Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

First of all, you had the tire we were looking for. I looked at least 20 other places (locally and online). I did contact one local national tire store and they said they could order the tire and I would have it the next day. Two weeks later, I am still waiting for their phone call. I did pay extra for the 4 to 6 day delivery and got it in 3 days. It is perfect. Was notified by email that it ordered, shipped and delivered. 911038

We could not be happier with this purchase and transaction. The prices were quite reasonable, for this market & product, and the free-shipping saved us nearly $200. They got here faster than expected at 10 days, each tire & rim assembly were boxed separately and arrived undamaged - see pictures. I will now have to have them balanced, as I see no balancing weights on the rims, which was expected. We also ordered a spare, which was to be delivered late, but it arrived with the shipment too. Very good! 5-star is well deserved. Thank you etrailer.com! 406376

Review from a similar Karrier Radial in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I recieved the trailer tires really fast. They have a good tread design and when mounted look great. I installed them on a very small travel trailer which came out with a load range C. These have a load range D which should be an improvement due to a little more pressure and carring capacity. I am very pleased with the delivery time and looks of the tires. 119820

Review from a similar Karrier Radial in Trailer Tires and Wheels

I am very happy with my new spare tire. I had converted to Radials for better pothole and nail protection. I had the rims and could not find just the tire. It is going on my Whaler trailer. Yes even off season I have begun to spread the word about your prices. WEST MARINE WOULD ONLY SELL ME ONE ON A RIM AND IT WAS $160.00. I HIGHLY recommend your service people for their help. Since you told me about radial tires in a smaller size I may do 3 on my other trailer. Your packing it was great because it was hard to open! That kept the tire in great condition. Review from a similar Karrier Radial in Trailer Tires and Wheels

Just returned from 2nd long road with about 3400 miles each. Also logged a few 300 mile trips. So far, holding up well. Run 50 psi. Tires are D rated. This is my 2nd set of 4(double axle). 1st set didn't quite go as far. Had sidewall failure on two of the four. Maybe bad batch. Would recommend due to steel belts and D rating. Original equip. was C rated and fiber glass belted. 647694

Comments
Trailer tires, unlike those used on passenger vehicles, should be kept at the maximum pressure indicated on the tire sidewall, which is 70 psi in this case. Failure to keep the tires fully inflated can lead to excessive heat build-up, which is the number one cause of premature tire failure.

Ordered tires for trailer. Rec'd the freshest I've ever seen. Manufacture date was 30 week of 2017. Installed 7/19/17. Does that even add up???? 8 Ply trailer tires hopefully will minimize the tire explosions in the future. 409689

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Can a ST215/75R14 Tire and a ST215/75D14 Tires be Used at the Same Time
Using a Bias ST215/75D14, like part # AM1ST90, and Radial ST215/75R14, like part # AM10229, tire at the same time on your trailer should only be done if there were an emergency. Since there is a difference in how those types of tires run, wear, and cool, you could end up having an uneven ride or tire failure. The ideal setup is to have all bias tires or all radial tires. That is the best way to stay safe and know that you will get the most life out of each tire.

Karrier ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10229 is rated for 65 miles per hour. If you want a tire in the same size and load range that has a higher speed rating then I recommend Provider tire # TTWTR21514. It has a speed rating of 81 miles per hour. • At What Age Should Trailer Tires be Replaced
As a general rule of thumb, trailer tires should be replaced every 6 to 8 years regardless of wear. Even though an older tire might appear to have plenty of tread left on it, dry rot and cracking can cause tire failure. I attached a link to a help article that has more trailer tire info as well.

  • Is Tire Weight Capacity Listed per Tire or Per Axle
It would seem that the 1,750 rating that your tire has is the weight rating, but most ST205/75-14 tires with a Load Range of C have a 1,870 lb capacity at 50 psi like part # AM10229. That would mean that when you combine the two tires you have an overall tire rating of 3,500 lbs. I attached a help article on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

  • Replacement 215/75-14 Trailer Tires for a Dual Axle Boat Trailer
Radial trailer tires are going to give you the best ride and they run cooler than bias ply tires so I recommend going with radials. For tire size 215/75-14 you would need radial tire # AM10229. It is rated for 1,870 pounds at 50 psi so 4 of them would have more than enough capacity for a 5,400 pound gross trailer weight. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire. The reason for this is that trailer tires have a thicker side wall than car tires....

  • Can 215/75-14 Tires Be Used To Replace 205/75-14 Tires On Boat Trailer

If you decide to change to a tire that is 215/75-14 like part # AM10229, this tire will fit wheels that are 5-1/2, 6, 6-1/2, and 7 inches wide. • How Do I Find My Correct Tire For My Shasta Starflyte Camper
The fact that you have "ST Tires" means you definitely have a trailer tire. Those tires will be labeled ST before the tire size to designate a special trailer tire. This will mean the tire is designed with stronger sidewalls to handle the extra loads that a trailer/camper will put on the tire. As a result you may have the correct sized tires. Tires blowing out is usually caused by either overloading the tires or because of excessive heat generated when the tires are under inflated. Any egg-shaped holes in the suspension components could be the root cause of the problem. If the axles are torsion axles without suspension then this would not be the case. I also recommend...
