Platinum Plus Warranty with Roadside Assistance

This tire-and-wheel assembly comes with a Platinum Plus warranty that includes complimentary roadside assistance for 2 years. If your trailer has a flat tire, call the help line and a technician will come change out the flat tire with your existing inflated spare tire. The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition to the roadside assistance, this warranty also includes other benefits and services.

Built-In Offset for Dual Applications

This wheel is designed to be used in dual-wheel setups. The 5.35" offset allows the wheel to be positioned closer to the trailer frame when used as the inner wheel of the setup. And if you use this wheel in the outer position, the offset ensures that it will sit closer to the outside of your trailer. This hub-piloted wheel centers on the hub, not the lugs, and it requires the use of flange nuts (sold separately) for installation.

Corrosion-Resistant Finish

The steel wheel goes through a 3-step finishing process that makes it both attractive and corrosion resistant. The wheel is first submerged in a zinc phosphate bath to ensure good paint adhesion. It is then e-coated with an acrylic primer base and finished on both sides with baked-on DuPont powder paint.

Standard Trailer Tire Tread

Contender Tire Tread

The standard tread on these tires has solid, continuous ribs, and it has very few sipes (or thin grooves) cut into the rubber. These tires are designed for use on trailers, so they don't require the level of traction that would be needed on a vehicle that is braking or steering.

Contender radials have double polyester cords and double steel belts. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - AC16R477 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Taskmaster Contender 235/80R16 radial trailer tire in a load range E on a 16" silver dual steel wheel with the 8 on 6.5" bolt pattern. This tire and wheel assembly's designed for use on dually trailers. The steel wheel comes with the 4 handholds design. It's very sturdy and corrosion resistant. The wheel goes through a 3-step finishing process which includes first a phosphate zinc bath, then an e-coat primer, and then a silver powder coat on both sides of the wheel. The center disc on this wheel is spun formed from a fine grain steel and as you can see it's welded into place for strength and durability.

This is a hub piloted wheel which means this will center onto the hub of the axle. It does require the use of 5/8"-18 flange nuts which we do sell separately on our website. They're part number 95188. The tire that's mounted on this wheel is a radial tire. It's constructed with double steel belts, double polyester cords. It is great for highway use.

They do use a nylon tread-firming belt overlay to help prevent tread separation. They do use tread depth bars on this tire just like you would see on your passenger car tire. What the tread depth bars are is ever so often on the tire grooves . If you look inside the groove, you'll see there's a section where the tread depth bars .. It almost looks like a speed bump in each groove and they're at 2/32 tread depth.

Basically what those tread depth bars will tell you is when your tire's completely worn out so when your tire tread wears down and that bar goes straight across, that means it's 2/32 which is worn out. Just by looking where those bars are gives you a good indication of the tread wear of your tires. I do want to zoom in on the treads so you can see the tread design. That's the tread design of the Contender tire. Now we'll go ahead and zoom back out. This is a special trailer tire.

It's designed to couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. It is created specifically for trailers. It's not intended for us on any other vehicles. This whole wheel assembly does meet the DOT specifications and exceeds the federal motor vehicle safety standards. A few stepbacks 00:02:14 on this. Starting with the rim. The diameter of the rim, which is always measured inside to inside, is 16" in diameter. The width on the wheel is 6" wide. The bolt pattern on this wheel is a 8 on 6.5" bolt pattern. If you ever wanted to measure the bolt pattern on a wheel that's an even number of lugs, like in this case 8, all you have to do is pick any one of the lug holes and measure from the center of the starting hole directly across to the center of the hole you go to. If we put a ruler center to center on this, it'd be 6.5". So 8 on 6.5" bolt pattern. As I mentioned earlier, it does require a flange nut size of 5/8" by 18. This wheel by itself does have a weight capacity of 3,500 pounds. The hub pilot diameter right here, this is what goes over the hub on your trailer . The diameter of this opening is 4.77". Does have an offset on this wheel of 5.35". The tire that's mounted on it, the size is stamped on the side. ST for special trailer, 235/80R16. The "R" designates that it's a radial tire. Section width on it is 9.3". Overall diameter from the very bottom to the top when it's inflated is 30.8". This tire is a load range E which means it's a 10 ply rated tire. The maximum on this and the dual tire application is 3,080 pounds at 80 psi. That should do it for the review. The Taskmaster Contender ST235/80R16 radial trailer tire in a load range E on a 16" silver dual steel wheel with the 8 on 6.5" bolt pattern.

  • Switching from Triple Single Axles to Tandem Dually Axles on a Gooseneck Trailer
  • For starters, there are definitely differences between a dually trailer axle and a non-dually trailer axle. You cannot simply put a dual wheel and tire setup on a non-dually trailer axle. A dually trailer axle is going to have a much higher capacity (usually 10K plus), larger brakes, longer wheel studs, larger diameter shaft etc. Unfortunately, we do not carry heavy duty dually trailer axles so you will need to look for these elsewhere but I have sent you a link on a good place to start....
