Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

After blowing two tires the same day and destroying two rims On our enclosed cargo trailer, I went searching for a quality tire with good reviews. My first stop as always was etrailer where I selected a tire with a D Load rating to replace my C's, this was based off the manufacture specs and reviews. I then looked elsewhere for validation of the tire quality and price like any good consumer. I found a cheaper price and shot a note to etrailer with the website that had the lesser price and within 4-hours I received a note from Nikki telling me they will honor the price and provided instructions To send her my etrailer order number once I placed it. Well in a matter of minutes I placed the order and Nikki credited my card for the price difference. In addition I always get a notification from George when my product ships and a follow up once it is delivered to make sure everything was okay So you ask why I shop at Etrailer? How about best price, excellent web site with good product data, free shipping and fantastic customer service to name a few !! 562980

Thank you so much! Yes, my four tires arrived in perfect condition in 3 out of 3-5 days, which was greatly appreciated as I had to be out of town the next day, and my regular UPS guy, who has common sense and pride in his work, hid them between my camper and garage door as per my note that I hadn't put out yet. OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE ALL AROUND---PERFECT!!!!!!!! Thank you Carol and eTrailer! I will be back. 575932

Tires and wheels came FAST! I was surprised! Got these mounted/balanced this weekend and installed them myself yesterday, as I had to go over all the bearings, repack with fresh grease, check the hubs, etc. They look sharp! The real test will be how they do on the road going down to Mexico later this month. They seem like a good solid load range D tire, but will report back after I get some miles on them and see how they hold up. Purchased the galvanized wheels from etrailer as well. The tire shop that mounted/balanced cautioned me on one of the rims about a weld that was a bit iffy to them -- they checked them all as they were mounting. It didn't seem too bad to me, but I'm not a professional. 305500

Very economical choice to step up to a load range D tire. I had no luck locally finding a decent tire under $100ea so on a whim I checked etrailer. I bought (7) with free shipping and the tire quality looks good. I knocked off one star because dealing with the staples in the shipping boxes is a PITA and must be removed to recycle. 614738

Update: Sadly Ive had two tirerim failures. One tire developed numerous sidewall blisters and blew out on the highway. Tire was fully inflated that morning. The second tire developed a crack in the steel rim causing the tire to loose air. Fortunately my TMPS system warned me before the tire was damaged.

Thanks for your feedback Kurk. I have checked with our resident tire and wheel expert and he has informed me that side wall blistering and wheel cracking typically result from impact (usually a curb, sever pothole etc). Happy to hear that your TMPS system indicated a problem for you before it became a more severe issue.

This tire will be used as a replacement on my boat trailer. I'd been waiting for over 3 weeks to receive this make tire from a dealer in the Cleveland Ohio area. I canceled the order after speaking with Natalie, who, by the way is a wonderful customer service representative. Then, I received the tire 2 days later! Great company and excellent service!! When I need tires again I'll call. Thanks Natalie 656281

These tires are NICE tires! Taller than I expected, which is ok , because I put these tires on my little camper and gave it more ground clearance. I bought these tires because we pull our camper long distances and the bias tires were blowing out quite a bit. I haven't taken out my camper yet for a trial run but hoping these will give me what I need when we travel. 658958

Great deal on a really good set of tires. I chanced my stock China Bomb tires on my travel trailer for 3+ years. I had to order some reliable rubber for my upcoming 5000+ mile trip. etrailer.com had a great price, fast shipping, and most importantly, individually boxed. I’ve ordered tires from other internet shops and had them arrived banded together for who knows how long. 604701

Review from a similar Kenda Karrier Radial in Tires and Wheels

Know the load-range requirements of your trailer. On my trailer, the factory label calls for "Load-Range C" tires. This is not correct, and I can't believe the manufacturer even suggested them. According to the trailer specs, my trailer has a maximum weight of 7,500 lbs. ST205/75R14 trailer tires in load-range C are only rated for a dual-axle load of 1,570 pounds. That is a total of 6,280 pounds with 4 tires. However, in load-range D, the maximum dual-axle capacity is 1,930 pounds. That is a total of 7,720 pounds, or a better match to the rated capacity of the axle and trailer. Therefore, I am very glad that I switched to these Kenda tires, and I am optimistic that I will get much better service life from them than what I had before. 666707

I really wanted a D load rated 205/75-14 tire for my travel trailer. But, as with many Chinese imports, the quality just isn't there. Two had catastrophic failures. One of the survivors has part of the steel belt protruding from the casing where the tread meets the sidewall. I'm thinking I will switch to Goodyear Endurance which are American made and are also available from etrailer. 640968

Tires arrived in good condition in three days, individually boxed. Had them mounted today on my Lance travel trailer and they look great, much better than the Tow-Max tires they are replacing. Only minor surprise was that the DOT date code on the tires indicates the tires were manufactured around mid 2017. Nevertheless, they look great and I am confident my BAD experiences (three) with "Blow-Max" brand tires are over. Concerning etrailer, this is one of many purchases I've made over the past 10 years and I have always been impressed with the EXCELLENT customer service, product information and instructive videos, communications, pricing, and product selection. IMHO etrailer is one of the best retailers on the web and I highly recommend them to all. 653723

  • Best Tire Options for Trailer Tire Size 205/75/15
  • We do have options for your new 205/75-15 tires. I will give you recommendations for the load range C and D for this size tire. The most economical tire for the C Load Range is the Loadstar Bias Trailer Tire # AM1ST92, The next option would be the Taskmaster Bias Trailer Tire # TTWSF20515C, and your best option would be the Provider Radial Trailer Tire # TTWTRTM2057515C. These tires in the Load Range C have an 1,820 lb maximum load capacity at 50 psi. The difference between bias tires...

  • Is There a Load Range Chart for Trailer Tires
  • The reason that you cannot find a list of all load ranges and the weight capacity for each in regards to trailer tires is because it will be different for each size. For example, a 205/75-15 tire like part # AM10245 which has a load range D rating is rated for up to 2,150 lbs whereas a 225/75-15 tire like part # AM10256 which also has a load range D rating is rated for up to 2,540 lbs. • Identifying Radial vs Bias Tires
  • The easiest way to tell is by looking at the sidewall of the tire. A lot of times they state bias or radial construction. If not then you can usually tell by the size. If there's a "D" or "B" before the rim diameter, such as 205/75D15 part # AM1ST92, then it's a bias tire. If there's an "R", like 205/75R15 part # AM10245, then it's radial. If the tire is a radial it will always have an "R". If it doesn't have an "R" it may have a "D", "B", or even just a dash in which case it's a...

This is a load range C tire rated for 1,820 pounds at 50 psi. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire sidewall. This is because trailer tires are...

  • High Capacity Trailer Tire Recommendation for a 15 inch Diameter 5 inch Wide Trailer Rim
  • The recommended wheel width for 225/75-15 trailer tires is 6 inches to 7 inches. For a 5 inch wide rim you would need to go with the 205/75-15 like you mentioned. For a Load Range D tire in this size you would want the part # AM10245. The capacity for this tire is 2,150 lbs at 65 psi. I attached a review video for this tire as well.

  • Best Trailer Tire Recommendation for Size ST205/75-15
  • The best tire for your trailer in the same size that you have is the part # AM10245. This is the highest capacity tire we offer in that size. It is a Load Range D with 2,150 lbs at 65 psi capacity. Your current tire is a bias-ply. I can tell by the letter D in the size. The # AM10245 is a radial which will be a better overall tire. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run...

  • Recommended Replacement ST205/75R15 Trailer Tires
  • We offer two load ranges in the ST205/75R15 radial tire size you referenced. Both are Kenda Karrier tires produced in China to the same specs as tires produced in other factories. All have to meet the same specifications and safety standards regardless of where they are made. Part # AM10245 is a Load range D radial tire and part # AM10244 is a Load rang C. Trailer tires should always be run at their full rated inflation pressure as indicated on the tire sidewall. You might refer to the...

  • Trailer Tires to Replace 7.75-15 or 6.70-15 Tires
  • We have a 7.00-15 LT tire size # AM10414 that will fit if the wheel width is 5 to 6 inches where the tire sits but no 7.75-15 tires. The 7.75 is the section width of the tire and our 7.00-15 has a section width of 7.8 inches and is 29.4 inches tall so it would potentially be a good match. It is rated for 2,403 pounds at 70 psi. Another option is to go with a 205/75-15 tire which will have a section width of about 8 inches and outer diameter of 27.13 inches. A load range B in this size,...

  • Load Range C or D Recommendation for a Travel Trailer
  • If you have a tandem axle travel trailer that weighs 6,000 lbs a Load Range C tire like the part # AM1ST92 would work, but since you said that is the weight when empty you would most likely want to go with the Load Range D just to be safe. For that you would want the part # AM10245 which has a 2,150 lbs at 65 psi capacity which is much more than the C. With 4 of these tires you would have a total of 8,600 lbs of tire capacity. That doesn't mean you can carry that much weight necessarily...

  • Recommended Trailer Tires for 2012 Palomino Puma Fifth Wheel Weighing 8,500 lbs
  • We do recommend using ST, or "special trailer" tires; these are made to have a stronger sidewall than truck tires to accommodate the higher air pressure needed for larger loads. It is important to make always inflate your trailer tires to their maximum psi, which will ensure the best performance and ability to handle the load of your trailer. Since your Palomino Puma weighs 8,500 lbs you are also going to need to make sure your tires are rated for that much weight. The ST205/75R15 tires...

  • 15 Inch Wheel/Tire Combo with 4 Lugs for Older Camper
  • We offer a wheel and tire that are sold separately that might very well work for your application. The 215/75-15 isn't a typical trailer tire size, but a 205/75-15 like # AM1ST92 is definitely in the ballpark, being only about 1/4 inch smaller in diameter than your existing tire. The only 15 inch wheel we offer with a 4 lug bolt pattern is a Dexstar Vintage Trailer Wheel, part # AM20395. If this isn't the wheel you have, please let me know. The # AM1ST92 mentioned above is a load...

  • Trailer Tire to Replace 195/65R15 Tires on a Tandem Axle Trailer
  • The tire size you have now is not a common trailer tire size so it is likely a passenger vehicle tire size. Tire # AM10414 which is a 7.00-15 would be probably the closest option in size. It has a section width of 7.8 inches. But the overall diameter is 29.4 inches. This is more than 4 inches larger than the tires you have now. But as long as there is more than 2 inch of free space above the existing tires, you can use the 7.00-15. This tire is rated for 2,403 pounds at 70 psi and fits...

  • Rim Availability that has 5 on 5-1/2 inch Bolt Pattern
  • The only wheel style we have that has the 5 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern would be one like the part # TTW550555WS1. This is a 15 inch diameter wheel that is 5 inches wide. It may not be the vintage style of rim that you are looking for but it will bolt up to your trailer. For a tire to fit this rim you would want the part # AM10245.

  • Which Tires Are The Right Size For 1970 Single Axle Airstream Trailer
  • You will want to check your Airstream axle out and make sure it has the weight capacity of 4,000 lbs as you mentioned. The capacity should be on a plate or sticker on the axle, or you could use the VIN and call the manufacturer for that information. If you find that the axle has a higher weight capacity than the 3640 lbs your tires provide, you may wish to replace the tires with a load range D tire like the Karrier ST205/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire, part # AM10245. This tire has a maximum...

  • Will an ST205/75-15 Trailer Tire Fit In Place of a 205/70-15 Tire
  • There is only a slight difference between 205/70-15 tires and 205/75-15 tires. A 205/70-15 will be 8 inches wide and 26.3 inches tall. A 205/75-15 will be 8.1 inches wide and 27.3 inches tall. As long as there is more than 1/2 an inch of clearance above the existing tires you can switch to the 205/75-15 tire size. We have a few tires in this size. Tire # AM1ST91 is a load range B rated for 1,480 pounds at 35 psi. Tire # AM1ST92 is a load range C bias ply tire rated for 1,820 pounds...

  • Can Light Truck Tires Be Used in Place of ST205/75R15 Tires on an RV
  • Some RVs can use light truck tires but since you do not have clearance for a taller tire none are going to fit. Tires blow out for several reasons. First, heat is the number 1 enemy of tires. On an ST tire this is a big concern and here's why. ST tires are built with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load. If under inflated it will cause the tire to generate excessive heat because of that thicker sidewall. The other issue is overloading which is easily fixed by removing some...

  • Will an ST205/75-15 Trailer Tire Fit the Same Wheel as a 215/70-15 Tire
  • Its probably hard to find because it isn't a common trailer tire size. A 205/75-15 tire will fit as long as the wheels are 5 to 6-1/2 inches wide (inside where the tire rides). I have included a video on tire # AM10245 as well as some links to help articles on trailer tires for you.
