Durable, Corrosion-Resistant PVD Finish Is Environmentally Friendly

PVD Finish

The highly corrosion-resistant finish on this steel wheel is applied through a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating process. This process occurs in a vacuum environment so that the aluminum coating binds to the steel at a molecular level. As a result, the coating is harder, more durable, and more wear resistant than chrome plating.

Compared to hexavalent and trivalent chrome plating methods, the PVD process creates a finish that withstands the effects of water, flying debris, and other elements for a longer period of time. The aluminum-coated wheels performed for more than 168 hours in salt spray tests, up to 500 hours in water immersion tests, and up to 40 lbs in impact-resistance tests. They won't pit or peel like chrome-plated wheels, and they resist the effects of any chemicals that may be on the road, such as magnesium chloride or salt during icy or snowy weather.

In addition, the PVD coating process is an eco-friendly alternative to chrome plating, which is extremely toxic to the environment.

Improved Torque Retention Technology

Beveled Stud Holes Front and Back

The automotive-rated center disc is raised and the stud holes are beveled and uncoated for better clamp force retention. This technology helps the wheel stay tight against your hub without the need for constant retightening.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Taskmaster Tires and Wheels - Wheel Only - 460545MBPVD

Today we're taking a look at the Taskmaster Steel Modular Trailer Wheel, and this is going to be a very nice looking but also a very durable wheel for your trailer. Has a modular design that's going to make it very corrosion resistant, and it has a PVD coating process that's going to create the nice sort of silvery black finish. And it's going to be much more durable than your typical chrome plating. It's not going to chip or flake with salt on the road, because of impacts on it. It's going to be able to withstand pretty harsh conditions and still stay looking nice. That PVD coating is also more environmentally friendly than the chrome plating, since chrome plating can typically be pretty toxic, and this is actually going to bind to the steel of the wheel at the molecular level. It has a salt spray rating of more than 168 hours.

That's 168 hours, and it does have an improved torque retention or IRT technology, that helps you keep the wheel securely in place on your trailer, so you don't have to worry about the bevel holes. Or, the uncoated stud holes are beveled, to offer a better clamp force retention. So, as the lug nuts come down, they're able to better get a grip and stay in place, and you don't have to worry about tightening everything down repeatedly, to get it to stay together. At the bottom, you'll notice we have our valve stem attached and that is included with it. It's going to meet the SAEJ1204 standards. Now as far as dimensions with this, the rim dimensions will be 14" in diameter.

And then 6" wide. And that's going from the inside edge to inside edge. That's where the bead seat of the tire will be, whenever that tire's in place. So, I have 6" there, and then 14" going across. And again, that's kind of going to this inner section here.

It's not to the outer part of the wheel itself. It's where that tire actually sits. The bolt pattern is going to be five on four and a half, which is measured from one bolt hole to the center of the other, since it is an odd number. And that will give you that four and a half measurement. So, if we get our tape measure from the center of that bolt hole to right in between the next two, right across from it, that'll give us 4 1/2".The wheel bolt size, so the bolt that'll go right through here is going to be 1/2" by 20.

The pilot diameter, which is this hole here that our axle actually go through, is 3.27" or a little over 3 1/4". Has a zero offset, and it does have a capacity of 1,870 pounds, or 1870 pounds. It does have a two year limited warranty from Taskmaster. And that's going to do it for our look at the Taskmaster Steel Modular Trailer Wheel.
