The Nitrogen Advantage

Nitro Fill Logo

The NitroFill inflation process filters out oxygen to ensure that this tire-and-wheel assembly is filled with 95 to 99.9 percent pure nitrogen. Nitrogen-inflated tires maintain pressure better than tires inflated with standard air. This makes them ideal for RVs and trailers that are driven infrequently or sit in storage for long periods of time. Other benefits of consistent tire pressure are better fuel economy, improved braking and handling, decreased chance of tire failure, and longer tire life.

A tire inflated with standard air, which contains oxygen, is prone to fluctuations in pressure due to loss of air over time and ambient temperature changes. Nitrogen-inflated tires don't experience these fluctuations for a couple reasons. First, nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so they are less likely to permeate a rubber tire. Second, nitrogen is a dry gas, so it won't allow condensation to build inside the tire. A tire inflated with standard air may have moisture in it, which means it is more likely to be affected by ambient temperature.

In addition, the moisture that can collect in a tire inflated with standard air will contribute to corrosion of the wheel and deterioration of the rubber tire from the inside out. A nitrogen-inflated tire-and-wheel assembly is less likely to experience this type of decay. Less moisture in the tire also means reduced running temperatures.

If necessary, you can top off the tire with standard compressed air. But to maintain the benefits of nitrogen, the tire must be refilled with nitrogen.

Beveled Stud Holes

Beveled Stud Holes Front and Back

The stud holes on this steel wheel are beveled to ensure that the wheel stays tight against your trailer hub. This also eliminates the need to constantly retorque the lug nuts.

Westlake Radials

This radial ply tire from Westlake is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords for increased durability. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Westlake Standard Tread Close-Up

The standard tread on this tire has solid, continuous ribs, and there are very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. This tire is designed for use on trailers, so it doesn't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Westlake Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - LHAW101 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the West Lake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire in a load range E mounted on this 15" inch white modular trailer wheel, with 6 on 5/12" inch bull pattern. Now this tire wheel assembly is ideal for RVs, campers and trailers. The wheel is a modular style wheel. When we say that, it's the one that has the round holes all the way around the wheel. Has a nice white e-coat finish on the front and the back of the wheel. The wheel is very study and rust-resistant.

Now the tire that's mounted on it is a West Lake Radial Tire. It's made of high quality rubber which is reinforced by layers of steel and polyester belts. This tire is great for highway use. Has a nice tread design to give excellent traction. They do use a nylon overlay to help prevent tread separation. The tire also has a tread wear indicators like you'll see on your passenger car tires.

Basically what that is, if you look on the shoulder you will see a TWI every so often and right all the way around tire. Right where you see the TWI, there's one right here. In the tread grooves, you'll see a raised area. It almost looks like a speed bump in each tread groove. That's the tread wear indicator.

That tread wear indicator is at 2/32 tread depth. So what that tells you is when this tire wears down and it's a straight line across, that means your tire is officially worn out. Just by looking where your tread wear indicator is designated as the tire is wearing it gives you a good visual indication of how it's wearing. Now this tire wheel assembly is inflated with nitrogen. That's why they use the green valve cap on the tire stem. Just to show you that it is nitrogen filled.

Nitrogen will maintain tire pressure for longer periods than your standard air. It also helps prolong the life of the tire and even the wheel. This tire is a special trailer tire design. It will couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. This is created specifically for trailers and not intended for use on any other vehicles. Now this tire wheel assembly will come with a complimentary 24 Hour Road Side Assistance Program for one year from the manufacturer. This assembly does meet the DOT or Department of Transportation specifications. A few specs on this starting with the wheel. The diameter which is measured bead seat to bead seat so the inside is 15" inches. The width on this wheel is 6" inches wide. The bolt pattern on the wheel is a 6 on 5 1/2" inch bolt pattern. What that means, if you want to measure a bolt pattern basically on a wheel like this, it's an even number of lugs. In this case 6. All you have to do is pick one of the holes. Measure from the center of that hole directly across to the center of the hole right across from it. So this one if we put a ruler on would be 5 1/2" inches. So 6 on 5 1/2" inch bolt pattern. Wheel does use a lug size of 1/2" inch by 20. Weight capacity on just the wheel by itself is 2,850 pounds. Pilot hole diameter, the large hole here in the center of the wheel, goes over the hub on your trailer, diameter of that opening is 4.29" inches. The tire size will be stamped on the tire itself. ST for special trailer. 225/75R15. The R designates it's a radial design tire. Section width is 8.8" inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 28.3." This tire is a load range E which means it's a 10-ply rated tire so the maximum load capacity on this is 2,830 pounds at 80 psi. One last thing I want to note on this is a lot of your new trailer tires are coming with a speed rating now that's stamped on the tire. The speed rating is always listed by a letter designation. Where you'll find that is right where the tire size is. Right after it, you'll see two numbers for the load index and then at the very end the letter L. Speed rating L will mean 75 mph speed rating. That should do it for the review on the West Lake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire in a load range E on this 15" inch white modular trailer wheel with a 6 on 5 1/2" inch bolt pattern. .

Bought these west lake tires for my 5th wheel. Don't know how they will perform yet as it will be awhile before I get them installed. So I will have to follow up on that, but I will say that from order date to delivery was very quick. I've used etrailer a lot the past few years and always been pleased with their service. 499251

I purchased these Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tires ( Load Range E ) for my 35' travel trailer ( TT ) . I wanted to upgrade to a 10-ply tire to replace the OEM tires which had your standard tire that RV manufactures ship with the units. I replace my TT tires every 4 - 6 years to prevent costly blow-outs from dry rot issues no matter the wear on the tires. It's been over a year with these tires on my TT and I'm very pleased with the wear patterns and overall performance of the tires. I ordered the same tire to replace my spare tire too. etrailer.com is awesome to work with and my go-to site for the cheapest deal on RV and trailer components. Their price match policy is very easy to use and always honored with no questions asked! 660007

I had very fast shipping and I and the UPS delivery man were very impressed with each tire and rim being in individual boxes and well protected. As you mentioned, higher rated tires are not going to increase the trailer's overall capacity, but it will allow the tires to run a bit cooler since they are built to handle more than what is actually...
