Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Tire and wheel assemblies arrived within a few days of placing the order. I have purchased a number of different items from etrailer and have always been satisfied. I find the question and answer sections and videos to be very helpful. In this case I changed from a 5.80-8 tire to a 165/65-8 tire for my ancient snow mobile trailer. I was able to determine in advance the dimensions and ratings of the new tire and wheel assembly and confirm that it would fit. 849440

I needed a wheel for my riding lawn mower, It's a older unit and the dealers that had one wanted 3x what I paid at etrailer. I recommend them highly for both price and service, fast shipping too ! Thanks etrailer 695055

I really like the tires I bought from you better than I expected and they look nice on my boat trailer. it took care of my dry rotting tires that I had to mess with every time I had the trailer inspected. my rims were all rusted more than I wanted to be bothered with and they were reasonably priced for the quality which was very good. 673324

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Difference Between Trailer Tire Sizes 165/65-8 and 4.80-8
The tire size 165/65-8 is .4 of an inch taller than the 4.80-8 tire size and fits a rim almost two inches wider. The sizes are very similar but the 165/65-8 size is a bit different. Either size tire requires a different width rim. We have replacements on rims like the part # AM3H200 for if you have a 4 bolt wheel or part # AM3H220 if you have a 5 bolt wheel.

  • Trailer Tire that is Narrower than Size 18.5x8.5-8
We have a narrower wheel and tire that is similar to what you have now with the size 16.5x6.5-8 which is the same as the modern size 165/65-8. For this mounted on a 4 lug wheel you'd want # AM3H200 or for a 5 lug # AM3H220. This would give you right at one more inch of clearance between the frame and the tire.

  • Replacement 16x6.50-8 Tire and Wheel for Tree Dolly with 1 inch Bearing
If your wheel mounts on a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, then the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM3H200 is a suitable replacement as it uses a hub with a 1 inch inner/outer bearing like # AKIHUB-440-2-1K. However, if your original dolly wheel looks more like # MT70225-1, then we don't have one with the dimensions you need. The MaxxTow replacement tire/wheel uses a 6 inch diameter rim instead, and is compatible with a 0.942 inch hub bore.

The tire on the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3H200 has a speed rating of 65 mph. This wheel and tire combo has a maximum capacity of 800 lbs (per wheel/tire) and fits a 4 on 4" bolt pattern. I have added a link to a video review for you to check out as well.

  • Comparing Trailer Tire Sizes 16.5x6.5-8 and 165/65-8
You are absolutely correct that the two different tire sizes, 16.5x6.5-8 and 165/65-8, are in fact the same size, the latter being the modern metric designation. The part you referenced, Kenda # AM3H200, is a 165/65-8 bias-ply tire/wheel with a 4-on-4-inch bolt pattern in Load Range C. • What Is the Backspacing on the Rim of the # AM3H200
The Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM3H200 uses the Americana # AM20011 wheel which has a zero offset. This will split the width in half, so once you account for the thickness of the mounting plate, you will have about 2-1/2 inches on either side of that mounting location for the wheel but when you include the tire it will be about 3.3 inches to either side. So the rim backspacing is 2-1/2 inches and the Tire backspacing is 3.3 inches.

  • Speed Rating for Trailer Tires for 8 inch Rim
Special trailer tires are usually rated to operate at a maximum speed of 65 mph. If you exceed 65 mph, heat could build up in the tire and cause it to break down and fail. If a tire is rated to run at a higher speed. The two part numbers # AM3H200 and # AM30000 are both rated at 65 miles per hour.

  • Wider Replacement for a 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tire
The best wider replacement option we have for a 4.80/4.00-8 trailer tire is a 165/65-8 trailer tire which is going to be pretty much the same overall diameter (16.1" vs. 16.5") so .4" larger but 2" wider (4.6" vs. 6.6"). If you have a 4 on 4" bolt pattern then I recommend the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM3H200 but if you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern then I recommend the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM3H220.

  • Can Size 4.80/4.00-8 Tires on Trailer Be Safely Replaced With 165/65-8 Tires
The Kenda # AM3H200, like the majority of trailer tires is rated for a maximum speed of 65 mph. The 165/65-8 tire size is 16.5 inches in diameter and 6.6 inches wide, while your original 4.80/4.00-8 tires are close in diameter at 16.1 inches but are a good deal narrower at 4.7 inches wide. Since the 165/65-8 tires would extend 1 inch closer toward the trailer frame on the inside, they'll work if you have enough clearance to the inside of the tire. The # AM3H200 165/65-8 tire would...
