Radial Tires vs. Bias Ply Tires

The cords on this radial ply tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great fast service, nice employees when I had questions. Best of all the product was as described and delivered undamaged. I wil be buying another for a spare. 383786

Called etrailer to see if these wheels would work to upgrade from 8” wheels to 12” on my trailer. They agreed that these would work. Wheels arrived two days later, and fit perfectly. Top notch customer service experience. 503759

This tire is going on a trailer. It will be an upgrade from the tiny stock tire, but I haven't had time to put it to use. It's initial quality seems excellent. This review is more of a testament to etrailer.com. From step one until their speedy delivery, they communicated every step. I blow A LOT of money online and have never experienced a more thorough buying and product support process/site. Highly recommend etrailer.com. If the tire turns out crappy, I'll get back with you. 242729

Bought these a year ago to replace constant-failing "big box store" tires ... these are far superior, and not only ride better, but are holding up much better as well. These get used several times a year for either short local trips (Home Depot runs), or longer trips hauling a ~900 lb railroad trackcar a few hundred miles to/from organized track excusions. Have behaved perfectly the whole time. 303217

Great Job etrailer !!!!!!! you have a customer for life. Love my purchase and thanks for the great customer support from Troy H. If anyone wants to jump from the 4.80x12 or the 5.30x12 wheels and Bias tires to Radial tires ST145/R12 on Black or White Mod wheels then this will be a perfect choice and fits perfectly. Thanks again. 476460

Installed 2 tire/wheels on 04/07/16 have towed 100 miles to break-in tires Pulling resistance seems to be lower trailer tracks very stable The only thing that maybe an issue is needing to balance tires for a less bumpy ride I am going to try to find a tire store that can balance 12" tires Also this tire looks like a real tire unlike Bias Ply tires and the tread depth is 6/32" which should do well in the rain possibly less hydroplaning the bias ply Other than that tire/wheel is very well made product They should balance where tire/wheel is mounted before offering for retail sale Thank You 243742

Great looking rim and definitely a better tire than what comes stock on my trailer. My trailer is brand new but came with Bias tires which I don't trust at all. Radial tires track much better, have a flatter tread which tracks better and are overall a stronger tire in my mind. The trailer came without a spare so I used one of the original Wheel as a spare . 634060

I've not used the trailer since installation but they look good and I have no doubt they will perform well. Thanks to everyone at etrailer 450323

I originally ordered cheaper bias ply tires, under the direction of an inexperienced sales person who told me that these tires, which I specifically asked him about, would not fit my trailer. In fairness, the website also did not indicate a fit for these, although it seemed from the specs that they would be fine. But the bias ply tires that I ended up ordering were well out of round and clearly not good for highway travel, or really even a trip around town IMO. Way too rough. I called to return them, spoke with a more experienced sales person, and was told that these radials would indeed fit my trailer. For $20 more per tire, she said that they would be far better and smoother than the bias ply ones I was returning. Absolutely correct. A good smooth ride at highway speeds, I would highly recommend these over a bias ply unless maybe you're just hauling stuff around the farm. (Hopefully the website has now been updated to indicate a fit, as this should help a lot of confused customers.) This is my third order of tires with rims from Etrailer, and despite the snafu in finding what I needed in the second of these orders, I've found ETrailer to be a very responsive business which offers good pricing, a wide selection, fast shipping, good service and an excellent return policy. After having also done due diligence in researching other options before my first order, it's nice to now have a go-to company for any future trailer tire needs. Thanks. 445212

Excellent tires, deliverer quick and packaged well. Used these to replace some 5.30 12 inch tires. Fit perfectly even though they are a tad bigger. Received excellent advice prior to buying these so I knew with confidence they would fit my trailer without issues. 414263

Replaced 12" Bias Tires with these. Have only done a short test run with the trailer, but all seems well. These tires are slightly larger in height and width, but I don't think that will be a problem. Trailer is a Carry-On 6' x 8' mesh floor landscape trailer. We tow dirt and road bikes with it. 409715

After a year everything is still fine with the new tires. Much better tread wear than the Bias tires that came on the trailer.

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Tires and Wheels

  • Will Trailer Tire Size 145/80-12 Replace 4.80-12
The tire size 145/80-12 does fit on the same rim size as what your 4.80-12 fits on. For that we have the # AM10140 which is a radial trailer tire size. This would basically be just .8 inches taller overall so it would fit and work well.

  • Looking for 12 Inch Wheel/Tire Combo With High Speed Rating Suited to Hot Temperatures
For a 12 inch wheel/tire combo, I'd recommend the Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 tire on a 12 inch powder coated steel wheel, part # AM35354. This is a radial tire that will run cooler than a bias ply at highway speeds, however the tire is rated for a maximum speed of 65 mph.

  • Will a 145/80-12 Trailer Tire Fit in Place of a 4.80-12 Trailer Tire
All of the 4.80-12 trailer tires are going to be bias ply tires but I have good news for you. A 145/80-12 trailer tire will fit the same size wheel width as the 4.80-12. But the 145 will be approximately 0.8 inches wider and 0.8 inches taller than the 4.80-12 tires. So you need to make sure that there is enough space between the existing tires and the trailer all around the tire to use the slightly larger size. For a radial 145/80-12 you can use # AM10130. It is rated for 1,220 pounds...

  • Recommended Black Wheels and Larger Tires to Replace 4.80x12 Tires
Jumping from 12 inch wheels to 14 inch wheels is a large jump. You'd me moving from a diameter of 20.5 inches to about 26.3 inches. If you have the room, that will work but you do need to have about 4 inches above your tire for proper suspension movement (deflection). My recommendation is to stay with your 12 inch wheels and use the Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Black Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR D # AM35354. This does give you a slightly higher load rating, but...

  • Replacement 145/12 Trailer Tires and Wheel for Rockwood Freedom Pop Up
Wheel diameter is not measured using the overall diameter. It is actually the diameter inside where the tire sits. You have 12 inch wheels; the tire size also indicates this. Tire and wheel combo # AM35354 will fit but you will want the tire construction type and load range to be the same for all of the tires on the trailer. If you are replacing all of them then it isn't an issue provided all of the news ones are the same type and load range. But if you are just replacing 1 tire then it...

  • ST145/80-12 Wheel and Tire Recommendation for a 5.30-12 Wheel and Tire
The Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Black Mod Wheel # AM35354 will be about 1/2 an inch shorter than your current 5.30-12 tire so it that regard it would work perfectly fine. Now the included wheel is designed to attach to a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern hub. If that is what your trailer has this wheel would work great. I attached a help article on determining bolt patterns for you to check out as well. If you had a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern you would instead want...

  • Can 145/12 Trailer Tires be Used in Place of 5.30-12 Trailer Tires
The difference in section width between a 5.30-12 and a 145/12 is just 0.1 inches. Only half of that is applied towards the trailer. On wheel and tire combo # AM35354 the wheel is a black mod wheel with a zero offset meaning that the mounting surface of the wheel is in the dead center equal distance from either sidewall. Both tire sizes fit the same wheel size so if you just wanted to go to radial tires then you could use # AM10130 for a load range D rated for 1,220 pounds at 65 psi....

If you go up to 175/80-13 sized tires, like # they will be about 1-1/2 inches larger in diameter and about 1/2 inch wider. You want at least 3 inches between the tread and fender and an inch between the sidewall to the inside of the wheel well. If you have the clearance it will be better to go with the larger tire than the smaller. If you go down to the 145/R12, like # AM35354, or the 5.30-12 like # AM35354, you'll have tires that are about an inch smaller in diameter and about a...

For a wheel and tire that has a 5.30-12 you would want the # AM30859 instead. Now the # AM35354 that you referenced is a very similar size and is a radial tire so it would be a better setup for you. The answer to your question will depend on whether your wheels are hub centric or lug centric.
