that size the part # LHWL401 is the best option. This tire has a capacity of 3,520-lb max load at 80 psi, a speed rating of 75 mph and a 2 year roadside assistance program. If your RV or trailer has a flat tire, call the help line and a technician will come change the flat for you. You can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year from anywhere...

  • Recommended 235/80R16 Trailer Tires for Fifth Wheel Trailer
  • For your 2016 Cougar Fifth Wheel trailer I recommend using the Westlake # LHWL401, which are ST235/80R16 tires with a load range of E. They have a load capacity of 3,520 lbs at 80 psi; you will want to make sure your trailer tires are always filled to this psi in order to make sure you get the best performance and keep your tires from potential blowouts. A lower air pressure will lessen the tire's capacity, cause the sidewall to heat up and possibly blow. This tire has a speed limit...

  • What Causes Trailer Tire Failure and Recommendation for Size 235/80R16
  • Typically trailer tires fail for the following 3 reasons. 1) Keep your tires fully inflated to the maximum pressure listed on the tire sidewall. Unlike a passenger car tire, trailer tires feature a stronger sidewall designed to provide greater stability when under load. Failure to fully inflate the tires can cause heat build-up, leading to premature tire failure. Also, a tire only will only realize its specified load rating when inflated to its maximum psi shown on the tire. 2) Do...

  • What is the Correct Tire Pressure for a 235/80R16 Trailer Tire?
  • For maximum effectiveness, trailer tires need to be inflated to max psi, which will be somewhere on the tire's sidewall. For example, a load range E tire such as the Westlake ST235/80R16, # LHWL401, has a load capacity of 3,520 lbs when inflated to 80 psi.
