Standard Trailer Tire Tread

Contender Tire Tread

The standard tread on these tires has solid, continuous ribs, and it has very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. These tires are designed for use on trailers, so they don't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Contender radials have double polyester cords and double steel belts. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - C20851D Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the Taskmaster Contender ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire in a Load Range D. Now, this is a radial tire. It's constructed with double steel belts, double polyester cords. Great for highway use. They do use a nylon tread-firming belt overlay to help prevent any tread separation, and they do offer the tread bars in the grooves here that'll give you a quick visual indication of how your tire tread is wearing. Now, this is special trailer tire design.

It does couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. It is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles. This tire does meet the DOT, which is the Department of Transportation, specifications. It will exceed your Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. A few specs on this, the wheel size this will fit on.

Fits on a 15" by 5", 15 by 5-1/2, 15 by 6, and a 15 by 6-1/2" wheel. Now, the tire size which is on the sidewall right here is ST for special trailer, 205, 75R15. The R means it's a radial tire. Section width on this is 8". Overall diameter from the very bottom to the top when it's inflated is 27.1.

Now, the capacity on this, this is a load range D which means it's an 8 ply rated tire. Maximum load capacity in a single tire application is 2,150 pounds at 65 psi. If used in a dual tire application is 1,870 pounds at 65 psi. One last thing I do want to mention is most all the trailer tires now are coming with a speed rating, and this one does have a speed rating and where to find it . Actually, on this one if you look right after the size and small print, it'll even say speed rating up to 81 miles per hour. The other way to tell it is right where the size is, if you look after it, there'll be two numbers and then a letter.

The letter designation is the speed rating. Speed rating is usually listed by a letter so this one is a speed rating M, which means 81 miles per hour. That should do it for the review on the Taskmaster Contender ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire in a Load Range D.

The tires were extremely difficult to mount. the side walls made it almost impossible to get the beads to seal. Since they have been on the trailer, I have gotten about 10,000 miles on one and 5,000 miles on the other with no problems. The wear seems to be good. So besides the difficulty installing they seem to be very good. 570961

Just purchased a used trailer for my RZR. we were headed back home and I had 2 of the tires had their tread come off. Tires were sun rotted and I only had one spare. After help from a friend we got home. Ordered Tires on Wednesday Morning, they arrived Friday packed in boxes and protected well. I took my trailer and the tires to Burt Brother tires in my area and had them mounted on all 4 wheels. Tires were exactly what I expected. The tire Guy said they mounted and balanced without issue. Thanks for a great deal and even better service. I've bought a few things over the last year or so from Etrailer and continue to be impressed with their service and prices. I'll keep coming back. 436136

One year follow up, I have had no issues at all with these tires. I have several thousands of miles on them and they are running well. Wearing and holding up well. I liked them so much I even bought a set mounted on wheels for my boat trailer.

3 stars because in a one week duration of having received the tires, they have zero miles on them. I purchased these VERY WISHFUL of tires lasting more than 5 to 6 thousand miles. My previous 2 sets were bias ply. The first set were dangerous at about 6k miles which were supplied with the new trailer. The second set bias are still on the 3500 pound GVW single axle trailer with about 3500 miles and tread wear down to about 25 percent remaining tread. This trailer has been loaded to about 75 percent of 3500 GVW when in use. If these tires don't get more miles I next will try auto radials with more flexible sidewalls, which I have seen done quite satisfactorily. 491141

Tires were built in sixth week of 2018 (0618) making them over a year old when I received them . Other than the age , I am appreciative of the quality and tread design on these tires . Have not installed them yet , but I will update this review after a few months of summer travel . Etrailer folks are awesome to deal with . Have a Blessed week . 652410

Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or even more before we received them. With the exception of the Goodyear Endurance, these tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they can sit in a warehouse for months until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can easily take a couple of months or more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years from the date of purchase, assuming theyre not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The product warranty begins at the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture.

This is an excellent tire. we plan on using this in off road travel so the 8 PR will definitely help with being on gravel roads. When we bought the camper (used) it had mixed tires bias ply and radial (NOT A GOOD SITUATION) and different ply ratings. (ALSO NOT A GOOD SITUATION) so matching the existing radials and plies was crucial before we headed out for the Memorial Day Holiday. Thanks E-Trailer 510878

I have really gotten a good value for these tires. I have done about 10 or 12 extended weekend trips with my camper since I have gotten these tires. So I have put about 2500 miles on them. They have worn great and have withstood the terrible roads in South Carolina. Will definitely purchase again 508637

I just found etrailer and could not be more pleased with the service they provide. My race car hauler needs new tires and I went to the local tire dealer for a quote to replace them. I thought the quote was too high so decided to research pricing on the computer. I stumbled onto etrailer.com and found they could provide a comparable tire upgraded to an 8 ply radial at 1/2 the price of the local tire company. Having never bought tires on the e-nt before, I thought shiping would be a night mare. Wow, was I wrong. Free shipping and each tire came in an individually packed box for protection and right on schedule. Neat tracking map as to where the product is while in transit. The tires are for a trailer that is used to haul everything from our sprint cars, vintage modified, 1/4 midgets, to this mini-sprint Actually looking forward to my next purchase and browsing the fine selection available from this company. 433337

I ordered tires for my RV using the Website, the tires were not available from the distribution centre at that time, Ricky ( e-Trailer Rep) called and gave me some options in a timely manner. Got the tires in my garage a week later than the original delivery date, I liked that they were individually boxed. Great job and thanks for being on top of my order. Exactly what I ordered - no issues. 549827

Product arrived on time packaged neatly with all 3 tires in a box. Tires were date coded Dec 2016, so a little old but should give a couple years service I hope. Tires were in great shape. Replacing the bias ply tires on my teardrop trailer to hopefully get better service on the highway. Time will tell, but have had good luck so far using etrailer for parts on the teardrop. 519039

After a year tires are wearing great on the trailer. These are the best tires that have been on the trailer. A couple thousand miles on them so far. Definitely will put another set of them on the tear when these wear out.

Very happy with the tires!!! I put them on my car hauler trailer. I will be needing 2 more in the future. I was so happy to see them shipped in boxes. Usually they are wrapped and the beads get pressed together making them very hard to mount!!! The tires I got from you, shipped the way you do, mounted easy as pie. As always, it was a pleasure doing business with you. Everything I have gotten from you has been perfect. The service as always was great, very happy!!! 271932

Review from a similar Taskmaster Contender Radial in Tires and Wheels

I purchased a pair of these tires for my boat trailer coverted to a utility trailer. The amount of treads on these radial tires are far superior than the bias ply tires I had on the trailer. The bias tires lasted less than 1000 miles. I have pulled 50 bags of mulch with no issues. I had a tire shop to mount the tires. I told them to inflate to the recommended pressure of 90 psi. They didn't do that. They infalted only to 55 psi. I asked why and they said they were afraid to inflate such a small tire to that pressure. I explaned to them the difference between car tires and trailer tires. I then brought my tires home an inflated to 90 psi. Thanks e-trailer for answering my questions about proper tire inflation and a great website. 544177

Review from a similar Taskmaster Contender Radial in Tires and Wheels

Purchased the Taskmaster radial to replace the four year old Carlisle bias ply. One of the old tires had a bulge. It seems they were rated to 60 MPH. In fairness I was pulling my boat above 70 most of the time. The Taskmaster is rated to 75 MPH. They are not quite as wide but I ordered the identical size as the old tires. It should be noted the service was amazing. I ordered on a Sunday night and they arrived on Wednesday. Free shipping in deluxe cardboard boxes. If the tire are as good as the service I'll be in great shape. 515913

Comments

The tires are excellent. Very smooth compared to the factory installed tires. Most of the time you cannot detect a boat trailer behind the vehicle. Would buy only radials going forward.

  • Radial vs Bias 205/75-15 Tires on Horse Trailer
  • The "D" on your new ST205/75D15 tires stands for diagonal or bias ply construction, meaning that the tire's body plies crisscross. A radial tire's plies like what you previously had on your trailer branch out from an imaginary center of the wheel. As you mentioned in your question, a radial tire's construction will allow for it to run cooler than a bias ply tire. This is especially true when the tire is under a heavy load. The reason this is important is because excessive heat is the primary...

  • What is the Replacement Trailer Tire Size for 7.00-15
  • The 7.00-15 tire size is still a current tire size manufactured today. We offer the Kenda K391M Tire, # AM10414 load range E, and # AM10412 load range D, tires in this size. The closest metric tire size to this is ST205/75-15. The ST205/75-15 tires are an 1/8" wider and 2" shorter in overall diameter. The nice thing about moving to the metric size is you can move from a bias ply tire to a radial tire like the Provider tire # TR20515D or the more economical Contender # C20851D. A radial...

  • Special Trailer Tires to Replace Sizes 215/75-15 and 165/80-13
  • For each of your two older trailers you will want to confirm the maximum weight (GVWR) before choosing new tires. Once you know the GVWR you will divide this by the number of tires on the trailer; this will tell you the minimum weight rating needed for each tire, but naturally some safety margin is a good thing. You will want to be sure to choose special trailer tires, the ST-type, and not passenger vehicle P-type tires for both trailers. Trailer tires are made to withstand the load...

  • Could Contender ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire be Used on a Dirt Road
  • The tire # C20851D is mainly intended for paved roads but would still work fine on dirt roads and gravel. Nothing we have for trailer tires is for off road applications but this would work well on a dirt road.

  • Replacement Tires for Old Travel Trailer Tires G78-15
  • Yes, the Contender Radial Tires, # C20851D, will be a good replacement for your G78-15 tires. The G78-15 tires have an overall diameter of 27.1" and the 205/75/15 have a diameter of 27.13". Your clearance of just 2" is concerning. Typically we recommend no less than 4.5" between the tire tread and the wheel well for bump clearance on trailers with leaf spring suspension. It is fine to change the size of your travel trailer tires as long as the tires you select are rated high enough...

  • Replacement Trailer Tires for 7.00-15LT Tires on 5,000 lb Camper
  • It is always a good idea to use trailer tires, which have the "ST" designation on a trailer, as opposed to your "LT" tires. Your 7.00-15LT tires have a section width of 7.8" and outer diameter of 29.4" and fit on 15" x 5", 15" x 5-1/2", 15" x 6" wheels. While there is not an exact duplicate size of your LT tires, there is something similar, a ST205/75R15 tire, which has an outer diameter of 27.1" and 8.1" section width. For a tire of this size I recommend checking out the Contender #...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Tire Failure for 205/75-15 Load Range D Tires
  • I am sorry to hear that you keep having blowouts. I have a few other things to offer to help out your situation but it does sound like you are doing some research. The first thing to check is your weight. You are correct that you want the majority of your weight to be slightly in front of your axle but the ideal tongue weight is 10-15% of the weight of your trailer. I have attached a helpful article on tongue weight for more info on this. The weight is also related to what your tires...

  • Can 205/75R15 Tires be Replaced With 225/75R15 Tires
  • It depends on the width of your wheel, but it is likely. For example, the Provider # TR20515D is a 205/75R15 tire that fits 15" x 5", 15" x 5-1/2", 15" x 6", and 15" x 6-1/2" diameter rims, while the Karrier # AM10251 is a 225/75R15 tire that fits 15" x 6", 15" x 6-1/2", and 15" x 7" rims. Additionally, a 225/75R15 tire will be 1.1" larger in diameter and 0.8" wider than a 205/75R15 tire so you need to make sure you have enough room for the slightly larger tire to fit.

  • Solution for Lowering Car Hauler
  • We do have smaller tires available that will fit your existing 15 inch wheels, however they will not feature the load capacity you are needing for your car hauler. For example, a 205/75R15 tire like # C20851D has a maximum load of 2,150 pounds per tire. This tire will have an overall diameter/height of 27.1 inches compared to the 28.4 inch diameter of your current set. Keep in mind though that a change in tire size will only lower (or raise) the trailer by half the difference in diameter,...

The tires we carry which fit are either 205/75-15 or 225/75-15 and you will need to make sure the tires you select have the necessary clearance and load capacity to work on your 1978 Airstream. Tires that are size 225/75-15 have a 28.4" diameter and are 8.9" wide while 205/75-15 tires are 27.1" in diameter and 8.1" wide. The load range that is right for you will be...

The load range of a tire indicates its horizontal and sidewall strength. Load Range D means that the tire has an 8 Ply Rating at 65 psi and will have a higher weight capacity than Load Range C. Load Range C has a 6 Ply Rating at 50 psi. The weight capacity of a ST205/75R15 Load Range D Tire is 2,150 lbs at 65 psi as opposed...

  • Selecting Trailer Tires with Suitable Weight Capacity and Speed Rating for Highway Use
  • Your trailer's 15 x 5-1/2-inch rims can accept two tire sizes, 7.00-15LT light truck tires and ST205/75-15 special trailer tires. In terms of maximum load capacity the 7.00-15LT light truck tires in load range E can handle the most weight, 2,403 lbs at 70 psi, while the highest-rated ST205/75-15 tire can handle 2150 lbs at 65 psi pressure. You want to choose four tires that in total can handle the GVWR of your trailer; find that GVWR figure and divide by 4 to find your minimum load requirement...

You do not need to calculate pressure differences based on the temperature. Once the temps increase and the pressure slightly increases you'll be fine as that's how the tire is designed.

  • Best Replacement Special Trailer Tires for Flagstaff Ultralight 5th Wheel Trailer
  • The best way to select replacement special trailer tires to help avoid blowouts is to choose tires with the highest available weight load range and speed ratings. Trailer tires in any given size are offered in more than one weight capacity and more than one speed rating. Overloading a trailer tire or operating it too fast both lead to excessive heat and this heat is the root cause of most tire failures. If you can take a look at one of your tires' sidewalls to find its metric size designation,...

  • Will a 235/65R17 Tire Fit the Same Wheel as a 245/65R17 Size Tire
  • Yes, a size 235/65R17 tire will fit the same wheel as a 245/65R17 size tire. The last digit in the tire size (17) indicates what size wheel that a specific tire fits on. For example, the ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10303 and the ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # C20851D will both fit on a 15" wheel like the Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel # AM20514.
