Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

I ordered a pair of LOADSTAR K399 205/65 -10 Load Range E bias tires late on Friday evening and they arrived before noon the following Tuesday , a day quicker than expected. The tires arrived well packaged and in great shape. I haven't had a chance to have the tires mount yet, but I don't anticipate any problems at this point. Although it can be a challenge to locate a vendor that carries these size tires, they are exact OEM replacement tires to fit my Acme EZE-Tow car dolly. A job well done etrailer! 473574

Comments

I mounted them, with balance beads, and they have driven and worn wonderfully on my car dolly, both loaded and unloaded. I would definitely purchase them again and recommend them to all.

Received the items today and at first look they look great. The tires seem to be of high quality as does the tire/wheel combo. The tire/wheel combo come ready to roll and full if air. These are going on a 24' pontoon trailer that will be going from Ga to Va and back to Ga in October so I will try and remember to update this review as soon as I get back. So far etralier has done another outstanding job 227180

We were on a trip & 2,000-mi. from home. I kept having to add air to keep the pressure near 90-psi as recommended by the car-dolly mfgr; then, noticed several spits of approx. 1" in both of the Kenda tires on our car-dolly. So, I ordered a pair of Kenda tires from etrailer.com to replace them with, to avoid possible problems getting home with our family car. After arriving safely home, I found info online, that etrailer had been replacing (for free) leaking Kenda tires, with splits in them. I sent a couple of photos of my tires in an email, asking for relief. etrailer sent me two new replacement tires (for free). I also found online that the car-dolly mfgr. has now changed its recommendation to only carry 75-psi in the tires! Thank you, etrailer.com! 270629

Comments

Very well! We have taken a 4,500-mile trip with the car on the dolly, with the new replacement Kenda tires, using the lower tire pressure, with no problems. Thanks, again for replacing those leaking tires at no cost to me!

I am very happy with this tire. Use it on a 12' popup. I tow in SC where the roads are horrible and covered with potholes. These tires have taken a beating and still held up fine. The E rating with thicker sidewall gives me more assurance and is sized properly for my load. Tire pulls nice and quiet also. Visually seems to be high quality. I would buy it again. 10465

As always, etrailer pulled through for me again. I ordered trailer tires in Load Range D., but the supplier was out of them. etrailer offered the Load Range E tire for the same price because they were available in their warehouse. Thank you etrailer! I received the tires quickly and mounted them for my long road trip. Thank you again! 234442

After 10 years, my pontoon trailer tires were no longer safe. Local trailer dealers only offered tires on rims. I had the rims and the means to change. Saved $75 that way, even after tipping my local auto mechanic $10 to swap them out. etrailer website is friendly, shipping was fast (3 days ground), and selection was awesome. Suggestion for etrailer: refer customers to trailer manufacturer web sites for proper lug nut torque specs. In my case, it was Load Rite and 85-95 ft.lbs. 123572

The tires arrived promptly and in perfect condition. The look great on my wheels. Since they are for my trailer, I have not had an opportunity to road test them, but I'm sure they will be fine. 456249

This is one of the best companies I have ever dealt with. I searched the Internet for the best prices, and they had them. Then they included free shipping. And I got them within three days. It was not going well. No one was able to even order a tire for a 10 inch rim. So I did my own search and found the exact tire that came with my car dolly as original equipment. Theses are the exact tires I needed. Actually the second time. Maybe I don’t know how to look for tires around town because I couldn’t find what I needed locally. I could find the size but not the rating. Anyway etrailer has always had just what I needed any needed support help. Thank you etrailer! 692877

I just had these mounted. I have not put them on the trailer yet. But just hands on and visual inspection these tires are going to be just what I needed. The pontoon I bought a few years back came with under weight rated tires on it. They were the cheap ones you grab already mounted at places like [local big box stores]. They were C rated. I could literally see the tires wearing after a round trip to the ramp which is only about 25 miles total round trip at most. After the trip to the ramp they were always hot to the touch. One developed a bubble and that's why I ordered these. etrailer had the best price I found anywhere for E rated tires. Shipping was quick as well. They came in a box that protected them. All other tires I have ever gotten were taped up and loose. When these tires are mounted they have a flat look like a tire should not the rounded ballooned out look that the lighted duty ones have. The bead and side wall is extremely thick. These tires weigh several more pounds each than the old C rated ones. Some of that was the tread worn down but most of that is due to the extra plys and rubber used in them. I will try to update once they are mounted and I have towed with them. 669316

Product was exactly as described and seems to be working as it should, will definitely be using these guys again. 606816

Well, I am really not sure how to rate this tire.... but what I can do is share my experience. I purchased these tires for my Triton 14' aluminum trailer for an upcoming trip of about 700 miles round trip. Worked fine on the way down with no load... coming back, not so much. I had no more than 700 lbs on the trailer when about 3/4 of the way back home the driver side tire blew out doing 70 MPH on a six lane highway with me in the middle lane. Busted my aluminum rim when it hit the pavement. I had verified before I left that each tire had 90 PSI in each as stated.... so, needless to say I am now SUPER leery of the other tire I have on the other side. There was no warning prior, no weaving, no pull, just a loud POP and that was it.... 595525

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Tires and Wheels

Do you have a question about this Tires and Wheel?

  • Upgrading 20.5x8-10 Tires on Pontoon Boat Trailer to Higher Load Capacity Tires
  • The modern equivalent to the 20.5x8.0-10 size tires on your pontoon trailer is the 205/65-10 size, which would fit your existing wheels without issue. The highest rated trailer tire we have available in this size is the Kenda Loadstar K399 Bias # AM1HP56, which features a maximum load of 1,650 pounds at 90 psi. This would give you a combined load of 3,300 for a nice safety margin with your trailer that weighs under 3,000 pounds when loaded. This particular tire does also have an excellent...

These and most other special trailer tires are intended to be inflated at all times to their maximum cold pressure indicated on the sidewall. As a tire warms up from operation its pressure will also naturally rise somewhat. Increases in ambient temperature...

  • Tire Recommendation for Size 20.5x8-10 on Coleman Fleetwood PopUp Camper
  • The tire size of 20.5x8-10 is the same as the size 205/65-10 which for that we have the Loadstar part # AM1HP56 which has a weight capacity of 1,650 lbs at 90 psi and a higher speed rating of 87 mph so it's overall a really great option. This is the largest size for a 10 inch wheel though so it's probably easiest to stick with this option. Going to a larger size would require a new wheel and tire combo like the # AM31202 which is a tire size of ST145/R12 and is only about .8 of an inch taller.

  • Will there be Any Problem Using a Load Range E Trailer Tire Instead of a Load Range D
  • The ride might feel a little more stiff with the higher capacity load range E tire. And you would want to make all of the tires the same load range or you could see uneven tire wear. Other than that there isn't really any issue with using an E instead of a D. The Higher load range E tire will likely require more air pressure. For example on a 206/65-10 load range D tire such as # AM1HP54 it will have a rating of 1,330 pounds at 70psi. But the load range E in the same size, # AM1HP56,...

  • Replacement Trailer Tire for Size 20.5x8-10
  • The modern tire size equivalent to the 20.5 x 8 - 10 is the 205/65-10 which is basically an exact replacement for what you have. The most popular tire we have in that size is the part # AM1HP56 which would work great.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Tire Wear
  • Tire wear isn't typically caused by insufficient weight capacity of the tire. What type of wear are you seeing on the tire? It might be that you have an alignment or suspension issue that's causing the problems. I'd hate to recommend a bigger tire only two have one of the issues mentioned cause the same damage to your tire size 205/65-10 like the # AM1HP56. I'd also recommend you verify that you had the tires inflated to their max psi listed on the tire sidewall as well.

  • Tire and Wheel Recommendation To Replace 20.5x8x10 Trailer Tires and Wheels
  • For the 20.5x8x10, the new size is a 205/65-10. This would be the better tire for the long drives you plan on because it is a wider tire that will offer more stability. You can also get higher load capacities with the wider tire in this case if needed. I recommend the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM1HP56, for just a tire. This tire has a load capacity of 1,650 pounds at 90 psi. It is designed to fit on 10 by 6 inch rims. Trailer tires should be inflated to their maximum psi rating...

  • Replacements for a 20.5 x 8 - 10 Trailer Tire
  • The modern equivalent of a 20.5 x 8 - 10 tire is a 205/65-10 tire. These two tires are going to have the exact same diameter of 20.5" therefore, you can absolutely use the 20.5 x 8 - 10 tires you have now as a spare. For a 205/65-10 tire, I recommend the Loadstar (Kenda) K399 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM1HP56. This tire has a bias ply, load range E (1,650 lbs) and speed rating N (87 mph). It also comes with a 2-year warranty. I have attached a review video of the tire in addition to our...

  • What is the Speed Rating For Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 205/65-10
  • The trailer tires that we carry, like # AM1HP56, are rated for up to 65 miles per hour. I do not recommend running then any faster than that because they can build up excess heat. Since trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall than vehicle tires they also need to be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire. If under inflated this will lead to excessive heat build up and the tire can fail. I have included a link to our tire FAQ for you.

  • Smallest Tire Available with Capacity Greater Than 1600 lbs for Pontoon Boat Trailer
  • If you compare two tires of the same manufacturer and tire size, load range B tires should all have the same capacity, same for load range C or D. A 205/65-10 tire like part # AM1HP56 has a 1650 lb capacity at 90 psi. Two tires would give you a 3300 lb capacity. Wheel/tire combos are also available. For a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, use part # AM3H470 or for a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, use part # AM3H490. To get a higher capacity than that, you'd need to go with a larger tire like a 215/75-14,...

  • Replacement Tire Recommendation to Replace 20.5x8.0-10 Tires Load Range E
  • I did some checking and the 20.5x8-10 tire size that you referenced is the same as 205/65-10 so the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire # AM1HP52 should fit well, but may not have enough capacity. Since you have a load range E tire currently I would recommend you replace this tire with one with the same capacity. For that I would recommend the Loadstar K399 Trailer Tire # AM1HP56. This tire has a load range of E and should work well for you. I attached a couple FAQ articles on trailer...
