Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Could not be happier with my purchase on etrailer. Tires came the next day as promised properly aired and ready to go. Mounted them to the camper that night and headed out for camping the next day. Traveled both the back roads and highway. The ride was much better than the old tires I had on the camper. I will be replacing the spare tire soon with another purchase on etrailer. I would highly recommend etrailer to anyone for their quality and customer service. 674645

I am completely satisfied with my new tires. My boat had been in storage for a long time and the tires that were on it gave out. It was an odd ball size but I found these that were better than the originals and these didn't break the bank. I just got the tires in the mail today but compared to the local branch of redneck trailer company I give you five stars. They sold me the wrong lug pattern then tried to charge me a restocking fee when I wanted to exchange them. Etrailer.com on the other hand was cheaper and corresponded veeeery quickly through email. As opposed to the hour it took to buy the original tires from redneck. They have my business from here on out and I will recommend them to anyone. Thanks etrailer for your excellent customer service. 662768

  • 4.80-12 Trailer Tire with 81 MPH Speed Rating
What you found is a DOT number and not a speed rating. I was able to figure out which tire you have and it's a Loadstar 4.80-12 that has a 65 mph speed rating. In this size we have a tire that can go 81 mph as part # TT48012C.

  • Lug Nut Torque for Trailer Wheels
The Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range E # AM3H460 don't have a suggested torque value. The torque is based on lug bolt stud diameter and the lug nut type. I've attached a chart to assist. most of the 4 on 4 inch hubs will have a 1/2 inch diameter lug bolt and a coned lug nut so they would be torques between 75 and 85 foot lbs. If you don't have a torque wrench, I recommend using the Powerbuilt Digital Torque Adapter - 1/2" Drive # ALL940962....

  • Benefits of Changing to Larger Tire and Wheel on Kayak Trailer
There are a couple potential benefits to going with larger tires and wheels on your home built kayak trailer. The first is that a larger tire will likely raise your trailer a bit, resulting in better ground clearance when traveling. Another potential benefit is that a larger tire and wheel will most likely have a larger load capacity. Keep in mind though...

  • Will there be Any Problem Using a Load Range E Trailer Tire Instead of a Load Range D
The ride might feel a little more stiff with the higher capacity load range E tire. And you would want to make all of the tires the same load range or you could see uneven tire wear. Other than that there isn't really any issue with using an E instead of a D. The Higher load range E tire will likely require more air pressure. For example on a 206/65-10 load range D tire such as # AM1HP54 it will have a rating of 1,330 pounds at 70psi. But the load range E in the same size, # AM1HP56,...
