Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Kenda Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - AM10295 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number AM10295. This is the Kenda Karrier radial trailer tire with a load range of E. Tire size is ST235/85R16. Special trailer tire design is going to provide the strength of a bias tire, as well as the durability and stability of a radial tire. This is created specifically for trailers, so it's not to be used for other types of vehicles. It's going to feature double steel belts and full nylon plies that combine for superior function and a long tire life.

It's got the computer-generated tread design and premium rubber-compound materials, so it's going to offer maximum traction in wet or dry conditions as well as a smoother ride and excellent stability at highway speeds. The ST tire meets Department of Transportation specifications. This is designed to fit 16 inch by 6 inch, 16 inch by 6 and a 1/2 inch, 16 inch by 7 inch, and 16 inch by 7 and a 1/2 inch rims. It's going to give us a section width from outer edge to outer edge of 9.37 inches. When fully inflated, it's going to give us an outer diameter from edge to edge of 31.61 inches. Again, it offers us a load range of E, with a 10 ply rating.

It's going to give us a maximum load of 3,640 pounds at 95 psi and dual tire application is 3,200 pounds at 95 psi. It's got all the indicators listed here on the outer wall of the tire. You can always use those as a quick reference guide if you ever need any of that information. That's going to do it for today's review for part number AM10295. This is the Kenda Karrier radial trailer tire. .

Still looking great. Went to Alaska and back as spair tires. Just getting ready to put them on the trailer. I have purchased the other two so now the test begins. I ran the last pair 30+ thousand miles and still look good but time to change. Have great load capacity for my big 5th wheel. Thanks 243521

I really wanted a D load rated 205/75-14 tire for my travel trailer. But, as with many Chinese imports, the quality just isn't there. Two had catastrophic failures. One of the survivors has part of the steel belt protruding from the casing where the tread meets the sidewall. I'm thinking I will switch to Goodyear Endurance which are American made and are also available from etrailer. 640968

This tire will be used as a replacement on my boat trailer. I'd been waiting for over 3 weeks to receive this make tire from a dealer in the Cleveland Ohio area. I canceled the order after speaking with Natalie, who, by the way is a wonderful customer service representative. Then, I received the tire 2 days later! Great company and excellent service!! When I need tires again I'll call. Thanks Natalie 656281

So happy to get these tires for my boat trailer. The radial tires will give better service than the bias tires. They replaced 4.80 X 12 Bias tires. The radials also handle more pounds per tire than the bias. Also, I have at least 8 sets of wheels so I went to the local nationwide department store and their auto department took off the old tires and mounted the new tires for $5.00 each. 616869

I just received the tires today and haven't had them mounted yet so all I can is they look great. Summer before last, we took our pop up camper out West through 18 states in about 60 days. All of our camping up that point had been around Florida where we live, so no long road trips. On our out West trip we had 4 blowouts on our little pop up camper and since we were on the road, we would pick up tire/wheel assemblies from Wal-Mart or Harbor Freight. Did not really know what else to do. Experience has taught us better and that's why I ordered these load range E, 65 mph, 10 ply rating tires. The proof is in the pudding as they say, so in the fall, we will find out how good these tires are and I will write a full review then. 616909

These tires are NICE tires! Taller than I expected, which is ok , because I put these tires on my little camper and gave it more ground clearance. I bought these tires because we pull our camper long distances and the bias tires were blowing out quite a bit. I haven't taken out my camper yet for a trial run but hoping these will give me what I need when we travel. 658958

Review from a similar Kenda Karrier Radial in Tires and Wheels

I needed four tires for a travel trailer and two plus new springs for a boat trailer. Customer service was very helpful with wisdom about tires and searching for some hardware we couldn't exactly match but found some good enough. Gave me her number at end of first call in case I needed any more help and I did. A few hours after ordering I got email reporting all shipped. All arrived on predicted time. Over the years I have noticed that tire quality is often approximately reflected in visible details like the fit of the mold segments, amount of flash, the surface finish, sharpness of details. These are some of the prettiest tires I've ever seen that weren't top of the line Michelins, Pirellis or Bridgestones. I gave them a roll and a sharp eye and saw no wavers vertical or horizontal. Of course the ultimate issue is price. I don't know how you do it. No store in Jacksonville can come close. Even Wal-mart. 595740

Just what I was after to increase my load rating and speed. Shipped very fast received 4 days before expected. 540775

Comments

Please keep in mind that running a tire with a higher load rating will not necessarily increase the load bearing capacity of your trailer. You will still be limited by the capacity of the lowest rated component.

Kenda has been around since 1962, so I'm guessing these tires will be good. They certainly look good, and needed very little weight for balance, which is a sign of quality. I also wanted Radials, as here in Texas we have lots of straight, high speed highways. If there are any problems, I'll do a follow-up. 614301

Ordered tires for trailer. Rec'd the freshest I've ever seen. Manufacture date was 30 week of 2017. Installed 7/19/17. Does that even add up???? 8 Ply trailer tires hopefully will minimize the tire explosions in the future. 409689

Just returned from 2nd long road with about 3400 miles each. Also logged a few 300 mile trips. So far, holding up well. Run 50 psi. Tires are D rated. This is my 2nd set of 4(double axle). 1st set didn't quite go as far. Had sidewall failure on two of the four. Maybe bad batch. Would recommend due to steel belts and D rating. Original equip. was C rated and fiber glass belted. 647694

Comments

Trailer tires, unlike those used on passenger vehicles, should be kept at the maximum pressure indicated on the tire sidewall, which is 70 psi in this case. Failure to keep the tires fully inflated can lead to excessive heat build-up, which is the number one cause of premature tire failure.

I recieved the trailer tires really fast. They have a good tread design and when mounted look great. I installed them on a very small travel trailer which came out with a load range C. These have a load range D which should be an improvement due to a little more pressure and carring capacity. I am very pleased with the delivery time and looks of the tires. 119820

Only just put tires on, so can't yet report on them. They look/feel well made. etrailer made good on their 110% price guarantee when I proved a lower price elsewhere. When it appeared there was going to be a delay in shipping they called and offered an alternative tire which I chose to decline and waited for these. They arrived earlier than anticipated however. Easy transaction, hope the tires are as good as other reviews. A word of warning; the shop took 8 hours yesterday to do a laser alignment on my Correct Track equipped 5th wheel and to mount these 4 tires. Adding insult to injury, they billed a half hour apiece to mount them, or $270! I almost blew a gasket after they had told me that it would only be a couple of hours and that I'd be fine waiting. The sign on the wall for $29 (each) mounting was if you bought their tires (very fine print). Needless to say I didn't let them get away with that. I at least give them credit for honoring the $29 sign on the wall after arguing it. Next time I'll be getting them mounted elsewhere.... 484278

Really nice tires at a good price. Arrived in a few days. They installed great on my pop-up camper that had bias tires. Well worth the extra money to get radial tires. I'm very pleased with the fast service and great quality. Had them put on the rims by my local tire store. I just couldn't break the bead to get the old tires off the rim. 430593

Review from a similar Kenda Karrier Radial in Tires and Wheels

After blowing two tires the same day and destroying two rims On our enclosed cargo trailer, I went searching for a quality tire with good reviews. My first stop as always was etrailer where I selected a tire with a D Load rating to replace my C's, this was based off the manufacture specs and reviews. I then looked elsewhere for validation of the tire quality and price like any good consumer. I found a cheaper price and shot a note to etrailer with the website that had the lesser price and within 4-hours I received a note from Nikki telling me they will honor the price and provided instructions To send her my etrailer order number once I placed it. Well in a matter of minutes I placed the order and Nikki credited my card for the price difference. In addition I always get a notification from George when my product ships and a follow up once it is delivered to make sure everything was okay So you ask why I shop at Etrailer? How about best price, excellent web site with good product data, free shipping and fantastic customer service to name a few !! 562980

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation with Capacity Over 4,425 lbs
  • For a tandem axle trailer that weighs 17,700 lbs you'd need an individual tire capacity of 4,425 lbs. The closest tire we have to that in your size of 235/85R16 is going to be the Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # TTWPRG235R16 which has a capacity of 4,400 lbs which is close but you'd be 100 lbs under capacity with these. Instead you would want to use the entire weight of the trailer divided by the amount of tires the trailer has to determine what each tire capacity you would need. Since you referenced a ST235/85R16 tire I would instead recommend the Taskmaster Tire part # TTWPRG235R16. This has the needed capacity as it has a 4,080 lb capacity at 110 psi and then also...

  • Trailer Tire Pressure Recommendation for Hot Weather
  • The max psi for a trailer tire should be used at all times and should be inflated to when the tire is "cold" or first thing before any towing. Any pressure fluctuations from heat that builds up on the highway would be fine as long as you have the max pressure inflated in ambient temps before towing. Heat is the biggest cause of trailer tire failures though so the other things to keep an eye on is be sure not to exceed the speed rating and weight rating of the tire and you'll be good.

  • How to Pick Out 16 inch Trailer Tires for a Toy Hauler
  • The best way to pick out replacement tires for your trailer would be to determine what you current size is by checking out the trailer tire sidewall and then going with the highest Load Range tire we offer in that size. Most likely you have a 235/85R16 and the part # AM10501 would be your best option. This is a radial tire with a Load Range of F. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree...

  • Valve Stems for Trailer Tires and Wheels Rated for 110 PSI on a 5th Wheel Trailer
  • Usually valve stems that are rated for 110 psi will be metal such as # AM20906. The valve stems usually match the tire capacity. The safe bet would be to use new valve stems so you can be sure. It is not a big expense and it will give you piece of mind.

  • Which Tires for 8500 lb 5th Wheel to Replace Existing ST245/75R-16
  • You will want to choose tires whose individual load rating is greater than 1/4 of the fully loaded and ready to tow trailer weight. For a dual axle 8500 lb trailer (assuming fully loaded weight), you would want each tire rated greater than 2125 lbs. Since the typical capacity of 4 16 inch tires would be so much greater than the weight of your fifth wheel, the load rating is not really important. Any of the tires we offer for 16 inch wheels should have plenty of capacity for your needs,...

  • Best Trailer Tire Recommendation for Size ST235/85R16
  • The best tire for a trailer is going to be based on a few things. You will want to go with a tire that has a weight capacity that is higher than what your trailer would call for when loaded, and has a speed rating that is higher than the speeds you plan to travel. Going with the highest rated tire in the size you need is a great way to ensure that you don't ever have to worry about overloading your tires. In the tire size you mentioned of ST235/85R16 I would highly recommend the #...

  • Availability of 235/85-16 Trailer Tire With High Speed Rating
  • We offer two compatible tires that have a higher speed rating. Provider offers a ST235/80R-16, load range E, tire, part # TTWTRTM2358016E. The tire has a 9.25 inch tread width and a 30.79 diameter. The tire carries an M speed rating, good for up to 81 mph. Also available is their ST235/85R-16, load range G, part # TTWPRG235R16. The tire has the same tread width at 9.25 inches, but would be larger in diameter by about 1 inch which would place the tire about 1/2 inch closer to the underside...

  • Weight Capacity of 5th Wheel Trailer Tires Required Accounting for King Pin Weight in GVWR
  • Technically you do remove the tongue weight of the trailer from the tire load capacity for the GVWR. The tires only need to be rated for the weight that is actually on the tire, so the axles can even be rated slightly lower. This however is not normally the case. In most instances the axles and especially the tires are rated higher than the required capacity for the GVWR. For 15 inch tires the load rating of E is the highest rating we carry. • Can an ST235/80/16 Load Range F Trailer Tire be Safely Used on a 15k 5th Wheel Trailer
  • There seems to be a mix up somewhere. Trailer tire # AM10501 that you have referenced is size 235/85-16, not 235/80. We have 2 tires in size 235/85-16. First, # AM10501, is a load range F and is rated for 3,960 pounds at 95 psi. Then we have # AM10295, load range E, rated for 3,640 pounds at 95 psi. So the load range F tire is rated higher. For tire size 235/80-16 we have 1 tire, # AM10248, rated for 3,197 pounds at 90 psi. As far as if any of the above tires can be used on a 14,800...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation in ST235/80R16 Load Range E
  • A lot people use the Goodyear tires. We also hear a lot of problems with them but that usually is a result of under inflation which is a problem for any trailer tire. Carlisle makes a good tire too. And Taskmaster, # TTWTRTM2358016E, which we do carry is a solid performer as well. There are some trailer manufacturers that use Taskmaster as their OEM tires. Taskmaster tire # TTWTRTM2358016E is a 235/80-16 load range E tire rated for 3,520 pounds at 80 psi. It also has an M speed rating...

  • Recommended Taskmaster G-Rated Special Trailer Tire in Size ST235/85-16
  • I am sorry about your 'white-knuckle' tire blowout on the interstate. I can help you select new tires that can help avoid a repeat of this awful experience. Your tire size ST235/80-16 has an overall diameter of just under 31-inches. The slightly larger size ST235/85-16 will fit on your same rims but in this size you have the options of a Load Range F tire, which offers nearly 500-lbs more capacity (more safety margin) per tire than the E-rated size ST235/80-16, and even a G-rated tire...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for a 15k Trailer with 16 inch Trailer Rims
  • I did some research on the Provider ST Tire F835 that you have, and it looks like the tire has a 4,080 lb capacity when inflated to 110 psi. Based on that you would have a total of 16,320 lbs of tire capacity since you have 4 tires on your setup. That should be enough capacity for you since you have a 15k GVW. The only option we have that would be pretty close to that would be the Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10501. This has a 3,960 lb capacity when inflated to 95 psi...

The article that is titled Trailer Tire Frequently Asked Questions explains the difference between trailer tires and those used on a vehicle. Normally, we recommend a good radial tire unless it is used for off-road applications...

I have linked a video review of this tire for you. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire sidewall. Trailer tires have a thicker sidewall compared to passenger vehicle tires so if under inflated the thicker sidewall will generate excessive heat and lead to tire failure. I have included a link to...
