Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Review of Kenda Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - AM10208

Today we're going to take a look at the Kenda Carrier ST 185 80 R13 radial trailer tire in a load range D. Now this is a special trailer tire, has sturdy side walls so it can handle heavy loads and it is created specifically for trailers, it's not intended for use on any other vehicles.Uses double steel belts and full nylon plys to combine for superior function and long tire life. Does use a nice computer generated tread design and premium rubber compound materials that'll give you maximum traction in wet or dry conditions. Does give you a nice smooth ride, excellent stability at highway speeds. And it is an ST tire, for special trailer tire, does meet the Department of Transportation specifications.A few specs on this tire. It is designed to fit the wheel size of 13 inch by four and a half inches wide, 13 inch by five inches wide, and 13 by five and half inches wide.

The tire size, which will be stamped on the side wall right here, is ST for special trailer, 185 80 R13. The R designates that it is a radial design tire. Section width on this tire is going to be 7.2 inches. Overall diameter from the bottom to the top when it's inflated, it's 24.7. This is a load range D, which means it's an eight ply rated tire.

Does have a maximum load capacity of 1710 pounds at 65 PSI and the last thing I do want to mention is most all the new trailer tires are coming through with speed ratings now, and the speed rating will be designated by a letter designation, and that's usually found right where we went through the tire size, right after the size you'll see two numbers for the load index and then the letter M at the end. Speed rating M will mean this tire is tested at 81 miles per hour. But that should do it for the review on the Kenda Carrier ST 185 80 R13 radial trailer tire, in a load range D.

I was happy with the order and delivery time for my two camper trailer tires and I could not have been happier about the price. I have put a few hundred miles on them so far and all seems well. Ashley was helpful with my order and estimated delivery of the tires. I believe that , depending on future performance of these tires that I would purchase tires at etrailer again. 732615

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Tires and Wheels

  • Can a 14 Inch Tire be Used on 13 Inch Rim
If your trailer wheel is 13 inches you will need to use a 13 inch tire; anything larger will not fit. For a 13 inch tire, you have a couple options for size, ST175/80R13, which is 24.1 inches in diameter and 7 inches wide, and ST185/80R13, which is 24.7 inches in diameter and 7.2 inches wide. The different sizes also mean different capacities based on load ranges. I like the Karrier tires, and recommend checking out the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10210,...

Yes, the two tire sizes you mentioned of ST175/80R13 and ST185/80D13 both fit the exact same wheel size so yes, the part # AM10208 would work well as a replacement for your ST175/80R13.

  • 2002 Coleman Utah 13 inch Trailer Tire Replacement Recommendation
The clearances you mentioned having in your fenders is a bit too tight to be safe when using the 14 inch diameter wheel and tires. The best option is going to be a higher capacity 13 inch radial trailer tire like the # AM10208 which is a size ST185/80R13. This has a weight capacity of 1,710 lbs at 65 psi and a higher speed rating of 81 mph which will help on your longer road trips. You do want to make sure you are inflating the tires to the max psi rating of 65 psi so that you ensure you...

  • What PSI Should Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire be Inflated To
The Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # AM10208 should be inflated to its max 65 psi. On trailer tires you want to inflate the tire to the maximum cold psi, which on this tire is 65. Doing this will give you the best performance, allowing the tire to wear slower and more evenly.

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for Size 175/80R13 for Higher Speeds
For a higher speed rated trailer tire in the size you need of ST175/80R13 the best option is the Kenda tire part # AM10208 as this tire is rated for up to 81 mph. • Best Trailer Tire for Rockwood Camper with Tire Size 185/80-13
If your 2016 Rockwood Aframe camper A192HW has a tire size of 185/80-13 then the best tire we have as a replacement would be the Kenda part # AM10208 which is the size you need but it's a radial and the one you referenced is a bias ply. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. The cords inside a bias ply tire run at a 32 degree angle to the direction of travel, and the cords on a radial tire run at a 90 degree angle to the direction...

  • Recommended 13 Inch Tire and Galvanized Wheel With 4 on 4" Bolt Pattern for Boat Trailer
We have a couple of different options for you to increase your tire size and load capacity, although there is not a 14 inch wheel with a 4 on 4" bolt pattern as those size wheels are at least 5 lugs. What you can do is move up to 13 inch wheels and tires, and you have a couple of different options. The one I recommend is the Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel - Galvanized # AM20224 with the Kenda Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10208. The reason this is the best option is because...

  • Recommended ST185/80-13 Tires for Tandem Axle Boat Trailer Carrying 23 Foot Boat
If the tires you installed are of the proper size and load rating, you should be fine. Each tire should have the load rating listed on it. The combined load rating of all 4 tires should equal or exceed the combined weight of the boat and trailer. Also, your trailer tires should be kept fully inflated to the pressure listed on the tire's sidewall. Trailer tires are load tested at full inflation, so at 5 psi less than full inflation, they will have an unknown load rating. For instance,...

  • Can 175/80-13 Tires be Used to Replace 185/80-13 Tires in Emergency
In an emergency situation you can use a ST175/80R13 tire like the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10210 if you have a blowout until you get to a repair shop to get the right size tire, but having different sized tires will lead to suspension problems if you do this permanently. We do have ST185/80-13 tires and wheels such as the Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire w/13" White Modular Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM3S333 and Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized...

Since the Torflex Lift Kit # K71-723-01 will put the frame of your trailer up 2-5/8" higher than what it is now you can go with a bigger tire size. The largest that I recommend going with is the ST185/80R13 for which we have the Kenda Karrier # AM10208. This has a Load Range D (1,710 lbs at 65 psi), a speed rating of 81 mph, an overall outer diameter of 24.7", and a section width of 7.2". • Can Bias Trailer Tires Be Replaced with Radial Trailer Tires
Yes, as long as the actual tire size is the same, a radial ply tire like the Kenda ST185/80R13 # AM10208 will fit onto the wheel just the same as the bias alternative # AM1ST79 it's replacing. Radial trailer tires differ from bias models due to the 90 degree angle the cords run to the direction of travel (compared to a 32 degree angle on bias). This allows radials to flex a bit more for better ground contact and stability. The physical fit onto an existing wheel and trailer suspension...

  • Can 185/80-13 Trailer Tires Replace 175/80-13 Tires on Camper
With trailer tires, the rule of thumb is that you want to have at least 3 inches of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1 inch of clearance from the inside of the tire to the frame rail. So with that in mind you can switch to a larger tire if you still have that much clearance. Your current ST175/80R13 trailer tire, such as the Provider # TTWTRTM1758013C measures 24 inches in diameter when fully inflated and is 7 inches wide. A ST185/80R13 trailer tire, such...
