Standard Trailer Tire Tread

Contender Tire Tread

The standard tread on these tires has solid, continuous ribs, and it has very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. These tires are designed for use on trailers, so they don't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Contender radials have double polyester cords and double steel belts. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - C22515D Review

Today we're take a look at the Task Master Contender ST22575R15 Radio Trailer Tire in a load range D. Now this is a radial tire which is constructed with double steel belts, double polyester cords. It's great for highway use, has a nylon tread forming belt overlaid out, prevents tread separation, and it does include tread bars. If you look ever so often in the tread grooves you'll see raised areas, looks like little speed bumps. It's just like on your passenger car tires. Those are at 230 seconds tread depth.

When your tread wears down and those bars are straight across that means the tires are worn out. Just by looking at your tire wears it gives you a good visual indicator of how the tread is wearing. Now I do want to zoom in just so you'll be able to see the tread pretty good. There's the tread design you'll be getting. Go ahead and zoom back out. Now this is a special trailer tire design.

It'll couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. It is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles. This does meet the Department of Transportation specifications and it does exceed federal motor vehicle safety standards. Now this tire's designed to fit a wheel 15 6, 15 by 6 1/2, and 15 by 7 size wheels. The tire size, which is stamped on the side, ST for special trailer, 22575R15, the R designates it's a radial tire.

Now section width of this tire is going to be 8.8 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the very top when it's inflated is 28.3. Now this tire is a load range D, which means it's an 8 ply rated tire. And the maximum load capacity on this, it can be used in either a single tire or dual tire situation. In a single tire it's 2,540 pounds at 65 psi.

If you use it in a dual tire situation 2,200 at 65 psi. That should do it for the Task Master Contender ST22575R15 Radio Trailer Tire in a load range D.

Good tires. Thought they didn’t have the best tread; but actually work out great in off road terrain. They also do very well on the highway. 570543

Ordered them yesterday and they came the next day, faster than I expected. The tires are on the rims now and plan to put them back on the flat bed trailer this week end. They look to be just what I wanted in a tread pattern, more solid , without all the small groves that the last set had. (Goodyear) Driving on gravel roads just are them up. 288151

So far, the tires look good. The only thing I was a bit worried about is the date code on the tires are from almost a year ago. I understand that etrailer keeps them out of the elements, but I have also been warned about reaching the 5 year life expectancy of tires. 485034

These tires were a perfect replacement for our travel trailer and had a recent DOT manufacture date. I also like the fact that they were shipped in heavy-duty boxes to protect the tires which also made it easier for me to take them to the installer for mounting. Excellent quality tires for a good price, great job etrailer, thank you! 312352

I recently ordered two idler hubs a rim and tire to repair an older trailer I'm trying to make road worthy again. The hubs were for a #3500 Lb Dexter axle. I went with the cheaper hubs and while they are most likely imported the hubs were machined well and fit with no issues. the E-Trailer website was easy to use and really helpful when I was trying to determine what type of bolt pattern I had. Thanks! 292448

Review from a similar Taskmaster Contender Radial in Tires and Wheels

Purchased the Taskmaster radial to replace the four year old Carlisle bias ply. One of the old tires had a bulge. It seems they were rated to 60 MPH. In fairness I was pulling my boat above 70 most of the time. The Taskmaster is rated to 75 MPH. They are not quite as wide but I ordered the identical size as the old tires. It should be noted the service was amazing. I ordered on a Sunday night and they arrived on Wednesday. Free shipping in deluxe cardboard boxes. If the tire are as good as the service I'll be in great shape. 515913

Comments

The tires are excellent. Very smooth compared to the factory installed tires. Most of the time you cannot detect a boat trailer behind the vehicle. Would buy only radials going forward.

Product arrived on time packaged neatly with all 3 tires in a box. Tires were date coded Dec 2016, so a little old but should give a couple years service I hope. Tires were in great shape. Replacing the bias ply tires on my teardrop trailer to hopefully get better service on the highway. Time will tell, but have had good luck so far using etrailer for parts on the teardrop. 519039

After a year tires are wearing great on the trailer. These are the best tires that have been on the trailer. A couple thousand miles on them so far. Definitely will put another set of them on the tear when these wear out.

I ordered tires for my RV using the Website, the tires were not available from the distribution centre at that time, Ricky ( e-Trailer Rep) called and gave me some options in a timely manner. Got the tires in my garage a week later than the original delivery date, I liked that they were individually boxed. Great job and thanks for being on top of my order. Exactly what I ordered - no issues. 549827

Do you have a question about this Tires and Wheel?

  • Replacing 235/75R15 Tires on a Forest River r-pod
  • The ST235/75R15 tires you referenced are not a standard sized trailer tire, hence the difficulty in finding them. Your best bet to find tires now and in the future would be to replace those with 225/75R15 tires, which will be extremely close in overall dimensions, as I'll outline for you below. 235/75R15 tires are 9.3 inches wide with a height of 28.8 inches. 225/75R15 tires are 8.9 inches wide with a height of 28.3 inches. • The rim in the picture you supplied is a 4 on 9.44 bolt pattern. For a rim I recommend the Dexstar Vintage Steel Wheel # AM20501. This rim has a diameter of 15 inches and width of 6 inches. It's made of steel and has a corrosion resistant silver powder coat. The tires you have currently are passenger vehicle tires, identified by the letter "P" in the sizing. Trailer tires (Identified by the "ST" for Special Trailer) are constructed to withstand heavier loads and therefore should...

  • Replacing 235/75R15 Tires on a Forest River R-Pod
  • Yes, the answer remains the same for replacing 235/75R15 tires on your Forest River R-Pod, which will be to go with 225/75R15 tires that are 8.9" wide and 28.3" in diameter, which is a 1/2" less in diameter than the 235/75R15 tires. As I previously mentioned you do have quite a few options depending on the load range you need, which does need to meet or exceed your trailer's GVWR. For a 225/75R15 load range C tire with a maximum load capacity of 2,150 lbs at 50 psi there is the Karrier...

  • How to Pick Out Trailer Tire that Has Higher than 65 MPH Speed Rating
  • You didn't give me a tire size that you are looking for but the Taskmaster radial trailer tires we carry are rated for up to 81 mph so that would be your best option. You would need to select your tire size from the filters at the link I attached and all of the tires listed there will be rated for 81 mph.

  • Can You Upgrade Load Capacity Rating On Same Size Tires?
  • It is okay to step up from load range D to load range E tires. The dimensions are the same just the sidewall ply rating is different. The load range D tires are rated 8 ply and the range E tires are rated 10 ply. Moving one size is not an issue. If you want to compare prices, we have both load range D tires like the Taskmaster Contender ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # C22515D and the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # AM10303. We...

  • Selecting the Right Trailer Tire for Vintage Trailer Camper
  • The tires that were on it, P215, are actually tires meant for passenger cars so replacing them with tires meant for a trailer is a good idea. As for the size, a ST225/75R15 tire with load range of E such as the Karrier # AM10303 would be fine, though you want to check and see if your wheel has the capacity to match the 2,830 lbs at 80 psi capacity of the tire. The tire will also need to fit the wheel, with the aforementioned Karrier fitting 15" x 6", 15" x 6-1/2", 15" x 7" wheels. Should...

  • What Adco Spare Tire Cover 290-1755 Fit 235/75/15
  • Your tire diameter is 28.9 inches based on the size P235/75-15 so the part # 290-1755 would fit and work well. But, your tire size starts with the letter P which means it's a vehicle tire and not a trailer tire. You really need to go with a ST trailer rated tire. The closest ST rated size is 225/75-15 like the part # C22515D which would be a great choice. This would also work with the tire cover as well.

  • Trailer Tire Replacement for Size 8.55-15ST
  • From the research I did on your tire size of 8.55-15ST that would indicate that the modern tire size equivalent is ST225/75R15 which is a very common tire size. The Contender trailer tire part # C22515D is a great option for that size. It has a higher speed rating than most trailer tires at 81 MPH and is also priced great.

  • Uneven Tire Wear Due To Tire Pressure Or Speed
  • On your travel trailer you have seen uneven tire wear because you were not running at max psi until the last 4,000 miles. Trailer tires are designed to run at their max psi when inflated cold (prior to your trip). They will heat up and build more pressure as you travel, but they are intended to run at that psi. When you lower the psi, you will cause the tires to overheat and the wear can be seen over time as you are experiencing. If the speed rating is exceeded on your tires this can...

  • How to Select the Correct Tire Size for Trailer
  • There are no specific tire sizes for years, makes and models of trailers. The right tire will be one that meets or exceeds your 1992 Coachmen Catalina's GVWR and also fits your wheels and in the space your Catalina has. For example, the Contender # C22515D are ST225/75R15 tires that fit 15" diameter wheels, measure 28.3" in diameter when inflated and 8.8" wide and also have a load rating of D for a maximum capacity of 2,540 lbs when inflated to their max 65 psi. From my research it looks...

  • Recommended Tires and Wheels for a 1999 wilderness 27 5J Trailer
  • I did some searching online and it looks like the original tire size for your trailer is ST225/75R15 and the GVWR of your trailer is 9,000 lbs. Keeping that in mind I recommend going with the Taskmaster Contender # C22515D which has a Load Range of D (2,540 lbs at 65 psi). Since you have 2 axles these tires will have more than enough range for the weight of your trailer. These tires also have a max Speed Rating of M (81 mph). From this point you will need to know the bolt pattern...

  • Replacement Trailer Tire Recommendation for Trailer with P223/75R15
  • You should never run a P rated tire on a trailer. Whoever installed those tires on your trailer did so hopefully by mistake as that's not safe at all. A great tire to use as a replacement would be the part # C22515D which is an ST225/75R15 that would fit and work well. It also has a higher speed rating at 81 mph compared to most trailer tires that are only rated for 65.

  • Replacement Tires for Trailer with Size 255/75-15 Passenger Tires
  • You are on the right track getting rid of the car tires for trailer tires. Car tires aren't designed for the vertical load that trailer tires are and are more designed for vehicles with a steering axle. The closest tire size we have to what you currently have is 225/75-15 like the part # C22515D which would be a great option. The difference between the D and R in the tire size is the construction of it. D means bias-ply and R means radial which is the preferred construction. The main...

  • Recommended 8 Ply Rated Tire For 2012 Keystone Cougar With 10,000 lb GVWR
  • For your 2012 Keystone Cougar, with that weight rating, I recommend a 6 or 8 ply tire. From what I can find online without the specific model, it looks like you have 15 inch wheels. If that is the case, I recommend the Contender ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # C22515D. These tires have an 8 ply rating and a load capacity rating of 2,540 lbs at 65 psi. They also are rated for up to 81 mph. This will be great tires for a tandem axle trailer with GVWR of 10,000 lbs.
