Castle Rock Radials

Castle Rock Tread Close-Up

Unlike standard trailer tire tread, which has solid, continuous ribs, the tread on these Castle Rock radials has ribs with breaks. These breaks allow water to run off to the sides. The Castle Rock tread also has sipes. Siping is a process in which thin grooves (or sipes) are cut into the rubber of the tire. The grooves channel water away from the tread so that the tire makes better contact with the road. Both of these features greatly improve traction during wet, snowy, or icy conditions.

Castle Rock radials are constructed with double steel belts and double nylon cords. A protective layer of nylon is wrapped around the steel belts to help prevent tread separation.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Review of Lionshead Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - 274-000029

Today we're going to take a look at the Castle Rock ST 225 75 R15 Radio Trailer Tire in a Load Range D. Now, this is a radial ply tire. It's great for highway use, constructed with double steel belts, double nylon plys. Does use a nylon tread forming belt overlay to help prevent tread separation, and they even include the tread wear indicators like you'll see on passenger car tires, where you're able to look at the tread depth and see how the tire is wearing. This is a ST tire, which means special trailer design. Has sturdy side walls so they can handle heavy loads, and it is created specifically for trailers, not intended for use on any other vehicles. This tire does come with a complementary road side assistance for two years.

Does offer flat tire service, which is available 24 hours, seven days a week anywhere in the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico. This tire does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Specifications. This tire is designed to fit on either a 15 inch by five inch wide wheel, or 15 inch by six inch wide wheel. The tire size, which is stamped on the side wall is going to be ST for special trailer, 225, 75 R15. The R designates that it's a radial design tire. Section width is going to be right at 8.8 inches.

Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 28.3. This is a load range D, which means it's an eight ply rated tire, so it has a maximum load capacity of 2,540 pounds at 65 PSI, and the last thing I do want to mention is most all your new trailer tires are coming through with speed ratings now, and a speed rating is always stamped on the tire, and it's always designated by a letter designation. So if you look right after the size we just went over, you'll see two numbers, which are the load index and then at the very end of those numbers is the letter L. Speed rating L will mean 75 miles per hour. But that should do it for the review on the Castle Rock ST 225, 75 R15 Radial Trailer Tire, in a Load Range D.

etrailer was the only place I could find to order a tire that matched the other three tires on my RV. Ordering was easy and the tire was delivered when they said it would be. The tire was delivered in a cardboard box with handles making it easy to move around. If I ever need another tire I would definitely use etrailer.com again. 670236

I rate 5 stars for the following reasons: (a) etrailer had the best price for my trailer tires, (b) the order was delivered by UPS in 3 days for free, and (c) I was kept informed by email of the progress of my order. 655433

  • Comparing the Castle Rock and Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire
  • The Castle Rock ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire part # 274-000029 and the Westlake ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire part # LHWL304 are both made by the same company, Lionshead. In short, Lionshead is the brand and Westlake/Castle Rock is the model. The main difference between these two is that the Castle Rock tire has a load range D (2,540 lbs) and the Westlake tire has a load range E (2,830 lbs) rating. The Westlake tire would give you more of a cushion for your 10,000 lb trailer so that...

  • What is Causing Blowouts and Can 225/75-15 Trailer Tires Replace 205/75-15 Trailer Tires
  • A blowout can be caused by any number of things, from the trailer being overloaded to the tire being underinflated (or underrated) to just a poor quality tire. In general, the higher the load range and capacity the higher the ply rating will be, so if you are using 4-ply tires and have 15 inch wheels, it sounds like you may not have a tire with the correct load capacity so in your case I strongly recommend going to a trailer tire with a higher ply rating, and a higher quality tire. • How to Choose Boat Trailer Tires
  • There is a way for you to select the right tire, though I was unable to find any type of specs for a Bayliner trailer. However, it is easy to find the correct tires for your application, you simply want to choose tires that have a combined capacity which exceeds the GVWR of your trailer and fit your wheels. For example, the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10199 is a load range C tire with a capacity of 1,360 lbs (or 2,720 lbs for two) that fits 13" x 4-1/2", 13" x 5", and...

  • Yes, the Castle Rock ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire w/ 15" Silver Mod Wheel part # LHACK124 does come mounted on the wheel. The Castle Rock ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire by itself is part # 274-000029. The Lionshead 15" x 6" 6 on 5-1/2 Steel Modular trailer wheel by itself is part # LHHA312.
