Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Review of Dexstar Tires and Wheels - Wheel Only - AM22704

Today I'm going to take a look at the Dexstar 17-1/2" by 6-3/4" Hub-Piloted Steel Wheel with the 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern and a negative 0.5" Offset. This is a sturdy solid center steel construction. Has a nice, excellent corrosion resistance. Does use a gray powder-coat finish over any coat primer, all over the whole wheel. It is a hub-piloted design. When this goes on the vehicle, it will center right on this hub center here. Now it does .. Because it is a hub-piloted design, the holes are non-chamfered.

There is no bevel to them, so it does require the use of flange nuts, the size 5/8 by 18 size flange nuts. We do sell those flange nuts separately on our website. They're part number 95188, and they're listed on this product page as a related product. This is a high-quality wheel. It does meet the DOT, Department of Transportation, specifications. It is made in the U.S.A.A few specs on this we're going to measure.

The diameter again is 17-1/2", and that will always be measured inside to inside. So, if we take our tape measure, and you can see if we go inside to inside, it's going to measure 17-1/2" in diameter. The width of the wheel is going to be bead seed to bead seed, the tire bead seed, so it's inside to inside. Again, this is going to be 6-3/4" wide. Now, the bolt pattern on this wheel is an 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern. If you want to measure that on a wheel that's an even number of lugs, in this case, eight, it's pretty easy.

You just pick any hole, measure from the center of that hole directly across to the center of the hole right across from it. On this wheel, it'll measure 6-1/2", so 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern. The wheel lug size, we mentioned it uses a 5/8" by 18 flange nut. Pilot hole diameter, which is the diameter of this large hole here on the center of the wheel, is 4.75". Weight capacity on this wheel is 6,000 pounds. And the last thing I do want to mention is this wheel does have a slight offset.

It's a negative 0.5" offset. The reason they do that, that ensures that the wheel is positioned further from the trailer frame, just so it has the correct clearance. And an offset, when I mention that, is always measured from the center line of the wheel. In other words, it's the mounting surface. When this mounting surface lines up directly with the center line of the wheel, that's a zero starting point, so if this mounting surface goes this way, which is negative, in other words, towards the trailer, which will bring the wheel and tire out from the trailer, that's a negative offset. This wheel does have a negative 0.5" offset. But that should do it for the review on the Dexstar 17-1/2" by 6-3/4" Hub-Piloted Steel Wheel with the 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern and a negative 0.5" Offset.

  • Comparing Positive and Negative Offset Wheels
  • Most trailer wheels have a zero offset, meaning that the place where the wheel touches the hub face is exactly centered between the front and the back edge of the wheel. This allows the weight to be perfectly centered on the wheel for the most load bearing. The Dexstar Hub-Piloted Steel Wheel w -0.5" Offset - 17-1/2" x 6-3/4" - 8 on 6-1/2 - Gray # AM22704 with a negative offset will have the center of the wheel 1/2 inch further from the trailer frame.
