Standard Trailer Tire Tread

Contender Tire Tread

The standard tread on these tires has solid, continuous ribs, and it has very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. These tires are designed for use on trailers, so they don't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Contender radials have double polyester cords and double steel belts. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - C22515D Review

Today we're take a look at the Task Master Contender ST22575R15 Radio Trailer Tire in a load range D. Now this is a radial tire which is constructed with double steel belts, double polyester cords. It's great for highway use, has a nylon tread forming belt overlaid out, prevents tread separation, and it does include tread bars. If you look ever so often in the tread grooves you'll see raised areas, looks like little speed bumps. It's just like on your passenger car tires. Those are at 230 seconds tread depth.

When your tread wears down and those bars are straight across that means the tires are worn out. Just by looking at your tire wears it gives you a good visual indicator of how the tread is wearing. Now I do want to zoom in just so you'll be able to see the tread pretty good. There's the tread design you'll be getting. Go ahead and zoom back out. Now this is a special trailer tire design.

It'll couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. It is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles. This does meet the Department of Transportation specifications and it does exceed federal motor vehicle safety standards. Now this tire's designed to fit a wheel 15 6, 15 by 6 1/2, and 15 by 7 size wheels. The tire size, which is stamped on the side, ST for special trailer, 22575R15, the R designates it's a radial tire.

Now section width of this tire is going to be 8.8 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the very top when it's inflated is 28.3. Now this tire is a load range D, which means it's an 8 ply rated tire. And the maximum load capacity on this, it can be used in either a single tire or dual tire situation. In a single tire it's 2,540 pounds at 65 psi.

If you use it in a dual tire situation 2,200 at 65 psi. That should do it for the Task Master Contender ST22575R15 Radio Trailer Tire in a load range D.

In your Rockwood's tire size ST225/75-15 we have radial trailer tire options in various load ranges and some of these also have the M speed rating you're looking for. An M-rated tire is good to 81-mph. The available tires in your size, shown on the linked page, include Load Ranges C, D and E and using a higher-weight-rated tire is a great way to help reduce heat-related tire failure. You can determine the appropriate load range tire by taking the RV's GVWR (not its dry weight) and dividing...

There's no reason you couldn't go to a Load Range D 225/75R15 over a Load Range C. I'd go with the part # C22515D which has a weight capacity of 2,540-lb maximum load at 65 psi and has a speed rating of 81 mph. To get the full capacity of this tire you will need to be sure you keep the tire inflated to 65 psi at all times.

  • Operating Pressure and Temperature for Travel Trailer Tires
Trailer tires always indicate their rated psi-pressure on the sidewall. Trailer tires should ALWAYS be inflated to this COLD psi rating under all conditions. It is never appropriate to under- or over-inflate a trailer tire for any reason, such as to compensate for extremes of temperature. Any inflation pressure other than the rated maximum will tend to lead to the tire overheating, and overheating is the single most-common cause for trailer tire failure. I suppose you could get away with the 205/75-15 to get by in an emergency or temporary situation. • Do Trailer Tires Have Average Life Span
Trailer tires - of any size - do not have any type of average life span; how long they last depends on a number of factors. One thing you will want to do on any trailer tire is always inflate the tire to the maximum cold psi. Doing this will give you the best performance, allowing the tire to wear more slowly and give you optimum gas mileage. Also be sure you have the correct load rating for your tire and follow the speed rating. In addition, radial tires are better for things such as...

On your travel trailer you have seen uneven tire wear because you were not running at max psi until the last 4,000 miles. • Why Choose Radial Tires Instead of Bias Ply Tires
For highway driving radials like the item # C22515D that you referenced are usually preferred because radials have more flex in the sidewalls which gives them excellent traction on paved roads. For off-road driving or driving on rough surfaces a bias ply tire is often preferred because it has stiffer sidewalls that will hold up better to the uneven surfaces. As far as the weight Load Range goes you can always select the appropriate size tire with a higher weight capacity if one is available....
