Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Kenda Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - AM31952 Review

Today we're going to be reviewing part number AM31952. This is the Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with a 13" Galvanized Wheel. This special trailer tire design is going to couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. This is created specifically for trailers, so it's not intended to be used on other types of vehicles. The construction is going to feature double steel belts and full nylon plies that are going to combine for superior function and a long life. It's also going to feature a computer-generated tread design and premium rubber-compound materials. That are going to provide superior traction in wet or dry conditions.

It has a really nice 8-Spoke steel wheel design. It's going to be galvanized to resist rust and corrosion. The tire-and-wheel assembly meets Department of Transportation specifications. The dimension of the rim, it's going to give us a 13" diameter with a 4 1/2". With the bolt pattern, it's 5 on 4 1/2. That simply means that we have 5 bolt holes and the distance that we have from the center of one bolt hole going directly across to the center area between the two bolt holes on the opposite side is 4 1/2".

We do have some diagrams on the product's product page to help you determine your bolt pattern on your trailer wheel. This is going to have a lug size of a half inch, with a pilot diameter of 3.19". That's just the diameter of the center hole here that fits over the hub on the trailer. The tire size is ST175/80R13, it's going to give us a section width from outer edge to outer edge of 7". An outer diameter from outer edge to outer edge when fully inflated of 24.1". The tire is going to offer a capacity of 1,360 lbs at 50 PSI.

The load range is C because it has a 6 ply rating. That's going to do it for today's review of part number AM31952. This is the Kenda Karrier Radial Trailer Tire with a 13" Galvanized Wheel. .

Great price, great service, and with the U-bolt fastener the tire and rim for my boat trailer qualified for free shipping....couldn't be happier 348624

I purchased an old utility trailer to haul my golf cart, the tires were mismatched and the wheels where rusty, so I got in touch with etrailer to see what I could find to fit the trailer. They had many combinations, with load limits, size etc. to choose from. I got two wheels with tires, just what I wanted for less than $200 including shipping to Idaho. My local tire dealer wanted $135 for each. Perfect fit, with great follow up from etrailer to make sure everything was good. 426963

Blew out left bearings and ruined tire sidewall, yikes! Took this opportunity to move leaf springs from underneath axle to on top gaining 3+ inches then up-size tires and wheels from 12 inch to ST175/R13 inch. tires on Galvanized wheels. Lowest strength component is 2,000 lbs. axle but on original trailer configuration much load would sit fenders down onto tires, less than 1 inch clearance. Now you can see in photos there is about 3 inches clearance with ATV loaded on. Have more ground clearance and trailer is almost bubble level after raising hitch point about 2 inches. I expect galvanized wheels to maintain good looks and functionality for many years to come. Now I gotta paint the trailer, black this time. 175583

I am sure the tire and wheel will function fine after these go to a tire shop to be balanced. I was a bit upset to unpack these to find that they had no weights on the rim which tells me they are not balanced. One other thing that I am not happy about is the finish on the wheel. Very sharp jagged edges around bolt holes and cutouts. They did not take pride in the finish of the wheel before the galvanizing process either which is very blotchy and far from a smooth. I am half tempted to return the product for these reasons. Will sleep on it and make decision tomorrow. Shipping was fast, and the tires are nice 681505

Trailer tires are not generally balanced with wheel weights like automobile tires and wheels are balanced. Typically the tires and wheels are mounted so that the high spot on the tire is aligned with the low spot on the wheel.

1996 Parker Tilt 4.5 x 9. Had 12” wheels. Put these 13” ones on. Had to gain some lift by changing leaf spring hangers. From 2 3/8 to 3 3/8. Tire went on but very close to fender, and offset a little. We cut orig fender welds, gained 2” lift on each fender side by way of 2” angle iron. See pics. Not bad for two rural Southern boys in the barn with saws, grinders, and wire feed welder. Easier to gain 4 to 5 inches lift by flipping axle and put leaf on top, But, this is a Tilt trailer. The tilted bed would be steep and tilt beam may run out of pivot space. Packaging & delivery was outstanding. 746714

Tire looks fine, Galvanized wheel looks like it was done without much if any cleaning or prep work. very rough and blotchy finish. Since this is being carried as a spare, I am not as much concerned about looks as function. Hopefully if needed, it will be fine. 726022

This tire and wheel from etrailer is cheaper than replacing a tire at a Local Tire Store. Delivered in a very few days with correct pressure in tires. As always, superior quality product and service. Finally I have gotten trailer tires that are round with a round rim, instead of having a rim with a 3/16 inch flat spot that ends up distorting the tire by about 3/8 inch and shaking my boat to death. Highest recommendation for your tires and rims. Very quick shipping. Thank you. 645128

  • Can I Upgrade from 12 Inch Wheels to 13 Inch Wheels on a Boat Trailer
Generally speaking, it is not a huge deal to upgrade one size (12" to 13") so long as you have clearance but the other thing to make note of is the surface area on the hub. If you have a 2,000 lb trailer axle then your hub is likely only rated for use with 8"-12" wheels but if you have a 3,500 lb trailer axle then your hub is likely rated for use with 13"-15" wheels. However, there are hubs for either axle that will allow you to upgrade/degrade wheels so if you can confirm your axle capacity...

  • Do Trailer Wheel and Tire Combinations Come Balanced
The ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM31952, is received from our supplier with the tire mounted on the wheel, the supplier does not balance the combination, but when the tire is installed on the wheel they will line the high (heavy) spot on the tire with the low (light) spot on the wheel. This does not completely balance the tire and wheel combination but it does eliminate any excessive out of balance condition. In most cases this method of lining up the...

  • Can 12 inch Trailer Tire Be Upgraded to 13 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire
An ST145/R12 tire like the Kenda Karrier S-Trail # AM10140 measures 21.3 inches in diameter when inflated and is 5.7 wide. The smallest 13 inch tire is ST175/80R13 quite a bit bigger, measuring 24.1 inches in diameter and 7 inches wide. You'll need to measure to determine if you have clearance. If so, and if you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern there are a number of options available for this tire with different styles of wheel (if you are unsure of your exact bolt pattern you can...

  • Do Trailer Tires Need to Be Balanced
It is not a requirement to balance trailer tires like you do for your vehicle tires. The reason for this is because the trailer tires have a tendency to "throw weights". This means that the weights come off the wheels. This can happen for a number of reasons, but it is not uncommon for the weights to be thrown off when towing a trailer empty (the trailer bounces excessively because of the no load conditions) or when making very tight turns on tandem or tri axle trailers. Furthermore,...

  • Can an ST185/80R13 Trailer Tire be Replaced with an ST175/80R13 Trailer Tire
If the trailer is supposed to have 185/80-13 tires on it, then you should stick with that tire size and use # AM3S334. This is the correct size tire with a galvanized wheel. The only difference is this is a bias tire and not a radial. A bias tire the cords inside run at a 32 degree angle from the direction of travel and on a radial tire, the cords run 90 degrees across the width of the tire. If you go with a smaller 175 tire and wheel combo, it will be about a half inch more narrow,...

  • Changing ST185/80-13 Tire Size on Shorelander Boat Trailer
Because the size of both tires is so similar, you can certainly use the # AM31952 as a replacement. An ST185/80-13 tire will typically be slightly larger in diameter and width than an ST175/80-13 tire, but only by around 1/4 inch. Although the # AM31952 has a higher load rating than your existing tires, this higher rating will not provide any additional capacity over and above the capacity of your axle. For instance, lets say that your boat trailer uses a 2,000 lb axle. Two of the...

  • Can a Trailer with 12 Inch Tires and Wheels be Upgraded to 14 Inch Tires and Wheels
You do not necessarily have to change the axles or suspension to go to a larger tire size. What you will need to do though is determine how much space there is from the inside tire side wall and the trailer frame and how much space is available above the tire (if the trailer has fenders that could interfere with a larger size). Then you can determine if a larger tire will even fit. If you could look at the tires you have now and tell me the size I can tell you how much larger a 14 inch...

  • What to Consider when Going from a 175/80B13 Tire Size to a 185/80R13
The difference in diameter between the two tire sizes you listed is .3 of an inch. I highly doubt that difference would cause an issue, but just to be safe you should still check to be sure that when the suspension of the trailer compresses that would not cause interference. You also will be going from a bias ply tire to a radial which is also an upgrade since radials tend to run cooler and wear better. I attached a couple helpful FAQ articles on trailer tires for you to check out also.

You should have no problem going with a 185/80R13 tire to replace the 175/80D13 that you currently have. These sizes both fit the same size rims and the 185 would only be about .3 of an inch taller, so unless you had some super tight fender clearances it would fit just fine. Also the D13 in the old tire size indicates that you had a bias ply tire, the R13 in the new size you are considering is an upgrade since this means it is a radial tire. However, in the 185 size there is only bias...

The next size down would be a 145/80-12 (Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10140 with Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel part # AM20134) and you will only loose around 1/2" with this size.
