Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Blew a boat trailer tire on the way home 2 days ago. Shocked as the trailer is 3 years old and has less than 1000 miles on it. Looked at prices locally to replace one and was disappointed on the wait time /price etc. Checked on line with etrailer and price to order 2 with rims was a lot cheaper for sure. Ordered them and received them in 2 days. Packaged very secure and professionally. “WOW”. Spoke with customer service on a question I had and received 3 emails back in less than a hour. This company is a class act.. Start to Finish. Will be buying more items from them. Nice to find a-company that really does care.. 703589

Before I get to the bad, I would like to point out that mistakes do happen. I received 2 wheel assemblies. One was flat, BAD. The Good... when I brought this to e-trailers attention they immediately sent me a new one. Then they gladly provided a UPS return tag for "FREE RETURN SHIPMENT" back to them. Every company can have a problem; it's how they handle it that makes them good. I only gave the tire a 2 out of 5. E-trailer gets a 5 out of 5. 111575

After a year I have had no trouble with my new tires. e-Trailers customer service is second to NONE! I will always look to them first in the future... and their prices are very competitive. Win - Win! They still get a 5 out of 5 in my book.

Product stated a kendra tire, but the delievered product is Loadstar 715544

Comments
The Loadstar tire is just one of many different tire styles made by Kenda. I pulled one of these tires and wheels from our warehouse and confirmed they do not put the Kenda name on the tire. The Loadstar tire line is Kendas Bias Ply Trailer Tire, while their Radial Trailer Tire is called the Karrier.

Great tires and wheels at a great price. Got a set of these for a boat I just purchased. The tires came fast with normal delivery (I am in Virginia) which is getting more uncommon during the pandemic. TIres came boxed for good protection, inflated at 60 psi, so I finished inflating to 90 psi. Looking forward to bringing the boat home from Cape Cod, decided to go Load Rating E for total piece of mind (in this case, more is better!). etrailer staff were very well informed on the phone, discussing issues of hubs and bearings and given solid advice (rather than just selling me something). etrailer is a great source for information and products at good prices. 817519

The tire/wheel I ordered was delivered on time and was the right size for my MagicTilt trailer, and the person I talked to prior to placing the order was very helpful. I use the tire/wheel as a spare in case I get a flat while towing my boat. I haven't had to use it yet, fortunately, but I feel better having it when I'm towing. I would hate to get a flat on the road and not be able to change the tire. Imagine having to disconnect and drive away to find a solution, leaving your boat and trailer parked at the side of the highway. It's well worth the $ to have a spare handy. 806355

  • Upgrading 20.5x8-10 Tires on Pontoon Boat Trailer to Higher Load Capacity Tires
The modern equivalent to the 20.5x8.0-10 size tires on your pontoon trailer is the 205/65-10 size, which would fit your existing wheels without issue. The highest rated trailer tire we have available in this size is the Kenda Loadstar K399 Bias # AM1HP56, which features a maximum load of 1,650 pounds at 90 psi. This would give you a combined load of 3,300 for a nice safety margin with your trailer that weighs under 3,000 pounds when loaded. This particular tire does also have an excellent...

  • Can a Trailer with 5.70-8 Tires get Replaces with 20.5x8-10
The overall diameter of a 5.70-8 is right at 18.1 inches and the nearest size for a 10 inch rim is the 20.5x8-10 which is 20.5 inches in overall diameter. The width difference between the two is right at 2.5 inches. If you have room for the additional diameter and width you would be totally fine. It would just be a matter of getting the correct bolt pattern. For a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you would want the part # AM3H490 or for a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern # AM3H460.
