Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Kenda Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - AM10303 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire, any load range E. This is a special trailer tire design that'll provide the strength of a bias tire, as well as the durability and stability of a radial tire. This is created specifically for trailers, it's not intended for use on other vehicles. They use the double steel belts, full nylon plies combine for a nice superior function and long tire life. The tread design is a nice computer generated tread design and uses premium rubber compound materials. Give you maximum traction in wet or dry conditions. Give you a very smooth ride, excellent stability at highway speeds.

This is an ST tire, which means special trailer. It does meet the Department of Transportation specifications. A few specs on this tire: it is designed to mount onto a wheel size of 15 inches by 6 inches wide, 15 by 6 and 1/2 inches wide, and 15 by 7 inches wide. The tire size, which will be stamped on the side wall, right down here, it'll say ST for special trailer, 225/75R15 the R means it's a radial tire. Section width on this tire is 8.9 inches.

Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated, is 28.4. this is a load range E, which means it's a 10 ply rated tire. Has a maximum load capacity of 2,830 pounds at 80 PSI. One last thing I do want to mention is all your new trailers are coming stamped with a tire speed rating now. A speed rating on a tire is always labeled with a letter designation. Where you'll find that is if you go right where the size is that we read off, right after it, you'll see right up here, there's 2 numbers, which are the load index and then right after it is the letter M.

A speed rating M is 81 miles per hour. So this tire does have an 81 mile per hour speed limit. That should do it for the review on the Kenda Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire in a load range E.

Service at trailer is outstanding. Adam helped me locate the rims and tires for my 1951 Spartan Imperial Mansion. He worked directly with the supplier of the product to find me what I needed -- black rims and tires. They had them delivered to me in two days at no charge. You can't beat etrailer.com for value and service. I'll be buying more from them for sure. 436178

I have not mounted the tires yet, although I have had good experiences with Kenda tires in the past. But the prompt and courteous service that Judy and George provided is second to none. They quickly responded about a price match and when I turned around the tires had already been shipped and were here about two days later. Being new to the fifth wheel camping world, I have found etrailer's prices to be great and the instructional videos are a huge resource. Can't say enough about the great service. Thanks again!- Erik 434311

Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or so before we receive them. The tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they sit in a warehouse for a period of time until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can sometimes take a month or more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under somewhat controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were a bit older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years, assuming they are not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The tire you purchased is a Karrier Load Star, which is the brand name of a tire manufactured by Kenda.

I went on a trip for 2 weeks and 4480 towing with my Airstream and these tires handled well. No problems with them at all. When not in use the trailer is parked in a garage, so not subject to any elements. The tires held well, no air pressure loss and did as expected for a trailer tire 336359

My son had good things to say about these tires and I wanted to try a different brand after having some issues with the ones I was using. I checked with my local guy and he couldn't get these. Found them on etrailer and they had the lowest prices with free shipping. Problem was I needed them for the weekend and you know how shipping goes, they are never there when they say they will be. Well I spent $25 extra to get them here in three days. I could not believe it, they were here in three days! Must have been that two hours after I ordered them I already had a tracking number, that must have helped! I got them mounted up with my new valve stems and they are looking good. 288581

New tires arrived VERY quickly. Amazingly fast delivery .......5 tires arrived in individual boxes, very impressive delivery system!! Tires appear to be very heavy duty re sidewalls, I did read the reviews before ordering and am hoping for good results. Not exactly happy that the build dates on the tires are over one year old..........and yes I did read the rebuttle to someone elses pointing out the one year old thing. Tires made in China. Hoping for the best based upon many positive reviews. 567758

good tires have on heavy toy hauler when we changed form original tires to these you could feel the lessened rolling resistance , trailer moved much easier. Have gone a several long distance trips with these 2,000 miles plus with these towing a loaded heavy trailer . They handle weight well and have no bad traits. Picked up a spare tire from etrailer going on another trip a spare was original 12 yrs old. Hopefully i never use bought load range E and have them set at max inflation pressure. 716145

Kenda Karrier Load Star tires were highly recommended by other trailer owners to me. These tires are load rated E, the best load tire for an 15" tire, and they are speed rated M, which I believe is 81 MPH. As far as I know, only the Goodyear Endurance tire is speed rated N, which comes at a higher cost. It is too early to tell you just how good they are, yet I have high confidence in them. 662395

The service from etrailer for the Kenda/Karrier ST225/75Rx15 trailer tires was excellent. They shipped and arrived as promised. The price point was good as well as compared to others who sell these tires. These Load Range E will be used on my 25' enclosed car hauler trailer, replacing the factory tires that lasted only 18 months. The trailer is headed to Florida and back, from Pennsylvania, in March, so they will get a good workout. 598385

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Tires and Wheels

Do you have a question about this Tires and Wheel?

  • Should Load Range D or E Kenda Tires be Used for a 5,200 lb Axle
  • If you are wanting to stick with Kenda tires with the ST225/75R15 size then you will need to go with the Load Range E # AM10303. You always want your tires to be rated for at least the same weight as your axles. The Load Range D # AM10256 has a weight rating of 2,540 lbs at 65 psi which means when using 2 of them your max weight is 5,080 lbs. The Load Range E has a weight rating of 2,830 lbs at 80 psi which means that 2 of them have the combined rating of 5,660 lbs making your 5,200 lb...

  • Does Load Range of 225/75R15 Trailer Tire Affect Durability
  • That is a good question and it is certainly reasonable to think that might be the case but it actually is not. A ST225/75R15 trailer tire with a load range of D such as the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10256 will last just as long and perform just as well as its equivalent with a load range of E, the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # AM10303. Generally speaking, the higher the load range of tire, the more expensive, so as long as the...

  • Pressure Rating of Valve Stem Included in Taskmaster Steel Modular Trailer Wheel 560655MSPVD
  • On the Taskmaster Steel Modular Trailer Wheel # 560655MSPVD the included rubber valve stem is rated for pressure up to 65-psi. For a rubber valve stem good to 80-psi use part # AM20904; for one good to 100-psi you can use # AM20907, or for a metal valve stem for pressure of 100-psi and above use part # AM20906. A Load Range E-rated ST225/75-15 trailer tire like # AM10303, # LHWL304 or # TR225LRE will need one rated for at least 80-psi.

  • Availability of a 225/75R-15 Tire Mounted on a 15 Inch Wheel With a 5 on 5-1/2 Inch Bolt Pattern
  • A tire mounted on a 15 x 6 rim with a 5 lug on 5-1/2 inch bolt circle isn't something that's very common. We offer a wheel and a tire as a separate item, but not a wheel/tire combo where the tire is already mounted on the wheel. You could purchase the items separately and have your local tire shop mount them for you. For the wheel, the Taskmaster # 560555SWA sounds exactly like what you're looking for. For a radial tire, we offer a load range C as part # AM10251 with a 2120 lb capacity...

  • Recommended Trailer Tire in ST225/75R15 Tire Size
  • The tire you want is part # TR225LRE. This is a radial tire with a weight capacity of 2,830-lb max load at 80 psi and has a high enough speed rating to allow you to travel 70 mph. This tire has a speed rating of 81 mph. Most trailer tires are only rated for 65 MPH.

  • Recommended ST225/75R15 Trailer Tires for 31-Ft 5th Wheel to Avoid Tire Blowouts
  • A trailer tire's worst enemy is heat. Excessive heat will weaken a tire and lead to its premature failure. The most common causes for a trailer tire to overheat are overloading it beyond its rated weight capacity and incorrect inflation pressure. If you replace Load Range E tires with F- or G-rated tires their higher weight capacity will tend to mean reduced operating temperatures, all other things being equal. And of course, all trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum...

  • Does the Dexstar Mini Mod Trailer Wheel # AM20539 Have a Max psi Capacity
  • Wheels, like the Dexstar Wheel # AM20539 that you referenced, actually have a weight rating as opposed to a psi rating. Tires have a psi rating because it corresponds to the weight rating for the tire. For example, the Kenda Karrier # AM10303 is a load range E tire meaning that it has a max load of 2,830 lbs at 80 psi. The aluminum wheel that you referenced, part # AM22646, has a weight capacity of 2,830 lbs. Since you will always be limited by your lowest rated component, if either...

  • Recommendation for 10 Ply Rated Trailer Tire Size ST225/75-15
  • I recommend trailer tire # AM10303 which is an ST225/75-15 tires load range E rated for 2,830 pounds at 80 psi. This tire does have a 10 ply rating. I have linked a video review of this tire for you. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire sidewall. Trailer tires have a thicker sidewall compared to passenger vehicle tires so if under inflated the thicker sidewall will generate excessive heat and lead to tire failure. I have included a link to...

  • Spare Tire Cover Recommendation for ST225/75R15 Tire on Travel Trailer
  • Your ST225/75R-15 spare tire which is mounted on your travel trailer should have an overall diameter of approximately 28-1/2 inches. Once you have verified this measurement, there are numerous options for tire covers to choose from. Most of our tire covers are designed to fit a range of tire sizes so you will just want to choose a cover that will fit the 28-1/2 diameter and you are good to go. My personal favorite is the Rampage Spare Tire Cover, # RA772901, which is made of the...

  • Best ST225/75R15 Trailer Tires for Higher Speed Driving
  • The load and speed ratings of the ST225/75R15 trailer tires your 2017 Dutchman Aspen travel trailer are maximum capacities for the tires themselves. The 75-mph maximum speed of an L-rated tire does not indicate a recommendation to tow a trailer at that speed. Safe towing speeds naturally vary based on the nature of the road (dead-straight flat interstate versus winding two-lane back roads), the weather conditions and the total weight of the truck and trailer as a combined system. Also,...

  • Mixing Load Range E Tires w/ Existing Load Range D Tires on Triple Axle Trailer
  • I wouldn't recommend doing so, especially given the amount of weight your dealing with on a triple axle trailer. If you're referring to the ST225/75-15 tire size, a load range D should be kept inflated to its maximum pressure of 65 psi, while the load range E should be kept inflated to 80 psi. It's easy to forget that not all of the tires need the same air pressure. Having some of the tires inflated incorrectly can lead to an unsafe situation. At the very least, each axle should have...

  • Do Trailer Tires Have Speed Ratings
  • Speed is a huge issue with trailer tires actually. Unless otherwise noted trailer tires are rated as 65 miles per hour as their max speed. Exceeding the speed rating will cause the tire to heat up and fail easier. We do have a couple brands that have higher speed ratings. The Taskmaster radials like the part # C22515D which is an ST225/75R15 like you mentioned has a speed rating of 81 mph. The Lionshead part # LHWL304 has a speed rating of 75 mph and has a 2 year roadside assistance...

  • What is the Closest Trailer Tire Match to Tire Size 31X10.5R15LT
  • The closest trailer tire size to a 31x10.5-15 tire is going to be either a 225/75-15 or a 7.00-15LT. The 225 size is going to be about 8.8 inches wide and 28.4 inches tall. The 7.00-15 size is going to be about 7.8 inches wide and 29.4 inches tall. These sizes also fit on different wheel widths with the 225 fitting on 6 to 7 inch wide wheels and the 7.00 fitting on 5 to 6 inch wide wheels. Based on this it is unlikely that the 7.00 size will fit the same wheel as a 31x10.5-15. A 225...

  • What Info Is Needed to Upgrade a 15 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire to a 16 inch Wheel and Tire
  • Assuming you have the clearance for a slightly larger wheel and tire on your cattle trailer all you really need to know is the bolt pattern of the wheels you currently have so that you can get a wheel that will bolt right up. If you are unsure of the bolt pattern you have on your wheels check out the FAQ article I attached that shows how to determine this. Your trailer will need to have an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern or a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern to go with a 16 inch wheel and tire combo...

  • Recommended E-Rated Trailer Tires for Coachman Toy Hauler
  • The tire I recommend for you is Kenda, though the specific one you'll need depends on the size you are looking for. The Kenda Karrier # AM10303 is a 225/75-15 tire; the Kenda # AM10248 is is a 235/80-16 tire; and the Kenda # AM10295 is sized 235/85-16. These tires are nearly universally praised by our customers, with nearly 500 reviews giving them an average very close to 5 stars, which is impressive considering how difficult it is to get that many people to agree on much of anything. So...
