Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for HWT Tires and Wheels - Wheel Only - AM22651 Review

Today we're going to review part number AM22651. This is the HWT aluminum 15 by 6 inch Hi-Spec series 6 trailer wheel with the 5 on 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. Now this wheel is a durable, corrosion resistant aluminum construction. It is the Hi-Spec series 6 design which is very unique and appealing. The series 6 will have the seven spokes and then the cover plate that covers the lugs. The front and the back of the wheel are clear coated to protect it.

This is a high quality wheel that meets the Department of Transportation specifications and it does include the center cap that goes over the lugs. Just to show you, it is held in place by . There's a large Phillips head screw right there that holds the cap securely in place. To remove it all you have to do . I'll just remove it for you and show you how it works. Just removing this screw will allow you to remove the center cap and have access to your lugs.

It's just a nice feature. Besides making the wheel look nice it also protects your lugs from somebody just trying to get to them. Okay, once we get the screw completely out here, the cap will remove and then you'll have access to your lugs. Now the cap. What's nice about it, it does have a little tab on this end directly across from where the lug hole is. The reason that is is there's a little insert there that you just put the tab in there and then lower it down.

Then when you put your screw in, it will hold the cap completely into place. A few specs on this. The wheel is a 15 inch diameter and a 6 inches in width. When you go to measure that .. I'm going to show you here how to measure it.

The rim dimensions are measured by where the tire bead will seat on the wheel. Basically when you mount a tire on here the beads of the tire seat right in here. When you're going to measure the rim dimensions, the width will measure bead seat to bead seat or inside-to-inside. Same way on the diameter. You don't measure edge-to-edge, you're measuring where the beads seat, so inside-to-inside. If I take a ruler and put it on the inside to the inside you'll be able to see that it is a 15-inch diameter. Again if you do it on the width, inside-to-inside, you can see it's 6 inches, so 15 by 6. Now the bolt pattern on this is a 5 on 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. On bolt patterns if you need to measure bolt pattern on a wheel that has an odd number of lugs . In this case it has 5 . What you want to do is pick any hole you prefer and from that hole you're going to measure directly across to either one of the holes directly across from it. It doesn't matter which one. When you do measure it, you're going to measure from the center of the starting hole to the outer edge of the hole that you measure to. I'm going to try to give you an idea here if we measure from here to here. If you put a tape measure on it, go from the center of the starting hole to the outer edge. It's harder to do with the alloy wheel because it's got a deep dish to it. But anyway, you'll see that it's 4-1/2. That's 5 on 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. Now this wheel does use a 1/2 inch by 20 wheel lug size. The pilot hole diameter, which is the large hole here in the center of the wheel, this goes over the hub on your trailer. On this wheel the pilot diameter is going to be right at 3.19 inches and the weight capacity on this wheel is going to be 2150 pounds. Then again I'm just going to put the cap back on. We'll find that tab, put it into place. Take the screw, line it up, get it started and then just go ahead and tighten it down. Again, it's a large Phillips screw head, it's not a lock. If somebody wants to they can unscrew it but the idea is it takes a while to unscrew it and usually if somebody is trying to get your items, they're not going to want to take a long time to bother with unscrewing this screw. There we go. You just snug it up. You don't want to over-tighten it. Then you can see that the cap is secure into place. That should do it for the review on part number AM22651, the HWT aluminum 15 by 6 Hi-Spec series 6 trailer wheel with the 5 on 4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. .

  • Upgrading to 15 Inch Wheels/Tires on a 2006 Tracker Tahoe 215 Boat Trailer
