Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

I am very happy with my new spare tire. I had converted to Radials for better pothole and nail protection. I had the rims and could not find just the tire. It is going on my Whaler trailer. Yes even off season I have begun to spread the word about your prices. WEST MARINE WOULD ONLY SELL ME ONE ON A RIM AND IT WAS $160.00. I HIGHLY recommend your service people for their help. Since you told me about radial tires in a smaller size I may do 3 on my other trailer. Your packing it was great because it was hard to open! That kept the tire in great condition. Please keep in mind that running a tire with a higher load rating will not necessarily increase the load bearing capacity of your trailer. You will still be limited by the capacity of the lowest rated component.

  • How to Measure Wheel Width to Ensure Fit of an ST175/80-13 Trailer Tire
Any given tire size will fit a range of rim widths. An ST175/80-13 tire will fit on 4-1/2, 5, or 5-1/2 inch wheels. To measure the wheel width, you measure from bead seat to bead seat on the wheel. You cannot do this unless the tire is off of the wheel. I have included a couple of tire FAQ links for you to view.

However, it is easy to find the correct tires for your application, you simply want to choose tires that have a combined capacity which exceeds the GVWR of your trailer and fit your wheels. For example, the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10199 is a load range C tire with a capacity of 1,360 lbs (or 2,720 lbs for two) that fits 13" x 4-1/2", 13" x 5", and...

  • How Much Air Should You Put In a ST135/80-13 Trailer Tire
There is not a standard tire pressure rating for all ST135/80-13 tires with a load range C rating. The proper tire pressure rating will actually be the maximum tire pressure rating which is listed on the sidewall of every trailer tire by law. This will allow you to retain the full weight capacity of the tire and is the tire pressure rating you will need to abide by. There are several things to check out before making the decision to go with a heavier rated tire. First, the trailer weight should be checked. If the trailer is loaded over capacity and the wheel and tire combination is rated properly for the trailer suspension then going to a higher rated tire could cause the suspension to fail in another area. Next, the condition of the tires should be inspected. Trailer tires tend to sit for long periods. Weather, sun and sitting in the same spot...
