Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexstar Tires and Wheels - Wheel Only - AM20741 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexstar steel spoke trailer wheel, number AM20741. This trailer wheel features a sturdy steel construction, it provides excellent corrosion resistance with the white powder coat finish over an E-coat primer. It has an eight spoke design. The high quality of this trailer wheel meets department of transportation specifications and it is made in the U.S. Taking a look at some of the dimensions, the rim dimension is 16 inches. When you measure the rim, you do not measure from outer edge to outer edge, you measure from bead seating to bead seating right here.

The width is six inches, and that is the same for the width, from bead seating to bead seating. The wheel bolt size is half an inch by 20. The bolt pattern six lug nut holes, and whenever you have an even number, you can just measure from the center of one lug hole to the center of the one directly across from it. That is five and a half inches. The pilot hole is 4.27 inches.

This trailer wheel has a capacity of 3,050 pounds at 90 psi, and it does come with a limited 2-year warranty. That's going to do it for our Dexstar steel spoke trailer wheel, number AM20741.

After careful consideration I purchased 5 16x6 Dexstar wheels for my enclosed car trailer. While installing the tires you could clearly SEE on the spin balancer that 2 of the rims "not tires" were out of round and required additional weight 3.75/2.25 to bring them into balance which is more than normal. I am uncertain of the factory tolerance however I would not recommend these wheels to a friend. If I had more time I would return. This was the reason I wanted to by wheels made in the USA and not ones made across the pond. 389418

  • Replacement Trailer Wheels to Fit 215/85-16 Size Tires
First of all your tire size, 215/85-16 sounds like it's a passenger vehicle tire and not a trailer tire. Trailer tire sizes begin with "ST" for special trailer. I recommend using ST tires because they have a stiffer sidewall to handle the vertical load of a trailer. If your tires are trailer tires then you're good to go. But if they aren't I would get some trailer tires. The exception is that some LT tires can be used on trailers. Your 7.50-16's that you had were likely LT tires like...

All available 16-inch trailer wheels with the 6-on-5-1/2 bolt pattern, such as Dexstar # AM20741 that you referenced, can be seen on the link provided. Most of these wheels are rated for 3050-lbs at 90-psi pressure. Part # AM22657 from Americana is rated for 3200-lbs at 80-psi; parts # AM22658HWTB and # AM22658HWT are rated for 3580-lbs at 80-psi, which is the highest rating we offer. The valve stem used can also affect overall pressure. If your trailer itself is rated for 36000-lbs...

  • Availability of Load Range E Tires for a 15 Inch Galvanized Boat Trailer Wheel with ST225/75R15 D

The ST225/75R15 trailer tires we carry, item # AM10256, have a capacity of 2,540 lbs at 65 psi, and should be sufficient for the axle and components on your trailer. Going to a higher capacity tire could possibly make other components on the the weakest link and subject to fail. We offer a 15 inch diameter by 6 inch wide white spoked wheel in a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, part # AM20522, but none of our vendors offer a 16 inch wheel with that bolt pattern. Generally, 16 inch wheels are used on larger trailers that have heavier axles that use a different bolt pattern like 6 on 5-1/2 or 8 on 6-1/2.

If this is for a trailer, the 265/75-16 tire size is usually not available in a trailer tire. At this time we do not carry 16 inch wheels with a 5 bolt pattern or a lower profile tire. • At What Age Should Trailer Tires Get Replaced
Trailer tires should be replaced about every 6 or 7 years, even if the tread is still in good shape. As tires age, they can crack and dry rot. Continuing to use the existing tires would be dangerous. If you'd care to reply with the current size of the tires you have, I'd be happy to make a recommendation.

Thank you for the photo of your Rockwood Signature 5th wheel. You can change your 5th wheel's ST225/75R/15 Load Range C radial tires to a higher Load Range (D or E) if you like but this will not necessarily increase the trailer's gross weight rating unless the tires are the lowest-rated component. A higher Load Range E tire is going to have a larger load capacity, which will technically allow the tire to run a bit cooler under load during travel. A radial tire will also do a better job of running cooler than a bias ply alternative. Since excessive heat is the primary cause of trailer tire failure going up a bit in capacity isn't a bad idea at all. • What is Negative and Positive Wheel Offset
Yes, a negative offset moves the tire further away from the axle/trailer, while a positive offset will move the tire closer to the trailer. Most of the trailer wheels we carry have a zero offset, which means that the the mounting surface is on the same plane as the center line of the wheel. This is done to equalize the weight of the trailer load. The offset of our wheels is listed under "Specs." For instance, the offset for the Dexstar Steel Spoke Trailer Wheel # AM20741 is listed as...
