Premium Trailer Contender Radials

This radial ply tire from Taskmaster is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords for increased durability. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Unlike standard trailer tire tread, which has solid, continuous ribs, the tread on these Premium Trailer Contender radials has ribs with sipes. Siping is a process in which thin grooves (or sipes) are cut into the rubber of the tire. The grooves channel water away from the tread so that the tire makes better contact with the road. This feature greatly improves traction during wet, snowy, or icy conditions.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Review of Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - PTCG80235

Today we're going to take a look at the Taskmaster Premium Trailer Contender ST 235 80R16 radial trailer tire in a load range G. Now this is a premium radial tire. It's great for highway use. It's constructed with double steel belts, double polyester cords for a nice, long life. It is bake-tested to ensure the rubber will hold up over time. And they do use a nylon tread forming belt overlay to help prevent tread separation.

They do use tread depth bars like you'll see in passenger car tires that give you a quick visual indication of how your tread is wearing. This is an extensively tested tread pattern, provides maximum traction. They do have the breaks or the sipes in the tread pattern which will channel water away from the tire to help improve traction during wet, snowy or icy conditions. This is a special trailer tire design that'll couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. And it is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles.

Does meet the DOT Department of Transportation specifications and it will exceed your Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Now this tire is designed to fit on a wheel size of 16 inch by 6 inch wide, 16 by 6 and a half inch wide and 16 by 7 inch wide. The tire size which is stamped right here on the sidewall ST for Special Trailer, 235, 80R16 the R designates that it's a radial designed tire. Section width is 9.3 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 31 inches. This is a load range G which means it's a 14 ply rated tire.

So the maximum load on this if you use it in a single tire application, it's going to be 4,080 pounds at 110 psi. If you use it in a dual tire application it's going to be 3,640 pounds at 110 psi. Tread depth on this is a very deep eleven thirty-seconds of an inch. And the maximum speed rating on this tire is 81 miles per hour. And where you would find that at is right after the size, you'll see two numbers for the load index, and then the letter M.

Speed rating M will let you know that it's an 81 mile per hour tire. But that should do it for the review on the Taskmaster Premium Trailer Contender ST 235 80R16 radial trailer tire in a load range G.

Ask the Experts about this Taskmaster Tires and Wheels

Do you have a question about this Tires and Wheel?

  • Upgrading Tire Capacity for 14000-lb Dump Trailer to Prevent Blowouts
  • You can potentially change wheel/tire size if you have the clearance but you can gain load capacity more easily by keeping your existing rims and switching to a Load Range G tire in your current size ST235/80-16. Taskmaster Load Range G radial tires # PTCG80235 have a 14-ply/4080-lb load rating per tire, compared to 3520-lbs for the E-rated tires you have now, so these will give you more safety margin and actually exceed the axle rating. This special trailer tire also has a tread wear...

  • Are Any Trailer Tires Made in the USA
  • Currently Goodyear is the few trailer tire manufacturer that makes tires in the USA. For the tire size of 235/80-16 we have the Goodyear # 724858519 which is made in the USA and a really great option that I would recommend highly for you. It has the highest speed rating a 87 mph, a great weight capacity at 3,420 lbs per tire, and has a great warranty as well. Check out the review video I attached for more info on it as well as a link to all of the Goodyear trailer tires we offer.

  • Comparing Taskmaster Provider vs Premium Contender Trailer Tires
  • The Provider ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire # PRG80235 is the premium Taskmaster tire which is demonstrated by the better tread pattern. The Premium Trailer Contender ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire # PTCG80235 is simply the "premium" version of the Taskmaster economy Contender tire. This has an adequate tread pattern but it isn't as effective as the Provider. I know the name is a little confusing but Provider is the best option in this situation and since they are in somewhat the same...

  • How Much Tire Capacity Necessary for Cougar Fifth Wheel
  • Because the pin weight of a fifth wheel is typically between 20-25 percent of its weight (as opposed to the lesser percentage from a bumper pull trailer), we typically specify that the combined capacity of the tires should cover the as-towed weight minus the fifth wheel's pin weight. So, if the 13990 lb figure you mentioned less the fifth wheel's pin weight is greater than the 13680 lb combined weight capacity of 4 of the # 724858519 Goodyear Endurance tires, they would work great for...

  • Can a G Rated Tire Be Used on the Aluminum Lynx Trailer Wheel Part # LHSL513
  • Yes, you can mount a G rated tire on the Aluminum Lynx Trailer Wheel part # LHSL513 but you will need to use a high pressure valve stem in order to do so for which I recommend the Americana Metal, Bolt-In Valve Stem part # AM20906. I would say that 99% of the time, the valve stem is the weak point in regards to the psi capacity of a trailer wheel. In order to protect these wheels from theft I also recommend using the Wheel Lock Set for 1/2" Wheel Bolts part # RG01-150. We also have the...
