Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexstar Tires and Wheels - Wheel Only - AM20501 Review

Today were going to review part number AM20501. This is the Dexstar 15 x 6 vintage steel trailer wheel with the positive 1/2 offset. It also has the 4 on 9.44" bolt pattern and the silver sparkle in color. This wheel is a vintage wheel. Its also known as a 494 wheel, which is basically the bolt pattern. Also, its known as a star design wheel. This opening has sort of a star design to it.

Its made of a sturdy steel construction. The silver sparkle powder coat finish over the e-coat primer provides an excellent corrosion resistance, and it is a nice finish. The silver actually has some sparkle in it so it gives a nice finish to it. The star pattern, which is this opening right here, that creates that vintage look. It has a positive offset which ensures that this wheel is positioned closer to the trailer frame.

It is a high-quality wheel that meets the Department of Transportation specification. A few dimensions on this It is a 15" diameter in a 6" wide wheel. If you go to measure those dimensions, basically what youre measuring is when the tire seats on this wheel the beads of the tire will seat right here. Youre going to measure bead seat to bead seat, which is inside to inside, so diameter on this is going to be 15. The width will be the same way. Youll measure bead seat to bead seat, so the width would be right at 6, so 15 diameter, 6 wide wheel. The bolt pattern is 4-hole, 9.44.

That measurement, basically, is if you put a ruler on it, if you pick any hole, measure from the center of that hole directly across to the hole right across from it, center to center. Were going to do center to center on this one and youll see it gives you the 9.44 measurement, so 4 lugs, 9.44 bolt pattern. It does use a wheel bolt size, or a wheel lug size of 1/2 x 20. It has a weight capacity on this wheel of 2,330 pounds. The last thing I just want to mention is this wheel does have a 1/2 positive offset. Basically what that is telling you is this mounting surface right here, instead of being right at the center of the wheel which most trailers nowadays use a 0 offset, that would be with the mounting surface right at the center, this one actually moves this mounting surface 1/2 positive, and positive would mean it goes to the outside of the wheel.

With that mounting surface measured 1/2 towards the outside of the wheel, its going to move your wheel and tire closer to the trailer frame. On a lot of the older trailers, they do need some extra clearance underneath there so thats why a lot of them will have that extra offset in them. That should do it for the review on part number AM20501, the Dexstar 15 x 6 vintage steel trailer wheel with the positive 1/2 offset, in the 4 on 9.44" bolt pattern. .

I have an early 1970's Prowler travel trailer with wheels that have a large open circle pattern vs the X type pattern of this wheel. This wheel fits perfectly albeit a different look than the others. Can't complain since it is almost impossible to find these wheels. Excellent service and quick delivery...very satisfied. 312890

Ask the Experts about this Dexstar Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Solution for Older Haynes Horse Trailer that Would Need New Wheels/Hubs in Future
We do offer replacement vintage style wheels like what you sent in a picture of with wheels like the part # AM20501 and we used to have hubs that fit this wheel but due to the age and demand we no longer carry them as they've been non-standard for quite some time. Axle replacement isn't that difficult or expensive so if the trailer is really a great fit for what you need I wouldn't let that be a determining factor. That said if you were in a position to need new hubs that is the route you'd...

  • What Bolts are Needed to Mount Dexstar Vintage Trailer Wheel # AM20501
The Dexstar Vintage Wheel you mentioned, part # AM20501 is typically lug-centric, which means that it would mount to a hub that has wheel studs and would use lug nuts, not lug bolts. The wheel usually goes on a hub like part # 8-174-5UC3, which also uses clamps to join the hub to the rim. If for some reason your existing hubs use lug bolts, you'd need to determine the length and diameter of the bolt needed as well as the thread pitch of the bolt. Since in my experience, these hubs usually...

We also offer this bolt pattern in other wheel sizes; those part numbers are linked for you: # AM20208, # AM20312 and # AM20395. For this vintage style wheel we no longer have replacement hub/drum assemblies. At right is a link to all hub/drum assembly sizes we do offer.

  • How to Determine if the Dexstar Vintage Steel Wheel with 4 on 9.44 Bolt Pattern Will Fit a Trailer
It seems unlikely that a trailer made in 1984 would have the vintage steel wheels like # AM20501 on it. This is not a very common wheel. But it is still possible so to determine if it is a fit you will need to measure the bolt pattern of the wheels on your trailer. This wheel has a 4 on 9.44 bolt pattern. That means from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the one across from it measures 9.44 inches. This wheel also has a 5 millimeter positive offset meaning the mounting surface...

It is also 15 inches in diameter so it may not be the correct wheel for your 1984 Prowler.
