Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Kenda Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - AM10251 Review

Today we will be reviewing part number AM10251. This is the Kenda Carrier radial trailer tire with a load range of C. Tire size is ST225-75R15. The special trailer tire design provides strength of a bias tire as well as the durability and stability of a radial tire. This is created specifically for trailers and is not intended to be used on other vehicles. Its going to feature double steel belts and full nylon plys that combine for superior function along tire life. It also features computer generated tread design and premium rubber compound materials.

So its going to provide maximum traction in wet or dry conditions as well as a nice smooth ride and excellent stability at highway speeds. The ST tire meets Department of Transportation specifications. The section width from outer wall to outer wall is going to measure 8.9 inches. This tire is designed to fit 15 by 6 inch, 15 inch by 6.5 inch and 15 inch by 7 inch rims. Again the tire size is ST225-75R15. Now when this is fully inflated, its going to give us an outer diameter from edge to edge of 28.4 inches. When it comes to capacity, its going to offer a load range of C with a 6-ply rating.

Maximum load is going to be 2,150 pounds at 50 PSI. This also features all the indicators listed on the outer wall of the tire that you can use a quick reference guide if you ever need that information. Thats going to complete todays review of part number AM10251. This is the Kenda Carrier radial trailer tire. .

Its a trailer tire, what's to say? Time and milage will tell, then I'll review as to durability and endurance. I received it in only 3 days which is amazing, and what arrived was just what was ordered; as always with etrailer. Great service, good products, fair prices. 553660

The online information on how to determine bolt pattern and measure a wheel was very useful to help me determine what size tire to order, since I was planning to use some rims I already owned. Once ordered, the 2 trailer tires arrived quickly, but a day apart (?). I had them mounted on my rims, balanced, and then swapped them out with the old wheels. No installation problems, and the trailer pulls nicely as always. Now we shall see how the tires wear over time. 165404

I recieved my tires and wheels yesterday. I was in need of these quickly since I was leaving on a trip the same week. Dana M. at etrailer hooked me up with the right tires and wheels for my trailer and the shipping was as promised. Thank you guys for a great transaction. I would definitely buy again. 162963

Review from a similar Kenda Karrier Radial in Tires and Wheels

I really wanted a D load rated 205/75-14 tire for my travel trailer. But, as with many Chinese imports, the quality just isn't there. Two had catastrophic failures. One of the survivors has part of the steel belt protruding from the casing where the tread meets the sidewall. I'm thinking I will switch to Goodyear Endurance which are American made and are also available from etrailer. 640968

Kenda has been around since 1962, so I'm guessing these tires will be good. They certainly look good, and needed very little weight for balance, which is a sign of quality. I also wanted Radials, as here in Texas we have lots of straight, high speed highways. If there are any problems, I'll do a follow-up. 614301

Just what I was after to increase my load rating and speed. Shipped very fast received 4 days before expected. 540775

Comments

Please keep in mind that running a tire with a higher load rating will not necessarily increase the load bearing capacity of your trailer. You will still be limited by the capacity of the lowest rated component.

Review from a similar Kenda Karrier Radial in Tires and Wheels

I needed four tires for a travel trailer and two plus new springs for a boat trailer. Customer service was very helpful with wisdom about tires and searching for some hardware we couldn't exactly match but found some good enough. Gave me her number at end of first call in case I needed any more help and I did. A few hours after ordering I got email reporting all shipped. All arrived on predicted time. Over the years I have noticed that tire quality is often approximately reflected in visible details like the fit of the mold segments, amount of flash, the surface finish, sharpness of details. These are some of the prettiest tires I've ever seen that weren't top of the line Michelins, Pirellis or Bridgestones. I gave them a roll and a sharp eye and saw no wavers vertical or horizontal. Of course the ultimate issue is price. I don't know how you do it. No store in Jacksonville can come close. Even Wal-mart. 595740

Ordered tires for trailer. Rec'd the freshest I've ever seen. Manufacture date was 30 week of 2017. Installed 7/19/17. Does that even add up???? 8 Ply trailer tires hopefully will minimize the tire explosions in the future. 409689

I recieved the trailer tires really fast. They have a good tread design and when mounted look great. I installed them on a very small travel trailer which came out with a load range C. These have a load range D which should be an improvement due to a little more pressure and carring capacity. I am very pleased with the delivery time and looks of the tires. 119820

Thank you so much! Yes, my four tires arrived in perfect condition in 3 out of 3-5 days, which was greatly appreciated as I had to be out of town the next day, and my regular UPS guy, who has common sense and pride in his work, hid them between my camper and garage door as per my note that I hadn't put out yet. Only just put tires on, so can't yet report on them. They look/feel well made. etrailer made good on their 110% price guarantee when I proved a lower price elsewhere. When it appeared there was going to be a delay in shipping they called and offered an alternative tire which I chose to decline and waited for these. They arrived earlier than anticipated however. Easy transaction, hope the tires are as good as other reviews. A word of warning; the shop took 8 hours yesterday to do a laser alignment on my Correct Track equipped 5th wheel and to mount these 4 tires. Adding insult to injury, they billed a half hour apiece to mount them, or $270! I almost blew a gasket after they had told me that it would only be a couple of hours and that I'd be fine waiting. The sign on the wall for $29 (each) mounting was if you bought their tires (very fine print). Needless to say I didn't let them get away with that. I at least give them credit for honoring the $29 sign on the wall after arguing it. Next time I'll be getting them mounted elsewhere.... 484278

This is the exact same O.E. tire on my camper. They are a great tire. This tire was only purchased to have as a spare. I have purchased tires in the past that were made in China ( not this brand) and had constant blowouts. These are better made ( still made in China) and so far I’ve had good luck with them. Please see my review of the rim I purchased for this tire. 565442

Review from a similar Kenda Karrier Radial in Tires and Wheels

After blowing two tires the same day and destroying two rims On our enclosed cargo trailer, I went searching for a quality tire with good reviews. My first stop as always was etrailer where I selected a tire with a D Load rating to replace my C's, this was based off the manufacture specs and reviews. I then looked elsewhere for validation of the tire quality and price like any good consumer. I found a cheaper price and shot a note to etrailer with the website that had the lesser price and within 4-hours I received a note from Nikki telling me they will honor the price and provided instructions To send her my etrailer order number once I placed it. Well in a matter of minutes I placed the order and Nikki credited my card for the price difference. In addition I always get a notification from George when my product ships and a follow up once it is delivered to make sure everything was okay So you ask why I shop at Etrailer? How about best price, excellent web site with good product data, free shipping and fantastic customer service to name a few !! 562980

Really nice tires at a good price. Arrived in a few days. They installed great on my pop-up camper that had bias tires. Well worth the extra money to get radial tires. I needed new tries for my 5th wheel trailer that provided a heavier load limit more durable tire than the stock tires that came on the trailer. I selected the Karrier ST 235/85R16 as it met the list of item I was looking for in a tire. Etrailer was great to deal with. Their web site was user friendly and their service was a pleasurable experience. Etrailer made shipment of the tires the same day I placed the order, and I received them in 5 days. I will look at etrailer for future purchases of my trailer needs! 49310

New tires arrived VERY quickly. Amazingly fast delivery .......5 tires arrived in individual boxes, very impressive delivery system!! Tires appear to be very heavy duty re sidewalls, I did read the reviews before ordering and am hoping for good results. Not exactly happy that the build dates on the tires are over one year old..........and yes I did read the rebuttle to someone elses pointing out the one year old thing. Tires made in China. Hoping for the best based upon many positive reviews. 567758

Tires arrived yesterday. They are from China and they are over a year old looking at the date code 3217 not very happy . Nothing on the tires showing that they are made by Kenda that was advertise. 556108

Comments

Its not unheard of for tires to arrive at our location that were manufactured a year or so before we receive them. The tires are manufactured overseas. After they are manufactured, they sit in a warehouse for a period of time until theyre packed in a shipping container and ultimately loaded on a container ship and shipped to the US. The trip here and entry through US Customs can sometimes take a month or more. The tires then sit in a warehouse in the US until we order and receive them. Tires that are stored in a warehouse under somewhat controlled conditions dont age or dry rot like tires that are exposed to the elements and UV radiation do. The fact that your tires were a bit older than a year when you received them will not have any effect on their lifespan or durability. They should be good for up to 6-7 years, assuming they are not stored in direct sunlight, not overloaded, kept properly inflated and their speed rating isnt being exceeded. The tire you purchased is a Karrier Load Star, which is the brand name of a tire manufactured by Kenda.

Good Tire from a great company. This is the only Load Range D tire I could find in a 14" rim size but this tire has been an excellent purchase. I could not be happier with my purchase and my tire dealer was happy to mount them because they knew that they did not sell a load range D tire in a 14". 431268

Great tire. After another year of use the tires still look like new. The load range D tires carry the weight better and gives me great peace of mind.

This is a great trailer tire! I purchased these for my R-Pod 182G (I'm guessing around 3500lbs fully loaded) for a cross-country road trip. I wanted a more robust tire so I could travel at 70 mph without constantly worrying if the tires would blow-out. 3800 miles in two weeks and the tires handled perfectly and still look new. I filled them with nitrogen because I was traversing a wide range of elevations (7200'-500') and I didn't want to worry about pressure fluctuations. They were filled to 65psi when the tires were a little warm so they ended up being about 60psi when cold, but they never got above 70psi when hot. This is a great tire if you have a trailer that usually uses a Load Range "C", 6 ply tire. E-trailer made my order very painless, offering free shipping, which I had to forgo and pay $7.95 for 3-5 day shipping, because I needed them that week. The tires arrived in great shape in 3 days. 270276

Review from a similar Kenda Karrier Radial in Tires and Wheels

I purchased two of these tires for my boat trailer 5 years ago. They had maybe 10-12k miles on them. Last fall I had one of the tires go bad - the tire cords failed causing uneven wear. It didn't blow out but I was perhaps lucky. Purchased a replacement - same tire. Last month I had a similar cord failure with the other old tire. After that problem was going to purchase 2 new name brand tires but couldn't find any D load rating tires in the 175/80R13 tires. Decided to just buy another Karrier tire. When my mechanic changed out the second tire he said the inside of this one was far worse than the first failure. I was running the tires with 55 psi of air with a max listed pressure of 65 psi. Maybe that was a factor so now running the tires at 60 psi and plan on changing them after 3 years. Not real comfortable with these tires but hopefully I can get 3 years out of them without a failure. 280969

  • Replacing 235/75R15 Tires on a Forest River r-pod
  • The ST235/75R15 tires you referenced are not a standard sized trailer tire, hence the difficulty in finding them. Your best bet to find tires now and in the future would be to replace those with 225/75R15 tires, which will be extremely close in overall dimensions, as I'll outline for you below. 235/75R15 tires are 9.3 inches wide with a height of 28.8 inches. 225/75R15 tires are 8.9 inches wide with a height of 28.3 inches. • What Load Range Tire is Needed for a 10,000 lb Trailer
  • Load range capacity varies based on the tire size and brand, so without knowing either, it's hard to say. So, in this case, the load range C tire has a greater capacity than the load range D tire. It's best to check the weight capacity of an individual tire to make sure the load range will be sufficient. For your R-Pod I recommend the Adco Ultra Tyre Gard RV Wheel Covers in White # 290-3953, Black # 290-3973, or Diamond Plate # 290-3753. These covers feature overlapping seams, double-needle stitching,...

  • Upgrade From 225/75R15 Load Range C Tire to Load Range D Tire on a Horse Trailer
  • I'm assuming that your horse trailer is a tandem axle trailer since most are and if that is the case, then your load range C tires are more than capable of handling your trailer and your horses. The ST225/75R15 load range C tire that we carry, Kenda Karrier Tire part # AM10251, is rated for 2,150 lbs at 50 psi. Four of these tires would give you a total capacity of 8,600 lbs. Your gross trailer weight is likely somewhere between 5,200 lbs and 7,200 lbs depending on whether you meant...

  • What is the Recommended Tire Spacing on Tandem Axles?
  • There are no industry standards for minimum spacing between the forward and aft tires, and the 3-1/2 inches of space you referred to will be plenty. Should you need the larger weight capacity the larger tires offer, you will be fine upgrading from 205/75R15 to 225/75R15. Something else to consider is the clearance between the inside wall of the tire and the trailer frame because the larger tires will be nearly an inch wider, so be sure you have at least three or four inches of clearance...

  • Trailer Tires to Replace P235/70-15 Car Tires on a Horse Trailer with Dually Wheels
  • You definitely need to replace the tires with trailer tires. Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall than car tires to handle more vertical load. The steel wheels are pretty much the same as the black steel wheels such as # AM20514 so they are likely going to be fine. The smallest dually wheels we have are 16 inch, # TTW660865SDX1C, which uses an 8 on 6-1/2 bolt pattern. On the wheels you have you could likely use a 225/75-15 size which would only be 0.394 inches more narrow...

  • Speed Rating for Karrier 225/75-15 Tires # AM10251 and # AM10256
  • For the tires on our site unless otherwise noted in the specs section on the product page the tires are rated for 65 miles per hour. This is the case with # AM10251 and # AM10256. If you need a 225/75-15 tire with a higher speed rating I recommend # TTWTRTM2257515D. It has an M speed rating which is 81 miles per hour. I have linked a video review of this tire for you.

  • Tire Recommendation for the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel # AM20537
  • We do not offer the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel # AM20537 with a Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10251 pre-mounted on it. The two are compatible with each other so your best option would be to order them separately and then have them mounted at a shop local to you. I attached review videos for both products for you to check out as well.

  • Recommendation for ST225/75D15 Trailer Tires for Long Distance Trip
  • Almost no tires are made in the US anymore. Tires made overseas still have to meet DOT regulations for use in the US though. In size ST225/75-15 I recommend radial tires since you are traveling long distance. Radial tires track better and run cooler than bias ply tires. For a load range C, rated for 2,150 pounds at 50 psi, use # AM10251. For a load range D, rated for 2,540 pounds at 65 psi use # TTWTRTM2257515D. And for a load range E, rated for 2,830 pounds at 80 psi use # AM10303.

  • What Wheel Sizes Are a Fit for a 225/75-15 Trailer Tire
  • Any given trailer tire fits on a range of wheel widths. A 225/75-15 tire will fit on 6, 6-1/2, and 7 inch wide wheels but not a 5-1/2 inch wide wheel. I have included a link to the 15 x 6 inch wheels that we carry that will accept tire size 225/75-15. I have also included links to a couple of info-articles on tire sizes and trailer tires for you.

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation to Replace a P215/75R15
  • It's a smart idea to remove the P215 tires from your trailer since they weren't meant for use on a trailer. The P actually designates that it is for a passenger vehicle. Either size you are interested in would work well. I like going with the largest tire available that will fit since you will get more capacity, more ground clearance, and a slightly smoother ride quality. The part # AM10251 would work well for you. I attached a review video for you to check out as well. Both Kenda...

  • What is the Difference Between a Bias Ply Tire and a Radial Tire and Can I Tell Date of Manufacture
  • The D14 will not fit your wheel if you currently have an R15 tire. That means your wheel is a 15 inch wheel and a D14 or R14 tire will fit a 14 inch wheel. The difference between a bias ply and a radial tire is the way the rubber is layered. A bias ply is layered around the tire, and a radial tire is layered from sidewall to sidewall with steel belting. A radial tire will be more stable and will yield better ride quality. Currently we do not have a 215/75-15 size tire. We do have...

  • Wheel and Tire Recommendations for a Livestock Trailer with 5 Lug Wheels and 7.00x15LT Tires
  • I have a solution for you, but the 7.00x 15 LT tire size you have is a light truck tire size. LT tires should not be used on trailers although some do without issue. Trailer tires are designed with a thicker sidewall that can accommodate higher air pressures and the weight of the trailer load. Trailer tires should also be inflated to their maximum pressure that is stamped on the sidewall. The trailer tires that we carry are not intended to be used at speeds over 65 miles per hour, unless...

  • What is the Difference Between Load Range C and Load Range D Tires
  • The difference between load ranges varies based on the tire size and brand. When comparing two tires of the same size and brand, a load range D tire will always have a greater weight capacity and psi rating than a load range C. However, when comparing two dissimilar tires, such as a size 145/80-12 tire and a size 185/80-13 tire, the load ranges will not correlate with one another. For example, a load range D tire in size 145/80-12 has an average capacity of 1,220 lbs, while a load range...

  • Recommended Tires for a 5x10 Trailer with 3,500 Lb Axle
  • The number of plies a tire has no longer has a direct correlation to the weight capacity of a tire as manufacturers have begun to use stronger material which means fewer plies and a higher weight capacity. The figure that is now used instead of plies is load range. The load range of all tires will need to exceed the gross trailer weight (GTW) of the trailer. I recommend the Karrier Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10251 if you have ST225/75-15 tires or part # AM10244 if you have ST205/75-15...

  • Will Trailer Tire With Higher load Rating Last Longer
  • Going to a tire with a higher rated load range will mean you will need a higher psi rating. The problem with going to a higher rated tire is that it may result in a stiffer ride. For example, a Load Range E tire like part # TR225LRE is rated for a maximum load of 2,830 lbs at 80 psi. A load Range C like part # AM10251 is rated at 2,150 lbs at 50 psi and a Load Range D tire like part # C22515D is rated at 2,540 lbs at 65 psi. I have attached a link to a helpful article about tires...

  • Replacing 235/75R15 Tires on a Forest River R-Pod
  • Yes, the answer remains the same for replacing 235/75R15 tires on your Forest River R-Pod, which will be to go with 225/75R15 tires that are 8.9" wide and 28.3" in diameter, which is a 1/2" less in diameter than the 235/75R15 tires. As I previously mentioned you do have quite a few options depending on the load range you need, which does need to meet or exceed your trailer's GVWR. For a 225/75R15 load range C tire with a maximum load capacity of 2,150 lbs at 50 psi there is the Karrier...
