Standard Trailer Tire Tread

Contender Tire Tread

The standard tread on these tires has solid, continuous ribs, and it has very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. These tires are designed for use on trailers, so they don't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Contender radials have double polyester cords and double steel belts. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - C23516E Review

Today we're going to take a look at the TaskMaster Contender ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire in a Load Range E. Now this is a radial tire which is constructed with double steel belts and double polyester cords. It's great for highway use. It does have a nylon tread-firming belt overlay to help prevent tread separation. It does have the tread bars ever so often in the grooves. Basically the tread bars is what you'll see on your passenger car tires and what it is.

It's sort of speed bump in each tread groove, and that is raised at 2/30 seconds so when your tread wears down, that bar is all the way across, that means your tire is worn out. Just by looking in that area, by using that speed bump, it gives you a good visual indicator of the tread wear of your tire. Now this is a special trailer tire design that will couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. It is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles. What I'm going to try to do here is zoom in so you can get a good shot of the tread design.

Go ahead and scan back out. Now this does meet the DOT or the Department of Transportation specifications and it does exceed the Federal Motor Vehicle safety standards. This tire is designed to fit on sixteen by six inch, sixteen by six and a half, sixteen by seven, and sixteen by seven and a half inch wheels. The tire size, which is stamped on the side, ST, for special trailer, 235/80R16 inaudible 00:01:27 that's a radial tire. Section width is 9.3 inches.

Overall diameter from the bottom to the very top when it's inflated is 30.8 inches. Now this tire is a load range E, that's a ten ply rated tire so it has a maximum load capacity in a single tire configuration of 3,520 pounds at 80 psi and if it's used in a dual tire situation, it would be a 3,080 pounds at 80 psi. That should do it for the review for the TaskMaster Contender ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire in a Load Range E.

I have about 1500 miles on these. Had them installed and balanced. They show zero wear. The first trip was from El Paso the Phoenix in July. 120 degrees at 70 mph tires did great. 516621

The product is exactly what I needed for a replacement tire for my dump trailer. $10 for mounting at the local repair shop and the tire looks great. Price was a little bit better than I could get locally and delivery was exactly when etrailer said it would be. I have pretty much resolved to purchase all of my trailer (I have 9) products through etrailer. It has always been as good of a price as I can find locally, and they deliver right to the door, most of the time for free. Easy Peasy. 477192

Looks to be overall well made, but I am not real impressed with the tread. I’m not sure it will wear well. Since this is to be a spare though, I will keep it. Also the tire was already 1 year and 9 months old when I received it. 519793

  • Recommended Replacement Tires 235/80R16 For 5th Wheel Trailer
For your replacement tires, I recommend the Taskmaster Contender ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # C23516E. These tires are rated for 3,520 lbs at 80 psi and have a speed rating of up to 81 mph. These are really nice tires at a great price point. Since you are traveling cross-country, you may want to consider the Westlake ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # LHWL401 with a weight rating of 3520 lbs at 80 psi and a speed rating of up to 75 mph. • Replacement Tire Needed for 9.5-16.5 Size Tire
The 235/80-16 sizes tires are the closest size that we have to your 9.5-16.5 tires. Your current tires should have a diameter of 30.6" and the 235/80-16 tires measure 30.9" in diameter. When it comes to clearance with your trailer you will actually be reducing that by only 0.15" since diameter is from one end of the tire directly across to the other side of the tire. If this works out for you then I recommend going with the Taskmaster Contender Radial Trailer Tire # C23516E which has...

  • Radial Tires or Bias Tires for Fifth Wheel Trailer?
Radial tires are going to be a better option for your fifth wheel trailer. They will flex more than bias tires which means more traction, stability and better overall tread wear; this also means the tires should last longer. Bias tires have a stiffer sidewall and are generally better for use in off-road applications. I recommend moving to a radial tire, and the 235/80-16 Contender # C23516E would be a great option. These tires are rated for 81 mph and have a load range of E, or 3,520...

  • Recommended PSI Level For ST235/80r16 Carlisle Trailer Tires
When I researched Carlisle trailer tires ST235/80r16, the maximum PSI is 80. But read the following recommendations before filling to this PSI. To find the recommended PSI for your Ez-Loader trailer, there maybe a plate on the trailer frame near the coupler. There should be the PSI, VIN, axle capacities, as well as the trailer tire size and Load Range recommended. Also the owners manual may list the PSI as well.

  • Recommended Tires for M101 Trailer Conversion to Camper
I don't recommend using the Toyota Tundra wheels on your trailer. Trailer tires and wheels are made differently than passenger vehicle wheels. Passenger wheels normally have an offset so the wheels sit farther under the vehicle where as trailer wheels have a zero offset. Passenger tires are also more flexible in the sidewall to account for turning and a softer ride, where trailer tires have an especially firm sidewall to help the trailer ride as intended. I appreciate your desire to...

  • How Do I Find Out The Max Heat And Max Air Pressure Of A Trailer Tire?
The max heat of your Duro DS2100 size ST235/80R16 will not be listed anywhere, but the max psi will be listed on the tire. Trailer tires should always be run at that max psi. The heat of your tire, although not rated, will be based on the load and the speed you travel. The load capacity and speed rating is listed on the tire normally with a letter rating of J-62 mph, L-75 mph, or M-81 mph and load capacity of C,D, E, etc. If there is not a speed rating printed on the tire, this will...

  • Will Inflating ST235/80R16 to Maximum PSI Cause Tire to Overheat
That is a good question but inflating a ST235/80R16 trailer tire such as the Contender # C23516E or Westlake # LHWL401 to their max psi, which is 80 for both tires, will not cause it to overheat. Trailer tire manufacturers have tested the psi and rated it to so that inflating it to the max psi takes into account the build-up of heat, and these are also radial tires, which flex more and run cooler than bias tires, which is another reason for their rated psi. You want to inflate these...

  • Do Trailer Tires Need to Have Max Pressure Inflated at All Times
With trailer tires like your ST235/80R16 you have to inflate the tire to the max pressure listed when the tire is cold to ensure you get the full weight capacity for the tire as well as prevent heat build up. I attached a help article on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

  • Should all Trailer Tires be the Same Size?
If your trailer specifies to use a load range E tire, you should use one. A load range D tire will not be able to handle the capacity of a load range E tire, so you may encounter your tires wearing unevenly; I recommend the Taskmaster # C23516E, which is a 235/80R16 tire with a load range E. It has gotten fantastic reviews from our customers who have used it and will work great for you. I've added a link to a video review of this product for you to take a look at as well.

  • What is the Difference Between Taskmaster Provider and Contender Trailer Tires
There is a quality difference between the Taskmaster Provider tire # TTWTRTM2358016E and the Taskmaster Contender, # C23516E. The biggest difference is in the tread. The Provider just has better tread. The Contender was meant as a less expensive radial alternative to a bias ply tire. If it were me I would go with the Provider # TTWTRTM2358016E because of the higher quality and tread difference.
