Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Kenda Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - AM10303 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire, any load range E. This is a special trailer tire design that'll provide the strength of a bias tire, as well as the durability and stability of a radial tire. This is created specifically for trailers, it's not intended for use on other vehicles. They use the double steel belts, full nylon plies combine for a nice superior function and long tire life. The tread design is a nice computer generated tread design and uses premium rubber compound materials. Give you maximum traction in wet or dry conditions. Give you a very smooth ride, excellent stability at highway speeds.

This is an ST tire, which means special trailer. It does meet the Department of Transportation specifications. A few specs on this tire: it is designed to mount onto a wheel size of 15 inches by 6 inches wide, 15 by 6 and 1/2 inches wide, and 15 by 7 inches wide. The tire size, which will be stamped on the side wall, right down here, it'll say ST for special trailer, 225/75R15 the R means it's a radial tire. Section width on this tire is 8.9 inches.

Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated, is 28.4. this is a load range E, which means it's a 10 ply rated tire. Has a maximum load capacity of 2,830 pounds at 80 PSI. One last thing I do want to mention is all your new trailers are coming stamped with a tire speed rating now. A speed rating on a tire is always labeled with a letter designation. Where you'll find that is if you go right where the size is that we read off, right after it, you'll see right up here, there's 2 numbers, which are the load index and then right after it is the letter M.

A speed rating M is 81 miles per hour. So this tire does have an 81 mile per hour speed limit. That should do it for the review on the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire in a load range E.

Service at trailer is outstanding. Adam helped me locate the rims and tires for my 1951 Spartan Imperial Mansion. He worked directly with the supplier of the product to find me what I needed -- black rims and tires. They had them delivered to me in two days at no charge. You can't beat etrailer.com for value and service. I'll be buying more from them for sure. 436178

New tires arrived VERY quickly. Amazingly fast delivery .......5 tires arrived in individual boxes, very impressive delivery system!! Tires appear to be very heavy duty re sidewalls, I did read the reviews before ordering and am hoping for good results. Not exactly happy that the build dates on the tires are over one year old..........and yes I did read the rebuttle to someone elses pointing out the one year old thing. Tires made in China. Hoping for the best based upon many positive reviews. 567758

Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or so before we receive them. The tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they sit in a warehouse for a period of time until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can sometimes take a month or more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under somewhat controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were a bit older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years, assuming they are not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The tire you purchased is a Karrier Load Star, which is the brand name of a tire manufactured by Kenda.

My son had good things to say about these tires and I wanted to try a different brand after having some issues with the ones I was using. I checked with my local guy and he couldn't get these. Found them on etrailer and they had the lowest prices with free shipping. Problem was I needed them for the weekend and you know how shipping goes, they are never there when they say they will be. Well I spent $25 extra to get them here in three days. I could not believe it, they were here in three days! Must have been that two hours after I ordered them I already had a tracking number, that must have helped! I got them mounted up with my new valve stems and they are looking good. 288581

I went on a trip for 2 weeks and 4480 towing with my Airstream and these tires handled well. No problems with them at all. When not in use the trailer is parked in a garage, so not subject to any elements. The tires held well, no air pressure loss and did as expected for a trailer tire 336359

I have not mounted the tires yet, although I have had good experiences with Kenda tires in the past. But the prompt and courteous service that Judy and George provided is second to none. They quickly responded about a price match and when I turned around the tires had already been shipped and were here about two days later. Being new to the fifth wheel camping world, I have found etrailer's prices to be great and the instructional videos are a huge resource. Can't say enough about the great service. Thanks again!- Erik 434311

It has been one year since I bought these tires. So far so good. They are working great. 634018

The service from etrailer for the Kenda/Karrier ST225/75Rx15 trailer tires was excellent. They shipped and arrived as promised. The price point was good as well as compared to others who sell these tires. These Load Range E will be used on my 25' enclosed car hauler trailer, replacing the factory tires that lasted only 18 months. The trailer is headed to Florida and back, from Pennsylvania, in March, so they will get a good workout. 598385

Do you have a question about this Tires and Wheel?

  • Trailer Tire Load Ranges, Speed Ratings and Sizes to Avoid Blowouts
  • Special trailer tires in any given size are available in various load ranges as you noted, but they also can have different speed ratings too. Driving a tire faster than its rated speed can lead to failure just like overloading it past its weight capacity can. Both conditions lead to excess heat and that is what typically leads to a tire failure. Since your 18K trailer has 3 axles and 6 tires each tire should be rated for approximately 3000-lbs if you routinely operate the trailer at...

  • Replacing 235/75R15 Tires on a Forest River r-pod
  • The ST235/75R15 tires you referenced are not a standard sized trailer tire, hence the difficulty in finding them. Your best bet to find tires now and in the future would be to replace those with 225/75R15 tires, which will be extremely close in overall dimensions, as I'll outline for you below. 235/75R15 tires are 9.3 inches wide with a height of 28.8 inches. 225/75R15 tires are 8.9 inches wide with a height of 28.3 inches. You can get 225/75R15 tires in load ranges C, D, or E....

  • Speed Rating of Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10303
  • The Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire, # AM10303, is going to be rated for speeds up to 65 miles per hour. This is going to be the same for all trailer tires unless otherwise stated. Exceeding the 65 mph limit can cause heat to build up in the tire and cause it to fail.

  • The ST225/75R15 Kenda Karrier # AM10303 Load Range E tire that you referenced does have a Speed Rating of M (81 mph). Please note that you will want to keep the cold psi rating at 80 psi to achieve the 2,830 lbs max load rating. This will also allow you to safely operate your trailer within that 81 mph speed rating. If your tires are under inflated then you run the risk of having a blow out due to excessive heat build up, and if they are over inflated then you would see center tread...

  • Should Load Range D or E Kenda Tires be Used for a 5,200 lb Axle
  • If you are wanting to stick with Kenda tires with the ST225/75R15 size then you will need to go with the Load Range E # AM10303. You always want your tires to be rated for at least the same weight as your axles. The Load Range D # AM10256 has a weight rating of 2,540 lbs at 65 psi which means when using 2 of them your max weight is 5,080 lbs. The Load Range E has a weight rating of 2,830 lbs at 80 psi which means that 2 of them have the combined rating of 5,660 lbs making your 5,200 lb...

  • Can Trailer Tires be Inflated to Lower PSI than Listing on Sidewall
  • Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum air pressure as listed on the tire's sidewall. I cannot recommend inflating your new tires to below their maximum psi, as the amount of weight they are designed to support will also be reduced. Your ST225/75R15 sized tires with a Load Range E have a maximum capacity of 2,830 pounds at 80 psi. Inflating them to 65 psi will essentially reduce their maximum capacity to an unknown number, which can potentially cause you to overload them...

A trailer tire sized 205/75-15, like # AM10245, will have a diameter of almost 27-5/16 inches and a width of a little over 8 inches. A tire sized 225/75-15, like # AM10303, will have a width at almost 9 inches and diameter that is almost 28-13/32 inches. The new tire will be almost an 1 inch wider and 1 inch taller than your current...

  • Upgraded 5th Wheel Trailer Wheels/Tires to Avoid Blowouts on Long Distance Highway Travel
  • Today a tire's ply rating does not necessarily match its actual ply construction. This is due to improved materials and manufacturing technology allowing, for example, a 5-ply tire to perform like an 8-ply used to. Most trailer tires these days are made in China, but they have to meet the very same DOT standards as all others, including those tires made in the U.S. The highest rated ST225/75R15 radial trailer tire we offer is the Kenda Karrier # AM10303, which has a Load Range E...

  • What is the Diameter of a ST225/75R15 Tire in Centimeters
  • For a ST225/75R15 tire such as the Karrier # AM10303, the diameter is 28.3 inches, or 71.88 centimeters. I have added a link to a help article on measuring trailer tires, as well as a link to each of our 225/75-15 tires.

  • Changing Load Range D Trailer Tire To Load Range E
  • Before switching to a higher load rated tire, like a load range E, you will want to check the weight capacity on your trailer wheels. If you have a steel wheel, the capacity should be stamped on the backside lip of the wheel. If you have an alloy wheel, this rating should be stamped on the back side of the wheel spokes. A ST225/75R15 load range E tire like # AM10303 will have a capacity of 2,830 lbs at 80 psi. If the wheel has a similar weight capacity you will be good to go. Another...

  • Recommended Tire Size for Upgrading Tires From 7.00-15LT on My Horse Trailer
  • Good news, I can help you find a tire for your Sundown Horse Trailer. The 205/90-15 is a close tire size to the 7.00-15. The closest size to a 7.00x15 tire that we offer would be a 225/75-15. One 225/75-15 tire that could work for you is the Kenda # AM10303, this tire would be slightly shorter and a little wider than your 7.00-15 tire. Something to keep in mind is that a 7.00-15 tire typically fits 15 x 5-1/2 inch wheel. The ST225/75R15 tire size will fit on 15 inch diameter rims...

  • Recommended E-Rated Trailer Tires for Coachman Toy Hauler
  • The tire I recommend for you is Kenda, though the specific one you'll need depends on the size you are looking for. The Kenda Karrier # AM10303 is a 225/75-15 tire; the Kenda # AM10248 is is a 235/80-16 tire; and the Kenda # AM10295 is sized 235/85-16. These tires are nearly universally praised by our customers, with nearly 500 reviews giving them an average very close to 5 stars, which is impressive considering how difficult it is to get that many people to agree on much of anything. So...

  • Recommendation for Replacing 7.00-15 Tires on Trailer
  • As you mentioned, the 225/75-15 tire size is the next closest size we have available to your existing 7.00-15 tires. As you also referenced, the thing you will need to look at is the size of your current wheels, as the 7.00-15 tire will typically fit a 15 x 5-1/2 inch wheel. A 225/75-15 tire like the Kenda # AM10303 is compatible with 15 inch diameter wheels that have a width of 6, 6-1/2 or 7 inches. They simply will not fit onto a wheel that has a width of less than 6 inches so I cannot...

  • Will 225/75/15 Tires fit on Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel?
  • The Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel # AM20537 is 15" x 6" and it is highly likely that your 225/75-15 tires are going to fit. Every 225/75-15 tire we carry, such as the Kenda # AM10303 will fit on a 15" x 6" tire so it would make more than a little sense that your tires also fit. I've added a link to a video review of this wheel for you to take a look at.

  • Can ST205/75/D15 Size Trailer Tires be Replaced with ST225/75/R15 Size
  • You can change your ST205/75/D15 trailer tires to a larger ST225/75/R15 size IF your 15-inch rims are either 6-inches or 6-1/2-inches wide AND IF you have sufficient clearance around the tires for the increased width and overall diameter of the ST225/75/R15. A 205/75-15 tire when mounted and inflated has an overall diameter of about 27-inches. A tire in size ST225/75/R15 has an overall diameter of 28.4-inches, about an inch-and-a-half larger. The larger tire will also be about 3/4-inch...

  • The Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel, part # AM20522, does not come with a pre-installed valve stem. If you are needing a replacement valve stem that can withstand the pressure of 80 psi then you can use part # AM20904 to do so. The Dexstar wheel has a weight capacity of 2,050 lbs and will work well with your 25/75R15 Load Range E tire, like the Kenda Karrier # AM10303, at 80 psi.

  • What is the Recommended Tire Spacing on Tandem Axles?
  • There are no industry standards for minimum spacing between the forward and aft tires, and the 3-1/2 inches of space you referred to will be plenty. Should you need the larger weight capacity the larger tires offer, you will be fine upgrading from 205/75R15 to 225/75R15. Something else to consider is the clearance between the inside wall of the tire and the trailer frame because the larger tires will be nearly an inch wider, so be sure you have at least three or four inches of clearance...
