Standard Trailer Tire Tread

Contender Tire Tread

The standard tread on these tires has solid, continuous ribs, and it has very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. These tires are designed for use on trailers, so they don't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Contender radials have double polyester cords and double steel belts. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - C20851D Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the Taskmaster Contender ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire in a Load Range D. Now, this is a radial tire. It's constructed with double steel belts, double polyester cords. Great for highway use. They do use a nylon tread-firming belt overlay to help prevent any tread separation, and they do offer the tread bars in the grooves here that'll give you a quick visual indication of how your tire tread is wearing. Now, this is special trailer tire design.

It does couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. It is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for use on any other vehicles. This tire does meet the DOT, which is the Department of Transportation, specifications. It will exceed your Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. A few specs on this, the wheel size this will fit on.

Fits on a 15" by 5", 15 by 5-1/2, 15 by 6, and a 15 by 6-1/2" wheel. Now, the tire size which is on the sidewall right here is ST for special trailer, 205, 75R15. The R means it's a radial tire. Section width on this is 8". Overall diameter from the very bottom to the top when it's inflated is 27.1.

Now, the capacity on this, this is a load range D which means it's an 8 ply rated tire. Maximum load capacity in a single tire application is 2,150 pounds at 65 psi. If used in a dual tire application is 1,870 pounds at 65 psi. One last thing I do want to mention is most all the trailer tires now are coming with a speed rating, and this one does have a speed rating and where to find it . Actually, on this one if you look right after the size and small print, it'll even say speed rating up to 81 miles per hour. The other way to tell it is right where the size is, if you look after it, there'll be two numbers and then a letter.

The letter designation is the speed rating. Speed rating is usually listed by a letter so this one is a speed rating M, which means 81 miles per hour. That should do it for the review on the Taskmaster Contender ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire in a Load Range D.

The tires were extremely difficult to mount. the side walls made it almost impossible to get the beads to seal. Since they have been on the trailer, I have gotten about 10,000 miles on one and 5,000 miles on the other with no problems. The wear seems to be good. So besides the difficulty installing they seem to be very good. 570961

Just purchased a used trailer for my RZR. we were headed back home and I had 2 of the tires had their tread come off. Tires were sun rotted and I only had one spare. After help from a friend we got home. Ordered Tires on Wednesday Morning, they arrived Friday packed in boxes and protected well. I took my trailer and the tires to Burt Brother tires in my area and had them mounted on all 4 wheels. Tires were exactly what I expected. The tire Guy said they mounted and balanced without issue. Thanks for a great deal and even better service. I've bought a few things over the last year or so from Etrailer and continue to be impressed with their service and prices. I'll keep coming back. 436136

One year follow up, I have had no issues at all with these tires. I have several thousands of miles on them and they are running well. Wearing and holding up well. I liked them so much I even bought a set mounted on wheels for my boat trailer.

3 stars because in a one week duration of having received the tires, they have zero miles on them. I purchased these VERY WISHFUL of tires lasting more than 5 to 6 thousand miles. My previous 2 sets were bias ply. The first set were dangerous at about 6k miles which were supplied with the new trailer. The second set bias are still on the 3500 pound GVW single axle trailer with about 3500 miles and tread wear down to about 25 percent remaining tread. This trailer has been loaded to about 75 percent of 3500 GVW when in use. If these tires don't get more miles I next will try auto radials with more flexible sidewalls, which I have seen done quite satisfactorily. 491141

Tires were built in sixth week of 2018 (0618) making them over a year old when I received them . Other than the age , I am appreciative of the quality and tread design on these tires . Have not installed them yet , but I will update this review after a few months of summer travel . Etrailer folks are awesome to deal with . Have a Blessed week . 652410

Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or even more before we received them. With the exception of the Goodyear Endurance, these tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they can sit in a warehouse for months until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can easily take a couple of months or more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years from the date of purchase, assuming theyre not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The product warranty begins at the date of purchase, not the date of manufacture.

This is an excellent tire. we plan on using this in off road travel so the 8 PR will definitely help with being on gravel roads. When we bought the camper (used) it had mixed tires bias ply and radial (NOT A GOOD SITUATION) and different ply ratings. (ALSO NOT A GOOD SITUATION) so matching the existing radials and plies was crucial before we headed out for the Memorial Day Holiday. Thanks E-Trailer 510878

- C20851D

I have really gotten a good value for these tires. I have done about 10 or 12 extended weekend trips with my camper since I have gotten these tires. So I have put about 2500 miles on them. They have worn great and have withstood the terrible roads in South Carolina. Will definitely purchase again 508637

Tires are still great. Glad I purchased! Would definitely buy again

I just found etrailer and could not be more pleased with the service they provide. My race car hauler needs new tires and I went to the local tire dealer for a quote to replace them. I thought the quote was too high so decided to research pricing on the computer. I stumbled onto etrailer.com and found they could provide a comparable tire upgraded to an 8 ply radial at 1/2 the price of the local tire company. Having never bought tires on the e-nt before, I thought shiping would be a night mare. Wow, was I wrong. Free shipping and each tire came in an individually packed box for protection and right on schedule. Neat tracking map as to where the product is while in transit. The tires are for a trailer that is used to haul everything from our sprint cars, vintage modified, 1/4 midgets, to this mini-sprint Actually looking forward to my next purchase and browsing the fine selection available from this company. 433337

  • Recommended Tires Compatible With 205/75/15 Trailer Tire
I have a link with all the tires that are fit with a 205/75/15 load range D trailer tire. I recommend Contender ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire Load Range D # C20851D. This radial special trailer tire has a ply rating of 8 and a 2,150-lb maximum load at 65 psi. I'm recommending a radial tire because the cords on this tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. Tires that are sized 6.70-15 have a section width of 6.7 inches and wheel diameter of 15 inches. A replacement for those would be size 205/75-15, which we offer in either bias or radial and load ranges B, C, and D. Radial tires are used for normal driving and highway use, while bias tires have a stiffer sidewall that is better for off-road use. For a radial tire with a load range of D I recommend the Contender # C20851D, which maximum load rating of 2,150 lbs at 65 psi and maximum speed...

When fully inflated a 205/75-15 tire is 27.1" in diameter and a 225/75-15 tire is 28.3" in diameter, and that difference can be hard to see, especially if one is inflated more than the other. It really depends on how well the tire is kept, how often the trailer is used, if the tires have protection from the elements, and if they are used properly. If you will be traveling on the highway then a 205/70-15 size tire with an R instead of a D is much better on your trailer as the R stands for radial and the D stand for bias. Radial tires have cords that run at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel which allows it to flex more and run cooler than a bias tire. The difference between a bias and radial ply is in regards to the directions of the cords. In short, a radial ply tire will run cooler than a bias ply tire which makes it better for highway use. While there is not an exact duplicate size of your LT tires, there is something similar, a ST205/75R15 tire, which has an outer diameter of 27.1" and 8.1" section width. For a tire of this size I recommend checking out the Contender #...
