Westlake Radials

This radial ply tire from Westlake is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords for increased durability. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Westlake Standard Tread Close-Up

The standard tread on this tire has solid, continuous ribs, and there are very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. This tire is designed for use on trailers, so it doesn't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Westlake Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - LHWL304 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Westlake ST22575R15 radial trailer tire in a load range E. Now, this radial tire's made of a high quality rubber, which is reinforced by layers of steel and polyester belts. It is great for highway use. The tread design will maximize road contact and traction. They do use a nylon overlay around the whole tread, which prevents tread separation. They do use tread wear indicators on this tire, like you'll see on your passenger car tires.

What that is is if you look on the shoulder every so often you'll see a TWI listing. What that means, right where that is, if you go to the tread grooves where that is, you'll see a raised area in each groove; almost looks like a speed bump. That tread wear indicator's at two thirty seconds tread now. What that does, it tells you when this tire wears down, and that tread wear indicator's a straight line across your tread, that means your tires worn out at two thirty seconds. As your tires wearing, if you just look at where the tread wear mark is, it'll give you a good visual indication of how the tire's wearing. This is a special trailer tire design.

It will couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability, and stability of a radial tire. It is created specifically for trailers. It is not intended for use on any other vehicles. This tire does meet the Department of Transportation's specifications. Few specs on this: This tire will fit on the wheel size of fifteen by six, fifteen by six and a half, and fifteen by seven. The tire size, which is stamped on the sidewall ST, for Special Trailer, 22575R15.

The R designates that it is a radial design tire. Section width on this tire is eight-point-eight inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to top when it's inflated is twenty-eight-point-three. This tire is a load range E, which means it's a ten ply rated tire, so it does have a maximum load capacity. If used in a single tire application, it's two thousand eight hundred thirty pounds at eighty PSI.

If it's used in a dual tire application, it's two thousand four hundred and seventy pounds at eighty PSI. The last thing I do want to mention is that most all of your new trailer tires are coming with a speed rating stamped on them. It's usually listed after the tire size. If you look after that you'll see two numbers for the load index, and then a letter L. Speed rating's always designated with a letter, so this is L, which means seventy-five miles per hour. That should do it for the review on the Westlake ST22575R15 radial trailer tire, in a load range E.

Made in China has a connotation of poor quality at best, most of the time junk. These Westlake tires are made in China however to the contrary they are top-quality. Don’t hesitate in using these as replacement! Plus buy them from etrailer.com, for first class service, call and asked for Chris W!! 549042

  • What Causes Trailer Tire Blowouts
Every trailer tire has a load range rating specific to that particular tire. For example, we have the ST225/75-15 trailer tire in three load range ratings; Load Range C (2,150 lbs per tire), Load Range D (2,540 lbs per tire), and Load Range E (2,830 lbs per tire). If the gross trailer weight (GTW) exceeds the tires load range rating then the tires will be susceptible to blowouts. In addition to load range ratings, trailer tires also have a speed ratings specific to the tire. The speed...

The Castle Rock ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire part # 274-000029 and the Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire part # LHWL304 are both made by the same company, Lionshead. In short, Lionshead is the brand and Westlake/Castle Rock is the model. The main difference between these two is that the Castle Rock tire has a load range D (2,540 lbs) and the Westlake tire has a load range E (2,830 lbs) rating. The Westlake tire would give you more of a cushion for your 10,000 lb trailer so that...

If you install new 225/75-15 tires on your trailer or any trailer for that matter with a load range e rating like part # LHWL304 for example then you will need to fill them to the max psi listed on the sidewall which for this tire is 80 psi. This will allow you to retain the maximum weight capacity of 2,830 lbs per tire. In regards to ply rating, this is no longer a viable metric in today's industry when comparing tires as tire manufacturers have gone to using lighter but stronger materials...

You might verify your current rim size first. Also, the 225 will be almost an 1-1/2 inches taller than your previous tire. You'll want to make sure you have the clearance.
