Karrier S-Trail Radials with Automotive-Grade Tread

Kenda Karrier S-Trail Tread Vs Standard Tread

Unlike standard trailer tire tread, which has solid, continuous ribs, the automotive-grade, computer-generated tread on these Karrier S-Trail radials has ribs with breaks. These breaks allow water to run off to the sides. The Karrier S-Trail tread also has sipes. Siping is a process in which thin grooves (or sipes) are cut into the rubber of the tire. The grooves channel water away from the tread so that the tire makes better contact with the road. Both of these features greatly improve traction during wet, snowy, or icy conditions.

Karrier S-Trail radials are constructed with double steel belts and full nylon plies for increased durability and endurance. The premium rubber compound materials of this tire help disperse heat.

Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Video Transcript for Kenda Tires and Wheels - Tire Only - AM10140 Review

Today we'll be reviewing part number AM10140. This is the Kenda Karrier S-Trail Radial Trailer Tire with a load range of E. This is a special trailer tire design, so it's going to couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. It's created specifically for trailers, so it's not going to be intended for use on other vehicles. It had double steel belts and fully nylon plys that combine for superior function and long life. It does feature a computer generated tread design and premium rubber compound materials, so it's going to offer superior traction in wet or dry conditions. This radial tire does meet Department of Transportation requirements. It's going to be designed to fit 12" by 4" rims.

The tire size is going to measure ST145R12, with a section width of 5.7". So that's outer wall to outer wall. When fully inflated, it's going to give us and outer diameter of 21.3". When it comes to capacity, again, this is going to be load range E with a 10 ply rating. It's going to offer a maximum load of 1,520 pounds at 80 PSI, with a maximum speed rating of 65 miles per hour. It has all the indicators here on the outer wall of the tire, that you could always use as quick reference guide, in case you ever need to gain access to that information. That's going to do it for today's review of part number AM10140.

This is the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire. .

So happy to get these tires for my boat trailer. The radial tires will give better service than the bias tires. They replaced 4.80 X 12 Bias tires. The radials also handle more pounds per tire than the bias. Also, I have at least 8 sets of wheels so I went to the local nationwide department store and their auto department took off the old tires and mounted the new tires for $5.00 each. 616869

Excellent Service.. Fast Shipping... tire looks great on my trailer..being a 10 ply over the old 4 ply makes me feel better taking off down the road.... thanks 149944

I just received the tires today and haven't had them mounted yet so all I can is they look great. Summer before last, we took our pop up camper out West through 18 states in about 60 days. All of our camping up that point had been around Florida where we live, so no long road trips. On our out West trip we had 4 blowouts on our little pop up camper and since we were on the road, we would pick up tire/wheel assemblies from Wal-Mart or Harbor Freight. Did not really know what else to do. Experience has taught us better and that's why I ordered these load range E, 65 mph, 10 ply rating tires. The proof is in the pudding as they say, so in the fall, we will find out how good these tires are and I will write a full review then. 616909

Really nice tires at a good price. Arrived in a few days. They installed great on my pop-up camper that had bias tires. Well worth the extra money to get radial tires. I'm very pleased with the fast service and great quality. Had them put on the rims by my local tire store. I just couldn't break the bead to get the old tires off the rim. 430593

This is the exact same O.E. tire on my camper. They are a great tire. This tire was only purchased to have as a spare. I have purchased tires in the past that were made in China ( not this brand) and had constant blowouts. These are better made ( still made in China) and so far I’ve had good luck with them. Please see my review of the rim I purchased for this tire. 565442

This is the second pair of these ST 145/12 radial I have purchased for my vintage 1959 Lil Loafer trailer. After taking the first pair on a couple of short trips I realized I did not have a radial spare, only my old bias ply tires. Since I don't want to mix radial and bias I figured I should buy another pair for spares, (in spite of the exchange rate on the Canadian dollar and the cost of shipping to Canada). Still loving these tires in comparison to the bias ply, we are planning a longer trip still this year so that will be a good test. Oh, I even reused the packaging to protect my bench top while repacking the bearings. 406791

I needed a quality set of tires for my 1959 Lil Loafer camper trailer, the only tires I could find at any tire shop local to me were bias ply and nothing over a load range D. So needless to say those would wear out real fast and not track very will. These Kenda radials will fill the need perfectly. A load range E 10 ply rating will give me the confidence I need when hitting the road. I had them mounted at a local tire shop and took it out for a test run and they sure help the little trailer track nice. Great tire for a little vintage trailer. Delivery was fast as well, less than a week. The price is fair with the exception of the Canadian exchange on the US dollar. And the website works smooth for orders, I'll be back for other stuff for sure. 385741

The tires are performing very well. We have a longer trip planned this summer so that will give them a good run, but I’m sure they will be great.

Just what I was looking for. We have a commercial Pool business and have trailers with 12 inch tires. The tires that come with the trailers are narrow without much tread depth and wear very fast. The replacement tires I found locally are cheap and come with wheel included do not last very long either. These tires are wider, meaning the tread is as wide as the tire and being radials they should last longer. I was going to change to 13 inch tires but that meant changing fenders or are least moving them and they would have not been wide enough. Got them fast. Very happy with Etrailer. 292131

Got the new tires and had them mounted up. Im glad etrailer had a better small tire for my 5x8 trailer. Ive Had other tire shops tell me 4 or 6ply was the only ply available for the small trailer i had and the farm stores only offered the 4 or 6 ply tire. Etrailer had 10 ply, radial tires for my need that is rated up to 65 mph on the highway and im very happy. Living on a gravel road, and using the small trailer on the farm i would have flat tires all the time with the old weaker 6 ply tires it came with and they wouldnt last very Long if used them on the pavement. 562655

I live in Northern Michigan and went to the local tire store to get tires for my pontoon boat trailer. All they had was load class C in the 12" size. They told me that was the best that was made. Their 1050 lb working load would have been overloaded by my 2400 lb boat. Etrailer had a class E tire that went to over 1500 lbs, just what I needed. Etrailer, you Rock... 260534

Here's the real deal! I purchased two of these tires, mounted on galvanized rims in 2017. They were mounted on a modified boat trailer that hauls our Hobie Cat as well as a wood storage box with various Totes and an Avon Inflatable as well. Crossing a scale the trailer axle weighs a little over 1300lbs. We haul this rig from Canada to Baja Mexico every year, a round trip of about 8,000Kms. Some of the roads are pretty bad. Lots of potholes! When new these tires tread depth measure 7/32. after two round trips to Mexico the depth is 5/32. No flats, no unusual wear and they run quite cool (at 65psi). I just bought two more for the next trip down (July 2019) and I'll keep the older ones for spares.. . . I expect I'll never need them! If you're looking for a heavy duty 12 inch trailer tire this is the best one that I've found. I've tried other brands of 12 inch trailer tires, some only lasted a few thousand kilometers. One thing though. . . Have them installed with high pressure truck valve stems, not the rubber automobile ones, they will handle the pressure and temperature better. Did I mention they were the Real Deal! Thanks etrailer! 679983

I just purchased two tires with a load rating of E for use on my EZE tow trailer. E load range tires are not easy to find, and these tires were shipped quickly (received in three days). I wanted to replace the existing tires, since I brought my trailer second hand and did not know the history of the tires that came on the trailer. I needed replacements quickly for a planned RV trip. I place my order over the phone and was treated professionally with a promise that the tires would arrive quickly. 674415

I installed the tires myself which was a challenge as they are very stout tires but it was feasible. Once installed I've been very happy with them. They seem to ride a bit smoother than the bias ply tires they replaced but it could just be my imagination. I really like that they are rated for a heavy load as I typically overload my trailer with the hopes of avoiding multiple trips it gives me more piece of mind knowing they are up to the task. 647605

Do you have a question about this Tires and Wheel?

  • How to Get the Most Out of Your Trailer Tires
  • We have just what you are looking for. Although we do have load range D tires in the 5.30-12 size they are bias as opposed to radial in style. Bias tires are meant more for off-road purposes like agriculture whereas the radial tires have a sidewall with more flex that can better dissipate the heat build-up than bias can. I recommend going with the Taskmaster 5.30R12 Radial Trailer Tire # TT53012C. It has a load range of C (Maximum load: 1,050 lbs at 80 psi), a max speed rating of 81...

These tires can also be found as a combination with wheels, such as the # AM31202 with 12" galvanized spoke wheels and a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, as well as the # AM35351DX, which is a 12" white spoke wheel with a 4 on 4 bolt pattern. • Can Trailer With ST145/R12 Tires be Upgraded to 13 Inch Tires
  • We have ST145/R12 trailer tires with a load range E, the Kenda Karrier S-Trail # AM10140. If you wanted to go to a larger tire and wheel you could do so but you would need to ensure you have the needed clearance of about three inches from your trailer tire to rim and four inches to your trailer frame. A ST145/R12 tire like the Kenda Karrier S-Trail # AM10140 measures 21.3 inches in diameter when inflated and is 5.7 wide. The smallest 13 inch tire is ST175/80R13 quite a bit bigger, measuring...

It's the only Load Range E tire we have at that size and we don't have any for a 13 inch rim. Another option that may work for you is tire # TT53012C. It's a 5.30R12 size which is about a 1/2 inch skinnier and a 1/*4 inch larger in diameter. It does have an 81 mph speed rating however it's only rated for 1,050 pounds as a...

  • Bias vs Radial Tires for 2002 Viking 2470ST Pop-Up Camper
  • Since radial tires flex more than bias tires, they generally have better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. They also run cooler than bias tires do, especially when under a load, so radials tend to last longer. While bias ply tires can be useful for off-road applications like farm use, radials are generally preferable on the highway and for long trips. Given your usage, I'd suggest upgrading to a radial tire. I've attached a helpful article on trailer tires for your convenience....

Online specs for the M-1910 indicate a dry weight of 1719-lbs so your estimated GVWR of 2323-lb sounds about right. Still, I suggest checking the trailer's main identification plate (which has its VIN) to find the GVWR, which is the most it can safely weigh when fully loaded. They have a width of 5.7 inches and overall diameter of 21.3, which isn't a very noticeable difference. These tires have automotive grade tread and are rated for 1520 lbs at 80 psi.

  • Radial Trailer Tire to Replace Bias Ply 4.80-12 Trailer Tires
  • The closest radial tire size we offer to your 4.80-12 bias ply trailer tire would be the Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10140. This tire will be about an inch taller and wider than what you currently have. You will need to make sure your trailer has enough clearance for this. I attached a couple FAQ articles on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

  • Availability of Trailer Tire in Size 155R12
  • We do not offer a 155R12 size tire but we do have trailer tires in 145mm width that fit a 12-inch wheel. Kenda # AM10130 is a Load Range D radial trailer tire that offers a load capacity of 1,220-lbs at 65 psi. For a higher-capacity tire Kenda offers a Load range E tire, part # AM10140, that is also a radial but that is rated for 1,520 lbs at 80 psi. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi pressure that is noted on the tire sidewall. It is never appropriate to under-...

  • Can 4.80-12 Tire be Replaced with ST145/R12 Tire Using the Same Wheel
  • Yes, the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10140 referenced in your question will fit the same 12 inch wheel with a 4 inch width that your existing 4.80-12 size tires are mounted to. Just note that the ST145/R12 tire will be about 0.8 inches larger in diameter, so you will want to make sure you have the necessary clearance on your trailer for the slightly larger tire size. This Kenda radial ply tire is going to provide an excellent upgrade over your existing set....

  • What is the Speed Rating for Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire
  • The trailer tires we carry are rated for 65 miles per hour at most. Traveling 80 miles an hour will produce too much heat for a trailer tire. The problem is that trailer tires are made with a thicker side wall than passenger vehicle tires. This means that they can get hotter faster and going over the rated speed will lead to excessive heat build up. Excessive heat build-up in a tire can lead to diminished tread life and tire failure. Radial tires dissipate heat better but are still rated...

  • Wheel and Tire Recommendation, ST145R12 Size with a 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern
  • The only wheel and tire combinations we offer for the ST145R12 size and 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern you listed are on aluminum wheels and are not load range E. Check out the Kenda KR25 ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire and Wheel # AM31208 and the Kenda KR25 Radial Trailer Tire and Wheel # AM31208HWTB. The Kenda Tire # AM10140 that you referenced is a load rang E, but we do not have a 4 on 4 inch wheel with the same capacity as most 4 on 4 inch hubs have capacities near 2,000 lbs. While these...

  • Will Kenda ST145/R12 Fit on Same Rim as 4.80-12 Tire
  • Both tire sizes you mentioned are designed to fit a 12 inch diameter wheel that is 4 inches wide so yes, the part # AM10140 that you referenced would work well for you.

  • Does the Aluminum Wheel Part # AM22319HWT Come Pre-Mounted with Kenda ST145/80-12 Tire
  • We do not have any tire/wheel combos with a tire pre-mounted on the Aluminum HWT Series Wheel part # AM22319HWT. Instead you will need to purchase the wheel and tire separately and take them to your local tire shop to have them mounted and balanced. The correct tire you will want to use is the Kenda Karrier S-Trail part # AM10130 for load range D or part # AM10140 for load range E. You will also need a valve stem and for that I recommend part # AM20907. The correct center cap for the above...

  • Will 145/80-12 Trailer Tires Fit the Same Wheels as 5.30-12 Trailer Tires
  • Trailer tires in sizes 5.30-12 and 145/60-12 (such as # AM10140) both fit the same size wheels so you could use them. Trailer tire # AM10140 is rated for 1,520 pounds at 80 psi. Please note that higher capacity trailer tires will not increase the capacity of the trailer. Both sizes are basically the same height and width with the 145 being slightly shorter. There should not be any clearance issues so there is no reason not to switch to the 145 size. I have included a couple of helpful...

  • Can I Get Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Load Range E Trailer Tires On White 4 Hole wheels?
  • We have the Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Tire w/ 12" White Spoke Wheel - 4 on 4 - LR D, # AM35351DX. This is a great tire and wheel combination that has everything you were looking for with the exception of the load range of E. Load range D has 8 ply rating instead of 10 ply rating. If you want the combination of the two you mentioned, I can get you the wheels and the tires you ask for, but they will come separate. We don't have the ability to put them together for you,...

  • ST145/80-12 Tire Recommendation Over a 4.80-12
  • The two tire sizes are similar, but the 145/80-12 will be a bit taller at 21.3 inches vs. the 4.80-12 which has a diameter of 20.5 inches. Aside from that they are very similar and both fit 12 inch diameter rims that are 4 inches wide. The radial part # AM10140 that is a ST145/80R12 would be what I recommend as it would have plenty of capacity and is a radial which is preferred over bias-ply construction like what all of the 4.80-12 tires are made of. A radial tire flexes more than...

  • What Size Tire Will Fit My Trailer
  • I searched our entire inventory at etrailer.com and that tire size isn't a size we've seen used on trailers. Our closest size is 145/80-12. The Kenda Karrier S-Trail ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10140 would be the best example of this size. If you will like to measure to see if the 145/80-12 tires will fit your trailer, please do the following: Measure to see if you have 3 or 4 inches between the tread and the other under side of the fender and 2 inches in between the side wall,...

  • Can 145/12 Trailer Tires be Used in Place of 5.30-12 Trailer Tires
  • The difference in section width between a 5.30-12 and a 145/12 is just 0.1 inches. Only half of that is applied towards the trailer. On wheel and tire combo # AM35354 the wheel is a black mod wheel with a zero offset meaning that the mounting surface of the wheel is in the dead center equal distance from either sidewall. Both tire sizes fit the same wheel size so if you just wanted to go to radial tires then you could use # AM10130 for a load range D rated for 1,220 pounds at 65 psi....

  • Do 4.80 x 12 Size Tires Fit the Same Rim as 145/80-12 Size Tires
  • Your current 4.80 x 12 tires and the Kenda 145/R12 tires, part # AM10140, both fit on a 4 inch rim so you can use your same rims. However, you want to makes sure you have clearance for the larger tires since they're over half an inch taller and more than 3/4 of an inch wider. You want 3 to 4 inches from the tire tread to the fenders and at least 1 inch between the sidewall and the closest part of the trailer.
